El Paseo Reviews List

El Paseo

El Paseo is a local Chophouse. We are open daily from 5pm - 10pm.

In 2009 local Mill Valley residents Tyler Florence and Sammy Hagar partnered to take over the restaurant. Seeking to maintain the historic charm and integrity of the building and gardens, they planned and designed a complete restoration of the storied interior and exterior spaces. They are very excited to bring a local institution back to its former glory.

"Charming Mill Valley setting with good food, professional service, great wine list. Sometimes it can get very noisy but this last visit we sat in the front room which was fairly quiet and six of us could speak to each other easily. Food was presented beautifully. The Shrimp Louie was actually the most creative thing we had - looked pretty and was excellent. The kitchen split the share plates before they served them, which is always a sign of a well run kitchen and was certainly appreciated."

"Serce was fantastic but if you are going to call yourself a chop house well then you should no the difference from medium rare and medium well and over salting the meat doesn't help the taste as well. The server was very apologetic and offered a new steak, I appreciated her gesture but declined. As I told her I am here to have dinner with my wife not to watch her eat while waiting for my steak. Obviously the steak was compted and we were offered a free dessert."

"We went for our 39th anniversary, and when I made the reservation, I noted that. No,recognition was given. My wife ordered the fillet, it was very salty, and dry. We had the chocolate cake with huckleberry sauce, and the butterscotch pudding for dessert, OK, but not great . My shortrib was delicious, and our devil eggs and onion soup were very good. Overall, not as good as I expected."

"Had a great experience here with Fiance and Mom for Mother's Day. Just the three of us, we all loved our dinners - I had the Veal Chop, Highly Reccommend with the exotic mushroom medley which was also great. I selected the Knez Anderson Valley Pinot 2010 which was outstanding as usual. Service was well timed and attenteive with a little bit of old school charm. I've heard mixed reviews from friends so my expectations were low but we had a great meal, the ambiance is exactly what one hopes for in an old school but chic steak house and although pricey, it was a beautiful evening and we'll definitely go back. For Marin, this has been one of the best dining experiences I've had
Highly Recommend"

"Out of town guests gave us the excuse; had a fabulous evening. It can be difficult to get a weekend reservation, but our group increasing from 5 to 7 was accomodated & we had lovely wine cellar room. Service:polished and friendly, really made the evening. Started w/scrumptious deviled eggs, then bar steak with frites, filet mignon (roasted shallots), english veal chop - done perfectly and well seasoned. Pea risotto was excellent. We also shared the smashed potatoes, mac and cheese and roasted asparagus - again all well executed, and had a delicious Cote du Rhone. Shared desserts - and interesting flavor combos. Servings not large & prices high, so just be prepared. Overall, straightforward food, nicely prepared & served, in lovely setting."

"The food and service was good, lighting was a little dark. We all had steak which I understand has to rest after cooking but it was delivered to the table with a seasoned butter that would not melt, meat was lukewarm bordering on cool. Whipped potatoes and spinach were very good. Major fail in not accepting our American Express gift card although the restaurant does accept American Express credit cards. The manager that evening demonstrated little interest in finding a solution for us to be able to use our gift card as payment."

"Usually this place is a home run, but I think we were seated at the same time as a few larger groups and got lost in the shuffle. Our server came over immediately to show us the cuts of meat on the menu that night, but we then waited over 10 minutes for him to come back and take our drink order. We also had to ask for the popovers that are typically brought to the table when they bring you water.
The crispy duck wings were tender, but really salty. The bacon wrapped filet and the burger were are always, delicious and perfectly cooked."

"Classic Tyler Florence. Best dishes: deviled eggs, Caesar salad, fried chicken- burgers to die for. Desserts are strange/need work.
Great atmosphere in an old Tavern. I would give it a very good except for the weird dessert. So long as they comb that out it could be a "great" restaurant".

"I had the Heritage Cut English Pork Chop which was perfectly cooked, tender, juicy, and large. The pastry served as bread was Yorkshire Pudding which was very good. I could have eaten more than one, but I didn't want to ask. The smashed potatoes I ordered on the side were very tasty, but $8 dollars for potatoes or any side dish is a bit much. The dessert, Butterscotch Pudding was very good. But, the oral description of the other desserts starting with the word "deconstructed" left me flat. Deconstructed is another word for experimental, good or bad. We had a great experience. My wife had mystery "bar steak" with a mountain of fries. She felt it wasn't worth the price. Devils on Horseback starter was delicious."

"Because of the not-inexpensive prices, we had not been back to El Paseo for a year, but returned to celebrate my wife's birthday. Even though we had made reservations, we were shunted to a bar area next to a highly boisterous crowd seated at a table normally relegated to four. At times, we had difficulty hearing each other. The usually reliable filet ($28) had this time been steeped or marinated in something unfamiliar and slightly off-putting. The price of our favorite wine had been jacked up 13% since our last visit. The once-great Caesar Salad ($10) we had always split because of its massive size had been downsized to only a third of its former self. But its price hadn't changed. (And the kitchen even forgot the anchovies!) Wow!"

"OK, I generally do not like trashing a place. But I feel it's in order here. Not that te food wasn't good, it was. Service was OK. Ambiance was def lacking. Again on the surface this doesn't add up o One Star. But!!! Much of the staff is quite pretentious. Especially the hostess. My dates steak came out Cold. Yes Cold. Like it had been sitting around for a fair amount of time. When informed the waiter did take it back. He was the one bright spot here.
Being that this establishment is owned by Two "Celebrities" one being a Chef. You'd think there would be more attention payed to the details. But they seem to be dialing it in. There are so many great options in the Bay Area. Why waste your time or money here."

"Pretentious waiter. Stuck us at the worst table in the restaurant (in the bar) even though we had reserved a month in advance. When we complained, we were told they couldn't do anything about it (even though there were plenty of empty tables in the main dining room). Waiter was rude and rushed us like we were at a fast food place. Food was mediocre at best. I will never recommend this place to anyone. What a waste of money and a huge disappointment. "Tyler needs to get back in the kitchen and do some quality control.
It was an anniversary and 60 th birthday and we didn't get anything comped except the candles.
We ordered a 2ndbottle of wine with our meal and it never arrived.
The salad had 1 piece of un ripe avocado and 1 slice of small grapefruit and way too much green goddess dressing.
The veal chop was excellent.
I would recommend for main and dessert .
Love the location but was disappointed overall. I wanted to love it for the price.

"This was our 2nd time to El Paseo and it was just as delicious or even better than the first time. The service and attention to detail is outstanding. Not to mention the food is beyond amazing. Always tasty and generous portions. This restaurant is a must go!"

"From the moment you walk in, you know you are in for a special and unique experience. The cobblestone walkway and outdoor seating areas twinkling with lights set a romantic and warm mood. Inside, a beautiful dining room and relaxed but sophisticated atmosphere are part of the exceptional experience that is El Paseo. Superior service from start to finish and a great wine list but the star is the food which was perfectly prepared and presented. We had tuna tartare to start then ordered short ribs and a bacon-wrapped filet (perfectly cooked) and shared a side of creamed spinach. All delicious! We were never kept waiting for another glass of wine or refilled water glass."

"Arrived on time, but among opening reservations, our table was not quite ready. The bar service for the champagne we brought was very good, as was the table staff. The starter pan oysters were flavorful, but a shade on the over-cooked side. The roasted bone marrow was among the best I’ve had, beautifully plated. We split a Maine lobster salad; it too was gorgeous and paired very well with the champagne. The lobster itself had more chew than anticipated, but the mâche & that included a few (saffron hinted?) shallot rings made a tasty plate, overall."

"Overall, the food was amazing. Our steaks were perfectly cooked, and the crispy duck wings were great, if a little messy. The service was not great, however. Our waitress seemed distracted and a little judgmental of our food choices. We each ordered the 8 ounce filet mignon -- the smallest steak on the menu -- and neither of us could finish it. So, I didn't appreciate feeling bullied into ordering a larger steak. Also, she tried to tell us that the side orders were single servings and warned us when we decided to split two. Warning: the sides are huge! Which is great, obviously. I'm just glad I went with my gut and didn't fall for her sales tactic. We ordered the smashed potatoes and the creamed spinach -- both of which were super tasty."

"We were there on Easter evening so it was slow. That may be the reason everything was so nice. Either way we really enjoyed being in a nearly empty room where we could hear each other talk. Great property with @5 different rooms where you could be seated. Food was a bit overpriced but it was very good."

"We loved El Paseo. We were inspired to try their steaks after seeing Tyler Florence teach Ina Garten, aka the Barefoot Contessa, his method of steak preparation on her TV show. We were not disappointed! My son and one of his friends had the filet mignon, another friend had the steak frites, and my husband and I shared the 32 oz. Creek Stone Cowboy Ribeye. We were all very satisfied with our steaks! Another person could have shared our ribeye!
We had deviled eggs as an appetizer and their Caesar and green salads. All were excellent!! Our server was warm, engaging and professional. I guess we'll have to visit our SF-based son more often to enjoy El Paseo's phenomenal steaks. Summer outdoor seating should be phenomenal!

"El Paseo is a gem. Atmosphere is always beautiful no matter which hidden area you are placed in. Once the weather gets warmer, will definitely ask to dine outdoors at the table designed only for romance. Excellent food & wonderful, accomodating staff. The lobster salad is a consistent winner!!"

"From the 3 glasses of lukewarm champagne to the tough fatty ribs This was a major disappointment. I booked a table through your website for 8pm, only to be informed it wasn't ready until 8.40. We were then seated in the bar directly in front of the waiter service area. As an overseas visitor I expected a lot more not only from the so called restaurant but also from this website. Third class service all the way.
The waiter was disinterested in us, and the overall attitude was snooty. Surely when wine is ordered the sommalier should know who at the table ordered it and present the wine to them? Sorry, but this place is just like the owners singing, way over rated.."

"Wish we loved it but didn't: The good: fantastic ambiance, the hostess was extremely helpful in finding us a table at our desired time, the noise level was comfortable and the deviled eggs and the filet mignon were delicious! The not so good: The wait staff seemed on edge and very chilly/business-like all evening, (perhaps this was because Tyler Florence who co-owns the restaurant was present), the manager who came to our table to help remedy an entree gripe was robotic and cold in his approach. Lobster salad with two tiny pieces of lobster (we were told it was 1/2 lobster) was insanely ridiculous for $36. And their caesar salad had the smallest 6 little lettuce leaves....felt overpriced and under valued. Won't go again unfortunately."

"That beautiful little alley, if I may call it that, deserves a much more innovative and creative menu from any restaurants that do or will exist in that European setting. Meat and just meat without much creativity, ruins the whole thing. The food was good, but not exciting. The service was very nice and the lady who served us was very courteous and attentive; however, something just wasn't right. Everything was a bit confused and unusual. I've been adoring that little passage for the last 35 years(Ever since I explored it) This is the 2nd restaurant owned by the chef in Mill Valley that I have tried, and I just expected more overally! I think that entire environment needs a more European menu."

"Excellent food. We went early because we have a 15month old. They were very accomadating to our needs. The service was great! Though we didn't order dessert because our daughter was getting too wild, but it look good from across the table. We even saw the mayor and a rock star there all in one night. How awesome is that!"

"A truly amazing experience. Each course was thoughtful, savory and a pleasure. I thoroughly enjoyed the green pea risotto, which was delicate yet rich with flavors. My fiancé ordered the filet w a side of mushrooms that was like smoked butter gift-wrapped in bacon, it was so flavorful and tender. The finale was deconstructed bourbon pecan pie, with bourbon ice cream. The sweet salty mix was perfect and finished the meal in a richly satisfying way. Service was warm and friendly though spotty at times. Overall, an outstanding experience. We will be back."

"I had an app, salad, entree, and dessert. The app was their roasted bone marrow. It's a deceptive title, considering that it's less bone marrow and more a short rib and horseradish topping. I couldn't taste the horseradish and the short rib was just whatever. I was expecting bone marrow, since the title said it was roasted bone marrow which is, frankly, a pretty standard item. The butter salad was excellent. The best thing all night. The expensive wagyu/angus cross strip steak was cooked well, but didn't blow me away. Tender, yes, but lacking in any flavor depth.
Frankly, I should have known better than to go to a restaurant owned by Tyler Florence and Sammy Hagar and get anything but overpriced food that under-delivers."
