Socca
This seasonally focused Lakeview French-Italian country eatery is named for the chickpea-flour cake popular in southeastern France. The menu shifts seasonally, but you can expect appetizers such as steamed mussels with garlic, white wine, tomato confit, lemon and herbs; crispy thin flat-bread pizzettes that have been featured on the Food Network ; homemade pasta dishes; and bistro classics such as pan-roasted hanger steak with garlic-herb butter and pommes frites. Daily dinner specials typically include a fresh pasta, fish, and Allen Brothers prime steaks.
The wine list features picks from Italy and France as well as a California-heavy U.S. selection with ample by-the-glass options and a few flights. The restaurant also hosts regular wine dinners and events. Socca"s dining room is casual and lively, with a neighborhood bistro vibe. Sunset-hued walls and floor-to-ceiling windows on a corner location give the space an open, airy feel.

"The management and the staff at Socca took extra care with my proposal dinner for my fiance and I and I appreciate the details. The manager notified me that he would be obtaining new flowers for me that were beautiful which put service above and beyond what we expected. Christina our server was attentive polite and knowledgeable. The food; dear god the food was amazing. Thank you to the chef for preparing the best burger I have had in my life. My fiance enjoyed the mussels and her pasta"

"We had an amazing experience. First time dining at Socca. We were with friends and all of us really enjoyed it. Our meals were delicious. The service was excellent. Kudos to Mark our server, really great service!! Thanks! We will definitely be back. Scallops were delicious, pork chop was great, and the 16 oz steak (bone in) was to die for. I'm a meat lover and this steak was the bomb. Also, enjoyed the grilled calamari that had a bit of a kick. Yum! Can't wait to come back."

"Basically, the food was great. However, our waiter was a bit pushy: I ordered one glass of wine and was warned it was sweet; then a second and it too did not meet his standards. I was told (and I quote) "Forget the Pinot Grigio." Then he started pushing another wine (that just happened to be the most expensive by the glass on the menu, go figure). I ordered an unsweetened iced tea instead.
Way to get that sale, dude."

"We loved our Pizzette (figs, carmalized onions), always the best thing at Socca, but I've had better meals there in the past. I had the special which was a crab ravioli. It would have been better with cheese and the lemon flavor overpowered everything else. Couldn't even taste the crab. My husband's meal was bland. We have enjoyed the food at Socca at other times, this was just an off night."

"By "energetic" noise, we mean LOUD. It was so loud in there we certainly couldn't talk to one another without yelling and I felt bad for the servers. Once the dinner rush died down it was better, and overall the ambience is good besides that. High quality food - I especially loved the mussels appetizer. Not many vegetarian options since almost everything was at least topped off with prosciutto. Our server was great. Not pushy, genuinely friendly. We would go again, but the high prices will keep us out. We were only able to go a second time because of a gift certificate we were given."

"Had dinner at Socca with a friend last night and we both had a wonderful time; outstanding dinner and warm, friendly service as always. Socca is incredibly consistent at providing a wonderful dining experience at very affordable pricing for the quality and quantity of the cuisine. We each took advantage of the Wednesday night create-your-own wine flights; had pizettes, the calamari appetizer (loved the heat) and for entrees I had the barley gnocchi special with corned beef & cabbage and my friend a prosciutto wrapped fish special. Everything was fantastic. Socca is firing on all cylinders!"

"Making the reservation was easy. I was taking my lady friend out for her birthday. It was our first time at the restaurant. As we arrived we were warmly welcome by both the Maitre'D and the bartender. Seated promptly. Mark took over from there. He read us like a book, we do use big letters and small words, seriously though, he was perfect on being there when we needed him and absent when we didn't. "Passed by this place a few times and it looked great for a romantic date night. Tool my girlfriend there after both got great career news and the food was outstanding. We try a new restaraunt as much as possible and this has been our best find in months. The staff knew the wine list well and recommended several choices. The frites with spicy ketchup and cheese fondue was awesome for starters. Our food arrived quickly and was outstanding. Our only regret was not having room for desert, which we will remedy soon."

"We got off to a rather awkward start, our table for 8 was really a round table for 6 with a small square table butted up against it. But we adjusted and we ordered some beverages and appetizers. The pizzettes are delicious, as are the mussels. And our entrees were outstanding. I had the steak w/frites, a few had the salmon special, and another the short ribs, and all were outstanding. Very flavorful and cooked perfectly. Our server was a delight as well. I really think this is a wonderful neighborhood place with great food. But make sure you plan on a leisurely evening so you can enjoy it. They don't appear to have a large staff, but everyone is friendly, professional and hard working. And all together, they make it work beautifully!"

"I am IN LOVE with this restaurant. This was my 2nd time. A friend first brought me and I couldn't wait to get back. Just as amazing as my first visit, the 2nd was equally as incredible! First off, the bar is gorgeous! The dining room lovely. Next and perhaps most important, the service is outstanding! From the waiters to the bussers, everyone is exceptional. Years ago in my youth I was a waitress for 14 years, so when I say service is impeccable, you know I am serious! Now for the food....simply unbelievable. I haven't tried the whole menu yet, but plan to. Short ribs are perhaps the best I have ever eaten. The mussels are divine.Their version of Carbonara would make any Italian smile ( and I'm part Italian, so I know this to be true!)"

"My wife and I had another wonderful dinner at Socca last night. We took advantage of the Wednesday night create your own wine flight for $15 (you can pick any three of their wines by-the-glass). I had the spaghetti with seafood for my first time at Socca and loved it; generous portions of shrimp, scallops and mussels with a delicious spicy broth. Socca recently has added some new talent to the kitchen; they already were operating at a high level and are now bound to become even better! "The food was delicious. This was our second time here and we came back because the food was great the first time. However, both times, our main entree was not served until 1.5 hours after ordering. We had our salad and then waited 45 minutes for our entree. Our server didn't apologize when asked where our entree was and she was snappy when asked if the dessert would take long to come out. We would come back for the food, but unfortunately would not take friends or family out here because of the service."

"I went to Socca on a date with my girlfriend and everything was better than expected. The food was delicious - we had a goat cheese & arugula salad followed by the scallops and the tortalloni. Both of us thoroughly enjoyed every part of the meal. Our server was adequately attentive.
It's clearly a popular place, though getting a reservation was easy. It was a great place for a date, although pretty noisy. That wouldn't stop me from going back, though."

"My wife and I decided to eschew our diets for a night and on the spur of the moment treated ourselves to dinner at Socca. Wednesdays Socca features create your own wine flight for $15; you can pick any three wines on their wine list. Food wise I tried to stay somewhat true to my diet by ordering the smoge pizzette as my appetizer; a cheeseless pizza with mounds of spinach, curried chickpeas and a garlicky red sauce. Lots of good flavor despite being healthy (at least as far as pizza goes). I also had Chef Roger's famous mussels; a very generous portion with a delicious broth. My wife opted for the housemade pasta with the most ginormous meatball I have ever seen; this was quality and quantity. Another fantastic dinner at Socca."

"We've eaten here many times. Have liked or loved all the food we've tried. This night we had the mussels which were excellent. The frites and scallops were also very good. The only reason I gave the Service 3 stars was that the bar was packed on a Saturday night and the food server assigned to that area was not easy to find. The bartenders were also crazy busy. Don't think it's good service to have to really assert yourself to just get a drink! Maybe this server was also busy working in the main room. Think we prefer to be there during the week when the service is much better."

"We really enjoyed Socca. I had two 22-year-olds with me and they picked it and really enjoyed it as well. Service was great (Sarah). We had the pasta special which included a giant meatball -- how can you not love that! And we know our pasta having spent lots of time in Italy and we make our own homemade."

"I found Socca when I first moved here. I bring all my friends from out of town out for dinner here. The Pork chop is to die for and I have yet to be disappointed with the Ribeye. The menu has something for everyone, even a picky eater. Good wine list and the bottle prices are very reasonable.
I have always taken a bit of grief from friends who visit and we leave downtown to go to dinner, I have yet to have them continue to hassle me once the food arrives.
Highly recommended."

"Last night Socca's daily pasta special featured homemade ravioli with pork belly from a pig the chef had just butchered in house; this was such an amazing dish. There is such great variety in Socca's nightly specials (generally there is a pasta based dish, a fish based dish and a prime steak based dish)and each time I have ordered one of their specials it has been delicious. I have now dined at Socca over 50 times and have yet to have anything less then a wonderful meal. As always the staff was extremely attentive and friendly (as has been the case since my very first visit here). If you want an upscale but relaxed and affordable dinner Socca is one of Chicago's best venues."

"This was the first time that either of us had eaten here. The restaurant is laid out so that you don't feel crowded by other diners and it had a nice ambiance. The menu was focused, but offered a well thought-out selection. And the specials sounded amazing. Our food was delicious and a good portion size. We also ordered a bottle of wine. Their wine list offered a good representation of styles and regions. Overall, we very much enjoyed Socca and would readily recommend it to friends."

"Last night we took my mother-in-law to Socca for her birthday dinner. The four of us had such a wonderful time and outstanding feast. We started out with cocktails at the bar (I love the bar area, wonderful ambiance, excellent drinks and really cool staff). We then moved into the dining room for our meal. Two of our party ordered steaks (prime cuts of Allen Brothers beef); the steaks were perfectly seasoned and fired and tasted better than what is served at high end steakhouses; it came with twice baked potatoes wrapped in smoked bacon. The rest of our party enjoyed the fish special that had just arrived that same day from Hawaii; so fresh and tasty. Socca is really a hidden gem and deserves much more accolades than it receives."

"My date and I came in for Restaurant Week. We had expected the food to be decently delicious and the wait staff to be attentive, to no avail. The food was mediocre despite the vibrant description that they had had on their prefix menu. The hangar steak dish was absolutely bland and had no taste. Probably the only decent dish we had was the dessert, which was the goat cheese gelato with topped coconut. The waiter never once came to our table to ask how we were doing; the only time we ever saw him was when he took our orders. It was to our surprise that another staff member who came to periodically take our plates was more attentive to our experience than the actual waiter himself. Our bill came out to be around $90 (tax and tip included)."

"I loved everything about socca's. The pork chop was 5 star, maybe the best I've ever had. My girlfriend loved her fish. The waiter was great, perfect timing on everything.
Socca's came highly recommended. I don't write reviews often, and I eat out at least twice a week. This was the most enjoyable dining experience I have had in months."
