Since 1987, the year Jean Michel Diot moved from France to the United States, he has lived a non-stop cooking career well highlighted by the press. In New York, he excelled in his own restaurants, Park Bistro and Les Halles. In La Jolla he opened Tapenade and brought the experience of his New York restaurants and mixed it to the sunny cooking of California.

"Tapenade is a neighborhood gem. The food was very good but it is a rather small place. There weren't a lot of choices on the menu. The neighborhood is not really upscale to match the prices and there is no view. Limited parking. But the service was good and the dining experience pleasant."

"For the fifth year in a row, we enjoyed the special Valentine's Day fixed-menu dinner at the Tapenade and it was the most enjoyable ever. We ordered the wine-pairings and were delighted with the various wines to which we were exposed. We mostly go to the Tapenade for special occasions (Valentine's Day, anniversaries, special visitors we wish to "spoil" with a great meal, etc.) and we are always glad we do. We have never been disappointed in the food and have never had less than fine service. I have recommended the Tapenade to some very particular diners who quite critical and been delighted to see them very satisfied with their dining experience."

"We tried the Chef's tasting menu with accompaning wines. Our server described each plate so enticely that we couldn't wait to dig in and we were not disappointed. Maine Crab Salad, Sea Bass, Veal Loin, Vanilla Poached Pear, Chocolate & Hazel Nut Crumble & Warm Chocolate Fondant with White Chocolate Parfait. All this for about $200. If you want to spend an 1 1/2 hours of decadent luxury, this is the place. Love it! Love it! Love it!"

"Overall great experience. My girlfriend and I had a great Valentine's Day fixed menu there. We sat in the corner table and I proposed to her there so it is a memorable place for us. The food was excellent especially the red pepper sorbet and the sea bass. The tuna tartare with caviar just melted in our mouth. The presentation was top notch. My fiance did complain the the pheasant breast was a little dried out. The service was excellent."

"I eat at Tapenade about 4 times per year, sometimes more. It's one of my favorite restaurants in San Diego. Unfortunately, I was a little disappointed by the entrees on this visit. The Dover Sole and the venison were both just mediocre. The appetizer, lobster bisque, and apple tart were fantastic, as expected."

"This was our first visit to Tapenade. February 14th, Valentine's Day. Special menus for Monsieur et Madame. Outstanding: service and Champagne. First rate: food, Burgundy Blanc, and Porto. Not so great: tables (for two primarily) were too close together; felt rushed (obviously, the owners wanted to turn over the tables several times that evening).
Not sure if we'll return. If so, it will be on a slower evening where perhaps we can enjoy ourselves more."

"I went on Valentines Day so I am not sure if it is always like this but the tables were WAY to close to each other! My boyfriend and I felt as though we were eating with the people sitting next to us. The table behind ours was also too close because I kept getting bumped by servers. I also felt rushed. The server as well as staff would ask me if I was finished way before I was done with each plate."

"Gracious, warm welcome ... splendid Alaskan salmon...fine New Zealand wine ...and just the right level of personal service (not absent, not hovering, very discreet). "Two had delicious lobster bisque which was just spicy enough. I had the goat cheese and potatoes,which was beautifully presented and tasted good. The wild bore, was melt-in-your-mouth delicious. Its side of mashed potatoes and vegetables was also excellent. One guest had the salmon, which she enjoyed, but having shared bites, we agreed had a bit of a strong fish taste. We each ordered a different dessert. After our first bits, we did an around the table, and could not agree on which was the best. They were all delicious and beautiful. With not a wine connoisseur in our group, we accepted the suggested wine parings. We were a bit disappointed with the wine choices. But, we should have asked more about the choices before ordering."

"I like this restaurant and have dined here several times. A table of four can converse easily and the food is generally good. On this occasion some items were very good and some just good but, the special bass dish was very fishy and salty and thus not too good. We would go back and hope that our total meal would be very good. Dinner for four with two drinks and a bottle of wine was $340 plus tip."

"This was an absolutely fabulous experience. their food is beyond superb. I am a vegetarian (my husband is not) and I have to say that if a restaurant can do gourmet veg food, their non veg food must be to die for (which my husband said it was). They even had choices of foods for me, not just 1 item. So many restaurants treat us like we have no taste buds.The service was excellent, typical French style, non invasive but attentive. I highly recommend Tapenade!"

"We did New Year's Eve this year with Tapendae and we weren't disappointed. The jazz quartet along with the dining ambiance was supberb. We had the 7:00 PM confirmed seating and we didn't feel rushed or hurried to leave. Plenty of interesting people to watch if the conversation runs down at the table. Had a slight misunderstanding with regards to the cost of a bottle of Champagne, but believe it was an honest mistake from my end. Note the half bottles come first on the wine menu...........We will definitely be back!"

"This was New Year's Eve. The meal was easily the best-tasting I've enjoyed in over a year. The five courses (with dessert) were all outstanding culinary treats, featuring fine souces, melt-in-your-mouth textures, and pleasing presentations. Hot plates for hot dishes, cold plates for cold dishes. Very attentive (but nonintrusive) wait staff who genuinely seemed to want my experience to be wonderful. (And it was.) My only minor complaint was that we were seated too close to the live musical group that included a saxaphone that made it difficult to carry on a conversation. But that did nothing to take away from the extraordinary meal. With tip dinner for two (including one drink apiece)was $230. A great special occassion."

"Food was amazing!! Best food around La Jolla even San Diego, it is so good we went back the following day. We had the Lobster (white corn, potatoes, mushrooms and a vanilla sauce) Escargot was perfectly cooked and seasoned, Venison was tender, you could cut it with a fork, we also had the Crab and Mango salad with coconut and lime sauce.. delicious! so is the Coq au vin and the Salmon. Desserts are great! we had the Profiterols and the Blueberry creme brulee... both days We will definitely go back."

"We had dinner the Tapenade on Tuesday, 8 December. My wife and I had the soup (butternut squash), I had the fish of the day (swordfish) and she had the scallops. Tapenade does the little things really well, from amuse bouche, to fresh warm bread, soup served hot, and nicely-seasoned entrees. We split the pear dessert. The team service was excellent, but it was a quiet night, so I cannot comment on how they do under a heavy load. We plan to return."

"We went for Thanksgiving and it was our first time there. The wait staff was friendly and attentive and we never felt rushed (we actually stayed and talked for over an hour after dinner and nobody made us feel like we should get up and leave). The atmosphere was lovely, quiet and comfortable. The food was exceptional and the menu was perfect for the holiday. We loved the assortment of little cookies after the whole meal had been served and eaten. A very nice touch. We will definitely return. We had a very enjoyable experience. Thank you."

"I had eaten at Tapenade many times before booking through Open Table for Thanksgiving, so this is an overall review. The food on Thanksgiving was great -- even though I fell for ordering the turkey dinner (always a bad idea at any restaurant, in my experience), it was actually pretty good, and the butternut squash creme brulee was phenomenal. The seating was very comfortable and relaxed; we had a great time. In general, Tapenade is always reliable, and a great choice for lunch (always quiet, and if the weather's nice, you can eat outside as well) and holidays, when they seem to be open pretty reliably (but ask just to be sure). Highly recommended."
