Onyx is a fresh and innovative twist on a classic Steakhouse that is now OPEN FOR BRUNCH AND DINNER, a place where familiar favorites are re-spun by one of Greater Vancouver's newest Executive Chefs Luke Exelby. We are devoted to cuisine and wine and we show it off by providing an extensive Wine List and serving top cuts of meat that we dry-age ourselves, in-house. "We went to Onyx to celebrate our anniversary and had a fabulous meal. The restaurant was a little quiet that night but that made it even better for our romantic dinner. Our waiter was excellent and made some great suggestions. We had our steaks done "Chicago" style and they were delicious. From the appies to the desserts we were thoroughly impressed. We will definitely go back again.."

"The dining room has "mood lighting"; just barely enough light with candles on the table to supplement. Noise level was not overwhelming.
Water arrived as soon as the last person arrived. Our server (Hi Mischa!) promptly took drink orders, asked if we have been there before, then explained how the menu worked. Drinks arrived in less than 5 mins.
The roasted beet salad was lovely, dressing was light and tasty. All agreed: side dishes were terrific; green beans crisp, mushrooms tasty, brussels sprouts were surprisingly sweet. We were a bit disappointed with the mains though, remove all the sauce and there's barely any taste to pork ribs, steak or chicken. Perhaps they need to learn how to marinade?
Go for the side dishes!"

"Having driven by Onyx a few times, I expected your typical mini-mall steakhouse. I expected a Cactus Club rip-off with appies from Costco's freezer and steaks that tasted like they came from there too.
However, I was wrong, and I am not afraid to admit that I was wrong. Onyx demonstrated what I like to call door-to-door service, meaning that from the time I came in the door to the time I left by it, I was treated with respect, consideration, and the care given to a valued customer. The food was spectacular. The prime rib was tender, flavourful, and perfectly cooked. The server was amiable, knew the menu well, and had the right mix of spending time at the table and attending to our order.
Overall, I would highly recommend Onyx steakhouse."

"Tried Onyx Steakhouse and Lounge as an alternative to the Keg and is was great. Beef quality was second to none and everything was cooked perfectly. There was a little bit of noise from the lounge side but there was a Canucks game on and it really only added to the atmosphere. Very nice decor and comfy seating. We will definitely be back."

"Onyx has a lot of amazing items on their menu. Highlights include tempura bacon, steak tartare, creamed corn, the petit filet. My steak was cooked perfectly, it was a nice quiet romantic meal and we enjoyed everything we ordered. The only thing I wouldn't suggest is the thick cut fries. I like a thinner fry and thought they were only alright. Great drink selection. Loved the pink lemonade with rum! Would highly recommend this restaraunt."

"We have been to Onyx before but found this dinner lacking at best. The service was fair (just) and we were left waiting on multiple occassions for water, food or the bill. If the restaurant was busy I would have been more sympathetic however it was almost empty.
We were a group of five and we were seated at a small table for four with a chair at the end despite our statements that it was a tight fit. Servers were removing glasses and bread plates in order to place our meals at the table. There were not enough room to accomodate the menus - given that the entire upstairs was closed and they were well below capacity I couldn't understand it. our meals were hit and miss given the price I would expect much much more."

"We had a delay between the appetizer and the main course. They offered us a desert for the small delay to make up for it. The lamb was cooked perfectly and tender as can be! The chocolate cake is huge and amazing! We will definitely return."

"waited for 75 minutes for our meal...we were a party of 4 ...two other tables of two that ordered after us got their meals before us...we were told that they delay was due to a larger party getting their meals (appox 10 ppl)...the server was very inexperienced...they didn't have caffeine free tea...or vanilla ice cream for their banana split dessert...they did give us two complimentary desserts...one of which tasted dry and stale...I would've been peeved had I paid for the dessert. I'd never go back."

"It was a relatively quiet night at the restaurant, so we received exceptional service and attention. First and foremost, the steak was superb. I had a Chicago style, medium rare New York Strip (aged 45 days) done to perfection. My wife had a petite filet mignon, again done to perfection. The sides are also worthy of attention. We had the truffle lobster mac and cheese, highly... highly recommended, sauteed vegetables and sauteed mushrooms. They were delicious; nice sized portions and prepared perfectly.
The wine list is great. Substantial with a good variety of wines from all major wine regions, including BC.
My wife and I had a truly wonderful experience. We will go again."

"We arrived at 8 from a rescheduled reservation for 7:30- after waiting at the reception for about 6 or 7 minutes with nobody else there but my girlfriend and I, our server finally came over to seat us. Now the restaurants decor is incredibly stylish, the ambiance of the place was one of the best parts of the experience. To start we ordered some salt and vinegar chips and poutine. While the poutine portions were quite small, it was very good. The first fault was with the chips. All vinegar, no salt. They swapped it for some tasty Chicken Spring Rolls and the night rolled on. Average food, not completely worth the price tag- but the drinks were incredible. The wait staff and kitchen staff were also very loud during our meal."

"We celebrated Valentine's Day on our 1st visit to Onyx. Overall, we enjoyed ourselves very much. The calamari and prime rib special were very good and generous portions. I liked the Thai Prawn Curry as well. No room for dessert. Service a tiny bit slow but that is to be expected on Valentine's Day. However, we were impressed at the end when our server disclosed it was his first dinner service after training! Staff pleasant and professional. Diverse crowd: couples, friends/groups, and a few families with kids. The place had a casual, elegant feel; fine for special occasion or last-minute bite. Nice to have a more upscale restaurant in Port Moody, we will return."

"The service was slow and spotty; whenever food arrived, servers didn't know which guest had ordered which dish. Servers were friendly and tried to please, but seemed inexperienced. Excellent steak and side dishes but prices fairly high for this suburban location. Offered only one salad dressing---my husband ordered ranch and I ordered blue cheese. "Our experience was overall disappointing. After moving tables, we were first seated by the front door, I thought we would have a better table seeing as we had a reservation. The wine I selected was sold by the glass, but later was told it could only be served by the bottle. Fine but don't state otherwise. My salad was over dressed, the onion rings were greasy and flavourless. The sliders were the hit of the night, best I've had. My husbands tomato salad was bland, and his entrée arrived at the same time. He had to send his prime rib back. Everything in my meal arrived at the same time, so I was finished just as my husband started, not great!!! I also tried an apple dessert that, should have just skipped."

"Excellent food, well prepared and promply served! The staff were very friendly and helpful although our server was clearly less experienced. He did make up for much with friendly enthusiasm. A very nice dining experience!"

"We were placed by the table at the door and it was very cold, so they were able to move us after asking. Then the overall atmosphere was not as comfortable as so,me other fine dining restaurants we've been to, so on a scale of other comparable restaurants this one is certainly not at the top of our list. We wish it was as we had good expectations."

"Having patronised this establishment many times, I have yet to be disappointed. The food is consistently great, I recommend that one request the Gorgonzola Macaroni and Cheese as a side dish. Although no longer on the menu, the chef always prepares it for us.
On occasion, this one included, we have experienced a training situation with a new employee, however the management has always been quick to address any issues.
Good for small groups on the lower level. Avoid front tables near the doorway in the winter, as it always seems colder than the remainder of the restaurant. There is an upper level, though I have yet to experience this section.

"I'm very fortunate to have traveled and eaten at some great restaurants so I'm a little spoiled in that sense, but for a local neighbourhood joint the food is good. The service has to be better if they want to pass themselves off as a high end restaurant. Especially for the price they charge. The prices aren't crazy expensive but as I said, they are trying to present themselves as a high"er" end place so they have to step it up.
We had terrible service, the waiter seemed very inexperienced which is fine but then he should have been backed up by a more experienced person until he got up to speed. We've talked with other friends who have gone here and compared notes.

"We cannot wait to go back again! We enjoyed the bone in rib steak and Filet Mignon which according to our server (Meecha) were over 45 days of age and were the best steaks we have ever had! We also enjoyed the Lobster Mac and cheese and mushrooms. Drinks and wine were reasonable priced although I noticed that if you like really nice wine they have that too. On our next visit we are going to do appies in the lounge as it seemed like a very hip place to hang out. All in all excellent THANK YOU ONYX!"

"Wow! Not what we were expecting at all. The food was outstanding and very reasonably priced for the quality. Think Gotham but a lot less expensive. Their menu has both a la carte options and entree's that come with sides so if a la carte is not your thing there are options for you. Service was great and their new manager Dave was warm and friendly. We will definately return often. Not just for special occasions."

However, this time the kitchen wasn't on top of their game, and they weren't catching errors before the table.
Both my wife's lamb and my steak were overcooked by some margin. The manager swooped in and had them redone. However, the new plates came without our sauce selections, and by the time that got corrected my wife's lamb was getting cold.
The manager did comp our night out, and was gracious at acknowledging the errors. This remains the best steakhouse in the Tri-cities, and we will be back. They had an off-night, though, and it was frustrating that they weren't getting caught before the table as they were obvious errors."

"While the food was reasonable, the service was poor, not what I was expecting for the price. When we arrived no one greeted us at the door, and we had to catch the eye of the wait staff after standing like a lemon waiting to be seated. Our reserved table was not quite ready and we were asked to wait at the bar, which was fine, except that we were ignored by the bar staff and passing servers for over 15 minutes. Again we had to flag down a staff member to even get a wine list, let alone order a drink. Once seated things improved, however the front door kept being left open, which was extremely drafty, on numerous occasions patrons sat near to the door including myslef had to close the door ourselves."

"Food was Great! Our server took our order and then her shift ended, our new server had no idea what we ordered, hence we waited 45 minutes to receive cheese bread. Server communication is even displayed at Red Robin......... My order showed up to the table wrong, I was missing something that I had been charged for and had "sauce" on my plate that I didn`t order. When I received my bill the "sauce"that I didn`t order, had been billed $2.00, however the manager comped my $3.35 Coke...... Overall it was not worth what I paid, and we will not return again."
