Catherine's Restaurant
Catherine"s Restaurant is a charming BYOB nestled in the heart of Chester County's horse country. An upscale casual destination restaurant, located in the historic (c. 1851) Unionville General Store, Catherine's is 'dining at it's BEST.' (Philadelphia Inquirer) Chef Kevin McMunn's "Wild Mushroom & Lump Crab Soup is EXQUISITE." - Craig Laban. Catherine's is one of the Delaware Valley's top BYOB's and has earned many accolades over the past decade. They are rated EXCELLENT by Zagat. Chef Kevin McMunn and his partner & wife Marybeth Brown are an exceptional team that pay homage to Brown's grandmother, Catherine, with their warm and welcoming hospitality and unbelievably delicious food! The gorgeous dining room is lit entirely by candles - over 125 - which adds to the special touch of mini flashlights which come with every menu. Catherine's has recently added Lunch and weekend Brunch to their dining hours. The Blueberry Lemon Ricotta Pancakes are the perfect way to end the weekend!

"Brought my mom and wife for breakfast / lunch on a Saturday to celebrate Mother's Day. We enjoyed our time at your restaurant very much. My mom especially enjoyed the morning which was the important thing. Our service was very friendly and the food good. We felt like we had gone back in time with the old wood floors and the view out the windows onto the little old town of Unionville. Thank you !"

"The environment was enjoyable and relatively quiet, although it was pretty dark and we were provided with lights to read the menus. I ordered a steak and my girlfriend had salmon. Neither of us was particularly impressed, but maybe our hopes were too high. My steak was pretty average and certainly nowhere close to the quality of a steak you would get at somewhere like the Capital Grille. My girlfriend liked her fish less than I liked my steak, but it wasn't bad and she ate most of it.
The server was friendly but elusive. She packed up my girlfriend's leftovers and forget them in the back for almost half an hour while we just sat there.
It was worth going for the 1,000-point table that night, but we probably won't be back."

"We have been going to Catherine's for years, but never for brunch until last Sunday. Service was excellent in the midst of a busy day (always personal, but never cloying), and food was as usual - that is, perfect. Catherine's is not flashy and doesn't try too hard to be slick. The formula is great ingredients, perfect preparation, and a lovely atmosphere that can be dressed up or casual. Eggs Benedict and pancakes were the big winners, along with Key Lime Pie and Bread pudding. Go there!"

"I love coming out to Catherines - the ride through the country is spectacular and then we are greeted with an enthusiasm that you have for family or old friends. We get fantastic service every time we go and love that the staff is so friendly. This time we tried the burger, and I have to say, true to the sign, best burger in town - esp. with chipotle ketchup. Instead of pasta salad, they substituted fresh fruit, which was really nice. My husband and friends had the french toast (thick and tasty - with plenty left to share) and crab cake salad - great! And of course lots of coffee. Sitting by the front window really made us feel like it was spring even if the weather outside wasn't quite so warm. We'll definitely be back"

"We've gone to Catherine's for dinner and it was always good. On Sunday we introduced two new couples to Catherine's but went for brunch. High - lump crab and mushroom soup was terrific! Lows - We had eaten a quarter of our soup when the waitress brought the main course. I commented that it would have been nice to wait until we had finished our soups since both the starter and the entrees were hot. She agreed but did nothing. The viscosity of the hollandaise on the eggs benedict was like water and the taste was undetectable. The chef and waitress had to notice since it was literally like water on the plate and did not stick to the benedicts at all. My husband said that he will not go back. He also did not like the backless benches."

"It's been quite some time since I have been to Catherine's and our current visit did not disappoint. The service was very attentive without being intrusive; food was quickly served; and overall we enjoyed our Easter brunch. The only disappointing aspect was that we were asked to leave our table (we had just settled the bill and were enjoying the last of our coffee). Apparently a couple was waiting for the table even though there were plenty of open deuces and as far as we understand specific tables cannot be reserved."

"We had another fine dinner at Catherine's on a Saturday evening. My pistachio-encrusted goat cheese appetizer was superb. This is the first time I have had anything besides their wonderful mushroom soup as a starter and I'm glad I tried the goat cheese. My filet was cooked nicely and my wife's scallops were beautifully prepared. The $7 corkage is still a bugaboo of mine and I wish the restaurant would establish some kind of basic requirement for suitable attire. Dining on a Sat. night with people wearing baseball caps and sloppy jeans leaves a bit to be desired!"

"The ambience was good particularly as normally in these parts the whole world has gone to bed by 9. Went with starters per Zagat's blog and the mushroom and crab soup was very good. After that food was not at same level. The scallops with ginger pesto was over flavored and the duck and accompanying potatoes was too greasy. Presentation was old style, no large white plates with food thoughtfully displayed. Service while friendly was too fast."

"Lovely little restaurant in the middle of Chester County horse country. Extra points for being a byob. Service was amazing; food was wonderful. My crab cakes were solid crab; my sister in law's duck was delicious. The mushroom soup alone was worth the trip. The dining room is larger than you'd imagine and when we first got there (reservations at 6), things were calm. However, once the place filled up, it got quite loud."

"We had another nice meal in Catherine's comfortable, casual setting. Their mushroom soup with crab is outstanding and both our grouper and scallop entrees were tasty. We split a delicious piece of creamy key lime pie for dessert. The entire meal took less than an hour and we did not feel rushed. I'm still not happy about the $7 corkage fee they inflict on diners."

"Catherine's has great food, ambience and service. The chocolate lava cake is to die for! I love the casual atmosphere and the great wait staff. The menu has alot of variety and the servers are friendly and knowledgeable. I will definitely go back to Catherine's and recommend it to friends."

"This is an attractive country restaurant with a good food and BYOB. But there are two seatings and we were the first seating. We actually arrived 10 minutes early for our 6:30 reservation. We finally crumbled on the THIRD request to order and our appetizers came right away. My huband's mushrshoom crab soup was fabulous. My spring greens with goat cheese had just unwashed, sandy lettuce, just some red leaf out of the bag - $12.95. Our entrees arrived the minute they removed our appetizer plates. Both entrees were well prepared and delicious. I mentioned when they brought our plates that it was much too fast. They serve very nice food in an attractive setting. What a shame to feel like you are being pushed out the door."

"Catherine's is one of those charming places that is a bit off the beaten path as far as restaurants are concerned so it is easy to forget it is tucked away up 82. The food is very thoughtfully prepared; most ingredients are from a relatively close radius of the restaurant itself. Hearty breakfasts to satisfy both sweet and savory cravings and artfully prepared entrees. Personable and attentive staff in an intimate, French country chic atmosphere both day and evening."

"Have been hearing wonderful things since moving to the area from people whose opinion I trust. Very nice menu, quaint atmosphere, and good service. We had the duck and the salmon. Both were very good but didn't completely blow us away like the meals at some other fine restaurants in the area. I will return for the atmosphere and to try other dishes that looked delicious. Overall, I'd give it a grade of B against some pretty stiff local competition. The key lime pie was excellent. Price range was appropriate $8-12 apps, $21-29 entrees. Reasonable portion sizes. My only major complaint was the parking lot...brutal potholes and loose stones everywhere."

"Hadn't been to Catherine's in a few years. Was not disappointed with the food. Limited menu but all very good. More than half the entrees were seafood. Service was a bit slow, but could've been due to waitress handling many tables.

"My husband and I have always enjoyed the food and charm of Catherine's. However, the dining room seems to get darker and darker every time we dine there. We shouldn't need a flaslight to read the menu and it is very difficult to see the food on your plate. Turning up the lights would enhance the charm of the restaurant. We probably will not return until the days are longer and we can actually see each other and what we are eating."

"Everything was very good, my husband had the blackened tuna & said it was the best he'd ever had. I had filet, it was tender & cooked perfectly but a little bland. Our friend had scallops that unfortunately weren't cleaned well as he got a few bites of sand in them. We mentioned it to our server but they didn't seem to care."

"Catherine's remains a premium type restaurant with casual ambiance and outstanding menu choices. The service has never failed to be superb. You never feel rushed and the dishes are brought with proper spacing rather than cascading from one selection to the next.
