Philippe Chow of New York's famed Mr. Chow on 57th Street is proud to announce the opening of Philippe's on Madison Avenue & 60th Street. Formerly the renowned chef of Mr. Chow, Philippe has at last decided after 27 years to start anew. Philippe will bring his culinary expertise & worldly experience from his beginnings in Hong Kong to his unique restaurant. He has been noted as one of the top Asian culinary masterminds of our time.
"Since i grew up in Asia, I know a thing or two about Chinese food. Philippe serves excellent American-Chinese food. I say this as a compliment because great Americanized Chinese could be preferable to mediocre authentic or lousy authentic. They serve a nice 3 course lunch which is the economical way to go, otherwise, it can get pricey for Chinese. For sure this is for the wealthier upper eastsiders. Atmosphere is generally good, not too noisy and you'll definitely see a few hip European tourists. Great location really - 60th between Madison & Park. When you want a quick, elegant Chinese lunch - Philippe would be a great choice."

"We make a reservation and got seated as a walk-in. My reservation was at 8:30 pm and we were seated at 9:45 pm. An hour and 15 Minutes later, what kind of reservation was that? The food was horrible, Im not sure if we chose the worst plates including dessert but it didnt work out for us. I will not recommend this restaurant to nobody and I personally will not come back."

The service was well-below average. This put a major damper on the evening. To be fair, I could only assess our waiter because he was the only one I saw in our section for most of our meal (we had an early dinner). When I spoke to a second waiter, he seemed very pleasant, so this may not be a problem in the restaurant as a whole. Others in my line of sight had similar problems with our waiter. Runners seemed prompt as did the bar service."

"I don't know if it's because I went late but If I planned better for my birthday I would have gone somewhere else. The ambiance was blah, service was OKAY, food was yummy but not super fresh. Overall experience was mediocre and overpriced for Chinese food. I've gone to the Philippe in Long Island. Food equality and service was MUCH BETTER."

"I'm not a food snob but I also find the term 'good-Chinese' food a little oxymoronic. Phillipe is about as good as you will find. While the prices are high for what still is low-grade meats with greasy sauces on them, it's at least served on nice linens with attentive wait staff. I will say the soup dumplings were something really different and served perfectly, as were the wok-fried dumplings. The noodles were pretty greasy and even my kids didn't eat more then the first bite. That said, the waiter said they are every kids favorite dish so what do I know? The sweet and sour chicken had a great sauce but the chicken was dry. Our favorite was chicken and brocolli with 'brown sauce'...whatever that is. They have a steamed menu too."

"Booked last-minute for three people and had no problem getting in on a Thursday evening. The soup noodles were nice but not as great as the ones you can get in Chinatown. The Beijing chicken was tender and delicious, though, as were the noodles with veal sauce. Portions aren't on the large side but were enough to satisfy us."

"Although I eat out at least three times a week, this was one of the most memorable dining experiences I have had. For appetizers we had two orders of the chicken satay, which are out of this world and nothing like you have ever had before. The crispy seaweed was amazing, and so light tasting even though fried. Also enjoyed the chicken lettuce wraps that come with a wonderful plum sauce. For main courses we had the crispy beef, Beijing chicken, green prawns and shrimp fried rice. It is hard to say which one was the most wonderful as they all were. I highly recommend this restaurant especially for a big crowd that can share!"

"It was such a disappointment. Never been to Chow, but heard about his reputation especially in early years. So was looking forward to the lunch experience. The food is poor, cheaper Chinese restaurants can do MUCH better. He is only serving for those who don't know anything about Chinese food. Really, I recommend anyone NOT TO GO."

"Went here for a birthday, the bill came to $100/pp. For that money, you should enjoy the food. Each item we ordered was either bad or very bland (calamari was drenched in salt, house salad was bland, chicken w/ broccoli wasn't good, kung pao was okay, cake was bland). The only thing we enjoyed was the wine at $60/bottle. Waiter was very nice but hard to understand. The lights would become very bright every 10 minutes and the AC would blast on. We were told this was automated, so it kept repeating for the entire dinner!! Overall, $100 pp should get an enjoyable meal, we will never go back and do not recommend it."

"The best Chinese food in the city, incredible. But they pack you in there like sardines so your having dinner with strangers whether you like it or not. Its also very noisy, in fact we were creaming from just accross the table to hear each other. I would try to go very early as it gets very busy later on. The food id soooo good"

"Probably the worst service I have ever had. They didn't have the wine we ordered. I ordered another bottle and they brought the incorrect year. The waiter was not going to say a word until I pointed it out. Drinks were wrong. Food order was wrong and no one cared."

"Way overpriced!!! Over 400.00 for 4 people. And it was not a lot of food. Regular sized plates are considered "for 2". nearly 70.00 for a fried shrimp dish. really? the plate was no bigger than a 10 inch plate. how much shrimp can could possibly fit in the plate!!?The shrimp was fishy. The chicken was processed and covered in red dye. Awful awful awful! i would never eat here again and I would NEVER recommend it to anyone."

"The noise level is hard to take and it would be so easy to improve that. Still, when I want really great Peking Duck, I have to brace myself and endure the negative for the positive."

"The food is very good-just like Mr. Chows. The service was also good. The big issue is the noise. Unbearable. We sat upstairs and between the music and the acoustics it was impossible to talk. They lowered the music upon request but it was still very loud. If you don't mind noise you will enjoy a good meal but it you want to have a conversation you better take-out."

"Pecking duck is a must-have! The shrimp toast was not my favorite. The chicken satay was good, but very comparable to any other Thai restaurants I have visited. Come for the duck, to say the very least."
