David Todd's City Tavern is an upscale casual restaurant in a comfortable atmosphere in Morristown, New Jersey featuring contemporary American cuisine with an award winning wine list, (Wine Spectator - Award of Excellence 2012) as well as boutique beers and martinis!
"The bar area is very nice and there are ample TVs to view sports. The service is good and my martini was just right. We then moved into the dining room which I found to be a bit sterile. The service was very good. I had the halibut and my date had the filet. The fish was very good but the steak was basically just a piece of meat. It was a nice cut and was tender though. About half way through dinner, as the restaurant reached capacity, it became apparent that the place is an echo chamber. There are no sound absorbing materials in the room. We could barely hear each other speak. Unfortunately, this shortcoming will prevent my return as a diner."

"Couldn't finish the calamari - too rubbery and hard to chew, and batter was falling off. Pork Mignon was very tender but also very salty, brussels sprouts were hard and woody. Halibut was overcooked and dry."

"I've always enjoyed David Todd's for a quick bite before the theater, for a snack (oysters) at the bar or a full meal. Love their wine flights with three reds or three wines to sample. Great beer list. Fresh fish, scallops are great...super tapas."

"Attentive service. Tasty food Respectable portion sizes for price(healthy portion sizes not glutton sized or demi-sized).. Nice availability choice of red or white wine flights and beer flights, to get a good sampling of what you might want. Flights are not skimpy. Noise level on a Saturday night make for louder voices in discussions. Easy view of the outside street action."

"Food was average. Seems for each course and drinks we got one good one, and the other needed a little work. (Tasteless cocktail, little dressing on the salad, etc). Conveniently located to the Mayo center, so points for the location. Service was spotty from the wiater and the hostess that snarled at us when we walked in the door. She warmed up once we mentioned that we had a reservation."

"This is probably my 5th time eating at David Todd's. Unfortunately this past experience was probably my least favorite. I ordered a raspberry mango mojito which was weak in taste. I didn't taste raspberry or mango, which was disappointing. I ordered the duck which was delicious. My mother ordered the fettuccine and seafood meatballs. The fettuccine you can tell is homemade and was not cooked enough. It was very doughy. Thankfully, my mother doesn't mind that but I can see how that could be a problem for someone else. The desserts we ordered were par. One being the poached pear which was still too hard and not poached enough. The other was the pineapple upside down cake. We will dine here again just a little disappointed this time."

"WE HAD A 30TH BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION A FEW WEEKS AGO THERE ON A SATURDAY NIGHT AND THE FOOD AND SERVICE WAS GREAT.
oN MONDAY 4-8-13 WE WENT THERE AND IT WAS JUST 3 OF US. THE FOOD WAS VERY SMALL PORTIONS, NOT THAT TASTY AND THE PEACH BELLINI WAS TASTELESS. I DO NOT THINK A MONDAY NIGHT WAS A GOOD IDEA. WHEN I MADE THE RESERVATION i PUT DOWN A BIRTHDAY CUPCAKE AS A REQUEST, AND THE WAITER NEVER MENTIONED IT."

"Enjoyed delightful dinner -- mostly covered by tricky tray prize. Server made good recommendations for pomme frites w/3-cheese fondue, horseradish beet salad, mahi and grouper entrees and mousse in chocolate soup. Amy and I enjoyed the upscale, lively atmosphere that was neither too stuffy nor too loud, and we'd definitely go back. (dined Thur 4/4)"

"We were a group of 8 who have very diverse eating habits. At David Todd's there was something for everyone. The food was fresh and nicely prepared; the wine and beer lists included a wide variety. Our hostess was very accomodating and our charming and helpful waiter never missed a beat. It was a perfect meeting spot for us because we were all coming from different parts of northern NJ. The restaurant was conveniently located, easy to find and parking wasn't a problem (on a Thursday night)."

"We had heard great reviews on how wonderful the food was from family and friends. Unfortunately we were sorely disappointed. We sat on the bar side (the dining room was a much older and quieter crowd) and the decor and music was nice. Unfortunately the food left something to be desired. We ordered the duck confit tacos to start. There was a TON of meat in them (which some people may like, but we did not). The flavor was bland, no sauce of any sort just the marinated meat, with lettuce and chopped tomato. For dinner we had the scallops and grouper. The scallops were good. Not great but good. The dish was served luke-warm which may have been what ruined it a bit. The grouper was pretty bland and still had some bones inside."

"Dined pre theatre. Service was fast and friendly. had the foie gras and clam special for apps. The broth with chicrizo that the clams came in was delish. Could not get enough!Had the duck and the striped bass special. Both were perfectly cooked and delicious. Duck perfectly med rare and sriped bass crispy skin and beautifully moist inside. The potatoes were outstanding. Wishing they came with the duck instead of the fish but we shared. Too full so we skipped dessert. Went back after show for a cocktail. Nice bar area as well. Would overall recommend for dining of any reason in the Morristown area."

"March 2013, Lunch: Nice interior, sharp staff. The menu was light fare for lunch. Side note: no salt or pepper on the table. A little presumptuous of any chef to think his or her food is 'above' further seasoning... but alas. We both had the cream of potato soup, accented with chives... a little lack-luster. No great shakes. My guest ordered Fried Tilapia Sandwich with small salad instead of fries. He said it was good. I ordered Apple Wood Smoked Bacon Cheeseburger with Gruyere - and fries. Fries were very good. Burger was cooked medium rare, as ordered, but the brioche bun was dry and very unappealing; like a roll that sat too long in the frige. Will probably not return. :("

"This evening was just ok for me. Normally the food is fantastic here, but tonight, the food just "ok" for me.
The second issue I had was this very loud and obnoxious table next to me. The owner was at the bar and clearly saw this and ignored saying anything to them. Was a bit of a turn off, but what can you do. As soon as that group left, the atmosphere was sooo much better.
Several other tables were constantly starring over to this group and you can feel several the other people did not enjoy this.
Overall I love this spot, but tonight, was the first time in a long time that the food was not on par to the typical David Todd food."

"Second time we have been here, and both times were great. The menu has a great selection of pretty much anything you are in the mood for (steak, chicken, pork, fish). The food was tasty and the portions reasonable. They also make fantastic drinks. Both times we ate in the restaurant room, but on a non-weekend night, the bar room looks fun for drinks and snacks. The main appeal, however, is the price. I found it to be very, very reasonable compared to other restaurants in the area. The husband had the filet mignon and thought it was as good as a steak house. We will definitely be back."

"We are a family of four and went to David Todd's to celebrate a birthday. The food was pretty good for some of us, although my son did not care for the highly recommended Beef Wellington ravioli and my veggies were cold. The biggest problem with our experience was the poor service. We had to ask twice for oil for dipping bread, twice for sugar for ice tea, no refill on water glasses (three of which were emptied before we finished our entries), no initial offer of drinks once we sat down (we had to ask for some), no subsequent offer to get additional drinks once those were gone (I would have liked a glass of wine with my entree), no refill on the ice tea. Our waiter was a very pleasant young man, but not very competent."

"FOOD: Filet Mignon was cooked perfectly. Salsify accompanied the filet and was an outstanding side dish. Veal cheeks were braised in a burgundy and cinnamon glace, melted in your mouth. Oysters were fresh and delicious. Pomme frites with fondue was excellent.
Also - for scotch lovers - their flight is one of the best. $23 for 3 shots of an array of expensive scotches. I had JW Blue, MC 15 and MC 18.
SERVICE: I have to knock them down on service because they simply didn't have enough people on to cover the restaurant. Our waitstaff was excellent, but the management should take a lesson in capacity planning.
Will be going here again, and again, and again. Outstanding."

"I've been to David Todd's 4 or 5 times now. The food is great, wine list is much more interesting, especially their by the glass offerings, that the average restaurant of this caliber in Morristown. Service can be a little bit inconsistent- once our appetizers were completely forgotten, but management was quick to acknowledge and rectify the mistake. We got a free drink and a visit from the owner. They handled the situation incredibly professionally and as a result I was happy to return the following weekend. Drinks are excellent, I'm a huge fan of their Manhattans, although dessert falls short. It seems to have been given less thought and attention than the rest of the menu. Overall a refreshing addition to the Morristown scene"

"Probably the best restaurant I have been to in Morristown so far. A little pricey but the food was absolutely great. We made a really late reservation so there wasn't a whole lote of people, so don't know how it will be at other times. We sat in the bar area as the other dining area they had felt a bit empty."

"I went back after good meal but annoying ambiance the last time. Not only did they change the music that was annoying, but the owner came over, had obviously seen the review, and told me thank you for the feedback and they had gotten rid of the "track" that was playing that night. Food was once again outstanding, and you cannot ask for a restaurant to have a better response to a bad experience. It will become a regular stop for me now."

"Let me start with the decor; It is a lovely place in downtown Morristown. The service was wonderful, the host, and waitress all did a wonderful job. Example the cappuccino machine wasn't working and the waitress made a Latte. Now the food. Poor at best. I have the seared Ahi. It wasn't seared it was grey on the outside like an inexperienced home cook would make it. It was also cold on the inside. You chef needs to learn how to prepare and sear Ahi. The polenta was a cheesey mess although seasoned nicely. The fried Calamari came out in under 5 minutes and they were like rubber bands and the breading was not crisp so I question if they were fresh or microwaved. lOVELY RESTAURAN, EXCELLENT SERVICE, FIRE THE KITCHEN !!"

"Food was excellent. Would probably not go back simply because the club music playing was very annoying. I do not know what they think their market is, but it is not 22 year old club goers. Too bad as it was the best meal I have had in the area. Foie Gras burger was great. Loved the Beef Wellington Ravioli. Appetizers were outstanding."

"I booked a business lunch at this restaurant based on reviews that I read. Unfortunately, I was disappointed with the menu selection. While it is a "tavern", I expected to have a broader menu selection. The restaurant had only one other table occupied during lunch. Perhaps the reason for the limited menu is that people are not going there for lunch."

"While the food was very good. We had calamari, veal cheeks, beet salads. We would not return. We arrived on time for our reservation. After waiting a few minutes we were taken to our table by the hostess. It was one of the worst tables available. It was by an open door where people people were constantly going back and forth. We waited several more minutes for another table which was next to the original table and equally bad. With a "sour" face we were told to wait for a third table, a few tables away. Not great but acceptable. The noise inhibited conversation."
