Scratch features American cookery in an elegant setting. "Great hospitality and service for my wife, two young boys and I on Mother's day. Loved the crab cakes appetizer, excellent rib eye steak and salmon main courses, and dinner bread. Can't recommend the Caesar salad, however. Unfortunately we didn't have room for dessert. Service was superb. Much more family friendly than expected ( they expedited the kids dinner without asking, brought water for the kids in a paper to go cup, etc.). Will return."

"This review focuses on poor (but polite) service we received at dinner on Mother's Day.
We requested water four times (over 20+ min) before we received it.
We made several requests (over 20+ min) for bread before we received it.
The cheese plate we ordered as an appetizer arrived at almost the same time as our entrees. Terrible pacing of the meal.

"The portions were very small. Although the waitperson said there were five ouces of crab in the crab cake, it certainly didn't look like there was that much. My guest and I said it would have been better if there were two crab cakes as one was not enough of a meal."

"The food is fantastic, the four of us had fish. We had the special and the tuna. It was all very well done and tasty. The shrimp dish was a bit hard to eat but good. The waiters were there all the time and did not have us waiting for any food. Efficient. We had drinks and wine. A bottle of wine was around $50. I would say it was sometimes hard to hear the conversation as the evening progressed but nothing too bad. We were there between 6:30 and 9 on a Saturday night. I would recommend this place for couples or a small group to go and have dinner. We took a walk down Castro street after dinner and the street was packed with people eating out."

"We just ate at Scratch for the first time, along with another couple. The tomato bisque was spicy and delicious, and the iceberg salad our friends had seemed to please them, too. My friend had the fried chicken, and declared it excellent. Her husband had the salmon, and it disappeared in a way that said it was very good. We had the pork chop dinner, and it was superb, with an interesting sauce, delicious green beans, and a very interesting marinated pecan side. The breads were also superb. Sadly, we couldn't move on to desserts, but will plan ahead next time."

"The service was first rate. The food was decent. The local greens salad with chicken was tasty and moderate in size (so if you are making it a meal and used to big salads, order something else with it). The restaurant is cavernous but the people who work there make it inviting. They have a a prominent bar with friendly bartenders. I recommend it."

"Got in at 9:15 on a Thursday with a party of 10. Place was pretty packed, but not crazy. Food came at about 10:20, with no warning it was going to be so late, no apologies, no nothing. To top that, absolutely nothing special about the food for the prices they charge.

"This restaurant was so lackluster. The food, depending on what you ordered, was decent. The time that it took to get the food was laughable. They have a lunch menu which of course consists of sandwiches and salads and those still took forever. I would have preferred a more knowledgeable waitress as she was completely clueless that the owner of the restaurant had a proprietary red wine in house. Cascal's is directly across the street but world's apart in terms of food quality, knowledgeable and friendly waitstaff and time conscious."

"Took my parents there for the last meal of their visit. The food was excellent! The menu didn't have a certain skew towards one type of taste or another, just good ingredients prepared properly. The waiter was very friendly and bantered well with my Dad. In the end he comped the desserts since he liked dealing with us. The one knock was the noise level. The interior seems to be geared towards encouraging conversation (no TVs, couldn't really hear the music), but it was very easy to hear other tables. In fact, the loud table next to us may have played into the decision to comp our desserts, but that would only speak to the hospitable nature of the staff.
I will definitely go back."

"Went to Scratch prior to a show at the Performing Arts Center. We let them know that we were going to a show and they were great about watching the time for us. Solid service, our waiter was friendly and knowledgeable. Food was good. The stand out for us was the truffle mushroom flatbread that we ordered as an appetizer for our table of 4. It was awesome! "Nice for a special occasion. I celebrated a birthday with my spouse and a friend, and most everything was good. The service was attentive without trying to turn over the table in 30 minutes, and nearly all the food was good or excellent. The only quibble I can think of is that I had to trim a good bit of fat off of my lamb chops in order to get to the meat. The lamb itself was very good, not gamey at all. The other guests enjoyed the Salmon and a vegetarian risotto. The raw oysters were great."

"Great! Not cheap by any means, but... SOOooo good. Tonight was all about fish, as two of us ordered the Simple Fish and one ordered the Seared Tuna. Three very happy customers. I should note that the description of the artichoke/tomato side included with the Simple Fish is rather misleading, since the artichokes are only decorative--charred to an indelible texture and apparently not meant for consumption. Two of us ordered the soup, which this day was an intriguing yellow pepper & pear. I had the bacon-wrapped dates, wonderful as always. We all shared the chocolate mousse. Perfect!"

"I had brunch here on my most recent visit. Food was delicious--good recommendations from our server--but the dining room was pretty quiet--maybe too quiet. I've been here for dinner on a Saturday and sat at the bar and it was really fun--great energy--great wine (love The Prisoner) and delicious food. The seats in our booth needed a little TLC and they told us they are working to make some improvements. I'll definitely be back for dinner/drinks in the future."

"I went to Scratch on a Saturday thinking that it would be packed, but managed to get a nice table located close to the kitchen. Our server was friendly and professional, and he checked on our table multiple times to make sure we were satisfied. The food was outstanding ranging all the way from the appetizers down to the dessert. Will definitely give this place another visit and I recommend this place to anyone looking for a nice meal with their significant other.
P.S. A word of advice, if you are going to order the Oyster Rockerfeller appetizer, order two, it's just THAT good. Trust me."

"Menu was interesting. Service was phenomenal. Our server was completely attentive, had great recommendations (and an opinion when needed, which we greatly appreciated), and he noticed all the little details.
The food was decent, but not fantastic. The salad (greens with goat cheese) was very good, but our entree (rotisserie chicken) was just ok. The dish was on the greasy side and this heaviness outweighed the flavors of the food. We also had creamed spinach and leeks, which was very good, but we had expected it to provide the heavier balance to the lighter chicken. Since the chicken was not light, it was heavy on top of heavy. Would not recommend the chicken dish.

"I come here for happy hour a lot. So I decided to give them a try for sit down dinner. Unfortunately the service was slow and poor - we had to wait a long time for our orders to be taken, and it took a long time for our food to come. We ordered the mussels, and confirmed that it was cooked in a broth. When we got it, it was a cream based broth, thicker than what we wanted. And 99% of the shells were empty. We had to send it back. Tuna Nicoise was too salty - too much dressing at the bottom of the plate. I am disappointed...interior space is nice. I hope they improve as they have a lot of competition on Castro St."

"Stellar food, and an intriguing beer selection (specifically what was on draught).
In particular as well, the bourbon and rye list are impressive including such notables as New York based Tuthiltown's small batch Hudson bourbons – Baby and Four Grain both.
The pork chop was divine, with a heavenly Macaroni & Cheese on the side - comfort food defined.
And you can't miss the Chorizo Stuffed, Bacon Wrapped Medjool Dates as an appetizer – quite literally, as a fellow diner said, "meat candy"."

"Another great dinner at Scratch. Bacon wrapped dates were amazing as always. There were 7 of us, and the wait for food was reasonable. The only downside that evening is they were out of a couple beers on draft."

"We were there for Easter Brunch. I was disappointed that they did not have a special holiday menu, or anything holiday like, except short staff. We were early for our reservation, and they seated us by ourselves in a far corner not by the windows. While it was dark and quiet, it was not very festive.
The service was, plainly just bad. Long waits for all aspects especially drinks. Wait staff made lots of excuses and told stories of lack of training, lack of help. I.E." We couldn't bring your beer in a timely manner because the bartender is alone." " Your server will be with you, she is making coffee." " Sorry your coffee took forever, I hate making lattes, it's so hard.""

"The Scratch burger is outstanding! Delicious hamburger with cheddar and bacon on a housemade brioche bun, accompanied by grape tomatoes and bread and butter pickles. French fries were disappointing -- not the least bit crisp -- sort of limp. Dessert was okay but not memorable. It was billed as New York cheesecake. I've had New York cheesecake at the late lamented Lindy's and the Scratch version is more like glorified Sara Lee."

"There were 6 of us for dinner and we arrived early to have drinks. The bartender was wonderful and we enjoyed our drinks (like the focus on American products). Everyone enjoyed their dinners, especially the two of us who had the fish of the day with the choice of 3 different sauces, wonderful. The recommendations from the waiter and bartender were spot on. Thank you."

"Love their spicy margaritas. The bar staff is friendly and very courteous. The waitstaff is attentive. I've been here many times and twice, order entrees for dinner and was not impressed. Food was nothing to write home about. Now when I go with my friends, we all order off the appetizer, flat bread and salad menu and share. Appetizers and Flat breads are delicious."

"We were seated at a table and unfortunately blinded by the sun reflecting off a window across the street. The staff was very attentive and moved us over to a more comfortable table. However, we had to wait quite a while for our food, and when it came, it wasn't exactly hot. The flavors were good, but not exceptional. The noise level was a bit higher than I would have liked for conversation. I would give it another try but not right away."

"Scratch is one of the better new restaurants around. The decor, the menu selections, and the service are all well above par. The noise is awful and if you are not seated in the right spot, you basically have to shout at your dinner partners. One thing that would help is if the management did ask certain groups to be quieter...we literally had a table of young men shouting and hooting and hollering right next to us. Management walked by on several occasions but said nothing. Most of the clientele are young business people who tend to talk loudly, but not as if they were at a sporting event.
The mixed drinks are very watered down and flavorless...could have been the bartender the night we were there.
All in all a fun dining experie"
