"While the seating at Akiko's may be limited, the freshness of the sushi is on point. Definitely try the Hawaiian butter fish - it was so silky and light. There is a large selection of specialty rolls, but there seem to be many redundancies in them. However, if you persevere, you should be able to find a few different ones. And, don't miss the cabbage salad/slaw!"

"This review does not reflect on their sashimi selection.
But my girlfriend and I would visit San Francisco once or twice a year and every time we made the trip here, we would always come to Akiko's because of a wonderful experience way back when we came in 2011. But this time when we came, we noticed that many of their signature sushi rolls were gone. Asking the waiter, they said that they have been removed. It was such a shame because i was really looking forward to the signature rolls that i could not find anywhere else. But we settled for the spicy tuna roll, rainbow roll, an order or gyoza, and the ika. The food was aesthetically pleasing to the eye. But the food was still delicious."

"Lots of great options here for sushi. The sushi chefs are very skilled and omakase is the best sushi dining experience if you are willing to pay for it. The sushi is the most fresh I have ever had in the city. Kudos!"

"The food was very good.
However, everything else was awful. The welcome was cold, left us & other guests hovering by the door without comment.
Then sat us on the worst table that was freezing and felt like you were in a fast food service station.
We waited 30 minutes for a drink & that only came after we chased for it & after being told they had run out of the beer we ordered!
When ordering the food, they had run out of 3 options.
Another of our dishes just didn't arrive & they didn't have a clue

"First off, don't confuse this Akiko's (located on Bush Street) with the one on Mason Street. This one is not to be missed. Our waiter could not have been more helpful or truthful about his recommendations of sashimi (what was fresh and what was frozen). We got three different sashimis, all of which were incomparable to any other sushi I have ever had, and the forty-niner roll which was amazing. The mixed salad, cucumber salad and fried crab were also perfect."

"it's a small dining room, which means you can either hear the conversations of the people next to you, or you can hear your dining companion in equal measure. But, it doesn't feel like a competition to be heard, so it's a reasonable/vibrant noise level.
I had the nigiri duo with tempura, which takes the guesswork out of what to have and it was fantastic in quality and presentation (love the slate plates)."

"Fabulously fresh with unique flare. Inside is very small - not good for groups over 4. Definitely make a reservation. Pricey if you try the offering which makes this place amazing, so be prepared. Tab for 3 was $250 (w sake). Service was attentive/knowledgable so ask for suggestions. Wagyu Beef nigiri – excellent - opt for the black truffle topping if available (delicately sliced, not over bearing). Walu & Umimasu sashimi are a must. 'Special menue' sashimi were superb – order Otoro and save it for your last bite of the meal. Rolls – the Forty-niner (thin sliced lemon perfectly balanced chunks of sweet organic salmon). I always try a spicy tuna roll - my meter to the fish integrity of a sushi joint - perfection! Red bean mochi to finish."

"After a really bad seating experience the last time we went (1 1/2 hour wait for our reservation that we were on time for), we gave it another try. We were seated right away which was of course wonderful! The food was great however the wine list was a little lacking. Every wine my friend tried to order they seemed to be out of. Will be going back again because I love their sushi."

"Our negative experience started when we had trouble finding the restaurant and the hostess could not give us directions. We finally found it in spite of the fact that the restaurant has NO sign. Is this some sort of postmodern statement? Things did not improve once we finally arrived. While the server took his time with us to explain various menu items, at least 3-4 of the food items and 3-4 bottles of wine were sold out. We finally got a bottle of wine ordered, but the waiter forgot about it. One of the food items I ordered was also sold out, but I only found out about this when the food was set in front of me and the waiter explained that the chef made a substitution. The service was so bad that the busser brought the check."

"Akikos is one of SanFrancisco's rare gems! My boyfriend and I had a hard time finding the restaurant at first, since there is no sign outside of it. It ended up being on the corner of an Irish pub in the alley, so its easy to miss. The ambiance was very sensual, dimly lit with candles and the prices were very reasonable for the amazing quality of food we received.Of course if you come there really hungry, you'll have to shell out more. I had a nigiri-sashimi duo, which was very buttery smooth and miso with cucumber salad-the ginger-soy dressing was magnificent- and a delicious delicate red bean gelato for dessert,which topped the night off perfectly. I'm definitely coming back here the next time I get the chance!!!!!"

"Our office just moved a couple of blocks away from Akiko's, and I hadn't had sushi since my son was born, so I was really craving some fresh sushi. I met a friend here, and it was just the most fresh, and tasty sushi I've had in a long time. The nigiri was wonderful, and the rolls were even better. I feel like this is a hidden gem, because there isn't even a sign outside, so I walked right past it at first! The service was great, and I can't wait to go back."

"The food is very good; however, the service is inconsistent. Although our server polite, I had to wonder why he didn't just admit he forgot one of our food items. When I inquired, he said he would check, and came back and said it wasn't on our order, but we all heard him repeat it along with everything else on our order..so he either's lying or it magically erased from his list? It's a little thing, but it bugged. Refills for beverages a bit slow. We were 2 min. early on our reservation and they made us along with another person wait outside. 5 min. later you could tell they were still not ready to open, but reluctantly sat us. As mentioned, inconsistent. I'd recommend but not without an *asterisk."

"Akiko's provided me with the best Japanese food I have ever experienced in the US. I lived in Japan for 13 years and travel there frequently on business and feel that the sushi is on par with good quality sushi in Japan. The decor is simple and calming, and the noise level is moderate so it is easy to carry on a conversation. I highly recommend Akiko's."

"Probably the best place downtown to get sushi if you're in the mood. Sadly, the Financial District is lacking in this department - but really does make up for it with a plethora of other great places! As expected, the sushi is by no means "cheap" (if it is, you've got a problem).. But I was pleasantly surprised in that it wasn't AS expensive as I expected and was excellent.
Service was outstanding. Be sure to make a reservation as they rarely (if ever) take walk-ins!"

"It had been a year since we had gone to Akiko's, as we had moved away from SF and found ourselves back in town for a visit. Truly disappointed to see that most of our favorite items had been removed from the now-smaller menu to never return again. We won't be back."

"The restaurant is a little hard to find as they don't currently have a sign outside, so pay attention to the street number. The sushi was fantastic! Some of the best that I have had in quite a while. Reservations are a must as they were turning people away when we showed up at 6:45pm for our reservation."
