"We were in a party of 4, and we all agreed that we felt like we didn't just have a meal, this was an experience. I've never had such an overwhelming bombardment of flavors and presentation before. Seriously, why would anyone eat anywhere else? Ever been told to save room for dessert? Well here it's a must. Holy wow. Oh, and definitely try the Bluberry Lemondrop."

"Overall we had a good experience, but our hope had been to have a fantastic dinner. The presentation of every dish was spectacular but we simply did not enjoy eating and lingering over the food as we had imagined we would.
Three of us ordered their choice entrees, two appetizers and two bottles of wine. We spent about $250 and did not have the special experience we had hoped for."

"It was my wife and my favorite restaurant nearly 12 years ago: incredible food, great service--but we forgot where the restaurant was or what it's name was. (Misplaced the magazine review that led us there in the first place.)

Over the years we came to idealize the restaurant as our "perfect" restaurant--and one day for my wife's birthday we set about trying to figure out where the place was. Some time on Google Maps, Google Street View and a whole bunch of searching and we found the place again. (I remembered, sorta, the interior being decorated with pictograms.)

After 12 years of idealizing the restaurant you'd think we'd be let down as reality sets in. But no; the restaurant was better than we had remembered."

"We go to Kemo Sabe's several times a year. This last trip was for Valentines Day (their holiday menu). The appetizer, brie, which we've had before seemed to be missing something that had made it slightly better (new brand?) before (still good & we ate it all up). Both entree's were outstanding. The Red Velvet Cupcakes were a bit dry but we were basically full so it didn't really matter. In general a good experience but I think they do better on non-holidays than on the holiday events. I would note that the last holiday we were there (Mother's Day) we were unimpressed with several things including the service & they contacted us to make it right. Overall a good experience with good food and good service this time."

"We enjoyed Valentine's Day dinner at Kemo Sabe. My partner had never been so it was a treat! I didn't realize there was a special, limited menu for the evening but it worked out great. We had the most amazing pork porterhouse and lobster ravioli. I was excited to share the potted brownie dessert but there was only one option. Even though it wasn't what I planned, we had such an incredible meal. The service was, as always, outstanding."

"The restaurant was quite noisy at times due to the fact it was packed (8pm on a Thursday). This caused the delivery of our food to take a little longer than usual, so it was a good thing we had an appetizer (which was fabulous). That being said, the decoration of the restaurant is wonderful/ecclectic and the food presentation was excellent. Food is arranged like a piece of artwork, and different and unique dishware is used for the presentation. I will definately go back. This is a great place to take a date. Next time I will try one of their signature deserts, as the table next to ours had this chocolate dish with a 9" dinasaur which was sculpted out of chocolate on top (they just starred at it in amazement for a few minutes, as did we)."

"Considering the reviews I read, this place was a disappointment, our server was very hurried, our entrees were overdone. I like spicy food, but the entrees seemed overspiced, and just overwhelmed the palette. The restaurant was very busy due to alot of walk ins, and therefore understaffed. The manager did her best to accommodate us, in a difficult situation, but with the options available in San Diego, I would not recommend this restaurant."

"My husband and I were looking for a good Cohn restaurant to try. We have already tried Prado and Blue Point Coastal Cuisine and were very satisfied with their service and selection of entrees. My friend suggested we try Kemo Sabe. Everything from the decor of the restaurant to the presentation of the entrees (not to the mention the taste of it), we were more than satisfied! Our only disappointment is that we were so full from the appetizers and the entrees, that we didn't have any room for dessert!!! I guess we will just have to make another trip out. If you do go, my husband and I suggest the Brie appetizer...it was outstanding! =)"

"We have been eating at Kemo’s since it opened over a decade ago. Always consistent, interesting, very tasty and excellent food. Debra Scott’s recipes are tremendous with flavors that are still relatively unique today.

The staff is incredible, Robert (the manager) is superb, portions are excellent with beautiful presentation, and prices quite reasonable. We bring friends and family members ranging between 12 and 89 years of age and everyone always loves it.

Highly recommended."

"This is a pricey place which I understand because they have a haute cuisine. The one thing I didn't like however was the way they handled the 2 for 1 coupon. Four of us came to dinner. They coupon clearly said one free dinner per group so I understood the deal going in. Two meals were at the top of the menu price and one was moderate and one was at the bottom end. Even though we bought wine and an appetizer, the free entree was the cheapest one. It would have been a nicer gesture if they comp'd me on the second priciest entree. It was my daughter's birthday and she got a free brownie so I let it pass, but still ..."

"The food was just ok, nothing special. I ordered the Mahi Mahi which was really good, the Tahatian Salad was just ok, nothing too special. We ordered the crab wontons for an app and they were just so so, my girlfriend even asked if they were crab or chicken, it was hard to tell. All in all it was a great atmosphere, and the service was good, but the Cohen family has better restaurants in my opinion."

"Kemo Sabe is one of my favorite restaurants in San Diego. The Brie appetizer is TO DIE FOR. "Was seated for my OT reservation when I arrived, but when my friends arrived 5 minutes later (and gave my name), they were seated at a different table. I waited for 20 minutes and then, only because I called my friend on her cell to ask where she was, discovered that I was wasting time sitting by myself for no reason. When the waitress was told about the situation, she said, "how hilarious" or words to that effect. It was not hilarious to me. When asked about the special wine list for SD Restaurant Week, she said they were "decent" and no one had sent them back. What a ringing endorsement."

"We had a reservation and when we arrived, we were told we would have to wait 20 to 30 minutes as they were running behind. The restaurant was very crowded. They sat us outside, on the sidewalk basically. The time between the appetizer and entree was quite long. The food was OK, but everything we ate from appetizer to dessert was very sweet. I don't remember many other flavors aside from the sweetness. And my chicken that was supposed to be blackened was more burned than blackened in some areas."

"Wow... We were surprised to even get in for a party that at one point was up to 11 and then back down to 8. We literally made the rez the day before. The staff, Robert the manager and Shawn our wait-person accommodated our group of wine geeks ( we all brought our own ) in a stellar manner. Very eclectic food choices, even with the rest. week menu, which most of us chose over the reg. menu. There was no shortage on flavoring. The Talapia looked and tasted amazing.. my choice for next visit. The downside was that it was a bit loud and a round table would help in trying to talk to someone more than 2 people away. Very vibrant on a Saturday night. A great choice, a nice night, I would and will go again."

"We had a reservation but still had to wait 1/2 hour for our table. Bar area is too tiny to accommodate waiting with a drink, no adequate waiting area at all. It was chilly outside, and all those waiting squeezed into the very tiny aisle in front of the door. It was confusing as to where to check in; it is around the corner from the entrance and not readily visible. Extremely noisy--was sporting a headache before I could be seated. But the food was good, and the waitress top notch. They need a bigger location!"

"This was the third or fourth time I've been to Kemo Sabe and the first time I was disappointed. The service was very slow. We were there for an hour and 45 minutes total, ate appetizers, then waited about 45 minutes for our entrees to arrive. ended up getting dessert to go. Our server was somewhat in touch with us and appoligetic. We didn't realize it was restaurant week but we did have a reservation. Upon arrival, on time, we were told there was a 20 minute wait so we opted to sit outside rather than stand in the tiny area crowded with people waiting to be seated. Would certainly never go back there again for restaurant week. After this visit my husband who has been wanting to go back here for over a year said, "that's our last tim"

"Our 1st visit as part of Restaurant Week. Started w/ shaved grana over romaine w/ lime pepita dressing - it had right amount of dressing & crunch. Partner ordered mahi mahi over chow mein noodles w/ woked vegetables. While good, hers didn't come close to my entrée: Good Things Growing, which was a compilation of grilled veggies, butternut squash ravioli, nut crusted tofu (best we've ever tasted!), tempura yams, and udon noodles. Sauces were complex with a touch of heat. Flavors & textures danced on our tongues. Enjoyed desserts: warm potted brownie w/ kahlua ice cream & berry/coconut sorbet.The large portions, romantic atmosphere, visit by Chef Deborah as we were eating, & the attentive servers simply added to the magic of the evening."

"We ate at Kemo Sabe for Restaurant Week. We were very impressed with everything: food, ambiance, service, EVERYTHING.

I enjoyed the Chicken Potstickers, Grilled Teriyahi Mahi Mahi, and the Stacked Cheesecake while my husband had the Coconut Calimari, Satayed Chicken, and the Potted Brownie with Khalua Ice Cream.

My only complaint is if they ask you if you want still or sparkling water, you are ordering a bottle of water which is $7.50+/table, so if you want tap water, you must tell them that.

I would definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone that wants to have a great meal with great service."

"We have eaten at Kemo Sabe many times and always have had extremely positive experiences. We love the food and the staff has always been wonderful and extremely knowledgable regarding the menu items. On this visit we apparently had an inexperienced waiter. Service was somewhat slower than we have come to expect. We asked if the salmon was farmed or wild, and our waiter assured us it was "wild atlantic salmon." As far as I am aware, most if not all atlantic salmon is farmed, so we asked him if he could please check with the chef. He seemed somewhat put out by the request. He came back reporting that the fish was farmed, but had been wild at one time. Obviously is not possible."

"Being an avid water drinker, I will often order only a glass of H2O to start my meal. Unfortunately many waiters take this as a cue that I will be a cheap table and therefore not worthy of their attention. Sadly, this was the case during my last experience at Kemo Sabe. My waiter started out strong but as soon as I asked for only a glass of water his demeanor quickly shifted from friendly to aloof with just a hint of annoyed. All in all, the cuisine at Kemo Sabe is fun and delicious but given this last experience I doubt I will ever go back."

"I've been to kemo Sabe many times in the past, and as always, the food was delicious. What was disappointing on this visit, however, was the service. Since it is the Cohn Restaurants Anniversary Week, my table, along with most others in the restaurant, were ordering from a very simplified Fixed Price menu. Still, the servers seemed completely confused about whose food went to which table. All in all, very disappointing!"

"Our server was outstanding; but the kitchen had lost control. Delays were long. First came prawns on a nice bed of thinly-sliced vegetables. But: BBQ sauce on shrimp? Each prawn was on a 1/4 cup of sour cream, which added nothing. I'll chalk it up to a disagreement. It was a good dish. My fish was MahiMahi. Fresh, beautiful and perfectly cooked, then drowned in a sweet teriyaki sauce that pervaded everything else on the plate. When I could get a piece of the fish away from the sauce, it was great. The noodles could have been from Peking Panda. My wife's salmon stood up to its presentation better, as salmon will. The dish had both rice and udon?! Are multiple starches "in" now? Maybe chicken and noodles on mashed potatoes will become trendy."

"We have enjoyed other Cohn Restaurants but this was our first visit to this restaurant. The menu was so unusual we didn't begin to know where to begin to order, however, our waitress, Jessica was excellent with her recommedations. We especially enjoyed the Calamari appitizer and the Anazazi ravioli. Both were presented with great style that equalled their flavor. All the dishes coming out of the kitchen looked exceptional! Special note: They feature mini-tini's which are perfect size for sampling martinis you might not try otherwise.
Desert menu is not to be missed!"

"This is a restaurant that tries really hard. Each item on the menu is a work of art and huge. The fried brie cheese is a meal for two just in itself, and I am a big-portion kind of guy. It was all a little too much eye catching ... the reality of the food, while very good and imaginative, did not match the presentation. The BBQ ribs were excellent. Service was lively and helpful. My daughter who had one of the vegetarian specials thought it was outstanding, and there was enough left to provide her with two lunches more."

"Plusses: Food was Tasty. Ambiance very nice. Minuses: While service was kind and attentive, the kitchen was extremely slow in delivering food, even after the waittress asked for it to be delivered quickly and the restaurant was less than 1/4th full. I also had gastro-intestinal issues 2 hours after eating there, not sure why but it was uncomfortable."

"Consistently good food, unique and top drawer presentation. Exotic food combinations may not appeal to everyone, but this is definitely a "dining adventure/experience" that is suitable for a special occasion, if you want something out of the ordinary, have an adventurous palette, or just want to impress visitors with a high quality San Diego dining experience. I've only visited on a weekend and it's very popular and not a place to carry on a quiet conversation -fairly loud and high energy."

"Overall it was a great first-time experience at this restaurant. I wanted to try it based on previous reviews. Food is presented very well and the overall experience great. Only issue was the server returned my bill announcing "I applied the $50 (costco) gift card leaving the remaining balance of $48.20". Well the date I was with didn't really care but had this been a first date, would have preferred more discretion."

"The food was great. We had the duck and the salmon, both of which presented intriguing combinations of flavors and textures. The suggested wines went well with our choices. The dessert was, to put it mildly, overwhelming. We shared the chocloate hazelnut napoleon, the size of which brought gasps from nearby tables. It was delicious, but the size of the kahlua ice cream scoop pretty much overwhelmed the other ingredients, and being ice cream, couldn't very well go home. It was a good thing we parked several blocks away as that gave us an opportunity to start burning a few of those calories. Amazingly, the server told us there is an even bigger dessert on the menu... The staff was smart and friendly and we enjoyed our night out!"
