"The ambience of the restaurant was amazing, but the quality of the food was less than to be desired. Specifically, quality issues surfaced when the food came too quickly. We would order an appetizer, salad, or main course entree, and the food would miraculously appear within 3-5 minutes. You may ask yourself-how does this happen? Or, perhaps this reviewer has it all wrong. To this end, we found out by asking our server and watching the "presentation" at the front of the restaurant, that the ribeye and hangar steaks were cooked earlier in the day, and sometimes earlier in the week. Then, the food expediter would heat up the steak in a warming oven & combine it with precooked vegetables... with the exception of the flash fired green beans."

"Grace has become a favorite dining spot for my husband and myself. And we love to take our friends and family from out of town. The church setting coud not be more gorgeous. Beyond the ambiance, the food is above the bar and the staff are terrific. We never had a disappointing experience at Grace :)"

"Unfortunately, the evening did not start well. We got there early, after making a reservation a week in advance, and asked for a table upstairs (many were empty) and were told that was not possible (they were still empty when we left). It took 10 minutes for anyone to appear to take our drink order and that was only after I got up and reminded the hostess of how long we had been sitting there. The food was okay, but not anything special and the noise level was a bit much due to the carvernous setting. Sorry. I hate writing this because I don't like complaining but... I would only recommend this restaurant with these warnings."

"Exceptionally lovely setting and service was very good. The bread and maple butter were yummy. The salad was a bit too salty. My husband and I both had fish entrees. However, the entree portions were small in size and the sidedishes were tiny, especially considering the price. My husband who is not a big guy, left hungry. I wouldl return, but only for drinks and appetizers.."

"stained glass colors at sunset. Food preparation and combinations were unusual and the flavor matches were outstanding which pleased us as we chose this restaurant over others because their menu did not include the usual items and pairings. Even our Portlander foodies were impressed. However, the entre portion size was less than expected for the price range. In my opinion, you cannot beat the ambience not the acoustics for controlling sound in such a large setting. We were seated under the balcony which contained our conversation to our table and greatly reduced general noise levels for our hearing impaired guest allowing conversation to flow freely."

"Grace was recommended to us by a friend and we did not waste anytime making reservations before coming into town. Our first night in Portland we heard to Grace and of course we fell in love with the way they converted the old space. After sitting down and lookin at the menu our mouths would not cease to salivate. Our server recommended some great starters, cheeses and entrees all of which we took. Overall the night was spectacular. I will say the only thing that confused us was the music which ranged from 90's hits to today's hits-which slightly took away from the romantic and quaint vibe but it did make us laugh"

"If I could have given six stars for service and ambiance, I would have! It was delightful. The menu was challenging and I think my sister and I (both in our mid-60s) ordered a good cross-section to get an overall sense, though we understand it changes daily. We're both from way-out-of-town so probably won't get back anytime soon, but we do highly recommend it to one and all (maybe not small children...)."

"We have been to Grace previously and really enjoyed the experience. This time was less impressive. We had arrived early for our 7pm reservation and were told that they could not seat us due to a high number of early reservations but that we could sit at the bar. The bar is not the best for eating because the chairs are too low or the bar too high depending on your point of view, in addition, we observed numerous tables for 2 that went unfilled during our whole time there suggesting that the excuse for not seating us at a regular table was a lie. We did enjoy the food we ordered and the bartender was excellent but this restaurant will not be on our list in the future. There are just too many good places in Portland."

"We throughly enjoyed our evening at Grace. The menu choices were interesting and varied we enjoyed everything we had. My dinner special was luke warm and lacked flavor (monkfish topped with braised beef ) Veal Bolognese was average. Excellent short rib appetizer. Dining room is beautiful. "My husband and I stayed at a local Inn which recommended Grace as a dining spot for us. We we very pleased with the experience. The unique decor aside (yes, you are eating in what used to be a church, complete with stain glass windows and all), both of our meals were absolutely delicious! I had the rabbit which was tender, juicy and crazy flavorful, and my husband had the black bass, which he too thought was delicious. We arrived right at 5:00 p.m. when the restaurant opened, so no crowds, no noisy clamor to contend with, and we had our waitresses undivided attention...Great! I would definitely recommend this place."

"The overall experience was excellent. The food was exceptional, service was prompt and server was very polite. The atmosphere is great for a quiet dinner date. The inside architecture definitely provides a unique dining experience. I my only critique is that if you are vegan, there is not much for selection. I would recommend this location for special occasion if you have some dispensable income."

"The ambiance and drinks were outstanding. The food left something to be desired. After shelling out $36 for two cheaply butchered lamb chops (the chine was left on so I had to hack the meat off the bone), I wish I spent the money on just drinks and appetizers. Grace is fantastic for light fare, but the entrees are so-so for the price. The hanger steak was overly marinated and still chewy, indicating that they don't care much for quality."

"Don't waste your time! The atmosphere and the service were great. If you appreciate the architecture then stop by for a drink. The food...DISAPPOINTING. I believe in quality not quantity, we got neither. The only flavor present was salt. Ridiculously small pretentious portions. I did complain about the entree specifically and the server removed it from the bill. No manager or chef followed up with us."

"Our first experience at Grace was very nice. Atmosphere was excellent and would highly recommend for a special occasion. Food was delicious; however, somewhat over-priced for comparable restaurants in the hot Portland dining venues. Desert was highly recommended and although we were too full to eat-in, we ordered the "banana cake" to take home. I have to say it was extremely disappointing, expecially for the price! An extremely small (1-1/2 inch in diameter) hard ball which seemed as though it was a day old; alon with that was a small ball of some sour cream and chocolate...defintely not worth the $8.00!"

"This was our third visit to Grace. We greatly enjoyed the food on our first two trips but were somewhat disappointed this time. The desserts were excellent but our selections were fair at best. My wife had the candy striped beet salad and she said it had very little taste. Her foie gras was not what we expected. The duck was very tasty, but it was a chore to dissect it. Still a great place to visit. The service was a little inconsistent with the server disappearing towards the end of our meal."

"We were a couple of minutes early on Valentines day, but were seated quickly. Our waitress was just right that evening. She was knowledgeable of the menu, and polite as well, but she didn't hover as my wife and I enjoyed our meal. Each course was beautifully presented, as well as loaded with flavor. I've read some reviews about Grace, which whine about portions being small, or there being no vegetables with some Entree's. Unfortunately for those that feel this way, this isn't Applebee's. This is a special occasion restaurant. Someplace you go if you want to impress, or if you're just looking for something out of the ordinary. If you order each course, you should not be hungry when you leave. Neither should the bill be astronomical."
