The Cellar - Fullerton CA
In 1969, artistic craftsmen of Disneyland fame created a romantic rendezvous in the cellar of the old California Hotel. The Cellar is the perfect setting for an intimate and romantic evening of fine dining. Patrons will find themselves enjoying fine French cuisine while comfortably seated in soft velvet-backed chairs upholstered in rich mellow leather and surrounded by a dimly lit interior. Intimate and cozy, the four dining rooms are elegant amid structured arches and cave-like walls, decorated with wine casks and silver lanterns. Culinary excellence abounds with only the finest and freshest foods prepared in a lighter version of classical French cuisine. The Cellar, winner of The Wine Spectator Grand Award, was selected in 1992 as one of the top six restaurants in the world for its outstanding wine list which currently features over 1300 selections from around the world. The Cellar is One of America's 10 Best French Restaurants, and Restaurant of the Year for 2005.

"I get up to Fullerton once a year for the Muckenthaler car show. I make it a point to dine at The Cellar.I love that it's cozy and comfortable. The ambience is that of an old French wine cellar. The service is impeccable and I've never had an entree I didn't love. I'll be back in 2014 if not before."

"We had a great filet mignon and scallop speacial. It was delicious and I would highly recommend it. However, the menu only had about 10 choices almost all including beef ( 2 or 3 steak options and 2 or options with beef short ribs). They also had a pork dish and a couple fish options. I was stunned not to see a single chicken option. If you enjoy beef (I do) I would highly recommend.
The salads and desserts were very nice too."

"Went here for our wedding anniversary. Initially had a drink at the bar while waiting for our table, nice selection of cocktails, beer and of course wine. After we were seated, we had to ask a server to find our server. I expected much better for the prices. The other wait staff and the wine steward were much better. When the food arrived it was presented well, but the flavor was underwhelming. Finally, the table location was in a high traffic area and situated directly under some spot lights which made is feel as if we were on a stage, this was despite the fact that we indicated we were celebrating an anniversary and requested a quiet table out of the way when we made the reservation! It was anything but!! Would not recommend."

"As always the food was delicious, high quality, and so fresh. The atmosphere is very special and the service is excellent. The price was amazing for such an elegant experience. This is one of our favorite restaurants and they have awesome events. I highly recommend The Cellar for any dining occasion, not just special events."

"Son ordered diet coke, waiter brought him regular. When told his drink was a regular and not diet, waiter said 'I will take care of it,' without apologizing. Ordered medium rare rib eye steak, but got a medium instead and was tough! Wanted to ask for a steak knife and kept waving at waiters, no one paid attention, steak got cold. Finally got someone's attention, waiter said I should have brought own chopsticks! Chocolate souffle was burned at the top, had plastic or something in it. Talked to manager and owner, they apologized, said the foreign matter was hardened egg white. Oh and guess what?? Owner made us pay for it too!! NEVER AGAIN!!! DO NOT EXPECT MUCH FROM THIS RESTAURANT."

"The moment we stepped down into the dark, dank and vaguely musty Cellar, I knew I should have rethought our plan for a celebratory dinner in a place called "The Cellar". There were service snafus, like when a mute waiter came to serve us bread, and left out our guest of honor- our MOM. Or when they tried to cram 7 of us into a booth for 5. Worst was when they brought out the chateaubriand, which is advertised as being carved tableside, already precarved and overdone on plates. Menu is old-fashioned, uninspired, and inconsistently executed- chef was heavy-handed with cognac on lobster bisque, lukewarm greasy onion soup, overcooked fish/steaks, eggy heavy souffles. Wouldn't recommend for foodies, but location may have nostalgic charm for some"

"You have to really watch for signs once in the building so you don't miss the small stairwell going down to the restaurant.
Service was good but a little slow.
Wine list was extensive and excellent.

"The Cellar has been acquired by a new proprietor and I will tell you, THIS PLACE ROCKS. Their menu has something for everyone. If you like Chateaubriand, you will love their cut (the great thing is you can actually order it for One or Two) which is brought out table side and carved. No short servings and cooked to perfection. Best Short ribs and Lobster Bisque I have ever eaten, period. Wonderful place for romantic dinner or a casual meal. No dress code but you won't want to wear hobo attire, casually elegant +. Outstanding meal and service, wonderful ambiance. AND they have a $25 PER PERSON price fix menu for May that is off the hook. You will love The Cellar"

"Came here to celebrate an anniversary. I started with the French Onion soup which was flavorful. My wife had the Lobster Bisque (award winning) who says she expected more lobster flavor and bits of lobster in it. I then had the braised short ribs which was again very flavorful but the portion size left me wanting. Fortunately my wife ordered the special surf and turf which was a thick chunk of filet with 3 giant scallops and she generously shared. The chocolate soufflé was spot on.
I do want to make a note about our service. It may be specific to our waiter, but we were not offered bread, and there was no mention of the special tasting menu. He was slow, only came by every 20 minutes, and made some awful coffee."

"I rarely make a fuss about service but once we were seated, no one came to the table at all. After 20 minutes I had to go find a waiter who brought us a list of wines by the bottle and then disappeared. 10 minutes later I went to find someone again and had to follow someone to the kitchen. 30 minutes after we arrived we were finally able to place a drink order, get some bread, some menus and some water, all of which we had to request and I had to seek someone out to get. It was an hour before we got any food, other than bread. The meal, was delicious once we got it. We've gone there every year for a special occasion Birthday but won't be returning. There are many choices for dining."

"I would recommend this place if you have a lot of time to burn and being ignored won't put a damper to your evening. The service was horrendous here but their food and ambiance of the place made up for it. At least enough for me to come back and give them another chance.
It was weird, it was like everyone actively ignored us, no one looked to our corner or asked us how we were doing. We were there so long that our candle actually burnt out."

"We were really looking forward to our celebration at the cellar, but were all very disappointed. We all left feeling that the service was terrible, food came out at random times (for instance, we ordered coffee with dessert and the coffee arrived long after we were finished with dessert.) our primary waitor was quite rude and seemed to take offense at any questions, and the food was mediocre, at best. The bread was quite good and the drinks were also good, but a big thumbs down for everything else!"

"The Cellar was excellent as usual. The short ribs were so tender I didn't use a knife at all and the truffled Mac n Cheese was superb. THe service was excellent. We had a drink at the bar afterwards - I don't think they are really set up for that. A very small, cozy, quiet atmosphere."

"Nice place but food was just ok, and for the price it was so not worth the money. Service was slow....Had to get up twice to get the waiter for service.. He only came over at the end of our meal.. NEVER checked on us once.... Will not be coming back..."

"Fantastic setting designed by the guy that created the Pirates of the Caribbean ride. Mysterious location makes for a romantic adventure. The food & service was top notch. Presentation was excellent. We sat in the smaller dining area near the bar. The intimate space does allow for you to overhear conversations at the next table, but that's only bad if the conversation is pure drivel, which in our case, was a bit distracting. But that's not the restaurants fault. If you are seeking privacy, you'll need to request one of the booths in the back. We will definitely return fot that experience."

"I remember going to the Cellar restaurant in the late 70's and am amazed it is still around. There were just four of us for dinner on a Friday night at 5pm. There were very few people in the restaurant. We were very disappointed that the service was so poor when there were hardly any people in the restaurant. We had asked for water and hadto ask again. We asked for plan iced tea and flavored tea was brought to our table. I was disappointed that we had to ask for so many of the normal service that are generally taken care of. The menu has changed since my visit in the '70s where they made a Ceasar Salad fresh at your table! Food was okay."

"Based on a large number of good reviews and the restaurant’s own web site I felt that The Cellar was a good choice for a family celebration. Unfortunately our experience did not live up to expectations. An evening out at a restaurant is made up of a number of factors. The Cellar fell short in a number of areas and our evening was disappointing. Service was slow and irregular and some dishes were not served as ordered.
I do hope that other reviewers who gave The Cellar 5 star reviews had better experiences than we did. If not, their reviews are meaningless. In any event, I will not be back. I don’t wish to make the same expensive mistake twice."

"The Cellar was a terrific special occasion restaurant with a lovely atmosphere and terrific, attentive service (Manny was our delightful waiter). The food was edible, but nothing to write home about. We were there on a Sunday and they were out of some things (like chocolate souffle, which left us with no chocolate options). The price point was a bit steep for the food quality. But overall, a decent experience and the unique atmosphere is a bucket list item."

"A most wonderful dining experience. Speakeasy atmosphere, professional and attentive wait staff and amazing food. Business casual dress requested but the pace is relaxed and unhurried. We had plenty of time to enjoy each course. The manager was personable and professional. To complement the outstanding food there is a very nice wine selection. We will be back."

"The decor is in need of an update, my booth seat had a whole, and the lighting was too dark. Several of the menu items were unavailable. My steak was over cooked, but I did not send it back because it took too long for our food to come to the table. My husband was surprised to see the hostess wearing denim jeans at a restaurant that has a dress code posted on the website. Overall, we were disappointed because our experience did not meet the expectation or match the cost of the service and food."
