K Street, the road to the White House, is also the proud home to P.J. Clarke’s—the storied American Saloon with a history that dates back to the late 1800s. The original P.J. Clarke’s in Manhattan has stood beneath rows of skyscrapers for nearly 130 years, collecting famous and infamous regulars. Appreciated for the convivial ambiance and classic fare, P.J. Clarke’s is the quintessential American Saloon.
In our nation’s capitol, the story continues as oak and mosaic floors, red leather banquets and walls lined with eccentric portraits and nostalgic photos contribute to a reassuring familiarity that is classic P.J.s, but also construe a distinct Washington sensibility. Seasoned bartenders make favorite classic cocktails the right way; dexterous shuckers ply the freshest shellfish at a marble topped Raw Bar; and the old-school, convivial dining room welcomes government A-listers, students and their families and visitors to our capitol.
"Inside, the decor is classy . Very pleasant. I had the Grilled Free Range Chicken Salad, which came out quickly and did not disappoint. The chicken was seasoned gently and had great flavor, the greens the freshest and crunchy. The croutons stayed ultra crunchy (and not burnt) all the way to the end. Cheese looked and tasted freshly shredded. My personal preference is for a little less anchovy flavor in the dressing, but many people would say that the dressing was absolutely perfect; a Caesar after all. Beware the noise level--if you're looking for quiet, this is not the place. I suppose the level of noise provides some privacy where the tables are close together. I highly recommend, and will eat there again myself."

"PJ's is definitely on short list of restaurants to revisit. Brunch was scrumptious. The Blood Mary could have been a little better but that's a very minor complaint given the overall experience was lovely."

"I have been to P.J. Clarke's several times (it's a nice place for taking the department for a lunch treat -- everyone can find something they'll enjoy eating and it's more expensive than most folks would choose on their own). While I've always enjoyed my meal and the service is friendly and professional, I find it hard to really enjoy myself because the air conditioning is so extreme. Perhaps because the clientele tends to be men in suits, the ambient temperature is set to be comfortable while wearing a coat, but my group of polo shirted men and skirted women was just freezing."

"This was our second trip to PJ Clarkes. We had been there last year and enjoyed it. We had the same meals we had the last time because we had enjoyed them so much. This time the quality of the food was noticeably different as in not as good. Maybe they have hired a new chef since the last time. I ordered the shrimp and grits. The grits were soggy/watery and the entire dish was just ok. My hubby got the sliders and had to send them back twice. I will say that the customer service is wonderful. The waitress and manager did everything to get my husband's dish right and even offered to take the meal off the tab. We were in the sidecar downsstairs and pretty much had the place to ourselves..it was nice."

"I always get the same thing-chopped market salad. I recommend it. The wine list is also solid. Friendly and attentive wait staff-with no hovering. Good energy and noise level. The hosts are always welcoming. Cheers!"

"I had a GiltCity voucher for brunch here, so we trekked into the city for some bottomless mimosas and bloody marys. We each got classic bloody marys to start, which were tasty. We shared the chesapeake benedict and french toast, which were both delicious. I probably would go for the maryland benedict next time since I didn't think the asparagus really added anything. We got cheese grits and sausages on the side. The cheese grits were phenomenal! The best I've ever had. I finished brunch off with a passionfruit mimosa, which was really refreshing. Overall - great brunch! P.J. Clarke's also introduced me to Sir Kensington's scooping ketchup, which I've already placed my Amazon order for."

"P. J. Clarke's was the perfect embodiment of your expectations for a small, neighborhood steakhouse. Great food and drinks, great environment, and only blocks from the White House. Perfect for entertaining out of town guests or hosting a business lunch, and don't miss the late night bar menu."

"We didn't even get the right food delivered to the table--wrong Oysters and wrong Burger. "Cadillac Burger" was a good a good beef patty on a shoddy (at best) grocery store bun and no "Cadillac." I think a tasteful and lightly toasted brioche roll would have been much better. it was a $13 burger (tasty-yet smaller) that was dressed plain and fries were an additional $6. A plan burger with a presentation of a backyard cookout... it might have well came on a Dixie plate as well. But, almost $20 for this burger and fries--I know it came highly recommended, but I did not find anything special about this burger based purely on presentation that makes it this recommended. I was very disappointed with P.J. Clarke's and wish the service was better."

"Was way too loud and crowded. It's fine if that's the atmosphere that you're looking for; sports bar night. We were hoping for a quiet dinner. The website does not describe it well. Food was good."

"The Great brunch started with the restaurant accommodating us wanting to move inside from their great patio when the winds picked up. They easily transitioned us inside without missing a step. The menu had great options for mom, while also had things dad could eat (he's a bit particular and not very adventurous). Starting with the shrimp cocktail and chopped salad for me and mom was excellent. Dad even got into the mix for appetizers (normally he doesn't find things he'd like) and had the braised short rib spring rolls which were great. We some how managed to save room for entrees. The highlight was the fried chicken and sweet potato waffles Amazing! Definitely will be back to see the excellent chef and team there again."

"We were disappointed the minute we walked in. Full of tourist families in shorts and misbehaving kids. My "medium rare" grilled prime rib was quite burned around the edges from an apparent grease fire beneath it on the grill. The wines by the glass selection was extremely limited (the waiter offered a rose with my steak). The wine arrived about half way through the entrée. The cocktails were clumsily made and imbalanced. And after all of that, we could have easily spent the same or less at an actual nice restaurant like Estadio, the other place we'd considered going that evening - but we thought we'd try something new thinking it might be vouched for by the fact that the place has been nominated for a Rammy. Not so."

"We had a really tasty good lunch at PJ Clarke's. I'm looking forward to going back and trying something else on the menu - everything looked delicious. Great server too - she was warm and hospitable and did not make us feel rushed in any way. Thanks!"

"Loved it! Not a huge portion of food on the plate, but it was extremely tasty. Loved the ambiance. Waiter was fantastic. We chose to go with the unending bloody mary's/mimosas. Very nice, we will be back!"

"The atmosphere was nice and the staff was friendly. Our waiter was pretty good but then vanished. Water not refilled, waited about 15 minutes after we were ready for our check and finally found our waiter again. The food was overcooked, so the steak had to be sent back and well as the French dip. We aren't folks who usually send things back. Considering the price of the meals (not including the alacarte sides), it was very disappointing."

"This was our first visit to P.J. Clarke's. The service was very good and attentive despite the large lunch crowd. I tried the lunch special and my wife had the mini cheeseburgers - (Note) Don't order more than one type of cheese for each mini cheeseburger, otherwise you will be charged for each addtional type of cheese you try :-( Anyway, the burgers were quite good, especially with thier house ketchup. My lunch was just so-so, needed more sauce to make the dish complete. Will try them one more time for Dinner, we shall see."

"My daughter and I went there last night as it is in the neighborhood we are tourist visiting D.C.E have noticed the prices are a bit high in our surrounding area, and this was true of McCormach...My salmon was way overcooked. IT WAS SUPPOSED TO HAVE BEEN COOKED ON A CEDAR PLANK But all the flavor was gone from over cooking.my daughters sea scallops were a bit better but not much flavor.the beet salad was fine not great.I would expect better cooking at THES prices -oh well."

"Master of the one hour turn. Prepared to be seated, watered, fed and checked in 45 minutes. In the meantime the service is friendly, the food average to good and the atmosphere the standard DC stuffy pub.
"Great addition to the neighborhood. For evening diners valet parking is terrific. Our out of town guests felt like they had a taste of the real DC. Thank you!"

"I arrived and said that I had a reservation and was told that it would be about half an hour. I was stunned - I had chosen the restaurant from Open Table solely because of its location and the fact I could get a reservation - without the reservation I never would have gone there. When I complained, a manager said that he would take care of it and after 5 minutes we were seated at the most exposed table in the bar amidst a host of empty bar tables. Our location was extremely loud and undesirable but we made the best of it. Our waiters were nice but made it very clear throughout the whole evening that they wanted us to hurry up and get done. Fine bar restaurant, but they shouldn't take reservations on Open Table."

"Since this was a holiday weekend, the upstairs dining area was crowded and vibrant. The hostess, noting that our group was only adults, asked if we would prefer dining in the downstairs section. It was lovely...dark leather, white tablecloths, attentive staff. The menu was full of delicious and varied options, the wine and drink offerings were plentiful, and the waitstaff was right on cue. We could not have asked for a nicer evening."
