"Although we have lived on Maui over 23 years, we don't do hotel restaurants often. Several friends recommended the food and I have to say the sushi is excellent. Our pupus were also very good and the bartender (John) was excellent. We weren't crazy about the crab dish - too much sauce. But overall, the view is excellent, the service is great and an easy place to get to for a cocktail and a quick bite or a full dinner. We will go back!"

"Nestled in the corner of the Hyatt Regency overlooking the Pacific, this restaurant offers
some of the best sushi that Maui has to offer. Service is great, superior portion sizes at a great price. Fish is fresh and is better value than driving to Mama Fish House which is over priced and a tourist trap.

"Japengo is a beautiful setting with almost nothing else going for it. It would be expensive even if it were good... the fact that the food is poor makes it truly extravagant. Tasteless sashimi and sushi. We ordered the mixed special fried rice and had to send it back, no pork, no shrimp, no chicken ... no flavor... how can anyone make bad fried rice?
We felt taken advantage of when the check came. Avoid Japengo!"

"I have always wanted to try this place when I have stayed at the Hyatt Maui. The service was horrible from Hostess to Server. The food was sub par. You can get better sushi at your local sushi restaurant and pay 1/3 what we paid for our meal. I really wanted to like this place - but it was horrible."

"We celebrated my husbands 46th Birthday. They sat us outside, it was a little windy but the view was gorgeous amd my kids loved it. Our waiter rocked, I think his name was Joey. He brought our 6ur old daughter a towel just in case she got cold. He new the menu and every small detail. Our filet & prawns were awesome!! Hamachi Kaka is a winner for a starter. I would highly recommend this restaurant and will be back, but please put creme brulee back on the menu!!"

"Everything the waitress recommended was bad. The watermelon ahi was a weird combination, the Tootsie roll was overwhelmingly salty. The only thing WE wanted to order and liked, the crispy ahi appetizer, the waitress recommended we only get a half order. Mistake! We were looking forward to fresh interesting hawaiian rolls but we have better than this in CA. The wines were only so so too. The atmosphere was beautiful, the lighting and the water, perfect. Live music in the bar/waiting area was nice. Maybe sashimi or sushi would be better. $100 for 2 apps, 2 glasses of wine and 2 rolls of this quality wasn't worth it."

"We were lucky enough to sit outside at the very edge of the restaurant. The weather and sunset were dreamy. Kathleen took great care of us and was very attentive. She was professional and thurough. We left filled with the best sushi any of us had ever had. What a great restaurant setting and menu. We also had a very helpful busser who's name I didn't catch, but definately deserves praise. We will be back!"

"We were pleasantly surprised by our service from Joey, especially after feeling not-so important when we checked in with the host, Jimmy. Sushi was amazing and the rolls were much larger than the other sushi restaurants on the island. I had the pork chop and hash; delicious! My friend couldn't stop talking about the forbidden rice with her mahi. Great food and service, once you get past the front door."

"this is kind of an odd place. sushi menu was good, but limited. main courses were excellent tho somewhat "oversauced." they tend to be a little too salty as well. some people like that. but we prefer to add our own salt. they have a great bar, very relaxing setup. the interiro dining area is a little weird, but comfortable. the outdoor dining area is nice and has a great view. waiter was great. the wine by the glass "list" is great."

"We were recently down for 10 days in Maui 4 vacation. Turned out James Taylor was playing Maui. We stayed at the Westin but when we tried to add an extra night to our stay-they were sold out--lucky 4 us. We stayed at the Hyatt. Serendipitous as we found Japengo.
Its is a remarkable spot. Everything from its menu to servers and location are superb-quite wonderful. Their cuisine is "Pacific Rim." Lots of fish but excellent meat-veggie too. Oriental influence-but a little bit of everything. Their preparations are the finest around--truly innovative.. We came back for dinner a second time. Unprecedented for us as Maui-goers of long standing. Japengo is our new fav on Maui--

"We had a fabulous birthday celebration - A quiet table per my request with a spectacular ocean view and sunset. This wasn't our first time and still the sushi exceeds our expectations. Bobby and Gerry took exceptional care of us!!! We all savored Bobby's recommendation for the Tootsie Roll along with my favorite Tempura shrimp roll. This was a first time for our friends and they are going back for a special romantic dinner. This is one of our most favorite dinner spots and we always look forward to the ambiance, the attentive and helpful staff and the delicious food."

"The calamari appetizer I ate as well as the China Town Chow Fun and the Japengo Fried Rice were all excellent as was the service. A terrific feature of the restaurant is half servings at half price for many of the restaurants offerings, allowing diners to try many more dishes.
The location of Japengo as well as the ocean view of Lanai and Molokai cannot be beaten, particularly during certain months when the sun sets into the ocean between the two islands.
While a bit expensive, this is a special event establishment that tourists and locals should experience whenever possible."

"I used to think hotel restaurants were not usually very good. Well,after dining at Japengo at the Maui Ka'anapali Beach Hyatt Hotel, I have revised my opinion. This has to be the best view, best food and greatest service I can remember at any hotel in the world. The Asian fusion cuisine is delicious and interesting,and the offering of half size plates enables us to select several dishes to share at half price. Since the offerings are generally quite expensive, the half size at half price is most appreciated."

"My husband and I got a rare night away from the kids during our recent Hawaii vacation. And, the night was extra special as we were celebrating my birthday that had fallen earlier in the week. When we arrived, my husband told the host that we were celebrating my birthday, and as such, "Jimmie" arranged for a lovely table on the point. Then, our waiter, Joey, was superb. Fantastic service all around. I didn't care for my menu selections though... yet I think it was my own taste and not a situation of poorly prepared entrees.

"I went to this restaurant with 3 of my friends, and when we got there we got sat right away. The server was nice at first but as the night went by she didn't check up on us at all. we were already done with our food and had to wait 20-30 mins for a dessert menu to be dropped(but we already had picked out our dessert). Had to wait another 10 mins for our dessert order to be taken. Overall, I was not satisfied with the service at all. May I add 15% gratuity was INCLUDED for a party of 4! Food was okay, curry dusted calamari was good so was the fried rice;sushi rolls had too much rice and sashimi was cut in thick blocks."

"The reason I have only 2 stars for overall was because they lost my reservation and were not very accommodating. We finally sat in the lounge area because the hostess looked lost and didn't know what to do after standing there for 15 minutes. I made this reservation well in advance and they were not even busy. We were also staying in this hotel so I felt we should have been treated better. I work in food service so to not be offered any free drinks or apps is a big "no no"!!! Such a shame, beautiful location for dinner and ruined!!! We had a great server though!"

"Once we got to the table, the service was great. The people at the host stand including a manager did not seem to care at all. We arrived a few minutes early and the manager told us to wait in the bar and come back to the host stand at our reservation time. Apparently they were all too busy folding menus to check us in at that time. The bar waitress was not much better.

"Overpriced hotel restaurant with subpar food. We went there for the view and were sat with one, but as soon as the sun went down they lowered a plastic canopy that ruined the ambiance. The lychee martini was the best thing of the night. The duck potstickers did not taste like duck, in fact they were tasteless and the dipping sauce had no flavor at all. The miso soup was fine but not worth $10 a cup. The fried rice ($26!) had lots of ingredients but it was overall very bland. The final blow was the 2 sushi rolls we ordered. The rolls were "normal" size but the fish on top was old, dry, thin and transparent (you could see the rice through it), all at twice the price we pay at home in SF. VERY disappointing."

"Enjoyable evening with good food on Valentine's Day for our us and our friends. The only downside was that all of the ceiling fans were still on full blast after sunset and we got cold and so did our food from the fans. One of the people in our group asked a server to turn down the fans, which they did, but only the fan directly over our table. All of the other fans were still on full blast."
