L'Orignal is a restaurant featuring a variety of game meats, fish and oysters. Located on a small cobblestone street (St. Alexis), L'Orignal is the epitome of a true Old Port restaurant. With a friendly and gracious staff, most of whom have been a part of the team since day one. Restaurant L'Orignal is the perfect place for all your special occasions. "This is a nice restaurant in Montreal for a visitor / newcomer that wants to taste local food, kindly served but not aesthetically overloaded or over-elaborated. The menu offers a variety of dishes carefully choosen within canadian products such as bison, deer or salmon.
It was a bit noisy when I went there but it may depend on the diners.
The wine list could be reacher but includes a bit of everything.
I really recommend the restaurant."

"I wish there was a category in between very good and outstanding - say, excellent, because that's what this dinner was; more than very good but not quite outstanding. Truly, my biggest criticisms were that the bison tartare was way too salty (but I love that it was even on the menu), and that they had run out of the wild boar by 7:15. Apart from that, the restaurant is consistently good. The new menu is delicious; the cocktails, very creative; and the service is warm and attentive. The decor exemplifies the best of Old Montreal - a historical building with a trendy new purpose. I always recommend this restaurant and look forward to going back there again."

"We visited L'Orignal Mar 30/13. The food was scrumptious (I had the halibut; my partner had the boar; and both were prepped to perfection). The wait staff, prompt and courteous, did a fine job of explaining the dishes and wines.
We loved the ambience - whimsical and cheeky (who can resist a moose snow globe?)- but not the din. The place was beyond raucous, owing mostly to a table of 10-12 guys (well past their frat house days) who were ... obnoxious. Word to the wise: when reserving, call and ask the host if any large groups will be there at the same time. If so, ask to be seated away from the action (unless noise doesn't bother you)."

"This meal was the highlight of our weekend and our culinary year so far. I had the rabbit, which came three ways with a polenta base and carrots and was just superb. My wife had the boar shoulder which was subtlely spiced and so tender. My son had the squid pasta which was lovely, but not outstanding, though I personally don't expect much from pasta dishes anywhere.
We did have to ask to be moved to another table, as we were initially seated beside a large table of some very loud men, but I can't fault the restaurant for that.
Our waitress was excellent. We heard her mention that this was just the third day for this particular menu, but she knew it top to bottom, including the cheeses on the cheese plate."

"Amazing food, the chef is very detailed in his cooking and the Black Cherry Martini was unbelievable! A very open concept restaurant so noise carries. I asked the server to move us to a quieter area and they did which was nice. The two seating times were far enough apart to allow for plenty of time to eat and enjoy! Am going to bring my man with me next time. Delish!"

"The lamb and Arctic Char were amazing! However, the spinach that came as a side with the lamb had no taste. The cocktail list is great, the great escape was my favourite! "730 reservation for 4 and seated right away. Servers were attentive but not overbearing. drinks were creative and interesting. bartender actually brought us our drinks and warned us it was strong; we replied, "make them all strong" and she obliged. Very cool! Drinks included the Caesers w/oysters, Grapfruit Martini, Voyager, Moscow Moose, and Pepper Stretch; very enjoyable. Food was also good. Appetizers were the Salmon tartare, Venison carpacio, boar terrine, and a salad which I can't remember the name of. All the apps were excellent especially the terrine and tartare. Mains were Scallops, Bison, Artic Char, and Lamb. Each of us thoroughly enjoyed our mains. We skipped dessert; maybe next time! Definitely recommend!"

"Had a wonderful meal here. Beautiful, intimate feeling. Oysters on the half shell were fresh, with three varieties. We tried the lamb duo and the duck. Both were perfectly cooked, beautifully presented and delicious. Our waiter recommended two wines, the one we chose was a very nice pairing. We also added Brussels sprouts which were fresh and well cooked. Service was outstanding, and we were offered a cheese plate for our anniversary. All in all, a fantastic evening. Definitely a highlight of our trip to Montreal."

"I've been going to L'Orignal regularly but have to say I was disappointed. They've greatly decreased their main course portions: the rack of lamb was a single bone! We waited about half an hour for menus, and somehow they "ran out" of a cocktail, but then came back with one saying that they had made us a maple drink instead (the drink we ordered was maple, and only maple was listed on the menu). Our waitress changed a few times and we didn't know who to talk to. Bread also took about 15 minutes."

"We looked for a restaurant on open table that we could escape to without the kids on a Sunday evening. We looked at the menu and it looked great.
Beautiful dining room for starters. Rustic kind of hunters cabin feel to it. They even have pine scented candles in the entrance to enhance the feel.
We were greeted by our waiter who was professional but at the same to.e charming and best of all knew his menu.
When we opened the menu we realized that it was not the same menu as advertised on open table. So we enquired and found out they changed chefs about three weeks ago.
But not to worry. Everything was amazing. We shared three appetizers, three desserts and two mains...and all were excellent.

The food was interesting-- it's not everyday you find bison on the menu, although most of the menu was typical market cuisine, but well prepared. "We ate out twice a day at excellent restaurants for a week in Montreal and this was a highlight. Outstanding food in a cozy, interesting atmosphere. Romantic even though it is a busy place. Delicious Bloody Caesars and full wine list. I had the chicken, which was crispy and flavorful, and my husband had the bison which was perfectly cooked. The oysters were good, but we had better ones at Liverpool House."

"Great food and the service was very amiable. But it was the first time we were there when it was very busy and they didn't seem to be able to manage the crowd. We were going to a play at 8:00 PM, and informed the server of this when we ordered dessert at 7:15. At 7:45 we asked for the bill without dessert or coffee. So overall very good but a disappointing end to the meal."

Very good food & service! Soft light (I like that) You gotta try the ''terrine de sanglier'' & ''l'omble chevalier''!
Little bonus: I also liked the fact that our waitress has made an effort to speak in French despite that she was anglophone."

"Our second trip back this year and again, absolutely superb. Creative dishes, very high quality and fresh ingredients top of the line preparation. The oysters are some of the best in montreal. Maybe a new chef based on reviews, but no loss of quality at all!"
