"This is a great spot if you are in the Union Square area for lunch. We thought the food was quite good. I had expected typical French not-so-great cafe service, but we had a lovely young server who did a nice job. It's my favorite place to lunch in the area."

Review 2 for Cafe de la Presse

Overall Rating 2.0 out of 5 (Fair)
"Both food and service have declined over the past few months. Price:quality ratio no longer favorable; e.g. $12 for an asparagus side salad which consisted of 5-6 asparagus, about 1/4 of a heart of romaine and a few pieces of peeled tomato. Also coffee consistently luke warm; hamburger cool and overcooked."

Review 4 for Cafe de la Presse

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"A french twist to the mostly traditional American breakfast fare. Our group ordered a variety of dishes but we all agreed the food was superb. Our waitress was extrememly energetic and friendly. Dining area was light and comfortable. Reasonably crowded but not too noisy. Also great for just a cup of coffee."

Review 5 for Cafe de la Presse

Overall Rating 2.0 out of 5 (Fair)
"We waited quite a while for our server (like over 15 minutes) just to acknowledge we were there. Food was just okay (sort of bland) but a great location (near Union Square) as a weekend brunch destination. Unless you like airline liquor mixtures, don't get the Bloody Mary."

Review 7 for Cafe de la Presse

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"Went to Café de la Presse for some pre-theater dining. Prix fixe was available, but preferred to order from the à la carte menu. This is one of the few French restaurants in the entire city where some (but not all) of the entrées live up to the appetizer and dessert selections. The Boeuf Bourguignon was rather simplistic, but the Filet de Bar (sea bass) was the best sea bass I've ever had in any restaurant. They also have a great dessert menu. I will absolutely eat here again!"

Review 8 for Cafe de la Presse

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"There was only one draw-back: it was stated in the reservation that it was my mom's 91st birthday. We have been to CdlP for years. Nothing was done as a surprise for her. Nothing. In the past there would be a small something with a candle. Her nephew and his wife took us all to brunch. They liked the place, food, atmosphere, etc. but were also surprised that her 91st wasn't even a slight factor of interest.

Where is that personal touch CdlP has been known for in the past?

Thanks,

Ms. d'Holbach

Review 12 for Cafe de la Presse

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"Service was best I've had there although it's always really nice.
I love the ambience and it's a place you can here yourself thing and conversation is actually possible.

Sometime the salads are underdressed for me--like the nicoise.
And the butter lettuce sometimes gets too mustardy for my taste but all in all I like it and would take business colleagues and friends there.

Review 13 for Cafe de la Presse

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"Nice interior, reminescent of a Parisian cafe. The service was a bit slow and unattentive. Our waiter left us for 20 minutes after explainng the specials sowe had to flag him down to order cocktails--the place was not busy. However, after that, he was attentive, friendly, and professional. I was epxecting a bit more of a fun vibe on Sat. nite--must be the economy."

"On a sunny day this is a best out door bite, and on a rainy one, a bowl of French Onion soup and Frise salad is perfect. This is a regular spot for a meal or a bite and even just to sit with an international magazine and wine or cappuccino.. it works for any casual occasion."

Review 17 for Cafe de la Presse

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"The menu was small, but the food more than made up for the limited selection. Even with the small menus though, I did find a few dishes that I wanted to try. It was very crowded but great eating! I had the croque monsieur and ate every single bite. My lunch companion also had every single bite of his quiche Lorraine. The only downside was that I had to ask for ice with my water, which admittedly, was very much in keeping with the feel of a real French cafe."

"Cafe de la Presse is one of the few places that has been around for a long time that keeps finding ways to get even better. Review 20 for Cafe de la Presse

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"We have been a number of times, the service is always professional and the food is consistently amazing. We both started with the Salad w/Petite Lardons. He had the duck confit, I had the roasted chicken. Both were just as good as they have been on previous occasions.
It was a very lovely meal. I like that a diner can either have a nice leisurely meal, or a quick in & out. The server will adapt to the pace you want.

"6 "over-the-Hill" women ate here and we enjoyed every minute. We were probably the oldest in the restaurant, but we didn't feel it. Review 28 for Cafe de la Presse

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"Cafe de la Presse, located at one of San Francisco's great crossroads, across the street from the Chinatown Gate, offers satisfying bistro food, a lively ambience and a great street scene from its many windows. Add to those attractions their wonderful selection of French and English periodicals and the fact that they are open on Christmas and New Year's Day. I would have rated the service excellent - most of it was - were it not for the furtive guy who kept grabbing for our plates and succeeded in swiping our bread before my companion had finished more than half his steak frites. He didn't succeed in clearing us from our table, since we'd planned on coffee and dessert. The memory of him might keep us away next time."

"I love Cafe de la Presse when I am alone: french onion soup, escargot, and a voka martini with olives then sitting right by the bay window, people watching, journal writing and daydreaming, the word is "perfection". But then I went on Christmas Day with my family for a champagne brunch, things were just "fair". So let's just say I will be back ALONE."

"I thought the food was really low end considering the prices. It's strange to pay over $100 for a bottle of champagne and then drink it with sub-par food. This is San Francisco and Cafe de la Press needs to re-think quality unless they want to be a tourist only destination."

"We were there for Christmas Dinner. It was a fixed menu which was not available for viewing before the day itself and the people seated next to us said that they were not told it was a fixed menu when they arrived as walk-in diners. My companion and several people next to us had the lobster and scallops (I'm not sure if it was a bisque or stew) - a couple complained that there's was only luke warm, one person had sand and everyone had only two quite small pieces of lobster. None of us would return."

Review 37 for Cafe de la Presse

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"For a special holiday, it is a good idea to get clarification as to what time the special menu begins. We called the restaurant to get a copy of the Christmas menu (which never came), stating that we had reservations at 2:30 p.m. The gentleman who answered the phone didn't tell us that the Christmas dinner menu didn't start until 5:30, even though he knew we were coming earlier. Had we known we would be selecting from the regular lunch/brunch menu, we would have changed our reservation time."

Review 44 for Cafe de la Presse

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"Everything was fine and the food was done very well but there weren't too many things that were different and outstanding on the menu. It seems strange to go to a French cafe and see that the most ordered item (judging from the tables around us) was the hamburger! I had the chevre salad which was excellent and also the croque monsieur; I wasn't told that the sandwich came with a salad (nor was that apparent from the menu) so I ended up with two salads!"

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"I organized a group of women to have brunch here before looking at the Union Square holiday decorations. It was great because the restaurant was decorated with holiday lights, wreaths and ornaments which put us in the holiday spirit! I had the mushroom quiche with salad and mimosas and they were great! The service was excellent!"

Review 48 for Cafe de la Presse

Overall Rating 2.0 out of 5 (Fair)
"We went on Thanksgiving so the menu was limited. However of the 3 dishes we tried only one was worth noting - the duck confit. The sea bass was average and their attempt at an American turkey dinner was downright disappointing. Either do it right, or do it french, but don't make it taste like a Swanson's TV dinner. When you are paying $50+/person especially on a special night like Thanksgiving, the quality of the food needs to live up to the price."
