Chef Bill Telepan acclaimed former chef of the 3-star Judson Grill will serve the very best and freshest of seasonal foods impeccably prepared and paired with an interesting, hand- picked and reasonably priced selection of wines. Ruth Reichl described his cooking as “…extremely eloquent; each of [his] unassuming dishes roars with flavor, and the minute you finish one bite you instantly want another. His direct style draws diners into a vibrant interplay of textures, tastes and colors.” Telepan, an exciting new destination located in the heart of the Upper West Side, will welcome fine dining enthusiasts from around the city, as well as the pre- and post-theater Lincoln Center crowd. "Telepan is quite simply the perfect restaurant. The service is friendly and professional, the ambience is elegantly stylish, and the food is a work of art. Although it's easy to run up a tab here, it's money well spent. Our only reluctance in singing the praises of Telepan is that we may one day be unable to reserve a table at this wonderful place because the line to get in will be around the block."

"Not an extremely varied menu, especially in terms of contrast of flavors and textures. Vegetable soup wasn't very subtle, and yet was bland. Seemed excessively wintry with spring dishes appearing around town. Food tastes more like light classic French, without excitement for the demanding palate. Nice trio of amuses-bouches, though, was a highlight. Wines by the glass limited, flavorless, and exceedingly overpriced."

"Telepan is like a beautiful woman who is all too aware of how beautiful she is.

"The food was excellent, but the service a little sloppy. With so many tables vacant at lunch, why would the hostess seat us directly next to two other diners? (We asked for a table change, and got it.) Also, don't wait so long to bring the wine after it is ordered."

"The food was so good that I felt it was a bargain to pay $55 for a 4-course tasting menu. Our reservation was at 5:30 and by the time we were done it was only 7:20. That gave us plenty of time to walk to the Lincoln center for 8:00 opera. The food was great and the opera was great. We almost had a perfect evening if there was not heavy rain and gusty wind."

"This was my fifth visit to Telepan. I don't live in NY and try to eat there as often as I can. The food is delicious, well presented and it is was an enjoyable evening. The bay scallops were outstanding.
There were four people in my party and each person felt the same way.
The service is professional although our waiter was not particularly friendly on this occasion.
The wine list has many choices but pricey. We selelcted an Australian wine that was excellent."

"Food was both delicious and creative using seasonal ingredients, also in generous portions for this type of a restaurant. Service had some issues with timing but I guess it is to be expected for a full house on a Saturday night. "As a vegetarian, I find it difficult to find a great place to eat while dining with my carnivorous friends and family. This was a lovely experience. Both my server and busser were great-and you bet I notice when the busser is doing their job or not. My table was crumbed between each course and the server made sure that my "gift from the chef" (an amuse-bouche) was vegetarian though I noticed that my father's (a big meat eater) was not.
I highly enjoyed my appetizer and mid-course/entree (lots of veg-midcourses, no veg "entrees") The dessert (a bread pudding) was delicious but the cheese selection left a bit to be desired. Though I loved my food, my father only liked his. I would probably go back."

"The meal was spectacular (polenta souffle was a bit dull, but the Heritage Pork was excellent), but it was the sommelier Aaron who shone. "In the middle of a major snow storm in NYC we enjoyed a real winter treat of pork with home made sausage and winter vegetables before heading off to a concert at the Lincoln Center. Staff were I believe somewhat surprised that we had braved the elements and could not have been more solicitous. It is always an occasion to dine at Telepan, especially when there is no occasion."

"btwn. the very sour hostess, the table by the door that WOULD not be changed (not could not as there were other tables avail.), the freezing air and smoke from the smokers (yes we were that close to the front door) and the obnoxious bar music (yes we were that close to the bar too) this meal could not be saved. the food was delicious but the atmosphere and environment from the GREETING BEFORE BEING SEATED was so awful that i really just wanted to leave! blasts of cold air during a wonderful meal do nothing at all to enhance it. please do share this with the restaurant - they should know that they are doing their chef a huge disservice, literally."

"Excellent food and wine. Good service. However, the chairs are very uncomfortable, and some of the cramped, inelegant tables do not match the cost: $250, food, wine tip for two people. For my wife and I, it certainly took the bloom off of a special occasion celebration, being sandwiched between two other tables. Other banquet-style tables appear more comfortable and luxe; my advice is not to go if one cannot be reserved in advance."

"We would definitely go back to this restaurant. Our waiter (the opera singer) was outstanding and made our lunch just that much better. His knowledge of the opera we would be seeing that night made our experience richer. His excitement about the food we ordered made everything taste better. Great experience! We love this place because sometimes it really is about the positive energy in combination with great food. BTW the pastry chef made incredible bread and the caramel ice cream is something I will not forget...delish!"

"It's really hard for my husband and me to judge this restaurant. We had a 2:30 brunch seating and the waiter came over and told us the kitchen was closing. We had to order immediately. He left for a minute, and then came back and hovered until we ordered, so we were very rushed. (He gave us a story that he was hiding out with us instead so that way the management wouldn't pressure him to pressure us.) It was very bizarre. The food was good, but I felt as though we could have ordered more to our tastes if we had more than 2 minutes (literally) to look at the menu. At least the manager recognized that there was a problem, and lowered the cost of our brunch."

"Telepan fell short of my expectations, the atmosphere and the food respectively dull and only moderately good. We ordered from the 4 Course Tasting Menu, allowing us to taste eight dishes in all. I liked my ARTICHOKE & HEARTS OF PALM SALAD whose flavors were nicely balanced. However, the Tuscan VEGETABLE-BREAD SOUP was bland and served luke warm. The FALLEN POLENTA SOUFFLE flavor was undefined and starchy in texture. The LOBSTER BOLOGNESE sauce was good but the poor lobster was blasted in it's own shell, totally dry. Both entrees were good, the ROASTED CHICKEN and HERITAGE PORK were tender and nicely composed. We also liked our desserts, the BREAD PUDDING and the CRUNCHY PEANUT BUTTER & MILK CHOCOLATE GIANDUJA were delicious."

"We came for Sunday brunch on the recommendation of a friend and had an absolutely perfect experience! From the peach belliini's to the lobster and scallions omelet and the biscuits and gravy (awesome homemade sausage), each bite tasted even better than the one before - a true art of perfect blending of flavors. The service was both professional and friendly with the right amount of attention paid to us to meet our every need, but not "hover". "Three friends went for an early dinner during Restaurant Week. The ambience was lovely, the servers knowledgable and friendly. The menu offerings and amuse bouche were delicious. I was, however, a bit disappointed in two aspects of our dinner. First, the menu was divided into three savory sections: Appetizers, Second Courses and Entrees, the Restaurant Week offerings included three choices of these or two and a dessert. Only thing is that everyone at the table had to order in the same fashion. Three old friends agreeing on what and how to order for their dinner was quite a daunting experience."

"We had eaten at the predecessor restaurant, Santa Fe, and had wondered what the new owner had done with the space. It is a little brighter hbnhjhand a little more open, but the dining experience is very different. This is an elegant upscale restaurant, but one with the feeling of a neighborhood place. The advertised style is American, but most of the food combination seemed to be out of the chef's imagination with a Eastern European touch. There were enough pierogi on the menu for me to wonder if he was from Poland or maybe Pennsylvania, where you can get pierogi as a snack in some of the smaller Pocono Mountain ski areas"

"My third visit, again during RW. The food was as delicious was ever--salad and brook trout apps delicious, polenta souffle creative and wonderful, red snapper entree out of control (and the scallops entree was good, though nothing like the snapper), and peanut butter dessert really delicious. This time I was seated in the side room (to the right when you enter) and didn't like it as much. Also, our waiter was strange, and had really bizarre mannerisms that seemed fake, which disappointed me, because I've had lovely service on the two prior occasions. However, because the food is so incredibly delicious, and the RW deal such a steal, the space and waiter can be ignored. Highly recommended, esp during RW."

"The Five-Course tasting menu is an excellent deal, since you can choose items from each category. Between the two of us, we had a chance to sample many of the offerings on the menu. We were a bit ambivalent about our middle course selections (the chickpea pancake, which is not a chickpea pancake, but an ordinary flour pancake with chickpeas, and the lobster bolognese, which doesn't have much lobster and just wasn't anything special), but everything else was excellent, particularly the goose liver terrine with goose breast prosciutto appetizer, the sirloin and veal entrees, and the blood orange granita parfait.

The five-course tasting ended up being a bit much food for us, actually, so next time we'd probably get the four-course."

"We ate a Telepan for lunch; we were looking for a decent place to eat near Central Park and we got so much more than that. We had the 3 course lunch and every course was outstanding and delicious. The food was really a culinary work of art!
The wines were excellent and our waitress was very knowledgable about wines and happy to provide suggetions. The service was also very attentive throughout our meal. The ambience was upscale but comfortable, and we felt appropriately dressed for lunch with nice, casual clothes on."

"We went for dinner on a Sat. night. They seated us immediately, coat check right there. We didn't love the corner we were placed in, but they couldn't change us. The restaurant is fairly large. The ambiance is very nice and the noise level is low. The food was terrific. They treated us (and everyone else) to a few appetizers gratis. I did the prix fixe and my husband was ala carte. I think the prix fixe is the way to go. All in all would recommend this restaurant and look forward to going back. Next time I will request exactly where we want to sit."

"It was my second time at Telepan (and my wife's third time) but first time for dinner. We had excellent cocktails, which we don't normally order (try the Italian 77). Telepan's focus is on fresh seasonal food; perhaps because it was the middle of winter, the ingredients weren't quite as inspired as on previous visits for lunch. That said, the appetizers (egg in the hole for me and a smoked brook trout salad for my wife) were outstanding. For the second course I had roasted chicken with brussel sprouts, which was very good. Brussel sprouts are always a risk but these were tender, mellow and nicely carmelized. All the dishes were beautifully presented. In all respects it was a good dining experience - barely short of five-star."

"Best restaurant on the UWS. Everything---from the amuse bouche to the lobster spaghetti to the pork to the homemade ice cream---was perfectly amazing. I don't know how they do it, but I wish other restaurants could learn from Telepan. Even the salad was perfectly dressed instead of drowned. And the half bottle of Oregon Pinot Noir made me want to cry it was so beautiful. My friend told me the owner cooks monthly lunches for PS 87, which makes me like the restaurant even more."

"Very good. The food was fresh and tasty. Presentation lovely. Some dishes standout (blini trout dish; chocolate peanut-butter dessert; the amuse bouche; side rolls); some solid (chickpea pancakes and entree trout) and some one only so-so (scallops, which were overcooked). Overall, enjoyed the dining experience very much. The server was affable and knowledgable about the menu, as well as opera! We enjoyed ourselves, and would be keen to try other items on the menu. The room is quite elegant, a bit throw-back in its touches -- perhaps even a bit too refined for the more greenmarket and slightly homey-leaning details in the food (which I liked, just don't know if there is total uniformity there). The $39 pre-theatre 3-course menu is a steal."

"This was our first time dining at Telepan. We came in for a pre-Theater meal and the restaurant was quiet and welcoming. We sat and had a drink at the bar with a charming bartender who made us our favorite martinis. The Maitre-D showed us to a great table; our waiter Jeffrey saw to our every need. Everyone was so courteous and professional - a welcome change from some of the other 3 star restaurants we've been to. And the FOOD... where do I begin? There wasn't one item on this fantastic menu we didn't want to try - our waiter knew his product inside and out! We paired wine with our meal - a great way to best enjoy all the flavorful food and extensive wine selection. Our experience was perfect - we will definitely be back again, and again!!!"

For $165 each, we should have had a spectacular meal or at least been in a spectacular atmosphere but we found both fell well short of our expectations and were mediocre at best. While the band was good, they were very removed from the dining area so we might as well have been listening to recorded music. "Very good service, relaxing, pleasant dinner atmosphere. Our server was very helpful, including slowing down the kitchen, which was rushing out courses even though we had mentioned we had no show deadline. Both had the tasting menu. Some flavorful combinations but for what Telepan aspires to, too much of the execution fell flat. For example, Maine scallops (looked like they were thinly sliced) overcooked and bland. Very tasty duck and foie gras ravioli, but the duck filling too dried out. Heritage pork, tasty and very tender, but more than half of one small piece was fat, which, if that was intended, needed a better sear. Would probably help to cut one course out, slow down and pay more attention to detail."

"Telepan is one of my favorite restaurants--lunch or dinner.
However, this outing, the gentleman who was supervising the wait staff was less than congenial and very very condescending to the staff and almost superior with an attitude to us. I've never experienced this before. I certainly will return, but will be guarded with respect to the staff--and next time will make my feelings known to the maitre'd."

"This has become our favorite restaurant. I suggest you try the tasting menu since otherwise just too much food. Everything is prepared perfectly, creatively and so very unique! If ever they have hominy on the menu go for it! We had the roasted trout done to perfection and presented elegantly. We have brought many friends and they always go back. What is so exciting is how the chef will take a traditional dish like brisket and make it into something exciting. A recommendation: when there be brave and try new things, you won't be disappointed. Better go soon before its "discovered.""

"Everything was wonderful except for the cheeses, which we thought were only ordinary (maybe because we’re fonder of strong and soft French cheeses) and, in truth, served in pretty small portions. Great place to go before Lincoln center. The striped bass and artichoke salad were outstanding, and everything else was excellent."

"We had a lovely meal at Telepan. The food was exquisite and the service was attentive. Everything I had (smoked trout & blini first course, chickpea pancakes midcourse, and sea bass third course) was just perfect. The fennel & raisin bread was also wonderful. "My husband and I enjoyed our dining experience at Telepan. The food was fresh and inventive and the atmosphere was very pleasant. We did the 4 course tasting menu, which was a great way to taste more of the menu items. We are glad we did, because there were a lot of delicious things to taste! We were not as pleased with the dessert menu as with the rest of the menu. But we are also not very big on dessert and are more about the meal. Overall it as a wonderful meal. We would recommend it to others and go back ourselves."

"Telepan is truly a neighborhood gem. We enjoyed the tasting menu the Saturday before Christmas -- my wife and my daughter -- each of us chose different menu items, and absolutely each and every choice was spectacular! The scallops with spinach dish was phenomenal, as was the foie gras ravioli. Our daughter is a vegetarian, and she managed to be completely satisfied with all her menu choices. The cheese platter for dessert was especially enjoyable, with four different choices. We highly recommend Telepan for everyone who enjoys great gourmet fare -- you will truly be spoiled at Telepan. Everything, from the amuse bouche to the last bite of dessert was a unique, gustatory pleasure!!"

"Telepan has a very creative and very well executed menu for a variety of palates (our vegetarians did pretty well here, too). Our party especially loved the menu choices of appetizer, mid-course, and main course portions, which one could mix and match as one wanted, so different sizes of appetites were all well accomodated! The food was all extremely good, well thought out, and very well presented. The staff were all so nice, attentive, and accomodating - they even went that extra mile to do their best to see that we were served in time to make the opera at the Metropolitan Opera a few blocks away on Christmas Eve, of all nights (and we were!). Highly recommended."

"The food was good - with fresh ingredients and nice preparation - but not exceptional. Our waiter was very good; the busboys were a little to eager to clear the plates. Also, we were only offered two pieces of bread total, which was unfortunate since the tasting menu ($55, or $60 if you ordered a dish that turned out to have about an ounce of lobster in it) was not enough to satisfy me.

I gave it only two stars overall because although it's a nice place and there was nothing bad about it, I felt it was seriously overpriced for the quantity and quality of food I received."

"Zagats loved this place but it was even better than rated. Pretty setting, great service and an extensive, if somewhat expensive wine list, but the food was the best that I have had for a while. The amuse bouche, with a wonderful essence of mushroom soup, as well as a cheese puff that was better than any you have ever had, was a great start. For a $55 prix fix with two appetizers and a main course plus a choice of cheese or dessert, this was pretty good for New York. The courses were each on the small side, but incredibly full flavored. It reminded me of an old favorite, March. They advertise a pre-show special but I would not want to rush such good food."

"Food exquisite with obviously excellent sourcing of ingredients perfectly cooked with flair but simplicity allowing the ingredients to speak for themselves.

Service impeccable friendly and not intrusive.

"We went for my girlfriend's birthday. Although we ordered the tasting menu, we did not want to spend the money on the wine pairings. Our waiter was very helpful with recommending a moderately-priced bottle of wine that would work with what we ordered, and did not make us feel as though we were being cheap.

The food ranged from very good to "WOW," the "wows" being the smoked trout appetizer and the duck and foie gras ravioli. Service was wonderful - attentive without being intrusive or snooty."

"Very nice food and good presentation. Really not badly priced. A comfortable room with pleasant lighting and music.
Service was very friendly but not tremendously prompt, I believe we sat there for a good ten minutes before getting water or ordering a drink. As a side note, they did ask if we were attending a show (which we were) and got us out of there before 7:30 in time for the ballet.
That was a nice touch which would make it a future pre-theatre choice."

"I've been hearing about Telepan for years, and cannot believe I waited this long to try it. Everything about the evening was special. It's this type of restaurant that makes dining in NYC so great. The biggest plus -- a price fixe menu that allows you choose your courses, and doesn't require the whole table to agree on any course. The only complaint I can imagine about Telepan - and it's not mine because we had a great table -- is that the configuration of the restaurant with tiny nooks and small rooms may leave some feeling they are eating alone. I sometimes enjoy that feeling, but might have thought differently at Telepan because of the placement of some of the tables. The restaurant certainly has a unique layout."

"The space that once was Sante Fe has been transformed not only in decor but by the culinary innovations of Chef Telepan (Judson Grill). First-timers must try the tasting menus which actually are a bargain. The House Smoked Brook Trout was delightful, chopped fine on a celery root blini (looked like a potato pancake) with green apple sour cream. The Duck & Foie Gras Ravioli was positively erotic in its parsley root puree and dried fruit sauce. The Dry-Aged Grass Fed Sirloin over spinach with garlic potatoes and oxtail marrow-bone glaze was perfectly cooked to my tastes. The only problem was the sharp looking but dull knives (neither could cut the meat). Add coordinated wines, a cheese course and dessert and it's a feast!"
