Located in the heart of the historic Charleston Peninsula, Southend Brewery & Smokehouse specializes in regional cuisine & exquisite, custom-crafted beers, served in a rustic, kid-friendly setting to the tune of great, live music. We provide our guests with the Charleston restaurant experience for lunch, dinner and beyond with a variety of American foods, such as wood-oven pizzas, fresh fish and specialty in-house smoked barbecue ribs.
Southend Brewery & Smokehouse has been rated the #1 Microbrewery in the South, and this is manifested in the beautiful glass encased "brewhouse" in the center of the building. We also feature Charleston's only indoor glass elevator, which you can take to the 3rd floor bar for darts and billiards, or the 2nd floor banquet hall, perfect for your Charleston event. The Brewery frequently hosts reunions, receptions, wedding rehearsal dinners and birthdays complete with a variety of menus and catering to suit the occasion.
"Great food - fit our taste buds perfectly. Good drnks. We had the chicken nachos - outstanding. I had the turkey and brie sandwich - quite tasty. Other had burgers and a pizza. Everyone was stuffed after the nachos that we had a lot of take home food. Sides were mac and cheese - which was delicious. A do over would have had us just doing apps. Lots of large parties but noise was fine. Would definately go again."

"Planned a birthday celebration dinner for our family. Chose this restaurant based on its reviews. Spoke with the hostess over the phone about the birthday celebrations and not being seated near the kitchen. When we arrived the hostess was not friendly in her greeting, we were shown to our booth that was closest to the kitchen door. When asked about an alternative, she said it would be too crowded. We had to insist on a different table and she wasn't pleased. On a bright note our waiter was very friendly and helpful. He recommended the smoked wings which were awesome and the fried green tomatoes were also a big hit although a bit small in size and amount for the price. That's where the positive aspects end. Main courses were not good at all"

"The overall service was great, our waitress was super sweet and the food was great. However, we organized an event there (working with staff for about a week and a half) but when I got there, NO ONE knew what was going on... it was a disappointing since we had to contact people outside of the restaurant while still entertaining the group we brought.... and trying not to make ourselves look bad since we thought the plans were taken care before we arrived."

"The menu was diverse - pizza to brisket and meatloaf. The food was good and our server was very attentive. The mac-n-cheese was a big hit. The Smokehouse was a very busy place on a Saturday night. I would definitely recommend reservations."

"First time eating here and menu was expansive with many choices. The atmosphere was kickin with a three piece jazz band playing in the front room. Unfortunately we were seated where we couldn't see them. Food was great as well as service. We'll be back !!"

"Food was interesting, delicious, but the menu seemed a bit like a fancier Applebees rather than and individual setting in downtown CHS. Beer was blande, although the Stout was probably the only different-than-norm of the variety. Service was great and I hear the upstairs floors are worth a look."

"Food was excellent and the restaurant was beautiful. They also had plenty of room to accommodate large groups. In fact, there was a wedding reception being held upstairs and it did not hinder other diners from enjoying a delicious meal. The only complaint I have is in regards to our server. She acted as if having a table was an inconvenience to her - she stopped by our table once to refill our drinks and then only returned when it was time to bring the bill. So disheartening! Other than that, it was a great experience!"

"Wonderful, relaxed and friendly. Our waiter, Ross, was fantastic! Food was familiar, but upscale with a twist. Must try the BBQ wings as an appetizer. Was slightly disappointed that the dessert menu was different than what they have on their website....but I got over it :) We will return for sure!"

"The resturant was very nice and the building in which it resided was elegant and historic. There was a wide veriaty of food and everyone in our party loved the food and beer. The online reservation worked great! We certainly will visit the resturant again."

"This is a big restaurant with lots of activity (and noise!). There were many options for southern food on the menu. The food was good. Service was a bit slow on our Friday night visit. However, it was about what I expected of a brewpub."

"Had dinner there with kids while visiting Charleston. Good compromise choice with something to make each of us happy. Food was good. Server was very attentive but not intrusive. Wife and I did enjoy the inhouse brews. There were only 4 from which to choose but was not an issue as it was a well chosen sampling. Would go back again for lunch or dinner. Great location with lots of charm in terms of the building (inside and out) and the neighborhood. Easy walk there from our hotel."

"I'm pretty easy to please, but this place was a real disappointment. The beer sampler was good but that was about the only thing that they did well. The fried green tomatoes had a weird topping with cheese crumbles and no sauce, the chicken fried steak tasted like it had been frozen, and the shrimp and grits had a weird taste like old bacon grease. We love southern cooking and southern flavors, but these were complete failures!"

"We came on Valentine's Day and it was pretty dead.... our server was great but you could tell we were her last table. She literally ran her cashout right in front of us. The menu they offered for the night was OK. Would have been better if the steak would have been cooked to the temp we ordered it and not the Rare Temp the cook insisted to the server would be OK for us. She even commented on how undercooked the steak was and the dessert was terrible. Chocolate Creme Brulee... sounds tasty but it was my. I would recommend this place to anyone wanting to try different beers.. but to watch the k iou Chen or oder food you wanted to eat a certain way, not even."

"I was a little underwhelmed at the food; I was expecting some great ribs and BBQ Brisket, but it was just OK. Our Server (Sarah) was nice and "Southern" Friendly, and everyone seemed to be having fun working there, which is always nice to see!"

"The ambiance would have been quite good had we not sat right next to the open kitchen with the staff screaming orders. I could see getting that table had we walked in off the street, but, with a reservation.....no, not acceptable."

"I"ve been a customer of the Southend Brewery a few times and once or twice when they were located in Charlotte. The prices are fair and the food is good. Of course the real draw to this location is the beer. I pride myself as being a pretty good judge of beer and the brewmaster here is obviously very talented. I"ve been to many microbrew restaurants and taprooms, and I feel that this particular one is one of my top five. The decor is tastefully done with respect to its former use as a warehouse. I didn't get to try the steaks but my date did say the She Crab soup was very good. I had the country fried steak and it was pretty good but I think I would have enjoyed my date's meatloaf more."

"The food was delicious, but the building, which is a big open brewery, is COLD! Get away from the tables at the front of the building. The staff says it is always either too cold or too hot in the winter and summer. Still, I would go because the food is very good for very reasonable prices. The beer is quite good, and a nice variety for a micro brewery."

"My wife and I were looking for a low key place for a good meal on the day of our arrival in Charleston, so we picked Southend Brewery and Smokehouse. The beers we had were very good and the food very tasty. This is a great restaurant for a nice relaxing meal and couple of good brews."
