Grapeseed American Bistro is a casual bistro that matches great food and wine together. With anywhere from 80 to 100 wines by the glass and approximately 325 bottle listed, we cater to the novice wine lover and to the experienced. We start with a bottle of wine and pick out the characteristics and nuances of the wine and then award winning Chef Jeffrey Heineman creates a menu item to highlight the flavors of the wine. "My husband and I were on our second visit to Grapeseed and took friends with us for dinner since we had been quite happy with the food, service and ambiance on our first visit last February.
This time the food was disappointing. Two of us ordered the gnocchi appetizer which did not look very inviting, and was next to tasteless. The brocoli appetizer was far too spicy but the chicken livers were very good. The beef ribs entrees were alright but the scallops were in a sauce which was far too salty. We had two good desserts. Service was attentive and friendly at the table but the bar tender took the best of ten minutes to look after us.
We were not impressed for the price we had to pay."

"Not to say that the entrees aren't excellent, but I could make a meal just out of appetizers: The Korean beef tips are a very generous portion, tender beef, crunchy peanuts, and eggplant; the mushrooms on creamy polenta; the fried oysters; calamari; and chicken livers are all excellent.

"Had a really nice time taking my wife out with another couple for a 'surprise' birthday dinner. Neighborhood spot in Bethesda, MD, was able to walk to restaurant. Nice menu selections, liked that wine pairings were pre-selected for each appetizer and entree. Nice desserts as well. Seating options include main dining room overlooking street, or in semi-private dining rooms surrounded by wine displays."

"Went for my anniversary and we were excited to try something new. We were disappointed though as the salads were dry and and bland. The appetizer (blue bay mussels) was un-eventful, lacking flavor and had a not so appealing odor.
The wine pairings were good and so were the Filets but this was overshadowed by slow and inattentive service. Don't think I will ever come back. I really wanted to like this place."

"We were 4, led to table in front of the open kitchen, too much heat, so moved to the front of almost empty restaurant. Hostess would not seat us at the any of the empty tables at windows, claimed that they were saving them for specific requests.
The 'new' sautéed calamari was disappointing. It arrived swimming in a puddle of a pesto type sauce, not the simple olive oil, lemon and breadcrumbs. When I asked staff about it, he defended the dish by explaining the ingredients, never offered to rectify. . The grilled ceasar was very good, but the gnocci was in a heavy cream sauce with tasteless shrimp. Two others ordered salmon, one person requested the salmon cooked through but the waiter had no idea which entrée was which."

"Used to love Grapeseed - now, not so much. The food quality is okay, but the menu feels largely the same as it has for the past 5+ years. The ambiance has taken on a more sterile, corporate feel since they expanded. I would encourage the owners/staff to bring some new energy to the menu and the decor, then it would be fun to come to Grapeseed once again!"

"We were here for Mother's Day Brunch. Portions, especially for French toast with blueberry compote, were notably small, and the burger was so juicy (not a bad thing in itself) that the bun was soaking wet. The crab cake sandwich was OK, but also wet, and the crab cake fell apart and dropped out of the bun in pieces. Desserts, at $9 each, were tasty, although not spectacular and again small. Service was mediocre. I've always liked Grapseed, and have been hyping it to my son and his wife, but this visit (first time with them) was a big disappointment. My husband said, "With all the good places in Bethesda, I would not come here again." However, I love their gnocchi ... not on the menu this time."

"There is little ambience in this restaurant and the floor plan is awkward. The food is good, but in my opinion not worthy of the prices. The wine pairings were spot on and reason enough to try again. Our waiter was servicing numerous tables and was stretched. It took a while to order drinks and the meal, but once ordered it came fairly quickly.

"The food was delicious! The servings were a bit on the small side, for the price that is. $15 for 5 pieces of ahi tuna, about the size of a 50 cent coin. I gave them 4 stars because of the service. We walked in at 8:15 for an 8:30 reservation and stood at the host stand for about a minute until the gentleman standing there finally looked up and asked if he could help. Then we were sat in the back of the restaurant, which wasn't bad at all, except that our server didn't realize we were there for at least 10 minutes. She did admit that she didn't see us and apologized. Overall, a decent experience. I do think that this restaurant tries to be fancier than it really is -- overpriced and way too loud. I will go back, but only with a coupon!"

The service was individual and attentive, and the food was was brilliantly prepared with an enticing mix of traditional ingredients and sparkling use of veggies and spices. My deep fried oysters were plump inside crispy delicious, and I would love to know what it was in the sautéed vegetables and sauce under my yummy pork chop that made the whole dish divine. I came with friends seeking excellent food in an ambience without too much noise, and found both. We were surprised that there were so few peole on a Thursday night."

"If our waiter spent the time waiting on his tables that he did complaining about having to work, it WOULD have been a better brunch. He made it clear that all were unwelcome guest for the inaugural brunch.
The Buffet was not worth $25.00 it was more a $15.99 brunch at a local Marriott.
I think they "forgot" the vodka in the Bloody Mary's. While it took 15 minutes for our server to acknowledge us he did bring the drinks within 5 minutes of said acknowledgement (we were 1 of his 2 tables) The buffet was not ready so we drank our Bloody Mary's and on an empty stomach you should have a slight buzz, NOPE not even after 2.

"Grapeseed exceeded my expectations. The food was outstanding, each dish was flavorful and well prepared. The short rib was the best I have ever tasted. It fell apart with just a fork. The calamari was spicy and balanced. The wine list was very good and the prices were reasonable. I would certainly return and recommended."

I had previously been to the wine bar, which is outstanding, ,and our waiter helped us pick a wonderful wine for our dinner. The food was imaginative but not overly complicated, delicious and well presented. Without the discount, it would have been special-occasion pricey."

"We came for the Easter brunch and were at the tail end of it, around 3:00 pm. But even though the place was empty by then, we enjoyed fresh and delicious food, including an omelete. Both of us enjoyed the selection available, as it was a buffet style setup. The service was very good and friendly and they never made us feel as if they wanted to go home. We were literally the only people there at the time we started to eat. Not that they didn't have a good day, brunch was just over by then."

"When money isn't an object (you'll spend a lot!), go. The service is impeccable--everything done just right. The wine was presented and served just as it was supposed to be done: clearly, Grapseed invested in properly training its wait staff. Unlike so many places that aspire to be classy and get it all wrong, Grapeseed gets it all right. You'll look at the menu and be sad that by ordering one thing you won't be ordering something else. Go with friends and order different dishes and share; everything you taste will be a sensation to remember."

"We go to Grapeseed 3-4 times a year. It is one of or solid stand-bys -- we have always enjoyed the food. A few comments of note this time around: (a) the service we had this visit was truly outstanding - attentive, but not disruptive, just all around superior; (b) the calamari appetizer always delivers, and we always enjoy the grilled caesar salad; (c) we have found their desserts to not be their strong suit; and (d) the menu seemed to be a bit stale - did not seem to have changed much, if at all, over the past 4-6 months; perhaps we were just a few weeks before an upcoming change."

"This is a sterling restaurant among a lot of choices for dining in Bethesda. The food is excellent and portioned well. It's creative, but not edgy dishes are uniformly delicious. The atmosphere is not pretentious or faux hip. Service is attentive and sophisticated. (No "how are you guys doing?" or leaving used forks to be reused for the next course.) This is an elegant restaurant well-suited for adults who want a great meal and to converse over dinner without intrusive background music or bad acoustics resulting in the din of fellow diners."

"I took my boyfriend out to Grapeseed for his birthday. The service was really excellent. The food was a bit too salty for both of us but we still enjoyed it. We asked to sit in the back of the restaurant because we could tell when we came in that it was loud. The noise didn't bother us so much once we sat down back there but while it's generally good for special occasions I don't recommend Grapeseed for a quiet, romantic night out."
