About Us: The House at Secret Garden, a Casual American Eatery located under the shadow of South Mountain. Housed in a restored 1929 Spanish mansion, the restaurant offers a lively, modern and sophisticated atmosphere. A fresh, local menu was designed for dinner with favorites such as Sweet Potato Planks, Smoked Brisket Sandwiches, Shrimp and Grits, and Hand Made Seasonal Pastas. Guests can dine in the barrel-ceilinged dining room, enjoy small bites on the patio, or cocktails under the sprawling carob tree.

"We were celebrating a special occasion and selected this restaurant because of the reviews and the menu. The inside is lovely. We were there early so it was not very crowded. Service was excellent. I enjoyed the arancini balls, crispy on the outside and moist and flavorful on the inside. The sauce was great for dunking the bread from the grilled romaine salad. My friend has the shrimp and grits which was a little on the skimpy side although it tasty very good. For desert we asked to sit on the patio outside which was also beautiful and relaxing. They did not seem to remember it was a special occasion as no mention was made of it. All in all a lovely evening."

"We had a wonderful meal, everything was fresh and nicely crafted. Not an extensive menu, because everything is predicated on what the chef can personally make with the ingredients that are available fresh and local. Service was amazing, the wine list is good, and prices were more than reasonable."

"Lush, tranquil,romantic......food for the soul. The fried artichokes were a tangy kickstart to the delicious entree. The lemon chicken was seasoned and cooked to juicy perfection. And finally, the apple cobbler, prepared with fresh Fuji apples and cherries was a delightful ending! The staff was attentive and quite superb! We were very comfortable when we left this beautiful place!"

"We had a enjoyable evening at The House. The first impressions outside are a little grim, but you can't judge a book by it's cover. The restored Spanish house is quaint and quite romantic. The food was very good. The arancini was creative with an abundance of flavors. The potoato gnocchi was so delicious and light given it was a pasta. The shrimp & grits, while good was not on par with the other dishes. The sweet potato cake was tasteful, light and the spiced whipped cream added a great touch. The service was good. Timing of the food delivery was inconsistent - 1st & 2nd course were served only 10 minutes apart, then dessert arrived 20-25 minutes after the 2nd course. We will be back for another try."

"We had an excellent dining experience on this occasion. As always the food and service were very good. On this beautiful spring night, we were seated under the big carob tree behind the patio. "I love the patio of this place - it was a perfect place for a 1st date. I will definitely return to try more dishes. The New York Strip was prepared perfectly which encourages me to try the more unusual dishes offered on a return trip. The service was perfect. All of our needs were met almost immediately without ever feeling like the server was hovering. All-in-all a great place to get to know someone over wine and dinner."

"One of the best hidden spots in the Valley. It was beautiful to sit outside in the evening under the moon and stars. The staff was extremely friendly - had nice conversations with the hostess, bartender, and our server. The food was excellent. The didn't stint even though it was the restaurant week menu. Everything was fresh and well prepared. I will definitely eat here again."

"The setting is very much a garden, so it's very peaceful, but the property was a little odd. We had a little trouble finding our way to the front door and the hostess station. They were not quite ready for us when we arrived, despite reservations. The rest of the evening's service was a polite, relaxed pace, but on the verge of being too slow.
However, the setting was great and food was expertly prepared and delicious. The wine list had lots of options. We started with the Smoked Trout Spread. The fresh catch was Halibut in a light tomato sauce that complemented the fish well, but was seasoned delicately enough to let the fish shine through. The Papparadelle and Sweet potato desert were perfect too. We're definitely headed back."

"I was excited to be seated under the Carob tree, it was beautiful! Props to our waitress, she was very friendly& knowledgeable with the menu, she truly appeared to love what she does. I ordered a cocktail I've had at previous visits but this time it just wasn't right, I usually hesitate to remark about such things but I did and she immediately had the cocktail remade for me without making me feel I've put anyone out and then to make it even better let me know that both she and the bartender agreed with my thoughts on the taste!! Her customer sevice skills are spot on! Five stars for that alone!The food was incredible! Cheeses,arancini,shrimp&grits and halibut, all amazing! The only complaint I have is that I was too full to have dessert!"

"a really great experience. my wife is a foodie, so she was really impressed that I suggested this spot. the food was great and filling. we ordered quite a bit, and really liked all of it. the atmosphere was great - not too quiet, and not too noisy. favorites that night were the South Mountain Paloma drink, parpadelle pasta, and apple cobbler. we have friends coming into town - this will be the perfect spot to bring them. looking forward to returning soon!"

"LOVE this restaurant!
We had the most romantic dinner on the patio this weekend. There is really no other patio in Phoenix that can compare. It is so refreshing to dine at a restaurant that makes fresh pasta, you can not beat it! The Gnocchi was to die for and the polenta fries are always a must.

"What an awesome restaurant!Outstanding dishes--trout appetizer,rice balls,& sweet potato planks;papparedelli & the halibut special.The halibut came on top of a red sauce that we all felt was overkill--the fish was so amazing and did not need the extra flavor.We also ordered the smashed potatoes(nothing special& the carrots, wonderful but not enough of them, plus a little pricey for what was served. It is a lovely building, imagine art deco combined with spanish overtones! We sat inside since it was still a little chilly to sit on the patio, but all agreed that we would enjoy it on another visit. And the service? Our waitress couldn't have been more pleasant, helpful and knowledgeable.Only negative was the overly loud jarring music."

"We tried this restuarant based on several reviews, and the location sounded lovely. Well, the garden/patio dining is lovely! The food was good but nothing special. However, while our server was very nice, the kitchen pacing was AWFUL. It was just my husband and I. There was a table next to us of eight. They ordered after we did, yet were gone (yes, done and GONE) by the time our entrees arrived. My husband, who typically tolerates slow service, was even getting irked. We waited an hour after our appetizer for our main course to arrive! And sure enough, even dessert took 20 minutes! I doubt we'll go back."

"We had an incredible dinner here. We sat outside in a picturesque setting, with palm trees, and a beautiful secret garden adjacent to our table.
The food was wonderful. I had the grilled romaine salad (terrific) and the fish of the day (halibut with tomatoes & golden raisins) Amazing.

"We had the BEST meal. Favorites were sweet potato planks, beet and goat cheese salad, lemon chicken, parpadelle, and cannolis... although it was all so tasty. we just loved the cozy feel of the restaurant. Great and knowledgeable service about the menu and the wines. we will definitely be back again soon. best meal I have had in a very long time! Thanks for a beautiful evening at The House"

"We love coming to The House, they never disappoint!
The menu is always new, fresh, delicious and well executed, the setting is unique with one of the best patios in town and our service is always impeccable.
Last night was no exception. The pork belly appetizer was decadent and amazing, my pasta was perfectly done and so fresh, and we even (somehow) found room to order every dessert on the menu- delicious!
It is so nice to have a local restaurant that is so consistently excellent to count on for a wonderful night out. I love sharing this local gem with friends.
Thank you House at Secret Garden for another great night, we will be back soon!"

"Heard about this place from several different sources.......was so excited to make it there as a special evening with friends that visited from out of town. The service was exceptional........the outdoor patio is beautiful........the food, however was a bit of a disapointment. I ordered the chicken - which I saw come out of the kitchen for several other tables. When it got to our table (another person from our group ordered it as well) there was barely any chicken and a whole lot more potatoes on our plate. I also found the wine list quite limited, especially by the glass.
I would consider giving it another try, because it is a special place......I only hope the food improves greatly."

"We had high hopes for The House but were a little disappointed with the overall experience. Service was slow considering it wasn't that crowded for a Friday night. Took 5 minutes just to get water and another 5 for a waitress to show up at the table. My dish, shrimp and grits w/ bacon, was very tasty but the portion size was a bit small I thought. My wife had a halibut special that was pretty "blah" according to her. We drove 45 minutes to get there and it is very unlikely we will do that again."

"My husband and I had heard/read about The House at Secret Garden for a few months and finally got around to checking it out. We were very pleasantly surprised by not only the huge outdoor patio (remeniscent of Old Town Tortilla Factory,Scottsdale) but also the amazing house and history. We sat at the bar (small but adequate) because there were no outdoor tables available and we like sitting at the bar. It turned out to be an amazing experience. The bartender Tiffany was terrific and the manager Stephanie just seemed to have everything dialed in. Drinks were unique and delicious, wine list was small but pleasant and the food was excellent."

"Great time with my wife and friends from New York. Patio was full (next time I know to request) but the ambiance and craftsmanship of the interior of the restaurant is stunning. I read a past review on the grits being salty (not in my opinion) loaded with flavor starting with the sweetness of the corn and the salty ness of the pancetta followed by a bite of spice in the end that pairs perfectly with the creamy grits. I also had the beet and goat cheese salad with black Mesa ranch goat cheese that was delicious."
