Set in an array of Victorian rowhouses, Sassafraz has evolved through the decades to become a magical space in the heart of historic Yorkville. Located at the corner of Bellair and Cumberland, the little yellow house has "seen it all" from the early hippie movement of the 60"s to the lack of movement that comes from too much Bordeaux. Sassafraz offers an exceptional menu serving market-driven, French-inspired Canadian cuisine.

"I met a colleague for lunch and was reminded about what a terrific spot this is. Our food was tasty -- my friend had the entree with quinoa and I had the hazelnut encrusted scallops, we shared the 'donuts' for dessert. Service was exceptional."

"I loved the natural light that washed the dining room during our lunch. Every detail looked elegant without having an air of being overly thought out.
The food was delicious. I highly recommend the scallops! They were seared perfectly and worked well with everything else in the dish. The mushroom risotto was also delicious.
Service was wonderful, little added notes like oven fresh bread at the very beginning, ensuring that our glasses were never empty and serving us with complimentary chocolates at the end of our meal really stood out."

"We met friends from out of town at Sassafraz.
We were called by the restaurant to tell us that they had a large (wedding?) group in the dining room and our reservation was moved to the cafe. We loved the food, our waiter was outstanding (and I feel bad that we didn't get his name to give him a special accolade) but it was difficult to have a conversation with the piano player near by. He was good, don't get me wrong, but a dining room experience would have been preferred."

"I had the pleasure of eating in this establishment for the first time. the food was outstanding the service was impeccable and the restaurant was magical.I would like to put a special note out to the lovely lady manager I think her name was Birgett who was a pleasure to talk to, she was so warm and welcoming. I think that everyone should to come to this restaurant for the complete experience, it is worth every penny. Thanks to your team my night was memorable and one that I will tell all my friends about."

"I hosted 2 business guests from the States. It was a Monday nite so we got the best seat in the house (under the sky roof at the back). The bar tender, Hostess and waiting staff were all freindly and responsive. The food (we all had the scallops) was perfect. The wine list is OK but there is a dearth of entry level and mid priced offerings."

"We used our groupon at Sassafraz, and I was a little skeptical about how a nicer place like Sassafraz would handle groupons, but I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. They took the process very seriously, with special groupon menus, a person dedicated to collecting the groupon numbers, who very discretely came to each table, therefore avoiding teh awkward interaction with waiters, as you hand over the groupons. I have also found groupons at other restaurants to offer sub-par food, compared to ordering off the menu, however, this was not the case at sassafraz. My wife and I both had a medium-rare beef steak, it was absolutely perfect. Everything about the meal was well-done, including the 38.00/bottle wine special they were offering."

"Food was ok, bought a Groupon voucher for this restaurant, heard some good reviews for this restaurant & wanted to check out the service and food. Our orders were mixed up, not once but a few times. Food quality was ok and was saddened to learn that they removed the apple bread pudding for Groupon customers though they still had it available for "regular" menu customers. Overall, the restaurant was just ok...Don't think I'll ever be back, especially with family or friends. Would go somewhere, where I knew there was exceptional service & exceptional food quality all the time. Not sure if the food or service wasn't as great because this was a Groupon deal, but I figure if a Groupon deal isn't made to entice you to come back, then why bother."

"Food was delicious. I had black cod which was cooked perfectly with an interesting accompaniment of red rice, along with bok choy and a flavourful but not overpowering broth. My husband had the same less the rice and agreed that the cod was perfectly prepared. Petit fours for dessert were ok but nothing special. Service was excellent--prompt, friendly and efficient. We were seated along the water wall, as per my request. My only complaint is that there are too many tables crammed along this wall. You can easily hear the conversations of those beside you as you feel like you are dining with them! In fact, we struck up a conversation with the table beside us because we couldn't help but overhear them! 1-2 fewer tables would be great!"

"Great ambiance for dinner, servers were awesome. The appetizers were fantastic. Had the tempura and the beet salad (sooo good!). Ordered the Halibut for the main course which was just way too salty. My date couldn't even eat from her plate, however the server and the manager came to check in why she hadn't eaten her meal and when we explained the excessive salt, they were quick to offer a replacement dish of scallops which were very good. Saturday night looks like group night there! Very nice setting. I wouldn't go back for the food though, maybe just to impress a date!"

"The staff at Sassafraz took such great care of our group for lunch. There were two Celiac guests and they even had brought in special gluten free bread for our table that morning. Although the restaurant was quite empty, the service was perfect (we didn't feel bombarded with waiters, questions, etc.) and the food was outstanding. Although a more pricey restaurant, we absolutely felt like the food and service were worth the prices we paid."

"My husband and I used the Groupon that we had purchased for a three-course prix fixe dinner for two. We ordered a spinach salad and terrine for appetizers;, cornish hen and scallops with a side of hand-foraged wild mushrooms for entrees; and the creme brulee trio for dessert. Presentation was top-notch, very visually appealing; coupled with the dim-lit ambiance, it made for a very romantic atmosphere. The food was quite enjoyable however, nothing spectacular that would make French Canadian cuisine memorable. 'Ritzy' portions (i.e., regular-priced would have been considered Yorkville expensive for the modest-sized portions) but given that it was a Groupon, it was great. Service was FANTASTIC - super attentive, friendly and fast."

"Nicely located on Cumberland st in the heart of Yorkville. Had dinner there with my wife on a Thursday evening and the restaurant was full. I had asked for a quiet table and the hostess was very good to inform me before we sat down that the best she could do was a table along the wall - nivce of them to recall the request made a the time I booked the resevation.
Food was delicious - my wife had the scallops and I had the halibut with a very nice 2007 Fume Blanc from Peninsula Ridge (worth the try if you are getting tired of Chardonnay and Pinot Grigio).
Service was as expected (good) for such a restaurant."

"Was disappointed with the steak and the dessert that I had. Steak was over-cooked and dry. Dessert (creme brulee trio) was way too sweet and was not plated too nicely - some of the fruits toppled over."

"Purchased a groupon for a 3 course meal for two people. Choices came from the prix fixed menu which was practically the same as the regular menu. Food was decent, I've had better, but the ambiance and the service was so great that I would go back again!"

"We had a Groupon yet was treated like a normal guest (unlike some other restaurants). We ordered several drinks (including a hibiscus champagne which was lovely).
The steak and scallops were delicious and dessert (creme brulee and chocolate malt cake) were exceptional. I didn't love the Boar Terrine but my husband enjoyed it. The beet salad was also very good.
My only issue was that the bass that was offered on the Groupon menu was no longer available (unless you order off the regular menu). Instead it was halibut which I'm not a fan of. No big deal but a couple items were changed so it's good to be aware of that.
Our server was amazing and the manager popped by to say hi as well. We really enjoyed our meal!"

"The reason I have rated the food fair was because the steak that I have ordered medium was well done. I have mentioned to the waiter and a lady come after a couple of minutes and offered to change the steak for us, but we did not want to wait until the new steak is prepared so, we have refused. We have expected at least a glass of champagne on the house or something to show that they care about the inconvenience. The fact that they wanted to give us a new steak does not fulfill our needs since they wanted to replace an inconvenience (the steak too cooked for our taste) with another (to wait until a new one is done). They have to think more about how to deal with this kind of situation!"

"We used our 3 course Groupon on a Thursday evening, having stated we would in our OT reservation. We were, nevertheless, very politely and warmly welcomed, seated immediately, and discretely given a well presented Groupon menu and their full wine list - although the Groupon menu listed two reds and two whites, both sounded reasonably good and fairly priced. The dining room was not too full, and with well spaced tables, we could have nice quiet conversation. Enjoyed the well presented wild boar terrine and tempura starters, followed by the as-requested med-rare steak and tender halibut. Finished with tasty (and not overly sweet) brûlée trio sampler - just the right amount of dessert with their good brewed coffee. Would definitely revisit."

"Please note this review is based on the groupon 3 courses meal for 59 dollars for 2 persons. We had tempura, wild boar terrine, streak, scallop, donut and cream brûlée. Overall, the terrine and brûlée were my best dish. The terrine is made in house and it was well balance. The brûlée was cooked right and just enough sweet. The scallop, tempuea and streak are solid, but nothing crazy about it. The donut was just ok."
