The idea behind blue bird bistro is a simple one. Actually, it's more an ideal than an idea. An ideal that starts with a passion for organic food and our desire to share its benefits. A belief in pure, all natural foods unburdened of artificial additives and preservatives. A responsibility to promote sustainable foods and the positive impact that it makes on our world. And a commitment to work closely with local farmers who share in these ideals.

"We went Mother's Day. I had requested a quiet table, as hearing among the 80-somethings is an issue. Blue Bird was very accommodating, however the quietest area happened to be upstairs. Had I been aware of the climb, I would have prioritized "downstairs" instead of "quiet." Second floor is actually a flight and a half - no elevator - so be forewarned if stairs are a problem for your group. All food was great, except an egg and yam or sweet potato dish which was very undercooked (I think the order may have been turned in late). The very nice waitress took it off our bill. All in all, very nice experience, good food, and bright, cheerful, rustic, historical surroundings. Staff was great and accommodated us as best they could. A-"

"The food was good. It seemed we sat there a long time before giving our order & when the food came out 3 of the plates were fine, one had the wrong side item. The missing chips were quickly found & I got a bonus salad. Nice, layed-back place with good food. I wouldn't want to try to eat there if I was on a schedule, but the food was worth the wait."

"Fun overall atmosphere in an edgy area of downtown KC. Close to downtown events. Interesting menu with a lot of good choices. Good smaller plate selections. We experienced poor ventilation of kitchen fumes. Expect to carry the food odors with you on your clothes. All else very good!"

"Went with friends. Was surprised by only fair food, in light of longstanding good reputation. Had the Blue Bird salad: really overpriced and drowned in a much too sweet blueberry vinaigrette. My husband had a stuffed sweet potato: uninspired and again really overpriced for the ingredients in the dish. Won't be going back."

"The evening we went, our son was given a chipped plate for his salad without nuts as promised, when told this, the waitress brought a small cup of almonds without exchanging the plate out (poor server training). Then we seemed to wait a long time for our main course, and part of the food on my plate was cool (potatoes)instead of warm, my son's also. My husband's pork meal with pasta was extremely small and there was little pork in it. We were saddened by all this, and my husband does not want to ever go back. I like the idea of eating locally grown food and having vegetarian options, so this saddened me."

"I love the bohemian feel of this casual restaurant that was once a home. There are several different seating areas on both the upper and lower levels, quiet enough for private conversation. We were there for Sunday brunch. I loved the unusual addition of fresh/healthy ingredients to traditional menu items. I had sweet potato and granola pancakes. They were good but mild on flavor and would have benefited from a little spice. The biscuits were excellent, crispy on the outside, soft on the inside. I would definitely return, next time for dinner."

"Seemed tired, past its prime. We'd heard about this restaurant from several people though I think they probably hadn't been there in some time. What may have been hip and new some years back now seems overly familiar, even worn out. The stuffed red pepper my guest ordered had a medicinal flavor - just plain weird, something out of "The Vegetarian Epicure." Everything needs to be re-hab'd here, from the menu to the rooms to the views out the windows."

"Went to Sunday brunch - enjoyable. Menu is very descriptive - which helps if you wish to eat gluten-free / vegan / healthful. Sweet potato hash was a bit overcooked. The bison sausage benedict had a good taste. Blue bird salad was fairly good - but still needed something to make it stand out. Cocktails & wines good selection. Only major issue - we made a reservation, yet were seated in the bar area - at a wobbly table. Asked to be moved - we were moved to the front area. I noticed there were empty tables upstairs and in the back room - which would have been a nicer dining spot. Will try this place again for dinner - hopefully it will be good enough to add to our rotation."

"There is some romance to the place, but the service was most outstanding. Dining in early March did not offer the best menu, and it could have been better. Pass on the risotto as there is much to be desired on flavor. Instead, take up a glass a wine and chat with the waitress about other dinner options. "The Blue Bird is in an old pharmacy located in a classic old neighborhood off of the beaten path. It has been kept in a very origional stste using as much of the classic decor as possible. It is a good place for those who enjoy the products of the local farms and gardens. I did not mark it for kid friendly, not because a kid should not go in there, but it just seems more of an adult place to talk and enjoy your experience.

"The Blue Bird is our go-to place for dinner before concerts and events at Kauffman. My wife is the fastidious one in the group, always submitting the wait staff at any restaurant to a thorough inquiry of ingredients and prepared with a long list of modifications to most dishes she orders, and she has always been pleased. The food is good, interesting, and well prepared and we have always found the staff to be pleasant and accommodating, particularly to the fact that we have to head out by a particular time so as not to miss the start of the program (It helps that the restaurant is only 5 min away). Wine list is adequate and very reasonably priced, and they carry a very nice selection of high quality craft beers."

"The food was pretty good, but the service was atrocious. We waited for a long time before the hostess greeted or sat us. We had a reservation and ended up sitting in the bar area with the bartender serving us. She was unfriendly and an awful server, she only came to our table three times during the entire meal. My husband's burger came out without a side, which eventually showed up when he was finished with his meal. The food was good, but the service and rude staff completely ruined the experience."

"I absolutely loved the squash stuffed bell pepper and the chocolate tart we had for dessert. We had a nice romantic dinner by candle light. Our server seemed busy and unavailable for more than 10 minutes at a time when we needed a refill on water and to order drinks. After ordering a bloody mary, it had to be sent back because it tasted extremely briny. No replacement drink was ordered as the drink was said to have come from a pre-made batch and we had already gotten to the end of our meal by that time. Overall not a bad experience, I just see some room for improvement."

"Been there many times. Food is always amazing. Service is usually very good. This night it was awful. Simply awful. We got there and it took 10 minutes to get a glass of wine at the bar even though nobody was in front of us. The servers kept coming to get drinks for their tables but wohld not make eye contact to serve us. When we were seated we asked for bread. The waitress forgot. We had to ask for refills of water, wine, and bread. We were going to get dessert to go but the waitress never brought us the dessert menu we requested. "We had NEVER been to the Blue Bird Bistro before Valentine's Day, but was recommended by a friend of ours. We had been looking for an Organic Restaurant and this fit the bill. The time we went was super quiet. The waitress knew all about the menu and could help us with what to choose. :) I absolutely cannot wait to go again. My meal was fabulous and my husbands Turkey melt was MOIST and super flavorful!"

"The food was interesting and well prepared: Light handed with intense flavors. Wine list is quite good with delightful and solid French wines as well as others. Dessert portions were a little too much, they were well presented and quite good. The wait staff were attentive but not intrusive and very pleasant. We were there early in the dinner hour and while the downstairs seating was bustling and energetic, upstairs was quiet and intimate."

"We have been coming here for several years now and have had a wide range of experiences. Overall, the service has gone downhill with each visit- everyone is friendly, that is when they remember you are there. We had to get up from the table 3+ times during our meal to ask for service or remind them of forgotten items. Not a great set-up for young children, as they do not supply highchairs (or maybe they just forgot it, too). Food has always been excellent, with the exception being when we came in a group of 5 and most of it was luke warm at best. I am not sure if I will be able to convince my Husband to return at this point :( I hope the kinks get worked out soon!"

"We have been going to this restaurant for years but were very disappointed in the service this time. The food was great, as usual, but the service was ridiculous...slow, the server didn't know anything about the choices and had no idea of our drink orders...nothing was right. "After hearing so many great things about BBB, we used Restaurant Week as an excuse to try it out. So glad we did! Generous portions, careful attention to ingredients and different dietary choices, and a charming, cozy, place made for a wonderful lunch. I had the carrot soup, which was very different but good. The Golabka was delicious, and both the orange cake and almond cake were great dessert choices. Loved the menu variety. Can't wait to go back.
Another plus--it's right next door to Fervere. We went there on a Thursday lunch and in addition to having a great meal, we were able to purchase a few loaves of the most delicious bread I've ever had!"

"My husband and I went there on the last night of the Kansas City Restaurant week. We had a reservation and we seated in a timely manner. "This is the second time I have come here. The servers are always very nice but the overall service is always extremely slow. Maybe not seating more than what the kitchen can manage can fix that.
