"We ordered the 10 course tasting menu. The first course Egg Caviar was the best. The next 4 courses were very good. Then the dishes fell short of my expectations. #6. Wild Stiped Bass was bland and had some muscle like consistancy, The next 4 courses were only ok except for the Coconut Merinque # 10 which was a refresing finish to the meal.
The presentaion was excellent.
The staff for the most part were attentive and explained the courses well and how to eat them. For the money, I felt we could have done better overall."

"I dined on the "10" menu.
Course after course became more like dinner theatre rather than an intimate experience where the staff and the chef actually cared about the diners. There was an attitude of "look how great our restaurant is!" throughout the meal. The staff was extremely well trained and attentive, but they orchestrated a performance rather than a genuine dining experience. The chef seemed to be overly involved in trying to make innovative dishes, with cutting edge techniques rather than concentrating on flavor and showcasing the quality of his ingredients. I truly think, even if zero customers showed up one evening, the show would go on without waitstaff or kitchen noticing. It's good, but at this price point I should feel special"

"Food service was slower than previous experienced. Wine pairing was excellent & extra glass of wine was given because the food was so slow to arrive between the 1st & 2nd courses (approximately 40 minutes). Great use of local foods fresh from the market. Enjoyed unique foods that are unusual to find in restaurants & learn new flavors & taste."

"For all the accolades and stars this restaurant and chef have received I expected more. Perhaps I had too high of expectations but I didn't have a single bite that I haven't had in other restaurants and at lower cost. Everything was good but nothing blew me away and for the price it's just not worth it. Suffice it to say our favorite bites were the amuse and the cookies and other sweets that came complimentary at the end of the meal, certainly not the middle of the meal. Again, this is really good food but for the price it's not good enough."

"An effort was made to impress, with a price tag to suit, but I was underwhelmed. Four courses ran $125-$185 each. There was a $60 surcharge for wagyu beef entree for about 2.5 oz portion. Ridiculous! There was no surcharge for the flat iron steak, slightly larger portion, and it was better tasting! The sommelier was somewhat helpful, but in the end confusing and not that satisfying. We asked for a simple flight of wines pairing by the glass for all four courses, but instead were presented with the unnecessary conundrum of whether to just order two half bottles of "better wines" which they wouldn't pour by the glass, even thought the specialize in prix fixe menus with flat rate pairing offers for all the courses. Not going back at this price"

"Overrated place, the food is good but not great so why this shows up on all list in LA as one of the top restaurants I don't get.
Service was below standard for such a place, our waitress was more interested in the table next to us than in ours leading to empty wine glasses, 10 min before water was poured, and the last curse was just put on our table with a minimal explanatioon by the server.
There must be much beter places in LA so avoid this one and go to a place that knows it is 2013 and not 2003."

"Great food, great service and great ambiance. What more could you ask for? The staff was attentive and graciously catered to every request.
I walked into Melisse with my girlfriend and walked out with my fiancee. James (Maitre d') was integral to the process and his execution was flawless.

"We had a lovely evening for our Anniversary here at Melissse. We were greeted with a card on our table that acknowledged our Anniversay along with a boxes of truffles, very nice touch. Our wait staff and servers were excellent, very knowledgeable and very attentive. We tried the 10 course meal and we enjoyed almost everyone of them. There were a couple that were just good but not great to our taste. We thoroughly enjoyed the attention to detail in serves, plating and taste. This made our Anniversary so very special, we have been wanting to try Melisse for a while and glad we did it on a special occasion. We will definitely return again. Would recommend this place others."

"Melisse is the best restaurant in Southern California and deserves its Michelin stars and high Zagat ratings. We enjoyed the "rib eye" supplementthe price fix menu, a small plate morsel of the most delicious beef one could ever enjoy. The fish and dessert courses were wonderful, and we were impressed that we were offered fresh Dutch White Asparagras in a memorable preparation. April is season for white Asparagras in Europe, we have enjoyed it in Berlin, and were transported by Melisse both understanding and offering this delicacy and the wonderful presentation. We brought a bottle of very fine wine with us and noted after arriving it was actually also on their menu. However, it was not an issue with Melisse and we paid only corkage"

"Melisse is a an excellent culinary experience. The food and service is impeccable. Menu items are inventive, thoughtful and precisely executed. The service is equally uncomparable. Lauren, our "culinary liasion", conveyed great attention to detail and service and was hands down the best.
The ONLY reason I gave this an overall 4 stars because it is an unique dining experience and too formal for my taste. Dinner took over 3 and half hours largely because of the multiple courses. It is an unique experience and too esoteric of an dining night out to repeat over and over again. I would give it a 4.5 stars out 5 but cannot under the existing rating criteria."

"This evening didn't go well, and we've had many lovely evenings at Melisse since it opened. Our reservation was at 7, and after 9 I had to go looking for our third (main) course. We skipped dessert as we had early commitments the next day. Apologies heard around the room during the evening were: "It's Saturday night, things are always a bit slow" which for a top line restaurant like Melisse doesn't cut it. The restaurant offered to comp our dinner; we declined and paid half, tipping on the whole, as we thought a free dinner with no tips for staff was too extreme a penalty. We love the restaurant, owner, sommelier, and the food we were served was spectacular, but we will be a while going back and it definitely won't be a Saturday night"

"The room is underwhelming; perhaps it is cheerier earlier in the day. There were several amuse bouches and each one was delicious and interesing. I ordered the 4 course menu and substituted something from the truffle menu for one course. I was pleased to see a good selection of half bottles of wine and the sommelier helped me make an excellent selection. The meal was okay, but not thrilling.
As a side note, there was an infant at one table and a toddler at another. They were reasonably well behaved but at these prices I don't expect to have to endure crying infants or whiny toddlers during dinner."

"We celebrated our 35th anniversary at Melisse and had the 10 course tasting menu. HThe food was excellent and the service was great throughout the dinner. Tables are nicely spaced so you never feel crowded. Well worth the price and highly recommended. Loren was terrific overseeing the service and Brian, the sommelier, chose two wines that were very reasonably priced and matched the food perfectly."

"Celebrated my husband's 65th birthday with the 10-course dinner with wine pairings. It was a special meal for a special occasion. Among the most expensive meals we've ever had, but well worth it. Some of the courses were foods I wouldn't have ordered by myself, but amazingly I liked everything."

"Food was very good. We chose the 10 course meal and a very nice bottle of wine. It did take about 3 hours to work through the dinner but that was enough time to allow the wine to open and pair nicely with the various courses. We were full but not stuffed. Wait staff were attentive and prompt. It's a formal atmosphere and perhaps a little stuffy. In my opinion, no meal is worth $700, but it's more about the experience than the food. It is definitely a place that people go to celebrate birthdays. There were at least 10 birthday tables that night."

"Not impressed by the service, took over 3 hours to eat a 4 course menu, food was good but having to wait 45 min for each course was a bit much for me.
Overall service was not great, the main waiter was pretty snob, plus he left in the middle of servuce wo notice, not what you expect when you are spending over 500dols for dinner of 2. I had to ask 2 times for someone to come and explain us the menu. they just memorize what they need to say but do not make a consient effort to provide a good explanation, I thought the ordering system was a bit complex and should be improved."

"Standard "foodie" fare. Everything was quite good, but most of the dishes were left out in the kitchen for too long before being served - should have been "piping hot" rather than luke warm. More reminiscent of the dining experience on a high end cruise (ala Regent or Seabourn)rather than an intimate fine dining establishment. The three of us dining all shared courses, and all were tepid rather than nice and hot as one would expect. A little dissappointing given the price tag - $675 for a party of three (not including alcohol or gratuity). However, the ingredients were clearly fresh and the presentation excellent. Our waiter (I'm sorry his name escapes me) was absolutely incredible - an asset to the establishment. Treated like celebs!"

"Very solid food quality, if a tad uninspired. Lackluster service. Hostesses/wait staff seemed bored and distracted, texting and chit-chatting amongst themselves. Service wise felt like a visit to the Cheesecake Factory. Overall decent, but mostly underwhelming."

"I was looking for something unique and special to celebrate Valentine's with my wife and Melisse didn't let us down. We live in San Diego and we went all the way down to Santa Monica to try this place, let me tell you food was amazing but the service was superb! The sommelier did an outstanding job recommending us the wine, he asked us what we were looking for by doing some precise questions and he exactly gave us what we were expecting. Black truffle capellini with lobster was so good that the only thing I can say about this place is that the big check was definitely worth it."

"It was an amazing wonderful dinner!! I had saved up and planed to go to Melisse in advance for a special occasion in which me and my significant other celebrated. It wasn't officially on the same date of the anniversary but close enough and clearly the 3 day waiting period from Tuesday to Friday was very made up for by having dinner at Melisse. Such a wonderful establishment and I really liked the fact that no cell phone usage was allowed. I seriously think that a lot more fine dining resturaunts should enforce this rule! But will definitely be coming back to Melisse."

"Our meal was a splendid fine dining experience. The 10 course tasting menu with wine pairing was marvelous - each course was a culinary delight and the wines were impeccably matched with the food. The service was top-notch, polished yet also relaxed and gracious. It was a definite reminder that Melisse is a real treasure for those who seek out fine dining in L.A."

"This is was second time there and as the first time everything was fabulous. The only reason I gave a 4 star rating instead of 5 is that the 4 course meal took almost 4 hours. It is understandable for the 10 course meal that we had the time before but this time is was just to long."
