"Island Lava Java is something of a chameleon. During the day it serves up tasty coffee, breakfasts, and lunches. It also has a nice selection of smoothies. At 5:00, the restaurant switches over to a bistro - the prices rise, the dishes are more ambitious, and musical entertainment arrives outside.
We went for dinner...which was OK...but I wish I could recommend it more highly. All the pieces of a truly marvelous experience are there...they just don't quite know how to put it together. I think my wife's experience sums up the restaurant quite nicely. She ordered the fish special and it came out of the kitchen ridiculously overcooked. Not only the fish but also the sides....the stacked potatoes had hardened into a"

"This restaurant is located directly across the street from the ocean and has beautiful views of the sunsets and ocean activities. They do not have a liquor license, so they do not serve any alcohol, however they do allow you to bring your own and will supply the wine opener and classes, etc. There is an ABC store just down from the restaurant, where I walked and got us a nice bottle of wine to have with dinner. I was pretty surprised that this ABC store had some nice wines at reasonable prices, but they did. The food was excellent, with the exception that my wife’s entrée was cold when it was first brought to the table. The server quickly took it back and brought her a fresh and hot entrée, that was excellent."

"Great spot for breakfast or lunch and probably dinner. This was our second time to the island and we had to return to Island Lava Java and it didn't disappoint. Everything was delicious from the vegetable omlette to the bagel stacked with veggis to the kids cholate chip pancakes to the bowl of fruit and huge cinnamon roll. Nice place to sit outside, look at the harbor and listen to live music. We were there early but it did start to get crowded as the morning progressed - make a reservation through opentable if you want to be sure to get a table."

A little for everyone on the menu, food was well prepared, very tasty, large portions. Service was very good, waitress knew menu well, explained dishes we needed help with, made recommendations. Outdoor seating, a local musician providing island oriented music, and view to the ocean along with the food and the service make this a not to be missed place to eat while in Kona. Definitely will be back next time on the big island."
