The Federal Restaurant & Bar
Built by Samuel Converse in 1862, the impressive Greek revival structure at 135 Cooper Street in Agawam, Massachusetts became home to the Federal Hill Club in 1936. under the management of its owners the Moretti family, that establishment remained a premiere restaurant for over fifty years. The Federal's current owners Michael Presnal and Ralph Santaniello easily integrate the white linen elegance of that bygone era with a fresh and innovative "new american" cuisine that is perfectly prepared and impeccably served. strong Italian and French influences inspire the contemporary culinary style of Chef Presnal in dishes such as his red beet risotto, burnt tangerine glazed cod, and white-chocolate panna cotta. The Federal is dressed up as a special occasion restaurant, but is sociable and affordable enough for every occasion. It enjoys a dedicated following of appreciative diners from New York to Boston.

"The Federal is understated, as a colonial pub and restaurant should be. The beautiful moldings and paneling and traditional colonial colors warp you back to colonial times. The food however is American American American all the way...a fusion of modern with traditional. The food is well prepared, presented and spiced. This was the best Mother's Day brunch I ever hosted. The flowers I ordered were the centerpiece...I did not have to worry if they arrived. My only negative criticism....the waiter, while professional and moderately prompt...lacked a bit of ooompf. It would have been nice if he were a bit more personable and he was missing from the table more than I like...however...I prefer that over a haunt. This meal will not be forgotten."

"After a wonderful intro to your restaurant with a Longmeadow club a couple of years ago we had 2 meals with youth is Spring. The food is overrated now. Lobster was tasteless. Omelette , waffles and pancakes dried out. Croissants tasted nothing like many great French croissants in Northampton area. Muffins great. Cookies great. Seems fattier items only good choices. Nice waitresses. Pretty decor. Slightly juvenile valets. Sorry to be so honest."

"We've been dining at The Federal since it opened and it is our first choice for special occasions or a cozy dinner for two. The food is outstanding and the staff is wonderful. The "bucket of balls" is a must, but so is the entire menu!
Valet parking has made it inconvenient for self-parkers, frequently having to park in the back lot or on the street."

"Thoroughly enjoyed our meals. The plate presentations were very original and meals were prepared to order. We were surprised with a treat from the chef after our orders were taken. They brought out risotto balls for us to sample and these were excellent. We shared the crab cakes for starters, since they were small enough they did not to ruin our appetite. I chose to have two of the specials, the blood orange salad and the pork loin which were very, very good. My wife and guest started with the clam chowder which had a slight variation to the traditional and they found it very delicious and satisfying. My wife had the Chicken Bolognese which was very delicious, I had her leftovers for lunch the next day. Our guest tried the Bon Bon’s"

"Very good food. Has a very nice look and feel. Valet parking is available. Wife had the salmon which she loved, I got the Bon bons which was a butter squash ravioli dish. Mine was a little to sweet but still very good. Food fast and presentation was top notch. I will go back for sure."

"I was visiting the local area and looking for a fine dining establishment, which there are few, and a friend recommended the Federal for dinner. I was pleasantly surprised with my overall experience. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, the Bar was energetic and the dining rooms were well appointed. The menu had a variety of items to choose from; very creative ingredient parings and all that were tasted were excellent. You must try their fried risotto balls …really good!"

"Excellent restaurant with creative, tasty combinations of food. I had a dish with polenta, pulled pork, salmon, and crab cole slaw. Awesome, taste and textures of food. Also no problem with my wife eating gluten free. We highly recommend this restaurant. A little pricey but the portions are substantial."

"My girlfriend and I wanted to celebrate the purchase of our first home and what better place to do it than The Federal. We decided to sit at an open high-top table in the bar area because every Thursday starting at 5PM, they serve complimentary bite sized appetizers on spoons for an hour or so. It's a fun way to try a lot of different offerings and not get too full to enjoy a meal. We ordered a chicken meatball pizza, beet risotto with melted bacon, a poached pear salad to share, and a couple of drinks. Everything was fantastic as always! We love it there! The service is great and the atmosphere is great in the bar or dining room. We will definitely be back!"

"Our first dining experience at the Federal (we had dined at the Federal Hill Club) was outstanding. A friend whom has dined in fine restaurants in over 30 countries rated the Federal as 1 of her top 3 restaurants in the world. In any restaurant, the true value comes down to the food and The Federal did not disappoint - the food was outstanding. The wait staff was very attentive without being obvious and our waitress, Ashley, was knowledgeable and friendly. We will be back!"

"Our food was absolutely excellent and reasonably priced. The ambiance and decor was very nice. However, our waiter, while a nice gentlemen, was not very attentive. We waited for drinks, waited for water (didn't come to refill water glasses until we were ready to leave) and he dropped our pizza onto our table when he went to take it to wrap it to go. Because we were a party of 6, the 18% tip was automatically added, and on a $285 bill he didn't deserve quite that much."

"This experience was great and made for an awesome birthday dinner. From the valet to the dessert, everything involved in this whole operation is well thought out and very organized which makes for an extremely smooth evening. I had asked the waitress to pair a good wine with my meal and briefly mentioned I would like to be surprised as it was my birthday. I found it both classy and "tasteful" when my warm Nutella crepes came with an inconspicuous singular candle to signify that she was listening when I mentioned it was my birthday. Took plenty of pics of my dry harvested sea scallops and showed everyone how thirty dollars can get you plump delicious scallops atop of lobster. Incredible and reasonably priced! Wll be back"

"This was my second time here. The waiter didn't read us the specials and wasn't all that friendly in general, but we really didn't care since the food was incredible. Highly recommended, this is the best restaurant I've been too in the Hartford/Springfield area by far."

"The local "special occasion" restaurant for my family - in this case my mother's 85th birthday. Her children flew and drove in from Ohio, NYC and Boston; the effort was worth it for great ambiance and food. The chef's truffles were amazing, the blood orange salad light and flavorful and main courses were delicious. I can recommend the osso buco and I know my brother loved his short ribs. There was some confusion over my father's order of short ribs which he's had before. He did not want two sides so the waitress brought him a side order of short ribs in a tiny chowder bowl which was a little underwhelming from a presentation standpoint. But Tina came over to great my parents which always delights my mother."

"Thsi was my second visit to your restaurant. This time I invited friends from Chaplin CT to join us. They love love love good food and wine, and I knew they would be crazy about the Federal. Which they were. I heard "Best Mussels I ever had", "great Blood Orange salad", "perfect Manhattan" and for me I was speechless while I was eating the BonBons entree. I WILL be back again."

"This is the first time I've been to The Federal even after hearing many many recommendations from friends and family. My fiance and I went for a birthday/valentines day dinner and went all out. We had the famous risotto balls, ceasar salad, scallops, huge ribeye, nutella crepes with banana foster and espresso. The prices are higher than what I expected but worth it overall. I would definitely recommend The Federal to other couples and friends who want to treat themselves!"

"My girlfriend and I went to The Federal for Valentine's Day. We had a reservation for 8:30 but weren't seated until 9:00, but we didn't mind; just had a drink at the bar. The food was top notch. The bread, the salads, the entrees...all fantastic. I would highly recommend the Meatballs & Gnocchi and the Bon-bons (Butternut Ravioli). Even the half portion was filling after bread and salad. The martinis were also good, fairly priced, and STRONG...just they way I like 'em. I will definitely be back!"

"Classy restaurant that just changed their entire menu. All the food was amazing. Our service staff was warm, charming and willing to answer questions about the menu without eyerolling. She made sure the steaks 2 of our party ordered were made exactly as they chose - the picky eater appreciated her attention.
Only issue came with ordering wine. The first 2 bottles we ordered were out of stock. Chose one in stock. As our group picked a next wine, that too was out of stock. While wer recognize that January is after the holidays and inventory time, how often are 3 selections not available?
Still a memorable night at a first rate restaurant."

"Recently was looking for a good place to celebrate a 25th anniversary coming across this restaurant and reading all the raving reviews, decided that this was a good place to try. I am happy to be shown such hospitality and care. The federal had wonderfully executed dishes cooked to perfection which is helpful for individuals who have trouble eating hard foods. I highly recommend this restaurant for a date more than group events because of the lighting and older individuals might have a hard time reading the menu in the dim light."
