What does creative casual cuisine mean? Exactly what it says. We"re creative, because we reject the same-old-same-old in favor of tastes that are interesting and unique. We're casual because while our food may be worth getting dressed up for, we invite you to come as you are. We're all about cuisine in the sense that our chefs apply high standards of culinary art. There it is. Creative. Casual. Cuisine. If it sounds like your kind of place, then you – like us- are not your average Joe.
"Not Your Average Joe's is better than average. They try hard to please and, if anything, are over-solicitous (a good thing, here). This applies to the service as well as the food and its presentation."

"Alway consistently good food and service. Only challenge is finding a place to wait during busy times. Bar area small and anywhere you stand other than outside you're in the way."

"We have been to a number of Not Your Average Joe's restaurants and loved them but this restaurant is worn at the edges - and our server was pretty bad. We had to wait over 40 min just for a salad and sandwiches - on a Sunday - staff was very friendly but our waiter seemed to disappear. We had to ask where is our food and he said "it's coming but the kitchen is swamped" - which was not true because people at other tables seated after us were served well before we were. Of particular concern is the terrible state of the facility and rest room. They really need to inspect and renovate this facility - totally not at all like the other ones we have dined at. So try other restaurants in this pretty town!!"

"My wife and I are frequent diners here, and we often bring friends and family. Everyone loves this place. The bread and dipping sauce alone could be a meal. The location is perfect, and with the weather getting warmer, outdoor seating will be back with water views. Perfect place for any occasion."

"Had the salmon - it was perfect! Came with asparagus although it was a little under cooked. I happen to like it a little on the softer side. The rice was good also and of course the breads. Everyone else in our group loved their meals also."

"Had my birthday dinner there---got a free entree and dessert as I'm on their mailing list. I am gluten free, so chose from their separate gluten free menu. Had fabulous broiled scallops on a rosemary stick, over sweet potatoes with a little bacon mixed in. Yummy! My family thoroughly enjoyed their meals also. We split a bottle of wine on their special $20 bottle list and it was great. Highly recommended--even if its too cold to sit outside."

"We had to wait about 20 minutes beyond the time for our reservation. While we got a complimentary appetizer, it was still hard because there was no place to sit and wait."

"Had a great view of the harbor. Pleasant window spot and nice wait staff.
Unfortunately, we had about a 35 minute wait for a window seat despite having made a reservation a week in advance "for a window seat." Our hostess was gracious, but I wish they would indicate that reservations are no guarantee that you will be seated on time. It was a 50th birthday, so I was a bit embarrassed about the wait.
Food scrumptious!!!! - Thanks"

"Great service. The butternut squash manicotti with cranberry sauce was very sweet - like dinner & dessert all-in-one... The music was a bit loud for easy conversation but fun. The chocolate lava cake was to die for!"

"We had lunch on a Sunday - excellent food - I had onion soup & a waldorf side salad and my husband had a pizza. The 2 others with us had soup. We all LOVED the bread and dip. We could have had more but never tried asking. Service was excellent. Only criticism is that if you aren't familiar with Newburyport and its layout, don't rely on Google maps - when putting in the address (1 Market Square, Firehouse Center, Newburyport, MA, Google interprets that to be 1 Market Street - which is not even near the actual location. Furthermore, when I called the restaurant, the person that answered didn't understand that either and sent me on a wild goose chase. Restaurant is right at the intersection of Merrimac & State streets."

"NYAJ is always a great spot for fantastic food and drinks. It's a local hotspot in my neighborhood, so we go there frequently. Reservations are recommended, there always seems to be a wait for tables...a testament to their popularity! The staff is friendly and knowledgeable, and their complimentary appetizer of fresh bread with dipping oil is a definite yes. So good! I had the ahi wonton appetizer and also the ahi tuna salad...both very good. The wontons are SO delicious. We also had the Thai mussels which were amazing too. I am always happy with their food, and their drinks are inventive and always tste like another!"

"Generally we enjoy 'Not Your Average Joe's and have especially found consistency with the one in the Norwell. Not so in Newburyport...the service was somewhat slow and the food was warm, not as hot as it should be. Saying that, I will chalk it up to a bad day and will revisit. The menu is unique and one can't get some of their choices at other restaurants."

"NYAJ's in Newburyport is a great place for an evening meal, especially in the warmer months when one can sit at one of the outside tables. There are two choices for outdoor dining: One area is in front, facing the busy Newburyport shopping district. If you enjoy people-watching, this is ideal. The other area is in back, facing out over a park area to the Newburyport harbor. Some people watching (dog walkers, Frisbee players, etc.)combined with a few of the waterfront, with boats, makes this a pleasant dine in good weather (it has an awning)."

"We love NYAJ Newburyport - great service and outstanding management who always make sure you're all set. Managers frequently remember us as regulars or stop by the table to see if all is well. When something isn't right, they make it right. We are always grateful for the ease which with that happens. We feel valued as patrons. The personal touch really means a lot."

"we showed up for 6:15 reservations and was greeted by an overwhelmed hostess who said people were not leaving their tables quickly enough. Consequently, things were backed up. That being said, we were seated only about 10 minutes late. From that point on however, we felt more than a lttle rushed. Our entrees were set down on the table before we were even halfway through our appetizers.
I've eaten at other Not Your Average Joe's and have enjoyed the ffod and the ambience. The food here was just "OK". The calamari arived cold and not very crisp. I had the ahi tuna salad which was unfortuantely soaked in dressing. It ruined the flavor of the tuna.
Oh, well...."

"I had a reservation for 6pm, but it was very busy and I had to wait. At about 6:25p the hostess called for a couple who had come in after I did, also with a 6pm reservation. I said something to her about having checked in at least 5 minutes before they did, and she did get me seated right after that. The waiting space for the table was extremely crowded...we were practically stepping on each others toes. People with reservations for 6:15 and 6:30 came in while I was still waiting, as well as others who were trying to get tables, who had not made reservations."

"Great menu choices, food, atmosphere & service. There were 4 of us & we had a very tippy table. The manager himself came over and took care of it immediately. The bread and dipping oil that is brought to the table first is out of this world....we could have had just that and been very happy. Nice presentation, outdoor eating in the summer, and a great view of the water. A favorite of ours......and the "Peanut Butter Thing" is extraordinary!!!!"

"My daughter was in a play at the Firehouse which is located above the restaurant the night we went , and it was my son's 15th birthday. Made reservations online, so easy, for a time I between shows so my daughter could come down and join us for a bit. The food was great! We all had a very good meal and enjoyed ourselves."

"We are always pleased with the food, and during the summer, the outside seating, both front and back is really good. The wait staff generally is very friendly, and sometimes is knowledgeable. This time, everything we ordered was "awesome". It was good but I'm not sure about the "awesome""

"NYA Joe's in Newburyport was very kind to let me make a reservation for 10:00 pm even though they close at 10! We had done a show in the Theater upstairs and wanted a quick cocktail and snack for my husband's b-day. NYAJ's was very accomodating and our waitress was lovely and patient. Love those pomegranite martiniis!!"

"We has a fabulous evening of dining at NYAJ's in Newburyport, followed by seeing a show at the Firehouse Center (all in one building- great to enjoy an excellent meal, and then just walk upstairs to the theatre!!). Our meals were well-prepared, and delicious. My husband's Cobb Salad Entree was abundant with an assortment of veggies, grilled chicken, egs, avacado and bacon. My Mediterranean Chicken was very tasty, with a nice Tzaki sauce, and sides of Greek style salad and rice. I appreciated the gluten free menu, and gluten free bread, as it assured me that your restaurant and staff are skilled and knowledgable regarding handling food allergies. All in all, it was a wonderful evening. Thank you!!"
