"Loved the ambiance of this place . My wife loved the pan seared salmon and I loved the Prime rib it was cooked the way I requested. The hostess was very friendly and the wait staff was top notch, knew the menu & specials of the day. The Prices are very reasonable. The next time we are in Newport we plan on eating here again"

"Our Family of 10 met here for Dinner to celebrate our son's college graduation. Maggie called earlier in the day to confirm our reservations and when we arrived she was there to greet us. From the moment we sat down we enjoyed our cocktails, appetizers, and incredible meals. Our entire party loved everything about the Canfield House. The service was never rushed and always accommodating. Our special celebration was enhanced by the Ambience and great food. We thank Maggie and her wonderful support staff."

"We went for Mother's Day Brunch, it was fantastic. We have 5 children and the staff couldn't have been more helpful all the while keeping with upscale feel that is the Canfield House. It was an amazing buffet and we couldn't of been happier with our day."

"Wonderful food and historic surroundings. Plenty of parking on a weeknight and in the heart of Newport. Delicious the chicken and short rib items. THE BEST ONION SOUP! Don't miss it. Reasonable prices for a special occasion or night out."

"Excellent food and service every time! I held a rehearsal dinner here as well as a baby shower brunch. Maggie opened early on a Sunday for our brunch. She even had flowers on each table for us. I would highly reccommend The Canfield House!

"We dined at the Canfield House early Saturday evening. The restaurant was busy but not yet in full swing. Service was good, but the food was average. I had the Halibut with Risotto, and the grilled romaine as a salad. The salad was very good, the halibut was decent, but the risotto was very overcooked and the consistency of mush. Desserts are presented from a small tray and look like they were purchased at the bakery counter at Whole Foods. The restaurant itself looks a little worn and tired. Given all of the other choices in Newport, this one is in the middle - not too bad, but certainly not impressive."

"One of the best restaurants in Newport! Good menu selections, food preparation and wonderful service all with its own history during Newport's Gilded Age."

"I loved the feel of this place - beautiful architecture be sure to look at the ceiling. I definitely plan to return to try more dishes. The Scrod was delicious and I am very fussy about schrod! The Pork shank fell off the bone and was very flavor able. We were there when they offered 2 entrees and a bottle of wine for $35.00. There were many entrées to choose from and the size of the plates were more than enough..... we added one salad and one dessert and had a perfect night out. I would definitely recommend this restaurant. High quality food."

"Haven't been here for many years. We went to Newport, which we do frequently, and wanted to try it. Luckily we went during restaurant week (3 course $35) such a deal. We expected it to be run of the mill and were quite surprised to be COMPLETELY IMPRESSED. The Beef Wellington and Duck were excellent. Our favorite was the Baked Brie. Our server Denise was attentive and gave us time to enjoy our wine and meal. We definately would recommend this and will go back."

"Canfield House has a very interesting and historic look. The food was good, the Beef Wellington I had was cooked to perfection. My wife and I both enjoyed the Bread Pudding. The best part was the staff. Everyone was very friendly and helpful. The hostess was especially attentive. Would recommend to anyone."

"Canfield House was nice, not as dreesy as I had thought it was. Menu is varied and everyone who worked there who my wife and I came in contact with was very nice and knowledgable. The food was good, not great. The service was very good and prompt. Will go back again. Prices are good for Newport."

"We decided to dine at Canfield House (our first time) during Newport Restaurant Week. We arrived early for our 8:15 reservation, but it was half an hour before being seated, and we were startled by the incredibly uncomfortable chairs. The room is very nice - a lot of beautiful woodwork. Our server arrived - somewhat brusk, but polite. We ordered pear salad, which was very good and the lamb chops, which were excellent and should have been an entree. For our entree I got the crispy halibut, but the wasabi oil made it inedible and the fish was not seasoned and tasted bland, so I sent it back. My dining companion ordered the roasted duck with lentils, which was dry, but the lentils were delicious. We loved the bread pudding for dessert!"

"Had family in from out of town, which prompts us to look for a new experience. Saw good reviews of The Canfield House and decided to give it a try. Didn't realize this was restaurant week until we arrived and the hostess give us the special menu. Three of our group tried the special menu. We were all extremely impressed. A great variety of not typically found items (duck & beef wellington, for example). Our meals were excellent, we will definitely go back."

"Old-fashioned fine dining. Good for someone whose pallet is not picky gourmet, like me, but wanted a special meal in a fancy place. The dining room is formal and pretty. The bar area could be warmer in atmosphere -- maybe a lowering of the lights? Candles? Not sure. The owner, Maggie, was very pleasant to talk to."

"Went to Canfield House on a date. The restaurant is in a beautiful "Newport"-style house. The crowd was mostly couples and older locals (at 30 and 26, my date and I were the youngest people there on a Saturday night), so the noise level was quiet and respectful -- a HUGE plus. Food was delicious and the prices were excellent for the quality. I had the seared scallops that were cooked perfectly with a wonderful lentil and bacon side and the poached pear salad. Wine list was amazing with the most expensive glass $10, but with excellent selections. It is March and snow is still on the ground, but the outdoor seating area looks like an absolute blast for the summer. If you're in Newport, give the place a try; you won't be disappointed."

"This used to be an outstanding restaurant, but no longer. Food quality was so-so at premium prices. Meat was not tender; desserts seemed like frozen items bought wholesale; seafood alfredo lacked flavor. Calamari was bland. Pear salad still outstanding. It was Applebees food at a supposed top-level place. Disappointing."

"I am a food snob; I have spent many dollars dining at the 'best places in Newport' over the years. This was our 1st visit to Canfield House, & we were BLOWN AWAY. By far, the most reasonably priced dinner in Newport. The location was lovely... not as fancy as some others but warm & inviting nonetheless. The place appeared family-run; the service was friendly, efficient, even entertaining. What a joy! The duck was AMAZING; succulent & prepared perfectly. My hubby thought the seafood stew was the best he had ever had. To top it off, they allowed us to bring our own wine & only charged minimal corkage. Can not wait to return! And can not recommend it highly enough."

"Only problem was waiting 30 min past our reservation time on Valentines night. Seems like the interior is ready for some touch ups. Little down, even considering historic look they're going for. Once seated good service and a nice dinner."

"Our meals were mouthwatering. We started with the Calamari for an app, which was yummy but would have liked a dipping sauce. My girlfriend got the Lobster and Scallop Pie and I can honestly say I have never seen a larger scallop in my life. The lobster meat was the tails and the sauce was absolutely outstanding. I ordered the RootBeer Braised Short Rib which fell right off the bone. It was melt in your mouth delicious and the root vegetables were amazing. We will definitely be back for another special occasion."
