There are two remarkable things going on at Ciano.
The first is Mr. Gallante’s food, which is ambitious, beautiful and flavor packed, a kind of Italian home cooking made grand and attractive, rich as Berlusconi, not as oily. It is less precious, less purposefully fancy, less aggressively upscale than what he was putting forth at Cru.
For the second remarkable thing about Ciano, named for the Tuscan hill town Montepulciano, is its wine list and, as important, the manner in which its grapes are served.

"The food is prepared, and presented, with great care. The pappardelle with duck bolognese was a knockout; the pan roasted branzino was also exceptional; the veal meatball appetizer should not be skipped and the only item that was not memorable was the chicken for two which lacked the great flavoring everything else we enjoyed included. Service is a little spotty in that they seem to be missing when you really are looking for help and then everywhere when there is no call for help. Worth a try"

"All was well until our entrée of Giannone Chicken For 2 Baked in a Clay Pot arrived. There was nothing about this rubbery boneless skinless chicken breast, served over some mangled cauliflower, that would ever give the impression that had ever been, "Baked in a Clay Pot." Let alone with in 100 feet of one! All this was not helped by a total lack of any flavor. What a disappointment!"

"I would like to express disappointment with a lunch visit today with 3 of my co-workers from Baruch College. About a two years ago we took one of today's group members for her birthday (there were 6 of us that time) and we were tremendously impressed with the food and thoughtful service. Today, it was as if we were visiting a different place entirely. The service was especially slow and inattentive. The restaurant wasn't even 25% full so I'm not sure why the staff was as lax as they were. Simple things like Parmesan cheese, took asking twice for it before it arrived for our main course. I asked for it for my first course (Tuscan Bean Casserole) and it never came at all. I also had to ask twice for a replacement bread basket.

"it's a shame, but this place is operating like it is struggling. half empty. quiet. menu items finished yet restaurant empty. but the food is still excellent and their policy of selling great half bottles is great. they need to try and find ways to fill the restaurant."

"The consistency of this restaurant is in question. Portion size, service and more importantly the quality of food has been inconsistent during the 3 times I have dined here. This is also the consensus of my other dining companions as well. Our last 2 experiences were entrees that were served luke warm and swimming in oil and butter. Quality control anyone!"

"Wine list overpriced. Noise level made conversation uncomfortable. Service was erratic, with push to add elements (double pasta portion, for example)to pump up bill. The very good food compensated for some of the above, but not wholly."

"I had a delicious lunch of duck tortellini as well as beet salad. I appreciated the fact that several menu options could be ordered as either an appetizer portion or as an entree portion. My friend also enjoyed a tasty panna cotta. Service was solicitous and unobtrusive."

"Pros: Waitstaff and service. Fireplace Cocktails (especially the negroni) Cons: Wine List was pretty terrible. Only 2 whites and reds by the glass. White wine by the bottle was about 4-5 whites and Reds where 10-12. Prices started @ $65+ and the selection of wines was pretty poor for those prices. Burrata appetizer was weird. They took a perfectly shaped burrata, mashed it with parmesan cheese and herbs and then served it. Looked nasty. Soppressata appetizer was uneventful. It was spicy and tasted like pepperoni on a pizza. Leg of lamb had promise. Flavors where there, a bit tough but the side veggies where cooked right.
I did not try other dishes but for a first impression i would not go back. There's so many other restauran"

"The food was spectacular! I had the rainbow beet salad, siamese ravioli and creamy polenta. The bread was warm - right out of the fireplace - and delicious. The atmosphere was quite nice. The only problem I had was that it was a little too dark to read the menu comfortably. The waiter helped out though, and brought his flashlight to the rescue!"

"Beware of how wine is sold. Don't tell me a restaurant with an excellent reputation will only serve wine by the glass if bottles are opened. Your only option is buy a half bottle. It a rip off ploy. However, if you don't drink wine, and want either a cocktail or beer the food is very good."

"Many people probably think that this restaurant is very good. However, although this may be idiosyncratic, The particular tastes just don't truly appeal to me. I feel they are just a bit lacking in terms of deliciousness. Admittedly, I am a tough critic but do know what tastes really good to me. It is a lovely, aestheticlly pleasing restaurant."

"The food at Ciano was very good but the service was extrememly disappointing. I would love to say that I will eat there again but I would be hard pressed to return due to the overall service throughout the night. I went for a birthday dinner and it was highly recommeded. Drink orders were slow, food orders were slower, wines listed were not available, etc. It was quite an expensive meal and the service was not at all on par with the quality of the food."

"Everything was fabulous! Food, wine, service. We wanted to lick our plates, but that would not have been appropriate in this very classy restaurant! We found it from a recent Food & Wine magazine article. Wow, so happy we did."

"The food was delicious and the atmosphere pleasant for a nice romantic evening.
My main complaint is that the food came too fast. The servers were very professional, but you could tell they wanted us out in time for the late sitting. Practically as soon as we ordered our first course arrived, with no pauses between successive courses. All in all a pleasant experience, but one that felt a little packaged."

"The thing we noticed first about the restaurant was its ambiance. Lighted candles and a dealer setting made for a very romantic dinner. Once seated, we also noticed that our waitress was very nice and throughout the meal she made sure out experience was a favorable one. Lastly, the food (whole reason for being there) was great. I would definitely suggest the lamb, veal meatballs, and duck bolagnase as a few items to try. Very very good. Would definitely recommend this place if you have the money to spend."

"My wife and I had dinner on St. Valentine's Day. The service was friendly and knowledgable, but intermittent which was understandable given the volume they had that day. Creative food, presented well, in a nice, warm setting."

"Very friendly staff and service was excellent. Everyone seemed happy that you were dining with them and the host Roberto was on top of everything being done. Their half bottle wine approach is something every restaurant should adopt, as it allows two people to select different wines or share different wines with different parts of the meal. Atmosphere is wonderful!"

"I've been to Ciano a number of times and always enjoyed the excellent food and friendly and attentive staff. In fact, the hostess even accommodated an additional guest at the last moment. The only problem we and everyone else at the restaurant had this evening was the temperature. Unless you were lucky enough to be located directly across from the open kitchen, you were compelled to keep your coat on. It was frigid, apparently they were having a thermostat problem. I hope this is not recurring and they get this problem corrected as soon as possible."

"Showed up at 8 for an 8pm reservation. Was told the table was finishing dessert and coffee, so our party of 4 waited by the coatroom. After 15 minutes, we again inquired of the hostess and were told the table was settling up its bill. My husband asked to speak to a manager. The owner came by and repeated that the table was settling up. Meanwhile 2 more groups of people with 8pm reservations had now joined us at the coatroom. After another 15 minutes we again approached the owner whose words were, "this business is not an exact science." We were finally seated at 8:45pm with a glass of free, warm sparkling something. Despite the extremely high prices, it was very busy, so I guess they can get away with overbooking this way."

"Want a quick trip to Italy on a cold afternoon? From the moment we entered Ciano, the staff was attentive, the ambience perfect, a rustic setting, fire in the fireplace, warm bread, and a good Italian red in front of us. The food was delicious - you can't go wrong with any of the signature dishes or the pasta, all home made and beautifully sauced. I wish we had been able to sample more of the menu. The scallop appetizer was delicious, as were the delightful meatballs and polenta. And, again, the pasta dishes were remarkable. The bread comes warm and with a slight char from the fireplace - also a delight on a winter afternoon. If you haven't been, we highly recommend it!"
