Located in Historic Lexington, Virginia, Southern Inn Restaurant is a successful mix of casual, but elegant dining. Proprietors George (chef) and Sue Ann Huger offer a contemporary, seasonal menu utilizing local produce, meats and other products, as well as fresh seafood and in-house baked goods.
"Southern Inn staff were so accommodating and welcoming especially on Mother's Day. They made us all feel very special even though we were out-of-towners. The food was excellent in every way from salads to desserts. I am very fortunate I was able to get an honest review of Southern Inn from the TripAdvisor. If I am ever back passing through Virginia again from Hawaii, I will certainly visit this super restaurant"

"A gem of a genteel, old Southern downtown restaurant, where you can get some classics, like fried chicken, meatloaf and mashed potatoes, but you can also get more contemporary cuisine. The menu is imaginative without being over ambitious. Tasteful interior decor, the booths are great in terms of noise reduction, and it's popular with the locals."

"My husband and I have frequented Southern Inn as it is one of our favorite places to go to. My husband took me there Saturday night to celebrate Mother's Day. We ordered our usual Blackened Chicken Penne Pasta as it is our favorite. I have to say that it was not as good or as tasty as usual. The chicken was not blackened (probably only grilled), and it lacked any flavor at all. In the past I have been able to taste the fresh basil, garlic, sun dried tomatoes and roasted red peppers. Not this time. The only taste that popped out was the pine nuts. We still enjoyed it though."

"One of the nicer places to dine in Lexington, pleasant surroundings (recently renovated), good service and reasonably priced. Menu is a little limited for lunch, but fine for dinner. Can be a little noisy if you are trying to visit and converse with friends."

"We had never been to this area before. Our B&B, The Hummingbird Inn suggested it on their website. What a wonderful place to eat. The food was outstanding. The Inn had a deal with the Southern Inn for a free dessert with the meal...and were they ever great!"

"Chef George is amazing! His love of food shines through everything - from the beautiful restaurant remodel to crisp linens to the thoughtful menu choices - it is always a delicious experience. We were seated at a table with a window view into the kitchen. The girls had so much fun trying to figure out what was going on inside, and loved watching their desserts being created in front of them. The kitchen custom made a vegetarian pasta for the kids, and a vegan dish for my husband while I splurged on the special - crab cakes. They were hands-down the best crab cakes I have ever eaten, and we left feeling fully satisfied."

"Thoroughly enjoyed this new experience in Lexington...a surprising food destination in VA. The food was very well prepared and interesting. Good wine list. Charming service. We have tried several other locations in Lexington which we have enjoyed and we will certainly make the Southern Inn another fav."

"I've eaten at the Southern Inn several times and have enjoyed each. I recently had the special Zuppe di Pesce (I think a better name would have been cioppino). There was a nice mix of fish and shellfish, severed in a bowl with veggies, herbs, and a really nice broth with several crostini. It was really excellent."

"The appetizers and entrees tasted good, and the desserts tasted very good. Our waiter was nice, attentive, and prompt. I did see another waiter drop food on the floor nearby."

"We were joined for dinner by a friend who had highly reccomended The Southern Inn and we were not disappointed. Bar and wait staff were extremely helpful (the bartender mixed our favorite cocktail after we shared the recipe with her). The bar and restaurant were very busy but staff gladly accomodated special requests. After a busy day of sightseeing we were readdy to relax and enjoy a wonderful meal in a lovely setting. We would highly recommend the Southern Inn."

"We've been several times & this was the poorest showing ever. Took a visiting relative (we're all college parents from out-of-town) saying it was "the" place of choice for parents - must have jinxed it.
Food was fair at best - in fact, we went somewhere else to eat after the SI brunch as no one ate much of their food there & we were hungry. Service was extraordinarily slow (even tho' there were empty tables) - we were there for one hour before main order arrived. It was barely warm, server checked back once (tho' water was refreshed) & finally had to ask hostess for the check.
I think this was the end of our meals at SI."

"We have eaten at the Inn previously. I made the reservations over a week ahead of time. The problem was we were seated near the bar area. Our party included an elderly person who was hard of hearing. The noise level was more than we expected. Several times the chef, or someone in the kitchen came out and 'hung out' at the bar. He had the loudest, most obnoxious laugh that we found very intrusive. Probably would not book more than a party of four in the future if that is the place we would have to sit."

"We had been hearing nothing but positive comments about Southern Inn. We booked there to celebrate Break-Out with our son who attends VMI. We were not as impressed as others who have shared their experiences. Some at our table ordered burgers. They were not cooked the way we had ordered and half of each of the burgers was completely burned. This was not noticed until the kids began eating. We did not ask for another, because of time constraints. Our server was great.
Ultimately for the menu prices, I feel our money could be spent at other locations in the Lexington area and we would be just as pleased with dining experience or enjoy it better."

"Expected more than we received. Reviews were so good and food and service was only average. Maybe we expected better since the reviews were so good. Spent more here for same type of meals than other quality establishments in Lexington."

"My wife and I had dinner at the Southern Inn on Saturday Feb 16, 2013. I ordered Southern Fried Chicken. I received two pieces of fried chicken breast, no dark meat , no bones. I thought fried chicken would contain a combination of light and dark meat attached to bones. If the menu correctly detailed this selection I would have ordered the meat loaf. The chicken breasts were good but not what was expected. My wife ordered the meat loaf. I sampled it and thought that Andy would have been disappointed if Aunt Bea served it to him. I think these two menu selections have been moved too far toward the Foodie side of the food spectrum. I enjoy comfort food and thought that was what I had ordered."

"The Restaurant has an upscale feel, clean and cozy. Everyone is very friendly, including the owner. I had a absolutely wonderful arugula/pecan salad, but my southern fried chicken was overcooked and dry with the breading falling off - a nearby diner's chicken appeared perfect. This was an unusual miscue at the Southern Inn, normally the food is perfectly prepared and served. My meal came with a side of greens that neither my or I wife cared for, perhaps this was a southern dish that is an acquired taste. My wife enjoyed a calves liver entree and found it to be excellent."

"This was a recommendation of the B&B where we were staying. It was the Saturday before Valentines Day and there was also a VMI ball so most restaurants were busy. We were seated immediately. We ordered the cheese plate for appetizer and it was very good - 3 cheeses, fruit, candied walnuts. I ordered the Ceasar salad which was a nice size and had fresh cheese. Skip the bread basket. For dinner I selected the fried chicken and swapped out the braised greens for green beans. It came with two boneless chicken breasts - not mentioned on the menu but a pleasant surprise as I preferred this. The coating was crispy and nicely seasoned."

"Wonderful food--we had the baked brie and smoked salmon appetizers and Grilled steak salad and rainbow trout main dishes, w/ Grand Marnier Creme brulee for dessert. The dessert was to die for, but everything was good. Nice service--not too much hovering. I had a Pomegranate Fizz from the drink menu. Very nice and different."

"Consistently good restaurant. It is easy to have a relaxing slow dinner if one chooses. However, it is also possible to have a quick meal if need be. Service was friendly and prompt. The promptness was almost to their detriment as we each only had one drink where had they been slower we might have ordered a second. If you would like a more leisurely experience, you should alert your wait person to your wishes."

"Birthday dinner for a party of 4. All over 70 non-drinkers. Sat in a booth - very comfortable. Table beautifully set with white table cloth. Water brought to table without asking. Menu more than sufficient without being overwhelming. 2 had appetizers. 1 was ecstatic about the raw oysters on the half shell. 4 different entrees ranging from fresh trout to reuben sandwich. Everything was absolutely delicious. Food was nicely presented on plates. 3 of the party splurged with dessert - all home made. Prices very reasonable. Had a great time. Will definitely go back!"

"We chose this restaurant based on its number 2 rating in trip advisor, and I would say that we were largely disappointed. The bar scene was great and while we waited for our table, we had great service. Once we were seated, however, the experience dropped in quality. Our meals (the fried chicken and pork) tasted like mediocre wedding food. My vegetables were completely raw (and I like them crunchy). The pork had an odd sweet flavor that was unappetizing. Both myself and my husband left half of our meal on our plate, untouched, and no one asked us whether we enjoyed our dinners. Skip the Southern Inn and go to the Red Hen, instead. You will have a much more memorable experience."
