"I had not been to Cafe Soluna in a year or so. My family came in to town to see Wicked and wanted a recomendation. I immediately thought of Soluna and told the family I had always enjoyed my dining experiences there. We were not disappointed. I had trout ( farmed ) and others had the lamb and risotto with favorable comments. In order to have me rate Soluna a bit higher, they would have to improve their ice cream flavors and taste ( not the finest ) and offer a more generous pour."

"The food was good. However, the serving of a $13 glass of wine was really small, particularly when the glas of wine served on the table next to ours, was 50% fuller... The inside of the restaurant is somewhat faded and dingy."

"In previous Ballet seasons we patronized Soluna and were pleased with the meal. This time we found the dinner disappointing. The starters were well done, however the steamed yellowtail main course was overcooked and I suspect reheated; the accompanying vegetables were good. We arrived at 6.15pm and intended to go to the ballet. Service was very slow causing us anxiety about making the deadline.
We had vouchers as subscribers to the SF Ballet for a complimentary dessert with starters and main course. When we ordered dessert we were informed that only one per table was allowed and subsequently charged for the second one. We pointed out that this was not what was stated on the vouchers; our waiter said that this was restaurant policy."

"The environment was perfect: a nice but not fancy meal before the symphony. The small plates were great, particularly the mussels. Really fantastic. The entree's....not so. We had to have one reheated since it was quite tepid by the time it arrived at our table. They were kind enough to comp that dish (and while I won't be re-ordering that dish in particular, this gesture does encourage me to try this place again.) I'd return for drinks and small plates certainly."

"We visited Soluna based on website reviews, before going to the theater. Pretty busy place, lots of folks at/around the bar and at high-top tables, but the dining area is farther back. We were politely greeted by a young lady with a nose ring - not particularly appetizing, but we were promptly seated. The staff was helpful and attentive without being intrusive. The salad was plentiful and the cheese delicious! Oysters were - well, they're oysters. Fresh, nicely presented. Our entrees were the steelhead - very nicely prepared, and the rack of lamb, which was a bit fatty, but again, nicely presented and tasty. Desserts were good, but not remarkable. This is a good place for pre-theater; in and out in about 90 minutes. Nice evening."

"Soluna is very convenient to the War Memorial Opera House, so one of the stars is simply for that. For those of us in the B&T crowd, it's essential to find a dining spot that allows you to park once, get dinner and walk to the Opera House.

We had a 5:30 reservation, made through OpenTable. Despite that, we were seated at a high table in bar. Not the most comfortable way to have a two-hour meal, so we should probably requested a regular table when we arrived.

Service was high quality (informative, attentive), but not always prompt. When we finally mentioned that we needed to wrap up by 7:30, service got a little peppier. I hate to carp too much, because once we mentioned these things, the servers made noticeable efforts to address our"

"Awesome food, awesome service. Would visit again. The only reason this location got a 4 instead of a 5 was thay the menu selection was somewhat limited. "We chose Soluna after finding it on the Orpheum website. It has a great location, within walking distance of the Theatre. We were seated promptly, and the service was friendly and efficient. The food was fabulous!! From the salad to the dessert, everything was fresh, well presented, unique and flavorful. The highlight was a Short Rib Ravioli in an orange pecan browned butter sauce, a dish my friend ordered, and I couldn't stop stealing bites from. We will definately be returning next time we visit the Orpheum!"

"If you're headed to the Orpheum, this is an ideal pre-show dining spot (show your ticket & receive a complimentary dessert). Allow plenty of time, however--our party of four was seated a bit before 6 and we left at 7:40. Service was friendly albeit a bit desultory as time went on. The "Little Gems" salad was a wonderful if somewhat pricey starter--lovely greens and delightfully unique dressing w/a bit of spicy hotness. Entrees (rib eye, steelhead, ravioli) were attractively presented and delicious, but our bottle of Pinot was at least 10º too warm. In the future, we would skip the desserts (well, aside from the freebie). We will definitely look forward to a return visit."

"I haven't been to Soluna in a couple of years. The food has made a drastic change. I did feel it was better in the past. It was still a very nice meal but, not up to the standard they held previously. I will try them again since my meal was something special for Valentines day. Maybe the standard menu is better. "The food was very good but every time I visit here, the service is slow. We had a reservation but walk ins who came in after us were seated and served first. It took 10 minutes to get anything I asked for (juice, ketchup) even though it wasn't crowded. If you go, then go with enough time for slow service not to affect you."

"Three of us met for dinner before a show at the Orpheum theater, located 3 blocks away.
I was happy to have 6:30PM reservations, thank you Open Table, since the restaurant filled up quickly. Our server was attentive to our needs, especially the timing to get us to the show on time. We each ordered different entrees: lamb shank; pumpkin ravioli; ahi tuna. All were delicious! The entrees are filling. One diner added a salad. Another ordered the prix fixe meal and realized she would have been just as satisfied with just the entree. All in all, a wonderful dining experience. We will return."

"A great place to eat. The ambiance was great. The food was superb. I loved the wine selection for the pairing menu. I'm not a salad eater but I am now after tasting the Pine nuts in your salad. I have eaten at many fine restaurants before and I rate the food a Soluna cafe a 10 out of 10.

The service was fantastic. The waitress knew we had a show to go to and served the food in good time for us to make it to the show in plenty of time. I highly recommend everyone to try this restaurant atleast once."

"This was my first time back to Soluna in a few years, and I am pleased to note that the experience was still a positive one. Although a few of us could have used a little more light to read the menu, we managed well enough. The menu, although small, had enough options for all the tastes and preferences in our group. All of us were pleased with what we ordered and had enough to share a little taste with those who ordered something else. We mentioned to our server that we were heading to the theatre, so she kept us on target in terms of time. However, some of those who brought us food seemed not to know who had ordered what...not a big deal, but it did create some confusion. All in all, this is a very nice place to have a good meal."

"We went to Soluna before seeing WICKED on 2/16/09. I was just looking for a nice restaurant within walking distance to the Orpheum theater and Soluna was recommended by a friend who had recently been there. My wife is really picky when it comes to food so I was worried that Soluna might not fit the bill if it was in any way a tourist trap. Fortunately, my worries were unfounded. While the seating at Soluna wasn't the most comfortable, the restaurant is excellent in most other regards. We had the spinach salad and macaroni and cheese for starters, and then split the Mahi Mahi as an entree. All were delicious and very well-presented. The freshly baked bread is also fantastic. Cool restaurant, and excellent service as well."

"Everything was fine - very professional, good food; I just wish there had been more dessert choices on the menu as none of the three items appealed to either myself or the person I was with (and we both love dessert!). "I had dined here last year and found the current menu drastically reduced of choices. A party of 5, clearly there for dinner but were not allowed to order apps from the bar menu. Service was attentive when we arrived (5:30) but slowed to near stand still as the restaurant filled. Waited 20 mins for the check. Food was pretty good and rather creative - we had a variety, steak, mussels, mac & cheese, brussel sprouts with bacon (yum!). That said, with so many great choices in SF we probably would not return due to the service and limited menu choices (one group, one evening and we've had just about everything)."

"While the food was incredible, the service was pretty bad.
Problems:
We were seated about 15 minutes late (a problem that night since we had theater tix).
We had to ask twice for our credit card from the bar where we opened a tab while waiting for our table.
Though we asked for bread when we ordered, we had to ask for it twice--it didn't come until after those next to us got theirs and after our appetizers arrived (15 minutes into dinner)!
We had to ask for silverware (who doesn't bring a spoon out when you order soup)?

If we didn't have theater tix, this probably wouldn't have been so annoying, but still, it was pretty bad."

"We had tickets to Wicked, so we decided to go to Soluna since it's right around the corner. The food was great, the service was good but a little inattentive, and since they knew we had tickets to the show they were good about getting our food to us. We also got a free dessert with our tickets, which was an added bonus. All in all, 4 out of 5, which is pretty good. Would have been 5 if our server had been a bit more attentive (drinks were running dry more times than not)."

"The hostess and the bartender were attentive, engaged and very helpful. Our waiter was not very attentive and seemed overwhelmed by the number of tables that he had to service. The kitchen also seemed overwhelmed as we were not served our meals simultaneously. Two of the four of us dined for about 5-10 minutes before the other two entrees were brought out from the kitchen. Overall, it was a pleasant experience, the view of the Civic Center was gorgeous as night fell and we were a mere three blocks from the Orpheum Theater where we attended a play following our meal."

"Close to the Orpheum theater in an area that has a dearth of restaurants, the Soluna Cafe was a good place for pre-theater dining. Extensive happy hour/bar menu in 1/2 the space;dining menu in the other part. Lighting was dark making reading the menu difficult. A complementary amuse boche was nice. Husband's steak and my lamb shank were well prepared and tasty. Overall the plates were heavy though - other than 2 small undercooked carrots (crunchy rather than firm), it was all meat & starch- more vegetable would balance the plate. We usually share a dessert, but none appealed. Again options too heavy. Fruit tart/crisp would've been nice. Service fair, nice server but many mistakes were made including charges for drinks not ordered."

"Food was not as good as it should have been for the price. The ingredients were good but the flavors were nothing special. The mahi-mahi was just okay and the fall ratatouille was almost flavorless and a smidge undercooked. The fried chicken was decent, the coating good, and the portion plentiful but nothing overly special. Location is good, for symphony, opera, or ballet so that is the plus. The service was attentive but interestingly, neither of the 2 servers at our table ever asked if we had a curtain which is the norm for restaurants in the area. We paced ourselves which was fine."

"We enjoyed the vibrant bar scene and the art on the walls. Salad was good, but my winter vegetable ratatouille was boring - far inferior to typical ratatouilles. We'd go again, but be more careful in ordering from the rather limited menu. It is well-located for Orpheum Theater and other Civic Center venues."

"Had terrific experience pre-symphony. Sat at casual table in bar, which was fine. One of best meals we've had in Civic Center area. Lamb shank was very good, but star of show was the pumpkin ravioli -- absolutely a don't miss. Prices are moderate and fair for the area. Service was somewhat harried, but it was a busy time and everyone was pleasant and helpful. Definitely will go again."

"When I confirmed our reservation Thurs., I asked to have our party size increased to 6 people. When we got there, the table was only for 4, so we had to wait until a party vacated a table so that we could sit. During this time, we ordered drinks from the bar, but they didn't arrive for awhile. Our waitress was slow about bringing basics like water & bread. But when dinner arrived, it was all almost worth it. Being mostly vegetarian, we had a couple of entrees, but many of us had appetizers and sides. The chef kindly removed bacon, pancetta, etc. for us. Every dish we had was stunning. We had symphony tickets, so b/c of the wait, sadly, we couldn't try dessert. I'm not sure we'll chance Soluna again, but if we do it's b/c of the food!"

"lukewarm coffee and cappacinos started the afternoon. Croque monseur was basically on unwieldy and inappropriate texas toast, way too enormous to house the 1-2 thin slices of ham . COLD mustard based sauce had been put on with a silly 80's squeeze bottle decoration drizzled across the classic sandwich. I dont mind reinterpretations but nothing hit on any cylinders in terms of reinterpretation...sloppy, lack of attention, uncaring and undelicious.
fries were very good. other dishes really fell short as well lamb hash really greasy and spinach salad way overdressed. again, two chicken sandwiches were on huge pieces of bread."

"Soluna is a particularly good find in an area of the City that needs more good restaurants. It is only a couple of blocks from the Orpheum, and that's why we tried it. After our good experience we agreed that we'd return any time, not just after a night at the theater. I had a superb Mahi Mahi with mango and my wife had delicious pumpkin raviolis. The wine list is brief, but we found a bottle that suited. It's notable that the waitress offered us a taste of the wine while we were making our choice. It made ordering the bottle an easy choice. The service was much better than average. I felt that the staff was monitoring our table, but not hovering. That's how it should be. In summary, I highly recommend this restaurant!"

"My wife and I had dinner reservations on Friday night at 6:15 so we could make it to the Orpheum for a 8:00 show and the babysitter was a half hour late and traffic was horrible. The restaurant called our house at 6:30 and ended up talking with the babysitter and said they would hold our table for us. We arrived close to 7:00 and were immediately seated and waited upon. We did not have time for the multi course meals and instead ordered several small plates and a large plate and despite our hurry we never felt rushed. We were impressed with each of the plates. Needless to say we had a great dining experience and made it to the show with time to spare."

"I would return again whenever I have an evening in the Civic Center area. The menu is quite nice. The Brussel Sprouts and Bacon DELISH. The "little gem" Caesar salad excellent.

"My wife and I chose Soluna for it's proximity to the Orpheum theatre, as we were attendin a show that evening and it is only a block from there. "We had a late Sunday Brunch. The restaurant had only a few tables, but the food took a very long time to produce. Very good bloody mary, but any sense of food quality was lost in haphazard production: Spinach Salad so overdressed that it was unedible, Croque Monsieur that was simply an American-style Grilled Ham & Cheese, and decent fries, although neither of us could detect any of the truffle flavor listed on the menu.

Probably a great place for a glass of wine after work, but I would hesitate to return to the restaurant."

"My five cousins and I had a girls night out on a Saturday. The food was wonderful, prompt and hot. We all tasted each others dishes and the phrase, "Oh my God, that's incredible" were used more often than not.
The wait staff was efficient and friendly, even though we were probably making a bit more noise than they're used too!
The restaurant is smallish and the decor is classy so I can see this being the perfect spot for romantic meal.
We will most definitely be returning."

"We were seeing the 8pm showing of Wicked and wanted a meal that was fun and good and easy and not so expensive that we felt taken. We parked in Civic Center parking and walked less than 1 block to Soluna Cafe. No wait at all. Super friendly. We were a party of 6, 3 moms and 3 daughters. Pumpkin Ravioli was spectacular. Somewhat sweet with pinenuts and spinach. Caesar I split with my daughter but shouldn't have as it's small. Great bottle of cabernet. Not a large food or wine list, but everything you could want was there. Girls had mac and cheese and desserts. Tea/coffee to go. Walked 2 blocks to the Opheium Theatre...was a perfect evening."

Every dish was beautiful, balanced, well seasoned and exciting. Totally surprised how nice the food was. I did not expect such nice food from a place with a "cafe" in the name."

"Great place to go before theater or concert. For me menu is a bit limited, but still found something I was interested in eating. My wife had pumpkin ravioli which she thought best ever. I must give Soluna big time credit for causing me to eat Brussel sprouts, which I do not eat ever. They grill them somehow and I was amazed that they were at least decent. Probably much better than decent, but remember I hate B. sprouts!!! Dessert was excellent, Service was absolutely impeccable. If you've not been here before, you should definitely give it a try."

"Dinner before the show was very nice. Not the biggest menu in the world, but the food was very good. Delicious, moist braised lamb on top of a really good risotto with a side of excellent mashed sweet potatoes (not yams). The wine list is limited. The service was very good, unobtrusive. The bartender and hostess both greeted us and offered to sit us right away. We chose to have a drink at the bar first, and found the staff and atmosphere very friendly and accomodating. Once seated, the food portions were moderate and delicious, served quickly and hot. We especially enjoyed the truffle fries and the dipping sauces. All in all a good experience and a place we would venture again when going to the Orpheum."

"Service could be more attentive. We had to ask for bread, and ask for coffee refills. The main course should have been served with the salad, since the person ordering salad was having it as her main course. We were served with the wine menu instead of the dessert menu and had a long wait to get the correct menu. The dessert choices were a bit odd, since it's cold outside, yet there were only cold desserts like cheesecake and ice cream. No pie or cake on the menu, and it was my birthday, but no special treatment was given me although I had mentioned it in my reservation. The mahi-mahi had too much pepper, but it was a generous portion and presented beautifully. The pumpkin ravioli is wonderful."

"This was my 2nd time at Soluna, but this visit was a little disappointing. We had 6:15 reservations -- plenty of time to get to the theatre -- but we weren't seated until almost 6:45 so we didn't have time to partake of the nice $38 prix fix menu. Our dinner, while delicious, also took too long coming out of the kitchen. The manager and hostess, both apologetic and nice, didn't offer to comp our drinks or appetizers, which I thought would have been appropriate. One other minor criticism: the bartender was rude and didn't even acknowledge us waiting at the bar (we were the only ones there!) for at least five minutes.

I really like the food and vibe at this restaurant and intend to try again the next time we have theatre tickets."

"This place recently got a new chef that is off the chain! He's doing an incredible job with the menu. If you've been here in the past it's worth it that you try it again. "One of a precious few decent eateries near the Orpheum in SF within easy walking distance. Food was on the expensive side, but pretty good. "The food was great and we had no issues with the service or service speed. It was like they had paid attention to the previous reviews about slow service and were actively working to improve -- and if so, then bravo, I really like places that take criticism from patrons and use it to improve.

Regarding the food, I had the Lamb Shank with Blue Cheese Risotto and it was rich and filling with a great balance of flavor. My wife had the Pecan Crusted Chicken with Cranberry-Poblano Relish and it too was great and well balanced. My adult son had the steak with Potato Puffs and he cleaned his plate.

Desert was the chocolate pretzels and the truffle sampler, which was so good we ordered another to take home (and it came quickly too). Try it"

"Service was AWFUL. We had a reservation, but the hostess still tried to seat at at one of the "barstool" tables in front, even though there were regular tables open in the back.

The waiter acted like he didn't know we had a reservation. The wine we ordered was not served with either the starter OR the main dish. We had to ask TWO servers, and then we still waited about 10 minutes. By then, we were halfway through our main course. All this time our waiter and the other waiter we asked were going back and forth serving other people.

The desert we ordered also took a long time to be served."

"Soluna restaurant was a great surprise for our party of four. This is our first time in this restaurant. The ambiance was great. The recommended wine Hass from Napa was excellent. We learned that the chef is a new one and the plates that he was preparing were from his predecessor. By the way, each of us ordered a different main course and all of them were exquisite. I hope that the ‘new’ chef thanks the previous chef and continue to add to the menu rather than delete. In summary, the service level was high. I will return again!!!"

"The food was tasty but every aspect of the service was very disappointing. Even though I reserved a table a month in advance, they tried to seat us in the bar. We had to ask 4 times to get some bread. We had to ask for water refills. The chairback was wet. The waiter seemed to be in a daze. The next table over experienced similar difficulties - they sent back a bottle of wine because it was so late in arriving. "The service was extremely slow;it took 20 minutes for the waitress to attend to us. Appetizers arrived at 40 minutes and one of the items was simply house fries. About tthe enrees, the pork chop was tasty; however, the tombo was very dry and bland and the crab stuffed sole was barely warm. The table next to ours arrived around the same time but did no get their entrees an hour into dinner service. "The food was really good. The service was another story. We had to wait over an hour for our three meals to be delivered. The server was very nice and attentive it was just that for whatever reason, the food took forever to come. We went there before a show at the Orpheum and luckily I read other reviews on Opentable and knew that the service could take a long time and therefore made the reservation at 5:30 for an 8:00 show.
