A Minneapolis tradition was born on October 2, 1947, when the Oak Grill opened for business. Architect Bob Hansen used characteristics from the Jacobean period in the design of the rooms. The ornate fireplace, originally from Salisbury, England, was over 300 years old when it was transported in sections and reassembled in the Oak Grill. With its solid oak columns and vast frame, it soon became the room's focal point. Its distinctive appearance, along with dark paneling, red chairs and dim lighting, help give the Oak Grill its cozy ambiance.
"The food was very good, the service wasn't. I don't know why I had to pay a full table service charge ($8) when there were only two of us having lunch. Also, the server forgot to give us a parking voucher (we requested it), so we had to go back and get it."

"Lovely, quiet, with beautiful dark wood paneling, white tablecloths... yet, surprisingly reasonable prices. My meatloaf and mashed potatoes were unusual, and delicious, made with spinach and red bell pepper for flavor and moistness. The pop-overs were kind of burnt, and were not brought out right away, but oh well. One reason we ate there, was to take advantage of the voucher for free parking in the ramp, which is so close to entertainment venues. We were finished, and filling our "doggy bags" when our server asked about our plans for the rest of the evening, and then told us that if we'd mentioned it earlier, they offer a free glass of wine to each diner on her way to a show. Too late now, but we wouldn't have imbibed anyway."

"Enjoyed our girls luncheon at the Oak Grill. We love those popovers and the enviroment. It also is a central locatioin to meet.
This time it seemed quite noisy but possible there were other groups enjoying their time together. Usually we find the restaurant failry quite so we can enjoy the conversation of others across the table."

"We were 5 persons on a busy day - the Friday before end of Macy's flower show. We had to wait 15 minutes past our reservation time to be seated (due to the event). I had made table top online reservations and it worked very well, as I had to cancel an earlier in the week reservation, and your online confirmation page gave me the opportunity to modify my reservations to another day! This made it easy for me to change day and time! We had to return a couple of tea orders due to cool water and a popover overdone. All staff was very busy, but did their best to accommodate our wishes. One thing especially I liked - I requested a table for 5 along the wall or in a corner and we had a perfect table for the busy day in the Oak Grill!"

"I loved the Oak Grill's long-time tradition of serving all diners a perfect large popover fresh out of the oven as my group of four sat down. The Oak Grill made a beautiful and large Asian Salad with fresh greens and veggies, succulent chicken, crispy fried wontons, and a great dressing. Our waitress was pleasant and efficient. At the end of the meal, the waitress brought us each a small piece of excellent German chocolate cake. If you're shopping in Macy's in downtown Minneapolis, or are anywhere nearby over the lunch hour, I highly recommend lunch at the Oak Grill."

"This legendary restaurant is steeped in the tradition of downtown classy dining. It is filled with friends honoring the occasion of shopping and meeting downtown. The caramelized salmon is so delicious. The popovers were perfect. Service is friendly and attentive. Combined with a flower show visit, you have a worthy event."

"A great tradition for us to go with the "Dayton's" Flower Show (which was superb this year!). My beef salad was great. My friend's chicken pot pie, long a favorite of hers, was not up to par. She said she would not order it again. Our stargazer cocktails were just lovely."

"Being able to book reservations for our group before attending the Macy's Flower Show was very convenient. If I decide to take in any future shows at that Macy's Auditorium, I will probably book lunch here again because it is so convenient. The popovers were also fresh and hot."

"We attended the flower show and then had lunch. It was so nice to be able to eat at the same location without going out again. In spite of being VERY busy, we had prompt and attentive service. Food was great- thank you for the many fish options."

"I took my two 20 year old grandsons to expose them to a great dining experience. They have not been brought up with this tradition but they certainly loved the ambience and remarked several times about the beautiful wood and paneling, shields, etc. They were very impressed. Because of family situations, we celebrate holidays with them whenever we can fit it in. It was a very good experience for us grandparents."

"My only complaint is that the bill was not itemized. I strongly prefer that so that it can be checked for accuracy. The waiter went out of his way to check with the chef twice about my dietary constraints. Greatly appreciated!"

"I have been a great fan of THE OAK GRILL for many years and have eaten there many, many times and always been very satisfied. However, Monday night was not a good experience. I had made a reservation and did get the table I requested. From there on it was all down hill. The service was slow, the "famous popover" which I have always looked forward to arrived and was very overdone and my guest's popover was actually burned. We did receive replacements when we complained and they were wonderful. However, I do believe the waitperson should have noticed the condition of the first two before serving them. I ordered the fish and chips which had a spicy coating that was really hard (over fried) the small amount of fish was dry."

"Even with a reservation, we had to wait for 'our table' to be vacated, which did not happen until we asked for another location if available. We were not asked about a time restraint for our lunch hour, so if I was not in a hurry this place would have received higher marks from me. Server was nice but delayed due to a very busy lunch rush. Food was excellent and I would definitely return."

"This was a wonderful place to go with my girlfriend's group. It was comfortable, it was easy to converse because we didn't have to shout over noise like other restaurants. We had a reservation and got right in. The waitress was awesome. The food was very good and reasonably priced. We definitely would go here again!"

"Horrible that Macy's didn't put more staff on today-they knew the place would be full up with the flower show. Servers were swamped, ours was frazzled, three times rudely cutting off my partner in mid sentence, running away, saying she'd be "right back" -how sad. The food was decent, like a private country club trying to keep up with the trends of the time (kale chips, risotto, red pepper sauce), and yet remain timeless (popovers!). Server told us after apps we would need to keep our silverware for entrees bcz(at 5:30pm!) they were running out. Even more frustrating to keep hoping that our server would stop by ever again, ever? Waited for the check for 15 mins. C'mon folks, you've been running the flower show for decades, plan a little!"

"The Oak Grill is a classic American dining establishment and a hidden gem in Minneapolis. The dining room is large and pleasant, anchored by a beautiful fireplace; the food is a mixture of classic comfort food and interesting contemporary combinations; the service we experience was top notch."

"Overall, everyone's meal was wonderful. The popovers came out hot and fresh (my favorite) and the menu items were presented by our server with some great recommendations. The only issue was when we were getting ready to depart, we had to have the bill seperated onto three credit cards and we lost our server for what seemed to be about 20 minutes. Next time, we'll be sure to explain the billing set up prior to the server entering the order."

"Food was very good but the popovers were spectacular. I naturally would comment on them because they were the reason I made the reservations. I love them and the ones at the Oak Grill are the best to be found in the Twin Cities. My husband and I had a very romantic lunch sitting be the fireplace. The service was wonderful and friendly. Can't wait to go again."
