Chives Canadian Bistro offers contemporary Canadian cuisine, in a unique casual atmosphere, in the heart of downtown Halifax. The key to Chives' success over the years has been cooking with the use of local, in-season ingredients offering our twist on Canadian cuisine, creating menus using the best and the freshest from the farms and waters of Nova Scotia. "I have never been disappointed at this restaurant. We find we spend quite a bit but it is worth it for special occasions.
I love the biscuits they offer in the beginning - light and fluffy, crispy outside. The chicken dish was super - tender and so tasty!
The maple creme brulee was delicious - a sweet but light ending after a rather rich main.
The tables where we sat were lined up against the wall but there was no interference from neighbouring guests.
Chives is definitely a favourite place to dine!!"

"Truly great food, restaurant, and very, very friendly. We made reservations, ran late (our event ran late and we were driving two hours to get there), changed them, had to wait for our company to join us, and they were gracious and accommodating despite the late hour and inconvenience it must have caused them. It was fantastic food, truly canadian selections and very adept at handling special dietary restrictions. The ambience was likewise very good, and the location is ideal. If I didn't live in another province, I would go lots! Definitely recommend"

"Chives is an excellent place to have dinner before Neptune. You arrive at 6:00, have a good dinner, and still have enough free blood in the system to enjoy the play. A cool $ 100 for two including HST and a well deserved tip makes it a bit pricey though.
We'll be back anyway"

"The food at Chives was OUTSTANDING. My wife and I both had seafood that came with risotto. Scallops and halibut were perfectly cooked and the two risottos were different and delightful - like two sunrises, both amazing but difficult to compare.
However, we did find the ambience left a bit to be desired. The tables were very close together and you could listen in on the conversations on both sides of you. It didn't feel private at all and it took away from the romance of the delightful food.
We would definitely go back for the food but we've lowered our expectations about the ambience and a 'romantic' dinner location."

"It is a great place for a romantic dinner. The food is super. Our waiter was professional, accommodating, friendly and funny. I put moderate for noise because I want people to know that the restaurant was full and did not have to scream to be heard. I love that. There are a few restaurants that have great food where I won't go to because of the loud noise. I can't wait for the next time when we can come back to this one. I rarely put the best rate. I already recommended it and will continue."

"Chives is a perennial favourite and it rarely disappoints. This time, however, I do not feel that it was quite up to its usual top quality. The delicious biscuit was a real treat and the dessert was wonderful. Sadly, neither the app (the evening special) nor the entree met the standard I have come to expect with Chives. The appetizer was far too salty; the chicken entree was not anywhere near hot, and just wasn't up to par."

"I had the seafood chowder special which was very good except for the tiny scallops which had kind of an off taste.Would have been much better with local scallops,cut up if necessary.My main was the lamb shank which was outstanding;I really liked the Moroccan sauce.I am not a couscous fan and I would have preferred Basmati rice.
My wife ordered spinach salad,scallops,and creme brulee which were all outstanding.
We were impressed with the servers.We had several and they were all courteous,well groomed,well spoken,informative,and friendly.
All in all a pleasant dining experience.
Now if you could only do something about the dreadful condition of the streets in your part of town."

"I've eaten at Chives several times and have always been quite impressed with the inventive local dishes and attentive service, except for this most recent visit. I found the sauce for the lamb shank overpowering and far too thick and heavy for the vegetables that were covered in it. The creme brule was also not up to standard. My dinner companion did enjoy her seafood dish which was elegantly presented. The service was also a little off this time with coffeee instead of tea for me, cold coffee for my dinner guest, and a lack of cutlery for dessert. I'll likely go back, but it would seem that they are can't always be the five star experience I've come to expect."

"Had high hopes for this restaurant however when we first walked in, there was an odd earthy/wood like smell that was not pleasant. The lamb was good as well as their biscuits however the vegetables were bland and I found the brussel sprouts has a propane taste to them, probably from the grilling. The music stopped for about 10 mins and you could hear the kitchen sounds and the conversations of those around you. This was our first time here however we won't be going again. Sorry!"

I had 4 guests from France and Quebec who requested that I recommend a 'nice' restaurant while staying overnight in Halifax.
From the minute we walked in the door they were impressed with the decor, service, wine list, food and presentation. The atmosphere was cozy and warm. They couldn't get over the fact we could have a conversation in a normal tone and how quiet the room was, even with a relatively full house. Our service person was very knowledgeable of the menu, professional and friendly.
My guests were still talking about their dining experience as we drove to the airport the following evening.

"Four of us dined and all loved our meals. My lamb was tender and delicious and my co-diners raved about their pasta with chicken and sausage, vegetable dish (so squishy veggies here, alleluia!) and scallops.I confess to stealing bites of my husband's potato from his plate of scallops. Imagine, a scallop lover bypassing the scallops because the potato was sooo good! Presentation on the plate was lovely but sometimes we have gone away still hungry when the dish looks great but there is not a lot of food on the plate. Not the case here, all were completely satisfied. All the staff we dealt with were very friendly and highly professional. Would I go back....yes!"

"Chives was awesome yet again. Still my favorite place to eat in Halifax. My husband & I ordered from the 'The Flavours of Nova Scotia' menu with the NS wine pairings. "Chives is one of my favourite restaurants in Halifax. It is my number one choice for all special occasions. The food is always fresh and delicious. The martinis are very tasty too! We always have the same server and he is excellent! Nick always takes good care of us no matter how busy he is. He is always smiling and very helpful when it comes to menu selections! We always recommend Chives to family and friends and anyone looking for a great restaurant in the downtown area."

"We loved how the menu focused on locally grown foods and products. We had a great seat in the upper area in a little alcove with a view of the street - a great area to sit for a romantic meal. The food and service was excellent right from the moment we were greeted, the informative wait staff, and even on our way out. One of the best meals I've had in the city."

"The food was tasty. The service was middling (we ordered a bottle of wine and the waiter forgot all about it and had to be reminded). The ambiance was fine. It was very expensive ($180 with tip) and there wasn't a whole lot on our plates. My wife (a very slim woman)remarked as we left: "That was nice now lets go get something to eat". We both had appetizers and entrees but no desserts (none of the desserts appealed to us - they need a cheese plate). This experience contrasted greatly from the previous time we had supper there a few years ago. It was't terrible but it was overpriced. It is doubtful that we will return. I did appreciate the online reservation system - that is the first time I had used such a system and I really liked it."

"Everything about the meal was excellent. All members of the serving staff were prompt, helpful, and well-informed about the details of the menu. My wife and I both had selections from the "Dining around Nova Scotia" menu, including the hot pot (beetroot soup) and the lamb. Both were fantastic: rich, flavourful, and perfectly cooked. The complexity of the flavours and textures was incredible. The desserts were excellent as well: toffee cake and chocolate cake, respectively. The peanut butter ice cream is perhaps the richest ice cream that I've ever tasted.
We look forward to our next visit to Chives."
