"We really loved this restaurant. This was our second trip and on both occasions we were surprised by how good the food was, and how it wasn't as crowded as it should have been given the quality of the service, drinks, and the food. It's a little hidden from the main strip since it is on Shab Row, and not on Market Street, which might explain why it wasn't totally packed when we left at 10PM on a Friday night, as it should have been, IMHO.
This has to be our new favorite restaurant in Frederick. We expect to become semi-regulars."

"We stopped by and had a fantastic dinner. Nice wine tasting and settled on a lovely bottle for dinner. We shared a salad and best of all the Calamari appetizer which was awesome, tasty and different. We will be back again when we head that way."

"This restaurant was a lucky find through OpenTable. This was our first trip to Frederick and we weren't sure where the restaurant was located so we decided to find it early in the day - Bonus- we had lunch there as well. Sweet Potato Soup and White Meatloaf were memorable - couldn't wait to go back for dinner! Dinner was even more awesome. The escargot, something I order whenever available, was the most unusual and best I have ever had. The Lamb Strip Loin was delicious. Everything we had was perfect and the wait staff were attentive and helpful - offering great wine suggestions. This will be my go to place whenever we are in the area!"

"We tried this restaurant for the first time on Sunday. It was really very nice. Open, airy inside; really nice people working there too. Since it was Sunday we ordered from the Brunch menu and the food was very good. We would certainly go back again."

"Shab Row always has a nice menu, small but varied enough that there is something for everyone. Of course it has a great wine selection and some interesting cocktails. I had the wahoo special that was perfectly cook, nice and meaty and the brown butter sauce did not overpower the fish but complimented it. A guest had the scallops, which she always gets but they are consistently perfectly cooked with a nice sear. The other two had the 17 oz steak and thoroughly enjoyed it. As always, my only critique is that the noise level can be a bit loud at times due to the hardwood floors and exposed brick. But other than that, it is always an enjoyable meal."

"We enjoyed a wonderful dinner and bottle of Sancerre at this great little restaurant. The scenic view is not great, but the ambiance inside is very nice, the service friendly, and the food excellent. I had the scallops and my husband had the trout. Especially nice was the unique Caesar salad. It was a good choice and we will visit again."

"Shab Row in Frederick, MD as a whole is artsy and feels very bohemian, and yet classic. Shab Row Bistro & Wine Bar fits perfectly with the beautiful china, the well done, thoughtful, and freshly prepared food, rich french pressed coffee, fresh hot mini scones to begin, and excellent, polite service. We came for Mother's Day brunch, with none of us having come before. Parking was easy enough between street and the parking in rear, and with the park next to the restaurant it would be a pleasure to wait, or in our case to go sit and continue the conversation and socializing after the meal. The only caution is that portion sizes are on the small side, but otherwise you should definitely check this place out!"

"This was one of the best dinners we have had recently. Actually, it was quite fantastic! The waiter was perfect and very knowledgeable, the menu had a good variety of choices. Having the wine shop on site makes picking out your wine a bit of fun, rather than just pointing to a name on a list (although you can do that, too, if you don't want to get up from your table to look through the shelves). We had a guest with us from Boston and he raved about his meal. Kudos to the chef!"

"This is a place that I think is still a little unknown compared to the usual suspects around Frederick. A creative and thoughtful chef (who has a good future we believe), attentive waitstaff. The bar is part of the restaurant which is a bit of a downside because of the high noise level. One in our party has some hearing issues and unfortunately missed out on much of our table's conversation due to a group at the bar located next to our table. The layout of the place doesn't really allow much chance to get too far from that kind of noise. Try the duck on the menu right now--it is AMAZING, and most items are as commendable.Great drink and nice wine menu as well. Recommend, but hope it doesn't become TOO hard to get in!"

"My husband and I had a very enjoyable dinner this past Saturday. We found the food adventurous and approachable. I loved that we could hear eachother converse and the seating offered personal space. The staff was very attentive and knowledgable about the menu. The restaurant itself has an open feel with exposed brick. The wine list is innovative and you can purchase selections in the back of the store to enjoy at home. We dine a lot in Bethesda and it was nice to have a creative meal without stollers and kids monopolizing the scene. You'll leave saying..."what a great experience". Thank you for having black napkins!"

"The quality of the food preparation is excellent, it is really delicious!
4 stars vs. 5: My husband ordered the scallops which were incredibly delicious but they were (beautifully) plated with sweet potato frites cut to the exact size as the scallops and appeared to be scallops. A portion that looked like 8 or 9 scallops, was really 4 or 5 scallops. He was disappointed.
One of the owners or possibly a manager was smoking right outside of the door when we entered and exited. Simply unpleasant for a non-smoker."

"The place is sweet and serves excellent drinks. Our waiter had an annoying habit of clicking his pen while talking to us but otherwise he was efficient and nice. My meal was just ok for the price ($28) a rock fish over cheesy orzo. My husband had the scallops and after tasting his I was jealous... so some good and some not so much. I would go back for drinks because they make some of the best cocktails in Frederick, but I will be spending my dining dollars elsewhere."

"I rarely write review but make an exception this time because we had a wonderful experience at Shab Row. We ordered calamari risotto and foie gras for appetizers and fish of the day for entree and they were great! Our server was very attentive and friendly. Their wine selection is very good. "We came because of the Frederick Restaurant Week promo. The restaurant has a nice ambiance. Our server was excellent, personable and knowledgeable. The prix fixe offerings were limited and were not based on the full stock menu. Two of us ordered prix fixe menu items while the other ordered off of the full menu. The wine selection, salads, the beef burgundy and the salmon dish were excellent. The chicken dish was on the dry side while the desserts were decent but not spectacular. Given that this is more of a wine bar, it is probably reasonable to expect that this is their forte. Having said that, we will probabaly come back again as there were other appetizing-looking dishes we would like to try."

"Yet another superb dining experience at Shab Row Bistro & Wine Bar !!! Celebrated a Birthday with friends, and couldn't have asked for better food, service, or ambiance. We absolutely could not understand the one or two derogatory reviews left on this column--It's obvious these couple of morons are more familiar with MacDonald's and Burger King than fine dining establishments !!!! Keep up the GREAT work, Shab Row--We will definately be back !!!!"

"First time eating there and the owner Jack made it a very memorable evening. He came over while we were wine shopping in the back and made a great recommendation that even saved us a few dollars. Food was all very well prepared, hot, and the scallop meal, hanger steak were just right. The buttersquash soup was to die for. Salads were all fresh and tasty. Dressings were the right consistency.
The wine list is not pricey but there are many value selections that rival much more expensive wines. Beer selection is stellar. At the end of the evening, our waitress even took of two deserts just because they ran out of the bread pudding, which my comrade was dying to try. Just shows me that the owner and staff truly value their customer"

"The dining room was practically empty and the food was unbelievably poor. I ordered a steak with french fries and my son a hamburger also with fries. They put a ton of salt on the fries of indifferent potatoes. We did not touch them but we paid all the same. if you cannot get a decent steak and simple but good french fries, can you really call yourself a restaurant, let alone a good one. We could have had a much better and ...cheaper meal by going to McDonald's. To add insult to injury, we took the trouble and expense of driving some 40 miles round trip to try it. We were misead by all the nice comments posted on his restaurant! So be aware!"

"I would have to go back again to fair. I went for brunch with two of my friends. They liked their food; but portions were small. My flank steak was fatty and eggs were cold. It was 12:30-1:30p.m. and only three other people showed up to dine. I'll try lunch next time in the spring."

"The food was lovely, although the member of our party that ordered the fish special left hungry. The restaurant was colder than was comfortable for enjoying dinner. Our server was excellent. While everything was fine I doubt we would return given all the other options in the are with a better ambiance/atmosphere."

"Went here for Valentine's dinner and it was a great choice! We chose the perfect wine from the retail area with the sommelier's help and from there, we started a memorable evening. Split a nice size 1st course of mussels - classic (only small aside - I would prefer crusty bread to toasts to sop up the tasty liquid that ends up going to waste)followed with duck and arctic char (fish du jour). The dishes are just the right size and artful without being overly precious; everything on the plate tasted like its own little gem. We had a good size seasonal cobbler with a nice homemade mascarpone ice cream and the chocolate sampler (okay, but I have a feeling the chocoholic would prefer the molten cake). Server Kate was wonderful!!"
