Restaurant Reviews for Mockingbird Bistro

Mockingbird Bistro reservations Mockingbird Bistro

1985 Welch
Houston, TX 77019

Mockingbird Bistro Wine Bar combines Sheely’s Texas roots with a style of cooking that he knows well, that of the Riviera, specifically the French Riviera. At Mockingbird, the feel of the menu is "country-French-meets-American-market." Sheely updates the menu seasonally to take advantage of the ingredients available at-market, as well as to give him the freedom to exercise his creativity.

Review 6 for Mockingbird Bistro

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"A friend and I treated ourselves to a Valentine's evening meal at the Mockingbird Bistro. Despite being one of the busiest restaurant holidays of the year, we were seated immediately upon our arrival. We were awestruck to find two vases of flowers waiting for us at the table, sent by my friend's husband (absent on business), one vase each. A special holiday menu was presented featuring some of the Bistro's signature dishes. The service was exceptional, personal yet discrete. The food was exquisite. If there was one slightly weak point, it was the desserts. While they were good, they were not as amazing as the rest of the meal. Tucked away in a lovely neighborhood setting, replete with rich, serene ambiance, this is a culinary gem. 5 Stars!"

Review 7 for Mockingbird Bistro

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"The very good ambiance and food were somewhat spoiled by dissapointing service. My wife and I were happy to enjoy a drink at the bar while a table became available but were suprised to see several couples who arrived after us seated ahead of us. It was clear from the subsequent reaction of the hostess that we had been forgotten. Once seated we sat for some time before being attended to. Other tables were served a 'complimentary' hors d'oeuvres and a basket of bread - we were not. Towards the end of the evening, 5 wait staff began to "hang out" near the main door. I observed two of them clearly discussing (with gestures) the rear end of a female customer who had just left. Really unprofessional bunch in my view."

Review 10 for Mockingbird Bistro

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"We had a lovely evening. For us, the table that we were given was perfect--tucked away in a little nook. We could enjoy our conversation. Mockingbird is great for acoustics (not found in many restaurants these days). Our waiter was very witty; we appreciated his humour. The downside? It would be nice if there would be some menu choices for 'alternative e.g. healthy' eaters. A vegetarian/vegan choice. A tofu entree. Also the prices keep this (for us) a restaurant for special occasions only."

Review 11 for Mockingbird Bistro

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"We happened to be there on Valentine Day and it was super busy but our service was amazing. I wish I had gotten the waiter's name because she was terrific-- very attentive but not annoyingly so. It was a prix fix menu and the choices were delicious.

It is quickly becoming one of our favorite places to dine in Houston.

Review 13 for Mockingbird Bistro

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"Mockingbird Bistro continues to be a favorite, with dishes some of the best we've ever tasted. We never like to be rushed, but our last visit was a bit too leisurely (over two and a half hours for a simple three course meal and a single bottle of wine). May have been the day before Valentine's Day crush; otherwise a wonderful evening and we will continue to have Mockingbird Bistro on our short list!"

Review 15 for Mockingbird Bistro

Overall Rating 2.0 out of 5 (Fair)
"Not impressed, and unlikely to return. Tomato basil soup was good, but the other food was certainly not worth the price ($29 strip steak, for example, was so-so). Restaurant refused to honor a gift certificate we had, claiming that it was valid only for dinner, which we thought we should have qualified for. (We were there after 3pm when the brunch was supposedly over and we spent over $130.) Guess that's their call to make, but certainly wasn't very friendly. They encouraged us to return again and use it at night -- fat chance. Houston offers much better food and service."

Review 16 for Mockingbird Bistro

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"We both enjoyed our Valentine's Day brunch at Mockingird Bistro. The food was excellent & the setting was quiet enough for conversation. We were allowed to linger at the end of the meal--which is not the case in some restaurants. The Bistro is a little pricey for everyday dining, be we do try to support this fine restaurant as often as possible."

Review 26 for Mockingbird Bistro

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"Interesting, neighborhood location makes for a casual and refined experience. High ceilings and deep colors serve to make the space seem less crowded, and the ambient noise isn't obtrusive. The wine list is extensive with some interesting choices, although not much is available at the low end. Service was excellent - no issues with timing, attentiveness, etc. Our appetizers (crispy oysters) were innovative and tasty. The duck was juicy, if a bit tough, but the rice that came with it was fantastic. The aged ribeye was a bit fatty, but with a nice braise and good sides. Got out just shy of $300 for two, and I would say the price was about right. Not the meal of our lives, but great food in a nice location."

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"The food was excellent!!! Our waiter was kind but we had a hard time getting him back to our table. The maître d' ended up checking on us more than our waiter. We also requested not to be placed by the kitchen. We arrived and the restaurant was fairly empty. We were immediately taken to the table right next to the kitchen. I wondered if they even read the reservation request. We had to ask for another table. We can not deny the food really was worth going for and going back for."

Appetizers - mussels and Ceasar salad (both were outstanding)

Dessert: Bitter sweet chocolate tart ( oh my goodness!)
Wine: Sancerre (Pretty good)
Champagne: Perrier (Awesome)

I have been several yimes and it is always great! Try the spicy ceviche when they have it. It is to die for!

"Atmosphere, service, were nice and food was good. Is it worth the price? Hardly. I had the opportunity to visit RDG Annie on Satruday night and the food was excellent, just as it was at Mockinbird, but for a more reasnable price. I did enjoy Mockingbird and would come back, but only for special once a year occasions, not on a regular basis as I will with RDG Bar Annie."

"We ate in the wine room, too brightly lit and not a very warmly decorated room, especially for the relatively high prices. None of the six at our table particularly liked the food, several dishes sent back as lukewarm. Service was only fair, maybe due to the fixed 20% tip on parties of six."

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"The ambience is great and would suit a group or a romantic evening. As our experience was New Year's Eve, there was a fixed menu but the options on that were fantastic. Our party sampled one of each and shared. Rolando, our server, did a fantastic job and was entertaining to boot. We will definitely go back!"

Review 40 for Mockingbird Bistro

Overall Rating 2.0 out of 5 (Fair)
"There were 3 of us for my sister's birthday dinner last Friday at 8. The restaurant's host staff was courteous and sat us promptly. The waiter took our orders however, he was usually not the one bringing or presenting the food to us. We ordered 2 off menu beef tartares, 1 with cheese and 1 without. Both came without cheese and there was too much food. The waiter should've told us. Entrees came and again the food is blah - definitely not worth $40-$50 a plate. Truffle fries was very greasy, they almost seem like they were badly fried then doused with truffle oil. The highlight of dinner was the chocolate torte - very delish. The bill was $400 for 3 with 1 bottle of wine. Definitely not worth it at all. I would not be going back."

Review 41 for Mockingbird Bistro

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"Mockingbird's food was, as always, very tasty. The special New Year's Eve menu had several good selections to choose from in each course. Price was a bit steep considering the size of the portions of some of the choices. I was very disappointed in several of the dishes on the New Year's Eve menu. I ordered the lobster risotto and the steak and lobster entree. The risotto was delicious, but was severely lacking in lobster - only a small shrimp-sized piece on top of the serving. The steak was delicious and about the right size. However, the "lobster" consisted of a puff pastry cup filled with sauteed vegetables and another small shrimp-sized piece of lobster as a decoration on top. To me this was false advertising."

Review 42 for Mockingbird Bistro

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"The service was very good. From the time we arrived we were in the focus of our waiter and the table/food service attendant. The waiter made a mistake in the first selection of the wine (wrong year from the wine list) and he promptly made a correction. The food arrived promptly and at the proper temperature.
Two of our party of four had the special of the day (a pork chop) and were delighted. I had a lightly braized split tuna filet and it was superb. The fourth member had a salad and soup combo and finished it all without any comment (a good sign for him)!
We all shared a dark chocolate dessert that was gone before it had time to cool off.
The walkout cost was a bit pricey at $312 for the four of us, but it was worth it.

Review 44 for Mockingbird Bistro

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"Still one of Houston's most inventive and consistently reliable upscale restaurants. France meets upscale American cuisine. Menu changes often with an emphasis on fresh and local ingredients- a real plus. An impressive wine list with outstanding, quality selections, many of which are off-the-beaten path. Competent, friendly service as well.
Only drawbacks are those mentioned by at least one other reviewer: prices have gone up since the last time we dined here: Expect $30-$45 for entrees and $10 for appetizers and desserts. Wine prices are a little more reasonable- expect about 2x retail. All in all, a wonderful meal, great ambiance and attentive service ... exactly what I've come to expect, especially at this price.

Review 54 for Mockingbird Bistro

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"Vastly improved from two years ago. The mussels were fantastic. Ceasar salad and onion soup very good. Main courses not as good. The steak (strip) with fries was disappointing. Steak was tough with too much gristle. Not up to the prices. The fries were very good. First time ordered steak here and probably the last. Tuna steak, on the other hand, was good. Desserts, pumpkin cheesecake and a berry dish, were solid. The wine list had some good choices and represented decent value. The restaurant could receive five stars for food with an improvement in the main courses."

Review 56 for Mockingbird Bistro

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"Gorgeous setting, solid service and the atmosphere is quiet and calm where one (or a group) can have a reasonable conversation. The food was good, not great, particularly for the price. The foie gras was the most interesting dish in our meal, perferctly cooked and creative mix of flavors. The entrees were OK. The sirloin chef special was cooked perfectly, but the cut of meat was nothing special for a top end restaurant. The scallop entree was also perfectly cooked, but the risotto was overcooked detracting some from an otherwise excellent dish."

"Tried the Mockingbird Bitro years ago and found it to be o.k. -- Lovely ambiance, service is good, but the food isn't to die for. Recently went back, the same is true and found the prices to be high. Nice, convenient, neighborhood bistro - but not amazing. Three hundred dollars for a casual, and acceptable tasting, dinner for four (without one bottle of wine) is a bit much."

Review 72 for Mockingbird Bistro

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"I had been gone for two weeks on business, and was looking for a nice place to spend the evening with my fiance. We had talked about going to Mockingbird for some time, so decided this was the night. It proved to be just perfect. I had the onion soup (wonderfully rustic and not too difficult to eat) and the duck. The breast and the leg had been cooked separately. The leg had been braised and the breast had been seared to perfection (not too dry), and both were served over a bed of wild rice with cranberries and cheese. My fiance had the scallops over mashed potatoes (sorry, don't remember what was in the potatoes but they were very tasty) with a side of garlicky spinach. Service was very good but not too good--they let us enjoy ourselves."
