Trattoria Da Vinci
Ambitious fare a step ahead of the usual Italian dishes. This is the real deal Italian food.
In Short-
At the lunchtime pasta bar, a long line of St. Paul office workers snakes around the restaurant. At dinner, the Pasta bar is also available But the gold medal has to go to the Gamberoni Portofino. How can you go wrong with jumbo shrimp sauteed with portobella mushrooms and asparagus spears in a brandy cream sauce. INCREDIBLE! With live music on Friday and Saturday, the mood is as relaxed and romantic as the women in the Leonardo da Vinci prints hanging on the wall. For lunch, the recommended Focaccia Genovese is juicy, savory and garlicky. The Mushroom ravioli is above average, but the star dish is the Parmesan-crusted cold water walleye.

"The capellini alla checca with spicy sausage was heavenly . . . I took some home and couldn't wait to finish it the following day when it tasted even better!! I was not impressed with the tasteless bread and the salad however . . . fix that and I'll be back on a regular basis. I have been raving to anyone who listens how fantastic it was!!"

"While there's much to love about this little restaurant, the food is the hands-down biggest reason I keep coming back. A close second though is that it immediately became my and my wife's favorite romantic spot. While the food has always shone thru; the service seems to depend (at least in part) to who's serving you. Our first waiter, at our first time visiting, was absolutely excellent. This last visit was not the same; our server seemed either distracted, or disinterested. A slight, I repeat slight, dulling of an otherwise brilliant experience."

"Saturday May 4, 2013 was our fourth visit to Trattoria Da Vinci. I will preface this by saying I had, in all 3 previous visits, a wonderful experience with wonderful food. The run of good times and food came to a a screeching halt this past Saturday evening. The flavor of the food was comparable to a lean cuisine frozen dinner with pepper. Our server was intent on trying to rush us through dinner to turn over the table. The restaurant was not that busy and our seating was not until after 7 pm. We reside in the Northwest metro, it was 80 miles roundtrip for us. I will find it difficult to return for another visit."

"This restaurant is classic - decorated with DaVinci's drawings and artwork, in a fabulous old building in downtown St. Paul, and the jazz player on weekends is great (although not enough people pay attention to him). We made reservations through open table. Hint: ask for a specific table or location in the restaurant. Even though there was one open by the window (a prime spot), they seated us upstairs at a small table next to a big family. We should have asked for a different table, but assumed the others were reserved.

"My husband and I love Da Vinci! We come here for any special occasion we are looking to celebrate, and sometimes just for no reason at all. We are both huge fans of the pasta bar, it's a very reasonable price for the amount of food you get, (we both leave with leftovers every time.) When he worked downtown, my husband would often go there for the pasta bar for lunch also.
I would highly recommend Da Vinci to every person I meet, not only is the food incredible but we have gotten wonderful servers each time we've been there. Not to mention, the atmosphere is incredible!"

"This might have been our best visit to Trattoria yet. Our service was impeccable, the drinks excellent, and the food was delicious. My husband had the special which was a mushroom truffle ravioli with sausage, and it was so good he saved half to take home. I had the sirlion with gorgonzola sauce, and the meat was tender and cooked exactly how I expected. We always order the tiramisu here, as the custard is lighter than anywhere else and the portion is so large that we can share. All in all, we can't wait to come back."

"I really love this place; the food is excellent. I've been here a few times. The place is small and quaint, so if you don't make reservations, you may not be able to get in. The staff is friendly, attentive and knowledgeable. My waiter even made a recommendation for an entree that I didn't like and he was happy to replace it with something different.
There is a small parking lot to the west of the building. Heads up-it's a pay lot and you must pay, or your car will be towed. Someone does rounds in the lot every 30 minutes and they will quickly tow you, as I experienced after paying and putting the wrong license plate on the envelope (I was in a rental and made a mistake).
Otherwise, highly recommended place to eat."

"This is our second time at the restaurant. We enjoyed it the first time but probably won't return after the last visit. The food was just okay. My salad was bland, the walleye was dry, but the rosotto was very good. The other diners with me expressed that their meal was just okay as well. We ordered dessert and that was just fair as well. I am sorry to say we were disappointed."

"Trattoria Da Vinci is located near Mears park in downtown St. Paul. Parking can be an issue but wasn't when we were there. The food is excellent, especially the pasta bar with generous portions tailored to your individual taste. Wine was excellent as was the live music. Service is good."

"Unfortunately we were seated at a table right next to the pasta bar, but I was with a person who used to hostess and doesn't believe in requesting a different table. If I had been with someone else, we would have moved. The restaurant has alot of ambience. The food: mediocre bread; no salad with entree; good walleye; so so red potatoes; tasty shrimp cocktail, but the shrimp should have been ice cold and they were not; excellent Chi Chi and Tropical Breeze mixed drinks. I thought that $20 was alot to pay for one average size piece of walleye and some potatoes, no salad, and unimpressive bread. Sorry Trattoria, I wanted to like you more than I did..."

"This is my boyfriend's favorite restaurant, but it was my first time going there. He always does the pasta experience where you can pick out what kind of pasta you would like and what to put in it and I had the salmon. We both enjoyed our dishes so much that there were no leftovers! It was busy since it was a Saturday night, but we didn't have to wait long for our food and had no problems hearing each other from across the table. All of the staff were polite, friendly, and attentive. We will definitely be going again!"
