Jacob Wirth
We are the 2nd oldest restaurant in Boston and the longest consecutively running tradition in the city. The original round mahogany tables and bar have welcomed one and all both young and old for over 142 years. Share a meal and moment in history where the people who built Boston did. Where Larry Bird came after walking off the court his last night of being a Boston Celtic. Most recently where Hollywood has found inspiration featuring Jacob Wirth in "Knight and Day" and "The Company Man." Where Boston"s Big Dig was drawn on napkin... Hey when you're 130 years old see if you get everything right!

"Guess we timed our birthday outing with our 89 year old mother on the wrong night. We are not much into Trivia and we were overcome by the volume. If we were into Trivia, this would have gotten an outstanding review - this in no way reflects on the chap at the mike - he seemed to know his stuff.
We will be back, but on a non-Trivia night and will leave the 89 year old at home.
The waitress was top notch.
This seems to be a great place for German food, beer, and a step into the past."

"It was a very slow Mother's Day night before a concert at the Wilber. The service was good, and friendly. The food was actually better than I had expected--particularly the bratwurst and other speciality foods. This is never going a destination for exquisite dining--the best food is on the heavy side--but I thought it was a good place to get some tasty appetizers and affordable food before a show."

"The place and staff are great, but the food was a little dissapointing. As a German I was looking forward to this meal, but it did not taste very German, and the selection of german specialties is rather small. We were in a big group and tried different dishes, and non was really good. The best one was probably the Sauerbraten, the worst the Weisswurst, this saussage should be served with sweet mustard which it wasn't, and also it did not taste very good. The Apfelstrudel was very good though. All in all I expected much more having read the good reviews. I would say it is an american restaurant with a german touch."

"Don't go for the food or a comfy table. Go for the singalong. We were wedged into a corner. It was terribly uncomfortable and impossible to chat across the 2 round tables they put together for our party of 7. That caused some people to have their backs to others. Not ideal. The restaurant was so packed it was tough to get our server at times. The food was average bar food. Once we got that out of the way, and half our party left because they were so uncomfortable, the rest of us settled in for drinks and singing. That was fun."

"Jacob Wirth is a long standing restaurant in Boston from the 1890's with the classic features of a German Beer Hall. There is an excellent selection of beer - less so with the wine- and the food is wonderful. The small plates are really enough for dinner. It is German food so it is a bit heavy but it was really very tasty particularly the wienerschnitzel. The wait staff was really very accomodating to us as we were stuck in heavy traffic and after several phone calls letting them know how we were progressing, we finally made it. While we had given up our table due to being so late, they still found us a table and were able to quickly serve us to still make our 7:30pm show time. We are planning to return to enjoy a more leasurely meal!"

"I had a 5:00 PM reservation and arrived at 4:30, I was seated promptly in a nice table with a view. No one came to our table until I got up and asked a waiter if he could send over our server, who arrived after a 20 minute wait. We placed our order for the entire meal and a drink order. The drinks took an additional 15 minutes to arrive, the appetizers were delivered first and we did not even have a water. The drinks arrived and were wrong, a white wine was ordered and a red was delivered. another 10 minutes to get the correct drinks. By this time the meal arrived and I ordered a second beer, which did not arrive until after the meal was done. I promptly gave the waiter my credit card to charge so we could leave."

"We chose this restaurant because we like German food and the format of dinner with opera or broadway music. The quality of the food and the music should have made this a great night out. Unfortunately, there was so much noise in the room it was almost impossible to hear the excellent singers or to enjoy conversation with our dinner companions.
The food was good but not great. The quality of the veal in the schnitzels was excellent, but the breading was way too heavy. The wursts and accompanying red cabbage were excellent. The portions were uniformly large. Parking at an inexpensive ($15) lot one block away made this a very convenient destination.
Service was spotty. Three of us got our entrees together, the fourth 5 minutes late"

"Jacob Wirth is very convenient to the theater district of Boston and has an interesting atmosphere. It keeps the look of a turn of a century pub. Good place to go after a performance at the Wilbur or the Citi Performance Center. Seems to have a lively bar business. Restaurant area is not disturbed by the bar crowd. Food is average or a little better than average. Good selection for family...we had 4 adults, a 12 yr. old and an 8 yr. old in our party. There were plenty of food selections for everyone's taste. We have eaten there many times after performances."

"We came to celebrate a 90th birthday for a gentleman who was from Germany and we wanted some good German food for him. Since there were 20 of us I must say we were not the quietest group in there but we were seated in an alcove which was perfect. Everyone's food was good - except for Dietrich's (the birthday boy). I wasn't sure if he was just too overwhelmed to eat or if there was something wrong with his food so I asked to take his home. He had the Mixed Grill and the next night I tried the sausages. It was the only low point in the entire time we were there but he was right - the sausages had so much pepper or other hot spice they were not very good which was a disappointment. Our waiter was fantastic."

"Two in our party asked for double veggies hold the potatoes. Dishes came with potatoes and single serving of veggies. When the error was pointed out one plate was removed and returned (now cold) after being moved to a new plate without potatoes or the second part of the double veggies. The second person who had made the same request never bothered to have the error corrected based on the poor outcome of the first person. We won't rush back."

"I realize it was a busy Saturday night but, still, my experience here left a lot to be desired.
We were seated a round table next to the piano and that was fine until the piano player showed up and asked us to move our table so he could get into the piano. This meant that the staff bumped and jostled our table every time they tried to get to some other diners There were other, longer ways they could have reached those tables. I probably could have overlooked that if even one of them had once apologized but none of them said anything.
The potato pancakes and the special appetizer were both quite good but the rest of our food was, to me, barely edible."

"Had a fantastic experience. I'm half German, make sauerbraten at home, so am particular. Jacob Wirth's sauerbraten met the challenge; meat fork tender, red cabbage perfectly seasoned with , spaetzle. Next time, and there will be a next time, I'll order the potato pancakes as a side (will have to skip the yummy German Chocolate Whoopie Pie to make room). Our friend had the wiener snitzle which also got high praise."

"Came here for dinner after a movie at the AMC on Boston Common. It was a very convenient 5 minute walk. We had reservations for 9:30 but arrived early and they seated us right away. It was a very fun and bright atmosphere with live sing along piano music. Very upbeat and cheery place. The table were a little crowded together. The menu had a very large and interesting selection! We ordered the sauerkraut and sausage balls for an app ...delicious. I really loved the honey mustard aoili that came with it. I ordered the steak tips for dinner...these were okay... a little chewy. Maybe I should have decided on one of their specialty entrees instead. The piano guy was a lot of fun and took a range of requests... also handed out a packet of all"

"Disregard ALL reviews from ALL sources that say Jacob Wirth is authentic German food. Not so, not at all. It was actually inedible.
It's an historic pub, with a nice bar and I'm sure the wings, burgers and other pub food are excellent; however, the German food is horrible."

"I rated ambiance as good since it was a bit noisy (as it always is...nothing different) and because our table was next to the server station, which is always busy. Food was very good, as was the selection, options for different courses, beers and other libations. We were pleased to be able to use a Groupon during our visit....I liked that some of the entrees were available as apps, so you can try before you buy. Overall very good, and we'd return. Service was excellent."

"The service was wonderful and so was the food. We saw a lot of families and have decided that this will be a place to bring our daughters next time we are in Boston. They love German food, I grew up on it living in Germany for eight years, and my children and husband have learned to love it too! I highly recommend Jacob Wirth for anyone that wants a place they can take their family! This is also a great place for couples and anyone that just wants to go out for a drink and be around cool people."

"I've been there several times. I guess I'm getting tired of it. The servers are very nice but so slow. Service has typically been bad there so I was happy that this time they were at least nice. They closed at midnight on Saturday...what's with that? Really no vegetarian options on the menu."

"We always go with a group to the Friday night Singalong With Mel. It is a great experience. A lot of fun with the whole place singing together. Fantastic beer selection. Very tasty food - lots of German fare but also other more American options. Be sure to end with the Apple Strudel."
