"Circa 1886 was outstanding. We chose to eat there on a night when they offered a three course price fixed menu. In addition they included a small appetizer which was delicious. The service was attentive and friendly. In addition, the inn offered us a look around and a view from the 4th floor cupola. Outstanding."

"Drafty table, very loud guests across the room, very expensive, overrated!!! not a 10/10 in our book:( The best parts were the cauliflour puree soup, the bread and the desserts. The salmon special was really fair...salmon itself was very good, but the sides were interesting and not very good. The porkchop was very delicious."

"Dined at Circa 1886 several years ago and were not impressed. Decided to give it another try. On this visit we had a much better table location and the food was much better. Both first course selections were wonderful and full of flavor. Main course was very good and dessert was just right. Would have given the noise level a "guiet" except, I guess because of the age of building, the floors creaked a lot as diners and wait staff walked by our table."

"This is a very special place with very special people. Food exceeded our wildest expectations with the chef sending out a few wonderful "on the house" creations, one of which was one of the absolutely best sashimi type scallop cerviche I have ever had, and this would include places like Nobu in NY. My entree was a most delicious triggerfish, my wife loved her choice of entree, but especially the banana foster souffle desert! Service was impeccable, and it is difficult to imagine a more pleasant surrounding for a lovely evening of fine food with a warm and charming ambiance. A tour of the Wentworth mansion after dinner added a special treat with a 360 view from the widows walk above the 4th floor, to view Charleston's night time beauty."

"We took advantage of Restaurant "Week" to have a wonderful "3 for $30" meal. This allowed us to bring our son and his friend who were visiting from out of town. The food was very good indeed, and we were very comfortable and cozy on a cold, rainy night. I love how the waiters come together to present the dishes all at one time to each person at the table: very nice touch. The wine selection was also very good, BUT VERY PRICEY. Whatever the caliber of the restaurant, one ought to be able to find more than one or two wines under $50 in a category, or a single glass for under $12."

"This was a dining experience that few should miss while in Charleston. We were there at night so could not absorb the surrounding area, but the restaurant is nestled in the area of the mansion. The food was excellent, served in a professional manner with servers who were well-trained. We had different desserts, but one to die for is the Panna Cotta. The flourless chocolate cake was good, but not as delicious as the Panna Cotta. One of our guests had the banana fritters, but they were very crispy and the taste of the banana was lost. As often as we return, 1886 will be on our "must" list to visit."

"Ambiance could be great but we were seated just inside the door, so there was a lot of foot traffic and cold air as the door opened/closed.
Service started out very poor as we were told Peter would be right over and then we sat and waited for 10 - 15 min before we even received our menus or water. Finally, John came over and apologized that he had a private party that had kept him busy. Very confusing and disorganized for the amount of money we spent, but service picked up after that and was fine. We actually discussed walking out before sticking out and waiting to be served."

"This is the place if you want to get away from the crowds. Parking is terrible. The entance was hard to find. I had the pork chop. The butcher would be unhappy to see his meat overcooked that much. "Personally, I found the food to be delicious and artfully prepared. I attended for restaurant week 2010, and the food was reasonably priced, but what I enjoyed the most was the service and the atmosphere. My dish was the antelope loin, and although I expected it to resemble the taste of kangaroo, it did not have quite the flavor that a kangaroo loin had, but it was very good nonetheless. I thought the sides garnished the dish very well and added that great artistic flair."

"This was our first visit to Circa 1886 and I found it very enjoyable. Food quality and preparation on this night was on par with the other excellent restaurants in town, Grill 225 and The Oak come readily to mind. The service was excellent as well. "We ate at Circa as part of restaurant week. We had a phenomenal meal at a bargain price. Cheers to Circa for not downgrading the meals. We both had the antelope which is normally a $35 entree. All 3 courses were delightful. The service was fantastic. I especially like how the hot rolls are presented. the only thing I noticed that was surprising was a lack of a dress code. "Most enjoyable. The calm and unsensational welcome and service gave this restaurant a pleasing formality without sacrificing warmth. All dishes served to us were well prepared with good quality ingredients, and an eye for presentation. The wine list was impressive, and the option to buy from a select list by the glass ideal.

The driving instructions were fallible, in an unlit and poorly signed sector of town. A clear, detailed map should be published. The restaurant's own signage was inadequate."

"My husband and I booked this restaurant as our New Year's Eve eve meal, since we couldn't get in on NY's Eve. The whole meal experience was fantastic! The menu selection was terrific and the wait staff was expert in every way; our waiter, John, even helped us pair our wine (from an excellent list). The food was exceptional--we tried 2 house specials, the antelope entree and the bananas foster dessert. All our courses were great, but the pastry chef is genious--the banana pudding ice cream was phenominal. The restaurant is beautiful, comfortable, classicly elegant, but also cozy. Re: prices, they offer an unbelievable 3-course special, a 5-course tasting w/ or w/o wine pairings and a la carte pricing-terrific value for the prices!!!"

"We dined at Circa 1886 with a small reunion group and had an excellent experience. The setting, a square (3x3) table made for a closeness that brought all 12 of the party together. The menu offered a varied selection and the waiter was very forthright with recommendations. The food was served efficiently and eloquently. The meal presentation was superb and most importantly the quality was excellent. We'll all have favorable memories of our night at Circa 1886."

"So, as my ratings indicate, the food and the ambiance were quite enjoyable, but the service truly brought everything down. I don't like to sit at a table and wait 15 minutes for menus, let alone drink orders. However, it was an indication of things to come. The amazing part was that they really weren't that busy, while help staff appeared to be abudant. What were they doing?!"
