Il Capriccio serves a constantly changing Northern Italian menu featuring local products with an award winning Italian wine and Grappa list. Though long considered a local secret, Il Capriccio has been the number one Northern Italian restaurant in Zagat's for the past seven years. The wine list has been featured in Decanter, Sante, Wine & Spirits and Stuff. The same menu is served in the Bar. We like to serve great food and great wine in a comfortable setting.

"Il Capriccio is one of our favorite restaurants! The food and the service are both outstanding! The mushroom soup was superb! The soft shell crabs were amazing! The veal chop special was delicious! It came with great seasonal vegetables! The fois gras was exceptional and so was the tuna tartare! The chocolate dessert and the lemon mousse were scrumptious! We highly recommend this restaurant!"

"We eat at Il Capriccio about once a month or so, and always like it. This time, it was not quite up to par. In terms of menu design, the soft shelled craps were loaded down with sliced onions, so much so that you could not even see them on the plate. They were good themselves, but only when we moved the onions off to the side. In terms of execution, the seafood rice dish was overcooked (as usually is the case outside of Italy, but I expected better from Il Capriccio). Seafood was okay and plentiful, but lost a lot of its punch in the mushy rice."

"5 star food but the place is cramped. Tables too close to each other. It is not intimate dining when you hear and can't tune out all the conversations surrounding you. We were sandwiched between 2 tables of diametrically opposed political conversations based on current news and it was painful. The plus is that the food was delicious and service was excellent. Great hostess and wait staff. Just not a place for those who mind tight quarters or don't like to listen to other conversations instead of holding their own."

If you like wine, Jason is always ready to help you find something you will love or if you like to experiment, he will find you something fun and unusual. Stop by the bar and have a drink with Linda. "Very good meal, great service. Only question mark is we had a 6:30 week night res for 2 and they sat us in room that was empty - 15 minutes later another couple came in and they sat them right next to us in a still empty room - why they had to crowd the only 4 people in the room on top of each other is unclear as when we left the room at 8 it still had space in it. But food and service terrific - go and enjoy."

"It was one of those days when I asked my husband, "Can we go eat Richie's food tonight?" Only expecting to get an entree and glass of wine, the evening's menu enticed us to try some other tastes of Spring. Asparagus and mushroom salad with poached egg was warm and silky with a nice earthiness. I was excited to see veal carpaccio and the grilled octopus and squid on warm garbanzo puree. I think the later was my favorite thing that we ate. One thing I love about Il Capriccio's menu aside from the seasonal ingredients, is the reliable items that I've come to crave (I'm sure I'm not alone): striped bass or cod, with white wine and grape tomatoes, linguine bolognese, wild boar sausage to name a few. I had the fish, and wine, and was very happy!"

"I've been going to Il'Capriccio for years. It is always consistently delicious... not just good. The menu changes regularly but staples, like the mushroom soufflé; mussel's in white wine sauce; and their fabulous bolognese sauce, are always available. The staff is attentive and friendly. "We were pleased with every facet of our interaction. Upon arrival, we were warmly greeted and seated with no wait. Our alcoved table afforded just the right amount of privacy without feeling isolated: the 1/2 glass walls allowed us to see and flag our wait staff, but kept our conversation and the conversations of other tables private. The food was simply delicious. We loved the shaved artichoke salad, seared foie gras and gravlax/ striped bass crudo. Thumbs up on the night's special ribeye steak, veal tenderloin, lamb chops and porcini mushroom risotto. Finally, kudos to the wait staff. Our waitress was patient to those who had endless questions and served us with a warm demeanor. Appetizers and entrees were perfectly paced. We'll be back!"

"After such great reviews we read and Positive comments from friends and family we were excited to visit Il Capriccio. The service was great, but the food must have been off that night. We were there to celebrate my moms birthday and our table, the ambience, and the service was great for the group of 6 of us to celebrate the occasion. However, the main dishes we ordered were a bit of a disappointment. My mom and I each got the shrimp and sundried tomato linguine. We thought the dish was way too salty and the pasta was overcooked and did not taste homemade to me, which I would have expected. The bolognese and risotto, got good marks from the other guests, but below expectations for price and hype."

"The waitress got a couple of our orders incorrect and gave us the incorrect one to eat while we waited for the other to cook. Man at a table behind us had his chair pushed out in the aisle so I pushed mine as close to the table as possible and still was bumped into by wait staff."

"We visited Il Capriccio for the first time this past Friday and were pleasantly surprised. The service was fantastic and the food was easily on par with some of the best restaurants in the North End. The décor of the restaurant seemed a little dated and we weren't quite sure why the room we were in was walled off in glass (perhaps for banquet purposes). But, décor issues aside, this was a very good meal. We will definitely be back in the future"

"First visit to Il Capriccio, but certainly not my last. Our table of six ordered 3 appetizers, 1 salad, 6 entrees, 2 desserts, and 1 bottle of wine and every single taste was exceptional! The tuna tartare melted in my mouth, calamari was divine, sausage-stuffed pepper was reported as delicious. The artichoke salad was gorgeous and chockful of goodies. The group ordered 2 veal medallions, 2 soft-shell crabs, the cod, and swordfish. No one was disappointed in the least! If I was pressed to select my favorite of all, it would have to be the tuna tartare. I highly recommend this restaurant!"

"I'm typically not one to take the time to write a review about a restaurant, but my experience at Il Capriccio was so outstanding that I was compelled to. The service was impeccable and the wait staff is personable and very helpful in choosing from their wide variety of Italian delicacies. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone who enjoys large portions at fair prices or just loves to eat amazing food. We started with mussels and the mushroom soufflé (literally to die for) and finished with the duck and swordfish. It was cooked perfectly and they were beyond gracious in our request to change our side dishes. Thanks for the incredible dinner, and I will be back as soon as I'm in the area!"

"I loved the service, attentive but not overbearing. My food was excellent as was my wife's food although she wished she had ordered the scollops. The wine I had was terrific. We were in a small room that was a little noisy and cramped. I would pick the larger room in the front of the restaurant next time. Other than that, it was a great evening."

"We started with a great glass of wine recommended by the waiter. A few of us started with tuna tartar w/ avocado & scallions. It was delicious, great flavors with different textures. Then we had a few different salads and everybody enjoyed their choice. I had a small plate of Spaghetti Bolognese. It really good but a little full at that point so I took it home and enjoyed it today for lunch. There was a mix up in the order and the waiter was very apologetic and gracious. He sent free desserts to the table and we also had decaf cappuccino to finish. It was a really nice meal and great ambiance. The waiter checked in on us but was not overbearing. We feel that Il Capriccio is consistently excellent with interesting food."

"On this evening we started with two appetizers, the Tuna Tartare, Avocado, Shaved Fennel and House Chips and also the Roasted Holland Pepper Stuffed with Wild Boar Sausage. Both were excellent. It had been a few years since I last had their Fettuccine Bolognese and after tasting it wondered why I hadn't ordered more frequently on my other visits. My wife had the Roast Duckling with Mustard, Capers, Roast Peppers and Roast Polenta. If you want to know what a really good duck dish is, try this dish. You'll be heard pressed to find another place that can serve a better duck dish. Once again we trusted Jason to make a wine selection for us and delighted us again with an excellent choice at a reasonable price."

"What keeps us coming back to Il Capriccio? EVERYTHING! How about starting with Souffle di Porcini, Veal Carpaccio with Caper Sauce & Steamed Mussels; an amazing mix of textures and flavors and don't forget bread to soak up every last drop of the delicious sauces left behind. This is just the start of a dining experience you too will want to return to over & over again. The hostess & wait staff make you feel special; as if you were the only diners. You will see the same faces of staff year after year as it's not only the food which makes you want to return, it's the employees, cooks, chef and owner, Richie Barron, who continuously comes out to mingle with guests of the restaurant."

"This was probably our 10th time in 15 years. We often come for a special occasion and normally LOVE/rave about the food. We were very disappointed and will likely not return. First I noticed that the appetizer I had last year (T. Tartare in April 2012) was on the menu again (it was there in May too). That concerned me as I don't normally see them repeat the exact same preparation. I got the mussels, they were large, cooked perfectly, but the broth had zero taste. My husband said his foie gras was good (not great). My scallops were good; monkfish was overcooked/dry. Husband's duck looked boring, he said it was "fine"/(not great). Bread is always very good, service was very good. Overall underwhelmed by the flavors. Sad.."

"This was my first time here. My best friend and I love to try new restaurants and boy, were we glad we found this one! It was amazing. The wine list was extensive and the owner helped us pick a perfect wine which we very much enjoyed. Our waiter was just great. Can't say enough about what a lovely evening. A bit pricey but I can't wait to go back. Next time with my husband so he can pay!"

3. the striped sea bass which was a special that night
4. warm chocolate molten cake

I was disappointed with Organic Giannone Chicken “Schnitzel”, Fried Egg, Lemon, White Wine, Sage and Herbed Spaetzle I order this every time I go and was surprised that it didn't meet their usual standard of excellence."
