The Blackbird

The Blackbird has just moved from Black Mountain NC to downtown Asheville.
We are now open and serving both lunch dinner and brunch!
Our menu is Modern Southern with a "nod" to tradition, fun, vibrant and all locally sourced. Our Farm to Table menu changes seasonally with many daily specials. All desserts made in house including our fresh daily ice creams. Our new space is "handcrafted modern" with contributions from many local artists even the tables are made from local pecan wood! We are right downtown at 47 Biltmore Ave on the ground floor of the new Aloft Hotel.

"We went to the Blackbird in the middle of a rain storm and wary about a restaurant in a hotel but were very much surprised! It started with a perfect Old Fashioned and ended with a wonderful Coconut Cream Cake. In between was exceptional food -- soft shell crab was perfect, oysters, scallops and jalapeno corn bread -- yummy. In fact the scallops were better than the ones we at at the Grove Park Inn the night before!!"

"Service was nonexistant. Order was taken and check was brought, nothing in between. This is a bar that serves food, and a very loud bar at that. Food was mediocre, many other better restaurants in Asheville. Late night gathering place for a few drinks is the best that I could say. Due to size limitations though, only go in small groups."

"We had heard good things about Blackbird so tried it with some out of town guests. The pros: had a table right next to the street with an open window on a beautiful night, service was attentive and friendly. Cons: the food was good, but not as good as I was expecting. Had high hopes for the coconut custard cake, but it was coarse and a little dry. The custard filling was nothing special. The other diners had similar reactions - it was good, but not great. We probably won't go back any time soon. The tables are a little close together, but we were in a corner location so it wasn't a problem. Suspect it might have been had we been more centrally located."

"Clean, sleek interior but tables were very close together. Our waitress had a phenomenal knowledge of the menu as well as the wine selection. Food was actually underwhelming (which was dissapointing). I ordered the duck breast- which was overdone. I think sometimes restaurants are afraid to serve meat a true rare/medium rare. The pesto risotto had great flavor but was very underdone. My haricot verts on the other hand were perfectly cooked. Husband ordered Shrimp & Grits - which is his favorite meal. They were not quite as rich as they are traditionally served over in Eastern Carolina. The "Best Ever Coconut Cake" had a very yummy frosting and filling but the cake itself was DRY. Overall a good meal but definitely needs some fine tuning."

"We have enjoyed several meals at The Blackbird and it was our choice over all Asheville restaurants to take our out of town visitors for lunch. While we all thought the food and service were outstanding, the open windows on a weekday made for a great deal of noise from delivery trucks. That said, this is the ONLY complaint we have ever had about The Blackbird and we definitely plan to visit again."

"Our meal was just shy of being what I'd hoped for our group; fried soft shell crab appetizer was not the tender crispy delicacy I'd hoped for, but my sojourn in Louisiana has made me picky; my risotto was a little underdone and the drum entree was short of flavor in the preparation, though it was adequate....
there was nothing particularly noteworthy in the meals we had though our party did not leave dis-satisfied. Desserts were a notch above, including the layered chocolate confection, and the coconut cake. Overall, the kitchen is not quite up to the standards of some of the other top-tier restaurants in Asheville, but it's well-located downtown, staff was attentive, decor and atmosphere pleasant.

"...But I'll definitely be back! The menu was great. I had the trout and it was cooked perfectly. You could tell the fish was fresh. My friend had the duck breast and she loved it. We both got cocktails off the menu and they were super. We didn't get dessert this time, but we'll definitely be back for that.
The only complaint I could think of would be that it was pretty loud in the restaurant. That might have been because there was a huge birthday party going on over on our side of the restaurant. I definitely wouldn't count that against it as far as going back though.

"The restaurant is gorgeous, our server was excellent and the wine list is extensive, unusual, and satisfying. After a promising start with salads, our entrees were very disappointing. I ordered a ribeye, rare. The steak that arrived was cooked to medium with zero seasoning - no salt, no pepper, nothing. The au poivre sauce was a weak gravy with no flavor. The steak was so tough it was hard to chew. The succotash was flavorful, but the fingerling potatoes were overcooked and unseasoned. My husband ordered the fish of the day, a yellow tail snapper. The fish wasn't bad, but the risotto tasted overwhelmingly of thyme. Overall, the food is unbalanced and sophomoric. We had a MUCH better experience at The Admiral the next night."

"Great place with great food. The shrimp and grits were amazing, and I don't usually eat grits so that's saying a lot. Also the coconut cake was fantastic. It is something everyone should try at least once. I also had their deep fried jumbo shrimp with Cajun spice. The shrimp were HUGE and the sauce was delicious. I also had the fresh fish of the day for my entree, which was snapper and seared scallops over a thyme risotto and green beans. The scallops were seered perfectly and the fish was delicious. I didn't care too much for the risotto however. I thought it was a little mushy and the flavor was alright, but nothing to remember. Even so, I highly recommend the restaurant and I would go there again!"

"Enjoyed this new restaurant in Asheville. The food was excellent ... My hubby is not an inventive eater but enjoyed the NY strip steak with a fabulous sauce. I enjoyed mine as well along with the red pepper soup. There were many exciting dishes as well. There was a great wine list and the desserts looked amazing. The steaks were large so we did not indulge.
Service was well paced ... Reservations are advised.
Only negative was the high level of noise and tables were very close together.

"On my second visit to Blackbird (the first having been Thanksgiving dinner) I was generally pleased with the offerings. I opted for the scallops appetizer and the arugula salad with goat cheese, pecans and poached pairs. The scallops were cooked to perfection on top of a yummy succotash. The salad was a bit disappointing. I ordered the large one and found it to be a large pile of arugula with a skimpy amount of poached pear and goat cheese. There were enough pecans, but I left feeling underwhelmed by the salad. Dessert was a 10...lemon mousse cake! Service was attentive yet verged on obtrusive. The ambiance is very current in style...clean lines and soft colors. I'll go again. My companion's meal was said to be excellent."

"A guest and I both loved Blackbird for brunch on a rainy Sunday. The space is light and airy with minimal decor in lovely colors, featuring a wonderful wall of blackbirds in silhouette. Food was top notch; both the day's Breakfast Sandwich and the traditional Farm Breakfast were great - fresh-fresh eggs, creamy grits with savory seasonings, perfect biscuits and good coffee. And dessert - oh my. The Frozen Lemon Souffle was incredible, a tart and creamy cloud-like cylinder on a slice of corn-bread pound cake with blueberry. Amazing. We will definitely return."

"we had previously tried to eat here at the Black Mountain location, but were completely turned off immediatly. the hostesses were rude, and told us without a reservation our only option was at the bar. which was fine with us, but we sat there for over 10 minutes without being greeted, and left. so, to try you again, we were a bit nervous. much to our surprise, everything was really great. Service was a little slow, and our server "Stanley Steemer" didn't have much of a personality, but we were with friends, and didn't need the additional entertainment. My biggest concern, was the 20% gratuity that was added to our check, I'm assuming for the split checks, but we were never told about. My fault for not seeing it, but you should be told."

"The Blackbird is the rare combination of quality food and great service. The menu is fresh without pretention and offers a variety of southern favorites. It is my go-to venue for client lunches or with my girlfriends. The noise level at dinner has been distracting in the past but I notice that acoustic panels have been added, so kudos for addressing the issue. When someone asks for downtown restaurant recommendations, The Blackbird is always at the top of the list......and their coconut cake!"

"Frankly we were disappointed both with the service and the food. We made a Sunday brunch reservation and arrived to a nearly empty restaurant at 10:30 should have been a tip off. We had done a lot of online research to chose a special place. The menu was different than online, I had to get up and ask for water, and salt. the waitress apologized for leaving us sit for over 15 minutes to get our check and the bartender actually came and cleared our plates when I went up to ask for more butter( third trip for a needed table item). My husband loved his farm breakfast and my son enjoyed salmon Benedict, but my cheese plate was not good and I left more than half of it, and our daughhter's banana French toast was so sweet

"The blackbird was a great experience. I had the catch of the day which was striped bass and it came with scallops, both were delicious. "This restaurant's move from Black Mountain makes a very nice addition to the Asheville downtown dining scene. Modern decor with attentive and helpful servers. Our party proclaimed the scallops the best in town, if not globally! The pastry chef-owner has a triple chocolate concoction which was a hit with our younger diners. Fresh seafood and a creative menu make this a sure-to-return choice."

"We went to the Blackbird with the idea that there would be multiple dinner items since it was Easter Sunday. There were only two, and they did not appeal to us. There was a significant brunch menu, so we each ordered one. They were satisfactory, but I wouldn't go beyond that. The service was horrible. We waited well over 30 minutes after ordering, and there were people at other table who had come in after us who received there order before us."

"We were not greeted upon arrival, then an inapporiate event occured and no manager/chef appeared to appolgize. The servers knowledge was great. The food presentation was beautiful, however, my vegatables were cold. I will not recommend bringing anyone who could easily be upset by inapporiate behavior. We had a bad experience and I called several times to contact a manager and was always told no one was available.
I try a new hot spot each week, so that I can tell people first hand where to eat. I do feel that this was opportunity that could have been handle differently.

"We had read reviews about Blackbird but WOW!!! it was better than what we had expected. It was Ann's 70th birthday and I wanted to take her someplace special. Didn't tell her where we were going and she didn't guess till I pulled into the underground garage. The food was wonderful and we were not rushed from one course to another. Beau was our server and knew the answer to all our questions. After two hours we left feeling we had been to a special place on a special night. We will be back many times and have told our friends how much we enjoyed our night."

"This was my first time at this restaurant and overall it was a good experience. The food was very good and was served as ordered. I have to say that the two downsides were that the server was a bit put out when we asked questions about the beer and the menu. Not rude just seemed a bit irritated at the questions. The other thing that happened was some type of disagreement in the middle of the restaurant between one of the waiters and the manager. The waiter raised his voice and dropped the "f bomb" where everyone in the restaurant could hear it. Not really a great first impression."

"Recently celebrate my birthday at The Blackbird and enjoyed it thoroughly. Very healthy wine list, creative cocktail specials, and a fun menu with a focus on locally sourced ingredients, which is what brought us to try it in the first place. Prices were fair for the quality and quantity of food. The restaurant has a great vibe and we went on a temperate night when they were able to open the large windows facing the street. Service was on point with good attention from both the server and sommelier. Don't miss the coconut cake!"

"This restaurant had been recommended so I admit I had high expectations. Unfortunately, they were not met. The tapas selections I chose were crab cakes and scallops. The scallops were chewy and overly salty and the crab cakes didn't seem to have any crab or flavor of any kind really. They tasted like cornbread. It was also quite crowded and noisy, so not the romantic dinner I had envisioned. I much prefer the scallops at the Admiral and the crab cakes anywhere else in town. On a positive note, the French Press coffee was good."

"The ambience and vibe was of an urban spot, like something you'd find in Atlanta or LA, all grays and blacks, very stark and elegant. Our waiter was wonderfully attentive, the service was super fast and the vodka martinis were perfect. The food was nicely presented but uninspiring, flavors were either bland or too salty depending on the dish, not a lot of imagination. But for the price and the atmosphere, it's certainly a place you could hang out in."

"The Blackbird was a major disappointment. At its previous location in Black Mountain, we had enjoyed it - a lot, and had looked forward to a similar experience now that it's in Asheville. We went there for the independent restaurant association's Small Plate Crawl. Compared to the other four restaurants we visited on the Crawl, Blackbird's plates weren't just small - they were TINY! The server was pleasant and told us when we ordered how small the servings would be. After we finished, she said the kitchen was surprised we were filled up on just the amount they had served. The salad was a reasonable size, but the pork slider and the shrimp and grits were both unreasonably small. The flavors were okay, but not special. We won't go back."

"My wife and I visited The Blackbird for Valentine's. We had a superb experience. The waitress was prompt and attentive, the food was outstanding and unique, and the restaurant itself is tastefully decorated and pleasant. We left raving about the place. We told all our friends (who hadn't already been there) that it was special. Really, the only downside was that it was slightly on the expensive side, but it is worth it for the whole experience."

"Our meal at Blackbird got off to a wonderful start with the fried oyster appetizer ($8). The oysters were plump and juicy, the breading was light, and they were perfectly fried.
The rest of the meal was slightly downhill from there, but still enjoyable. My New York Strip ($25) was just a supermarret quality steak, but the Zinfandel wine sauce and buttermilk mashed potatoes with fried onion rings made the dish. As her entree, my wife had appetizer portions of seared scallops ($8) and shrimp and grits ($7) -- the scallops were tasty but the shrimp and grits were just mediocre with no special flavors or style. Definitely not one of the best versions in Asheville, my spouse said, and she has probably tried nearly all of them."

"We were very excited to try this restaurant. The overall experience was disappointing, & the price you pay for the food, we thought, was not worth it. I ordered the catch of the day, grouper. It came w/scallops, green beans & risotto. The green beans were the best part of my meal. The scallops were pretty good as well, however they, along w/the rest of the food, were only lukewarm when brought to the table. The risotto & the grouper tasted as if they were seasoned w/butter, lemon, & salt....nothing outstanding. My husband ordered the surf & turf burger. The lobster was overcooked. Burger overall bland. We ordered appetizers. Received those with no plates to eat from. Server was attentive w/drinks, nothing else but knew the menu well."

"Great service. The oysters were the highlight of the dinner. I was really excited to try the coconut cake but as others have mentioned on here, the cake was very cold and got better as it came to room temp.
