The Pirates' House Reviews List

The Pirates' House

The entire family is sure to enjoy Savannah's most intriguing & historic restaurant. At the Pirates' House, our most precious treasure is the food. Situated in Trustees Garden, merely a scant block from the Savannah River, the Famous Pirates' House is the most historic spot in Georgia. The Herb House, erected in 1734, located inside the Pirates' House, is said to be the oldest house in Georgia. The Pirates' House first opened in 1753 as an inn for seafarers and fast became a meeting point for blood-thirsty pirates & sailors. Enthusiastically recommended by AAA, Food & Wine and Redbook.

"What a historic gem! Delicious food in a historic and intimate setting. I tried the luncheon buffet and what a treat. A great selection of Southern cuisine with healthy choices. The fried chicken is to die for. Imagine sitting in a friendly, comfortable restaurant constructed in the 18th century eating comfort food. You won't be disappointed.
The staff is professional, friendly and provides attentive service."

"Excellent lunch buffet. Must try to squash casserole, not good for you but good for the soul. Atmosphere was great along with the service. It was not crazy expensive but you might want to make this a late lunch and eat a light dinner later one. The food was very filling. Bill was around $80 with the tip for 4 people. I guess that's not too bad for a large lunch in Savannah."

"The setting of the restaurant was intriguing...very different. However, the bill was $70 and that was with my husband and I sharing a meal. We didn't order drinks or appetizers. Our food (chicken fried pork chop...?) had no taste and was dry. The spinach was disgusting and I like spinach. The salad was covered in goat cheese that made my stomach turn. My son didn't even like his ribs. They honestly tasted like they were overly doused with bottled barbque sauce. I was very disappointed and felt we wasted our time and money. I won't be returning."

"Pirates House may seem a tourist trap, but the shrimp, oysters, and crab were delicious, and the charm of eating in the oldest house in Georgia, the Herb House, was the highlight. Our server was delightful, and our table in the perfect spot. plenty of free pRking. Don't miss it."

"We were a group of 3 one being a visitor from Denmark. We all had the swordfish special which was the best piece of swordfish that i have ever eaten. Our visitor had never had swordfish before as it not fidh native to Denmark, she truly enjoyed it. The pirate who ce to our table was extremely well educated and travelled and spoke several languages and made our visitor feel right st home. She invited him and his family to contact her on his nrxt trip to Denmark and she would show themall the right places to visit. A superb evening for all. Thanks pirate's hoise."

"Every time we've been we've had an amazing experience and Mother's Day was no different. Thankfully we were put in a well lit back room with other families with children so as not to disturb those celebrating without children. Our waiter was wonderful. He was there when we needed us but not bugging us when we didn't (which is tough when you're battling with two toddlers and getting them to eat). This is a restaurant I see our family spending all major holidays and special occasions for many years to come!"

"We live in the local area but this was our first visit to the Pirate House. It was Mother's Day and there was a small crowd waiting when we arrived. We were seated quickly and received excellent service. The food was delicious and the atmosphere was so nice. The building itself is historical and was decorated nicely. There is plenty of off-street parking, which is rare in downtown Savannah. We look forward to our next visit!"

"We wanted to enjoy the experience of this historical location but we knew what we wanted to eat when we sat down & I guess made the mistake of ordering everything (app & dinner) at the same time expecting we'd have time in between to sit & enjoy. When our food came out quickly we were a bit disappointed. The food was good, the atmosphere was fun. We visited early in the evening because we had scheduled a walking ghost tour. It appeared that the restaurant was about to have a bus full (they have large dining rooms to accommodate tours) so maybe the kitchen was trying to get the food out before they got really busy.
Overall the food & drink were good. We'd visit again & just plan better."

"The Pirate's House has been a favorite of our family for more than 45 years. If that isnt enough of a statement about this restaurant then too, bad. I have been dining here since I was 4 or 5 years old, I'm now 50 and I still like it just as much as I ever did."

"Although the food was very good, I could not wait to get out of there fast enough. The constant parade of ghost walkers (or whatever they were) began to grow more than tiresome. They walked in between the tables and we happened to be seated right next to that little dungeon and entrance to the old house. They were all talking and the guide had to talk loudly to be heard. I was not able to enjoy a quiet conversation with my wife. It was like Grand Central Station at rush-hour. We decided to forego the dessert because of the distraction.
We will not eat there again on our next visit, which is a shame."

"Great experience! Very energetic. The place was packed. Lunch was great. We had a party of 15 split into two tables. Our server was great, getting everything right considering how busy they were. Reasonable prices. Costumed employees dressed like pirates came around to the tables. A great touch! We had pictures taken with them. Lots of fun. Everyone enjoyed themselves."

"The fried chicken was good but the portions are huge so my husband and I shared (we both have good appetites) . The service was amazing but it was very quick and the "pirates" who visited our table were not at all convincing. Our reservation was for 7 pm on a Saturday night and we were finished by 8.15. Great key lime pie and reasonably priced."

"We made reservations at Pirate's House because my two travelling companions had fond memories of the restaurant from many years ago. And I suspect it has not changed a lot since those many years. "I was born in Savannah and on our visit to the Pirates House I was a little disappointed that the Carolina Trifle is not being offered. I know
it was discontinued several years ago. That was part of the treat of going to the Pirates House....I know it has changed hands over the years
but that should have been one dessert that they kept.

"Food was good, especially crab soup. We went toward the end of the evening (weeknight) and the waitress seemed tired and a bit disinterested. I overheard one of the other waitresses nearby and she really made an effort to make sure her guests knew about the history of the restaurant, menu items, made some area suggestions, etc. Would have been nice since it was our first night in town for a long weekend. Would go back perhaps as part of a tour to see the rum cellar or try buffet and see if we could get a different experience. Worth another try."

"FANTASTIC!!!!! Best shrimp scampi I have ever eaten!!!!!!!!! The husband had salmon that had to weigh at least 3/4 of a pound and really enjoyed it. They brought us cake as a surprise to celebrate our anniversary. The room we sat in was built in 1734, the oldest existing building in Savannah. A true gem...don't miss this one!"

"Our first night in town we had a reservation after reading the reviews.
What a great place to start our vacation. The history here combined with the ambience was fabulous.
They servied us without a doubt she-crab soup that was the best we have ever had.
Great cornbread and biscuits with sweet butter or marmalade.
WE loved the chicken and biscuit appetizer dripping with tasty gravy. A large serving for an appetizer. After having the rolls, she crab soup, and the tasty chicken appetizer, we both wished that we hadn't ordered the entrees, as we were both stuffed.
I went with the crab augratin as my entree but it was just ok.
Hubby went with the shrimp creole which was really spicy and was just ok.
No room for dessert. Ask for a tour!

"The food was alright. I chose to do the lunch buffet which was good for the price. Would have been nice to have just a few more protein type items but can't really complain about the overall price.
Only thing that was disappointing was the fact that I did make a reservation and showed up at that time. I told the hostess this and she told me that if I wanted a table I'd have to wait 10-15 minutes or I could sit at the bar. Luckily a table opened up so I didn't have to sit elsewhere. I would have been nice for the hostesses to be prepared for this.

"The food and service were better than I expected.
We were seated in a dining room that is obviously the latest addition to the restaurant (new and clean), but I would have preferred to be in one of the really old rooms for the experience."

"My wife, daughter (11) son (2.5) and I were returning from a weeklong trip to Disney. It was my daughters birthday and we were driving back from FL. We looked up places that would be cool/fun and have some history...which could accommodate us on a busy day for a birthday lunch. I used open table to book the restaurant (heavy user) and put the birthday ask for my daughter in the notes. We got there. It's the oldest house in Georgia. Tons of kitsch and pirate themed stuff. Well done. Cool atmosphere. The place was jammed yet they seated us within 5 minutes of our reservation time. Food was yummy. Great buffet for kids. All in all...I jaded NY'er would say...get to this place. My daughter loved the lunch. Phew!"

"The Pirates' House was nice, if not a bit of a tourist trap. The tour buses drop off there and the local tour trolleys stop there as well. The service was fast and efficient, but I felt that my BBQ spare ribs weren't quite up to snuff. My wife raved about the pecan fried chicken though. And, the portions were great."

"We were in Savannah for the afternoon and enjoyed having lunch in this historic spot. We sat right next to the opening that led to the old rum cellar. Our server was great and ended up being from our home town. Nice wine list and we tried the southern buffet. The menu items the others around us ordered too. The food wasn't anything outstanding but it was a fun place to visit and the kids enjoyed the key lime pie and cobbler that was included with the buffet. The pirates that stopped by to visit our table were amusing as well. It was interesting to hear stories about the house."
