"Sylvain has lots of character. It's on Chartres St. in the French Quarter but could be in a secluded spot in Greenwich Village or a bouchon in Lyon. Main dining room is very noisy. When wheather is cool enough the side pation is a good option but avoid the back patio--too much noise from air conditioning units there."

"We were brought here in late 2012 by friends from the area. Loved it and came back after a conference in town. Small-ish space in an intimate setting. Food was great again. Veal sweatbreads, chicken liver crostini (yummy!), the brussel sprout salad (an under-rated star), and the beef cheeks were all great. Drinks were great too and they were nice enough to walk me through a selection of rye/bourbon based cocktails (as one should do when in New Orleans)."

"We chose Sylvain after reading great reviews. The setting is charming, the bar lively, but the food didn't impress us enough that we would want to return. it was certainly good, but we didn't think it was great. The menu was fairly limited, and although the dishes were capably executed, they lacked a "wow" factor that would have made them memorable."

"This was our third time at Sylvain. As before the food was fabulous, staff friendly. The wait time from when we ordered and when we we served our main course was over an hour. We were seated in the courtyard as requested and enjoyed the ambience but were puzzled by the very long wait. There was a very large group inside. Maybe that was the problem."

"We went to Sylvain on the recommendation of a relative who frequents the restaurant. Small quaint dining area with an outdoor courtyard just steps from Jackson Square. We had two sandwiches, Pulled pork with collard greens and a fried chicken sandwich, both were great. "I had a party of 4 to eat at Sylvain and we all had a different appetizer and entree and sampled each others. I had the pork and it was very good and the collards were very well prepared and the blend of the entree was quite nice. It is a relatively small place but that adds to a very vibrant establishment. "This place lived up to other's reviews. The food was very good, but the service was EXTREMELY slow! We waited almost a a half hour for our simple, single appetizer; and then at least ONE HOUR for our food. If our conversation had not been so good, I would have left. No restaurant is worth such a wait. While the server was knowledgeable about the menu, he did not even come to apologize about the slow kitchen. And I must note that it was not an unusually busy night. Pretty outdoor dining space."

"Sylvain is a great non-touristy option for eating in the French Quarter. The restaurant itself is adorable and cozy (its a small space, and the tables are very close) and the service was great (very attentive: my water glass was never less than half full; and very knowledgeable). The menu has interesting options for everyone, and everything we had was delicious; although the Wagyu Beef Belly, Shrimp Pirloin, and Scallops entree were especially good (the scallops were seared perfectly!) I would recommend to anyone."

"We love New Orleans and I'd say that this is one of the best meals we've ever had in the city. Everything was perfect. The menu was varied and interesting- not the same-old-same-old list found in French Quarter menus. The outdoor courtyard was rustic and quaint. Service perfect. Most of all, the food was yummy - an A+. I can't wait to go back. "The food is good here but if you are in a hurry, this is not the place to go. It took 2.5 hours to have lunch. We were there for almost an hour before we even got our appetizer (which was only a cheese plate!) Maybe they had to go out and milk the cows first??"

"Absolutely loved everything about Sylvain's! The food was amazing, the courtyard was beautiful and the service can't be beat. Had quite a few meals in New Orleans but this was by far our favourite. You can't go wrong eating here."

"Sylvains is a perfect little gem hidden away on Chartres street. The food is amazing and I honestly don't think there is a bad dish on the menu1 I would start with the beef belly and then have the scallops for your entree! Excellent service! We bring coworkers here when they visit from out of town and they are always impressed!"

"Factoring in everything, Sylvain is easily the best dining experience you will have in New Orleans. Somewhat hard to find but the food is excellent and atmosphere can’t be beat. Ordering cocktails at the bar is a must. The bar tenders are like chemist using precise measurements and at times, eye droppers to add the in-house syrups and mixes.....make sure you try the Dominique's Departure."

"The food was really quite excellent , from the salad through dessert. The pacing of the courses was too quick, however, as we received our main course before the bottle of wine that we ordered for dinner and before our salad plates had been cleared. The service was attentive, accomodating, and flexible as we switched tables from outdoor to indoor. Also our wait person was very pleasant."

"How does the cheapest item on the appetizer list become the most expensive item on the entree list? That's what happened when my wife ordered an appetizer for her main food item. When the bill arrived, the appetizer, listed for $12.50 became an entree, listed for $28, more than double what the original price was."

"Sat inside - music piped in way too loud (7 pm reservations). Couldn't hear wait staff's list of specials and we're in our late 40's , not THAT old. When we complained, we were told that was atmosphere they were striving for. May try again since we're locals, but will sit outside which means it won't be till late Oct to try that!"

"As someone who lives @NOLA it's easy to get lazy about going out. We have a few spots that are favorites, and sometimes we even cook at home. After walking by Sylvain and reading the menu about 10 times we decided to check it out,
The entry is through a side door and courtyard. Although we weren't offered a seat out there, it looked very inviting in they way these secret gardens do. The dining room is small, noisy, and fairly dark making the menu a challenge, but our waiter was helpful so all was well.
The food was perfect. The Southern Antipasti an Orange salad are both musts! The entr'ees were all delicious and unique, not just the usual Creole attempts. Very good all around.
The wine selecton is adequate for anyone. Excellent place."

"It's really easy to pass this place by. It's just off Jackson Square with just a couple of windows on Chartres Street. You enter through the alley. But the food is interesting, excellent, very reasonably priced, and a good mix of lighter fare (sweetbread appetizer and a killer hamburger) and main courses (try the beef cheeks). On top of that, the cocktails are unique and excellent. How many bartenders use eyedroppers to ensure the just right amount of special ingredients. Make a reservation or snag a place at the bar."

"The food here is great. I would highly recommend the beet bruschetta and the root beer float for dessert. The only complaint is that it is very dark and hard to see your menu for older eyes. Great if you can sit in the courtyard though."

The highlight was the most unusual Bloody Mary we have ever had! Each sip brought a different flavor.....would go back just to have another of those. "Great combo of offering small and intimate, casual, hip, friendly experience with, most importantly delicious food. We had savory beignets and a southern antipasti including pickled okra and home made mustard. We then had gulf shrimp piloo and pork shoulder with collard greens and an son mills grits. The pork shoulder itself was just ok (pulled pork shaped into small patties, but a bit dry) but the rest was really fantastic. Thenshrimp in particular seemed very fresh, not sweet but full of flavor, and very tender so not overlooked."
