Morimoto New York
Morimoto is the New York City interpretation of Executive Chef Masaharu Morimoto’s namesake Philadelphia restaurant that is co-owned with restaurateur Stephen Starr. Designed by world renowned architect Tadao Ando, the restaurant’s entrance features the world’s largest Japanese Noren curtain set against a massive façade of austere steel. Inside is an extraordinary open kitchen surrounded by a 24-seat sushi bar where diners can watch Morimoto and his chefs at work. On every level of the restaurant guests enjoy the elaborate menu where East meets West. Glass partitions create a private atmosphere between tables and a wall made of 17,000 spring water bottles add a touch of New York drama to this tranquil atmosphere. Guests have the option to dine on the top floor or congregate in the lower lounge for cocktails and snacks.

"We had the omasake menu for the whole table. The food was vibrant, unbelievably tasty and creative. Recommend it to everyone who is not on a budget or wants to celebrate a special occasion like we did.

"Friday night at 10pm had to wait for my reservation at the bar. The bartenders were too busy preparing drinks for the tables to serve the only two people sitting at the bar! After 15+mins (still no drinks) our table was ready - we were crammed into the corner next to a very large pillar - it was so dark and claustrophobic we had to move. Again back to the bar and after yelling out for a bottle of wine, we got served. Once seated, we ordered the lobster fritters (delicious) and the rock shrimp (awesome) - next we had sushi rolls which were very good - a little heavy on the sesame seeds which coated all varieties of rolls. Overall the food was great and I would go back just to have the rock shrimp again."

"The waiter dropped a glass by my foot and did not even apologize before walking away. I cursed and the hostess came to apologize some minutes later. Fortunately my foot was not cut up my shoes were wet. No offer for a discount was made.
The bill came out to $400 for 2 people. Food was ok but heavy on the sauces. A little too much fusion going on for my tastebuds. Fish selections were pretty typical.
Overall unimpressed with service and underwhelmed by food."

"Postives: excellent server, creative menu
Negatives: inexperienced hostesss with an attitude tried to force us to the basement bar, "we don't see people until everyone in the party is here". Please, it was 6pm, the place was empty and 1 of the 2 couples had arrived. Assinine behavior.
Server was outstanding; knowledgable, articulate and pleasant. Food tasted great, beautiful presentation, but all parties were sick that night; either vomiting or diarehea."

"I really like Marimoto and only go here when I have some cash to burn and want to eat the best. We sat once at the sushi bar and next time I would do that again. This time we was sat next to a large white wall in the corner with no real view of the rest of the dining room. If the food wasn't so good I would of been annoyed. Even if you reserve a table be sure to let them know you don't want to sit in the back corner. Any who even with that disappointment, the shrimp tempura is addictive, the hamachi is devine and the chef's sushi selection is always amazing (so is the sashimi). lastly I can't help but mention how much i love the bathroom."

"morimoto has always treated me well. i've been there 6 times in total. i have had some of the best sea urchin and tuna that i have ever had while dining there, and the drinks are normally good (though i tend to indulge a bit too much every time i am there as the sake is quite nice a well). i prefer getting a bunch of appetizers and particularly care for the crispy rock shrimp tempura and oyster foie gras offerings. the only let down i ever had was the chef's choice as it was both costly and not to my liking despite combining it with a sake pairing...ended up ordering some of the best sashimi i've had in nyc thereafter though given that the chef's choice didn't do it for us. i have had some great memories here with both friends and family."

"I took my partner their on our anniversary. We went on a Monday night and made reservations. It wasn't packed, but we weren't able to get a table to see the kitchen. The staff was amazing, very professional. We ordered 3 appetizers, 2 entrees and 2 desserts. At least 5 different people brought us food, and each one explained what we were about to eat. The waitress was very kind and answered all of our questions perfectly. It was a perfect night! The food was wonderful and expertly explained both before and after we ordered. I can't say enough good things and we will definitely go back again, and recommend to friends!"

"I had dinner at Morimoto several times. The quality of food and service have always been good and consistent. However, the last time I was there, I had a kinda annoying experience at the beginning. Even though I made my reservation through OpenTable days in advance, the host took us to the most distant/dark spot in the entire room. There were tables available on the main side, so I had to talk to her to change our table. In the end, she checked with the manager and took us to a different one. They should at least be more careful with groups who made reservations days in advance. You shouldn't be fighting to get a better table in a restaurant like this."

"I expected the best, I got overpriced for mediocre. The fish was fishy, texture so-so, service was a huge let down. That should have at least been great. My Morimotini, was a fabulous idea with wasabi vodka, sake, and cucumber, some of my favorite things, but all I could taste was cucumber sake. Won't be back."

"We booked this restaurant well in advance prior to commencing our holiday from Australia. Glad we did! The food was excellent, as was the service. I recommend the lobster fritters and the sushi. My partner enjoyed his very tender wagyu steak which was cooked to perfection. Totally recommended and would visit again when we are in NYC."

"Went for our anniversary. It was quiet at first but then became loud and crowded as the night wore on. Atmosphere was good though. Our waiter and other service were wonderful. Foie gras special appetizer was hubby's fav but so-so for me, too many competing flavors and textures. Tuna sashimi, spicy salmon roll and special cherry trout roll were amazing. Spicy yellowtail roll, not so much. Sea bass, while okay flavor, was surprisingly overcooked and a bit dry. Extensive sake menu, which was a nice change of pace. Next time I think I would just make a beeline for the sushi bar."

"The only reason why I gave this a "fair" was because we were seated for about a half hour then literally (I asked) a party of 37 was seated next to us, ruining our dinner and those around us. They were loud based on sheer numbers so we ate as fast as we could, skipped another glass of wine, dessert and tea and ran out of there. It was supposed to be a nice dinner for two that was ruined by having such a large party seated in an open area (vs. a private room or sectioned off area). The ambiance, service and food was good, I suppose but we were so disappointed, we didn't enjoy a thing. What a waste of time, money and an evening out. We won't go again."

"I definitely would like to return to this place it was really good. The sushi with soft crab was really good . Toro tuna tartar is a must. Service was just perfect. Everyone was polite and smiling. And they know the menu so good that you can rely on their recommendations. I was there with m husband celebrating our anniversary and even the manager came to congratulate us.

"The Waygu beef carpaccio had a light flavor enhanced by the micro cilantro, the Lobster fritters were full of flavor. I had the Duck Duck Duck and each duck was amazing in its own way. The Iron Chef soup was light and had clean flavors and the White Lilly Martini was ADDICTING and had to stop myself at 2. I would make the drive again from Louisville, KY just to eat here."

"I don't think the food was all that special, and it's very overpriced. Granted, I had a couple of maki rolls, but I have enjoyed high-quality, creative maki rolls in the suburbs of Chicago too. My companions who had the trout enjoyed it. I guess if I had tried something less typical and more unique to Chef Morimoto's culinary POV I might have been more impressed.
The assorted appetizer was scanty and very overpriced. The cocktails and wine were OK, again nothing special. Dessert was good, but not mind-blowing.
The setting was lovely, the plexiglass screens really did cut down on the noise level, and the location was great. I enjoyed getting together with a childhood friend and his partner more than dinner itself.
I will not return."

"Eclectic menu, with an unusal interpretation of many sushi standards. The Morimoto 7-course tasting menu seemed a bit overpriced for $125, especially since the portions in each course were tiny. Seven courses sounds like a lot until one sees how little food there is. The ambiance was modern and energetic and the service was excellent. We must have had nearly 10 staff members serve our meals and politely explain what everything on the plate was. The presentation was definitely a sight to behold. Very creative and colorful."

Had the Morimoto sashimi for appetizer - interesting tastes and high eye-appeal, spicy salmon roll as an intermezzo - nice, nothing that special, and had the miso sea bass with Japanese eggplant and avocado tempura - the fish was prepared perfectly, delicious from the first bite to the last, the eggplant and avocado were nice side dishes to match the fish, though the tempura was a bit on the soggy side. Overall, an excellent meal. Sat at the sushi bar and that was a show. Nicely decorated."

"I have always wanted to dine at Morimoto NYC. Chef Morimoto is one of my favorite chefs of all time. It was my mother, her boyfriend and my first time.
