Dinosaur Bar-B-Que - Harlem
The Scene
The Syracuse-based barbecue phenomenon plunked a sprawling roadhouse with all the familiar back-road accoutrements into an abandoned meat factory. Unfinished wood-beamed ceiling, burlap bag curtains, scattered country bric-a-brac, and an enthusiastic greeting feel worlds away from the city. The roll call of devotees includes area families, couples on casual dates and groups of Columbia students.
The Food
Though fried green tomatoes and punchy boiled shrimp start things off right, the smell of smoking meats quickly adjusts the focus. The smokey-sweet pork ribs gently release from the bone and the Texas brisket, a touch dry, gets a lift from a topping of tangy cured jalapeños and a dash of hot sauce. It's even safe to venture from red meat with the truly moist and tender chicken, brined then smoked for deep flavor. With the exception of the cakey corn bread, sides keep pace, with tangy Creole potato salad and sweetened baked beans the standouts.

"So my family and I went to Dinosaur BBQ after my graduation Saturday. Both our appetizer and entrees were great. Just as i was about halfway through, I noticed a visitor encroaching on our celebratory meal. He started to climb the wall. As I watched, I assumed he would go away or disappear. Not the case. This was a fearless visitor. As he lowered to the table and neared my plate, I had no choice but to take off my shoe to stomp him (or her). My brother soon scooped him up with a napkin and threw him into the bucket that I assume was intended for ribs. I hailed the waitress over, who appeared shocked, disgusted, and concerned. The bus boy came to take him away. The manager then came to apologize and offer a discount on our meal."

"Big portions, lots of meat. Low-brow, eat-with-the-fingers, fun. Everything's very tasty. Definitely a place to go if you want to gorge yourself and throw caution to the wind. The wait staff is friendly. The place is always jumping, so make a reservation if you can. If not, they have an efficient waiting system, with speakers outside so you can hear your table called if you step out for some air."

"Made reservations. Glad that we did because it was super crowded with people waiting. Our table was ready and our waitress was prompt. Ordered the skirt steak, which was delicious, with mac and cheese (average) and sweet potatoes(pretty good). Spouse had rib and brisket combo. Brisket also delicious and tender. Ribs could have been more tender but still had good taste. Coleslaw (good) , bar b que fried rice (really good), potato salad (average), French fries (really good) also delicious corn bread."

"Beer list is somewhat lacking compared to Syracuse and Rochester but it's the same great menu. The Dinosaur is one of my regular haunts in the Rochester area so I was glad I had the chance to sample the one in the big apple. They're a little bit out of the way (I was staying in Soho) but it's worth the trek up to Harlem. Ribs, pulled pork and brisket are all first rate. Everyone in my group went left satisfied. Would definitely recommend."

"I liked the atmosphere of Dinosaur's BBQ. The place was definitely crowded, as it was Easter Sunday, but I've found the place is always live. I thought the food was good, too. I liked the sauces, but once the sauce was gone, my chicken was kind of flavorless. Maybe I just needed to put more barbecue sauce. The cornbread was yummy and so were the salted potatoes. Overall, I had a great time and got to check out a cool spot in Harlem."

"Dinosaur BBQ is undoubtedly the best BBQ in the tri-state area. The atmosphere is superb and the food is incredible. I am a vegetarian, but I always find delicious options. The macaroni and cheese is outstanding and I have been known to go just for that! We like to sit in the bar area and I have always had a great experience. However, our server seemed weeded even though there were not a lot of tables. However, she appeared to be the only server in the bar area. There were 2 bartenders on and they were also very slow. We only ordered beers and single liquor drinks, but it took several minutes to get it. They seemed more interested in chatting with each other and had no sense of urgency. I will be back for the food, but service needs work."

"I had looked forward to visiting dinosaurs for some time having first seen it on man vs food. Whilst the food did not disappoint, some of the dishes were luke warm, rather than hot. Also, packaging the meat with two sides makes for a belly busting experience. i would have preferred the inclusion of one side, and a price reduction. I ate at mighty quinns at 103 2nd avenue earlier in the week and their food was better with a more forgiving menu structure. However, beer selection was excellent, and reasonably priced too. All in all, a good experience."

"Got a last minute reservation for a Saturday night and I was lucky to get it. The place was packed. There was a lot of energy it's a really good weekend spot. The food was good, the service was great and we got seated right away. Definitely make sure you get a reservation if you are going on a weekend night. Parking kind of sucky, but what can you do? It's NYC."

"This being my first time to visit, I overall liked it. I took my friend here to celebrate her birthday. The food was good, but the portions seemed very small to me. The sausage I ordered was only one link? For the costly amount you pay at the restaurant, you would think that you would get at least two sausages with the entree!
Even though I did enjoy the time I was in the restaurant (our server was excellent!!), I'm not sure I would come back because of the small food portion sizes.

"Food is excellent. Make sure you have a reservation. I got there at 7PM for my 7:30PM reservation (Saturday night). Got seated at 7:15PM. People were there before me (no reservation) and they were still waiting for a seat after I left. I heard the hostess say the wait was at least 2 hours for a party of 2. Would definitely go again, just plan the trip well in advance."

"The hostesses (there were 3) were a bit of a mess (mispronouncing my name and calling me to the stand 3x before our table was ready) but other than that the food, service, and overall experience was solid. The food makes it all worth it. Bar has a great beer selection while you wait as well."

"Food was great and the atmosphere was energetic. However something was lost in the service. Our wait person was not the most friendly and just seemed like they were ready to go home. Since this was my family first time we were expecting more. Service is what kept them from being rated higher."

"I had the presence of mind to make a reservation 1 month in advance. When we arrived on a Friday evening, there was a considerable crowd and the wait for a table was about 2 hours. Once in, we were whisked to our table right away and were well taken care of. Josie gave us fantastic service. Fried green tomatoes, deviled eggs, ribs - Everything tasted fantastic. We enjoyed our evening immensely."

"For NYC, this was a pretty decent barbeque joint, and I especially enjoyed the pulled pork. The pork was nice and juicy, and was definitely fork-tender. I also enjoyed some of their sides, such as the mashed sweet potatoes and Syracuse potatoes. Everything else was, well, less than desired. The brisket was tough, when it is supposed to be even more tender than pulled pork, the ribs could have been more tender and juicy, and their sauce was only decent. However, this is coming from a girl whose boyfriend likes to smoke his own meats and goes on road trips especially for barbeque, so my standards may be higher than the average person's. Overall, I had a good meal, especially considering I was on the Eastern Seaboard, and not the South."

"This is a great place to eat real BBQ. A treat for those of us coming across from the UK and an authentic American dining experience. A little off the beaten track but well worth the trip. If you like your meat cooked slow, and so tender it slides off the bone, this is certainly the place to go!"

"3rd time at Dinosaur BBQ in Harlem. The food was great, as usual. We had a group of six. Our waiter didn't come back at all to refill drinks, ask if we wanted more beers, or check how everything was going. Probably because he knew he was getting the automatic 20% tip."

"Great place, took my 6 yr old there for her bday and she loved it as well as us. I just wished the waitress told us that the food we ordered wwas big enough enough for 2 people. We were so stuffed from the apps that my husband and I took our plates home exactly the way it came out."
