"Tried out Pier 23 last week while in San Francisco. Learned of the restaurant while watching Diners Drive Ins and Dives. Day we went was chilly but opted to sit outside. It's a good experience and in nicer weather, would certainly have enjoyed more. We had a waitress that had been on the job two days. She was enthusiastic and kind and her co-worker that was training her, was extremely knowledgable and helpful.
Food was not all that impressive. Had the tuna salad sandwich and the shrimp and crab sandwich. Perhaps it was me but the shrimp sandwich, while plentiful, just wasn't very tasty.
Hope others choose to explore themselves. Perhaps they'll have a better food experience!"

"We decided to check out Pier 23 for dinner after seeing it on Guy Fieri's "Diners, Drive Ins + Dives". I don't know WHAT we were thinking... but on the show the food looked so good! We ordered fried calamari (average), fish tacos (meh, nothing special), and the crab shrimp sandwich (gross). It looked like some sort of a salad, with shredded 'crab' and tiny shrimp. It was drowning in mayo and the sandwich tasted like lemon. I couldn't take more than two bites -- it was that bad. This would be a great place to go for beers / happy hour. The location is right on the San Francisco Bay and the restaurant has a nice outdoor area. The view is perfect. Just skip it for dinner. Prices are high for not very good bar food."

"This is a casual and lively spot right on the bay. The food was good, though certainly not gourmet. Fish and chips was lightly battered - not too heavy and cooked just right. Crab and shrimp Louie was loaded with seafood, but served just on a bed of head lettuce with a hardboiled egg. A few more veggies would have been nice. Chicken sandwich and burgers were good. Ambience and view are the main reasons to come - lots of fun and a fabulous location on the water."

"Totally funky - a historic gem along the waterfront w a great view. Not too expensive, so good for a large group. Food was totally acceptable - you don't go here for a fine dining experience but rather to enjoy the view, have some good drinks, maybe listen to a live band. Service staff were attentive; the o ut of towners in our group loved it; they walked back along the waterfront afterwards to watch the bay bridge light display."

"We would come back to Pier 23, but must say that the food was a little hit and miss. While my main courseand all the appetizers we shared at the table were good, several in my party (there were six) thought the food only mediocre including what should be an easy hit for a SF water restaurant such as the Louie Crab/Shrimp salad. In fairness it was the day before Mother's day and was extremely busy!"

"It has been years since I lived in the Bay Area and ate at Pier 23 for special occasions. On a recent visit, I enjoyed treating my family to this tradition. The seafood was excellent. However, the Shrimp & Crab Louie was not as special as it used to be. It was served only on iceberg lettuce (where's the romaine?!). Some of the other treats that had accompanied the Louie (tomato, pickled asparagus, etc.) were missing. On the plus side, my siblings really enjoyed their Shrimp and Crab sandwiches accompanied with delicious seasoned fries and a beautiful mixed green side salad. I was also disappointed that the meal was not automatically accompanied with sour dough. Ordered separately and it was chewy and full of flavor - perfect."

"Had planned a brunch for some friends and was expecting the same great service I have had here before when I was here on ST Patty's day but that did not happen. Throughly disappointed and will not be back MUCH better brunch spots in SOMA/Embarcadero area. The Crab Sandwich is a good deal though but the crab was just soso at best. I usually let ok service slide BUT we spent 50.00 per person(would have spent more if they asked if we wanted drinks or refilled ) and the Group's opinion was service was bad. Food did not arrive/spaced correctly."

"We went on a night that was particularly warm and great for outdoor dining. I don't think the restaurant was prepared for the good weather and seemed short staffed, so our service wasn't the best. Also not the best place to bring children if you would be offended by the large photo of the naked butts of several women lined up at a split rail fence. They also have that photo as a gift postcard."

"We went on a Friday night and the place was packed. Our family enjoyed a beautiful evening outside on their patio. The service was good and we got our food fairly quickly. We ordered the fish tacos, fish and chips, and crab and shrimp sandwich. Everything tasted good, except the crab and shrimp sandwich which was kind of bland. "Pier 23 just gets better and better! Say bye bye to the ahole bikers who clogged up the front, now it's got huge cred and with even more outside space to enjoy the view it's awesome.
The past few years the food has been outstanding and on this trip it held up to that word, outstanding. Steak sandwich was killer, prawn quesa was perfect, fish tacos outta this world, bean dip? Killer. Whoever you have now in the kitchen is a keeper!
Our server (young dude) was on it! Always there when we needed him and even on a crowded lunch beautiful day we barely had to wait for our drinks that were made exactly how we asked for them."

"A great place to take guests without mortgaging your Bentley. A fun place too, with four (+) distinct mini-venues right on the water: bar (with music, check ahead), bar seating with food, covered patio, open patio, and stand up outside bar annex all functioning together perfectly. I have been going here for decades and always enjoy it. You can't create this atmosphere. A locale on the waterfront either has it or it doesn't. Pier 23 has it. Unique."

"Service was all but non existent. $32 for a single roasted crab is a crime. The acrid, lukewarm sauce served with it was atrocious. The burger slider was overly charred and the crab/shrimp Louise salad was wilted and browned with lukewarm crab, not cold at all. Would not reccomend or return"

"the crab and shrimp salad was wonderful as always. To my disappointment, the ceviche no longer on the menu. Instead a green papaya beef salad which was okay, but not fanastic like the ceviche. We love Pier 23."

the following dishes were A-ONE:
butter lettuce salad $14!!!! so it had better be great - and it was; not your typical salad - huge portion (3 of us shared), tons of watermelon radish slices and ripe mango; YUM dressing
cajun peel/eat shrimp $15 when you get at least 15 shrimp, perfectly cooked and deliciously spiced, that takes you back to NOLA, along with fries... well worth it
oysters $2.5 each; nothing special here - move along
fish tacos $15 3 tacos, perfectly cooked snapper, delicious sauces - great
tuna sandy $14.5 another home run; recommended by server - lived up to her hype
fish and chips - $14.5 subbed sweet tater fries"

"Saw this restaurant on Food Network. It's now our favorite place on SF visits. Fish tacos great as well as cioppino. Ordered flowers ahead of time and had them waiting for us on our first visit for anniversary. Staff very helpful."

"The food was very good, service is extremely slow. Stopped in for lunch with a hour to spare sadly it took an hour and half. other tables were served, party of 4 and another table of 3, eventhough we had ordered before them with only two people at our table. French fries were crisp but the seasoning was bland and only created a mess on the fingers. It would be better to leave them plane or use a different seasoning that has taste."

"Excellent Whole Crab Roasted in the Oven. Best we've ever had and an excellent salad with cumin vinegarette, greens and mango. Wine list was adequate and very reasonable prices. Oil cloth tablecloth and plastic chairs but part of the fun ambiance. Affordable, great value, great wait staff and nice people all around. We will be back and will bring our friends."
