Located in the heart of Old Town in the historic Crilley Warehouse, OVERWOOD is a wood-fired American kitchen and bar featuring modern interpretations of traditional classics. As the name implies, our kitchen is built around hardwood-fueled cooking (grill, oven & smoker) and we will use only the freshest and finest ingredients in every dish.

I don't mind paying for what I want. I do mind when the request is treated as an inconvenience for the kitchen, to the point that the upcharge is really more of a fine for making a special request.

"The food was very good. However, our service was not. The waiter essentially ignored our table for the entire meal and then messed up the billing - both splitting the checks and which cards to charge. He was busy, so I'd like to give him a break. However, his service really was that bad. Still worth a try though for the food and historical building."

"The food was okay and the service overall could have been better. The hostess, who I believe was doubling as a server, was very pleasant. I almost wish she was our actual server. The server we had seemed more interested in flirting with bar patrons than seeing how my table was functioning. We saw her so few times, I forgot she was even there.
For an entree, I had crab legs and I substituted the fries for asparagus which had a good smoky flavor but were overcooked. My friend had a rather dry salad and was almost halfway through before anyone asked if any other dressing was needed.
I might go back to give it another shot because I love the location and the actual ambience."

"A large group (20) was accommodated fairly well - the food was served quickly and everyone enjoyed their meal. However, the billing system the restaurant uses was cumbersome for the party: it didn't accommodate separate checks, and the checks received were grouped so we had to go around the table with a calculator to determine whose dinner and drinks were on which bill. This wouldn't have been as big a problem if I had been informed when I called the restaurant beforehand to confirm the reservation, or if the guidance provided by the wait staff when we were ordering was what was executed when the bills came."

"We've been to Overwood now for a couple of times, and we are really happy with it. They have a good menu, delicious food, good service, and nice surroundings! Everything that we've had has been delicious. The only thing the don't have is parking. That can be quite a challenge."

"The food was all overcooked... 2 NY strips and lamb chops. The vegetables were mushy and everything was oversalted. The server was brand new, so I can't speak to the normal flow of service. But our night took awhile because of it, although I'm definitely not upset about the server. He was nice and doing his best.
I liked the kids choices, healthier options over the usual fried mess. The wine was also nice. My husband ordered salmon and did not care for it. We told the waiter of our overcooked food, but did not send it back because we had already been there a long time and it was still edible."

"The food is good and the service is just fine. We like going there and it's always our default place. However, it's extremely noisy in there. The acoustics are terrible if you're trying to talk to the person(s) you're with. You wind up having to scream the whole time. A lot of families also come, which at times unruly children add to the already noisy environment. That's our main complaint. It's too dang noisy."

"This was about our fifth or sixth meal there, and we are looking forward to our next visit. The grilling is excellent, steak, ribs, chicken, and salmon, and I especially love the Port City Porter. It is a relaxed and relaxing atmosphere with people and kids and (outside) dogs."

"As always the food was good! We took some visitors there, and where a party of 6-and everyone was pleased with the food! Our waiter was nice and made sure we had what we needed! We had both fish and meat and we got it coocked the way we wanted it and she also had good recomandations:)"

"My wife and I dine at Overwood at least once each month. On Mother's Day we enjoyed the lunch buffet. The restaurant provides an excellent assortment on their occasional buffets and everything is fresh tasting and well prepared. On other occasions, entrees are delicious and their fire singed brussel sprouts are especially wonderful"

"We had a good time at brunch for Mother's Day. The food was very good, and our table for 8 which we had reserved was waiting for us. The only negative is that the main food draws on the buffet were always empty and they were not replenished quickly, so some of the people at our table left without having a main item from the buffet. That was disappointing considering the $26 per person price tag."

"I hadn't been to Overwood in several years so thought it would be a good place to revisit. I had one of the specials, red drum, served over cajun style grits. The grits were tasty but the fish was limp, kind of soggy or heavy, and non-descript. To be honest, i haven't had red drum before so perhaps that's the texture of it but the entire dish was underwhelming and not something i'd order again. I probably would have been better off ordering one of their big salads w/ a piece of grilled salmon, which i used to enjoy. Our waitress was efficient and friendly so that made for a pleasant experience but i would hesitate to recommend it to a friend and i'd have to be pursuaded to give it another try. I was disappointed to be disappointed!"

"To substitute Mac & Cheese for asparagus, we were charged a $2 up-charge, despite the fact that both items are the same price on the menu. We found this annoying. Also, they serve what appears to be a delicious pepperoni pizza, but only children are allowed to order it. These rules seem arbitrary, capricious and completely unnecessary. The food we ordered was delicious."

"This was our first visit to Overwood, and we went for brunch. Old Town Alexandria has a plethora of great restaurants, so it's a tough competitive market. We used to go to the Italian restaurant that was previously on the site. The wood brick decor is still there. The food was ok. The calamari was outstanding, the rest of the food was typical brunch - good, but not spectacular. Because the restaurant is a little off the beaten path, it was not crowded, and easy to get in."

"We were very disapointed with this restaurant. The meat was especially horid. I had the steak salad, which had some unidentifiable marinated meat on it. My daughter had the hangar steak, which although she ordered it medium rare, was overcooked and resembled nothing of a hangar steak. My husband had the "double" porkchop, which was thin and also overcooked. Our dinner guests were polite about their choices (Salmon, meatloaf, and ribeye), but we sensed they were not impressed. The only highlight of the dinner was the moderately priced wine list. It was by far the worst meal we have eaten at a restaurant in a long time. The bar seemed lively. It might be tolerable for drinks and bar food,but I would not go for a meal."

"Their steaks are the best thing on the menu. Salads and appetizers are good. "We love this restaurant, the service, and especially the food. The steak, garlic-smashed potatoes, and asparagus paired with a glass of Loosen Bros Reisling is divine. The noise level at this visit was so loud you can hardly hear yourself think, especially because the table we were seated at was next to the bar (and there was a big birthday group of 12 right next to us). Definitely a nice place to dine, good food, and located conveniently in Old Town Alexandria."

"We were there for lunch and the food was just ok. The soup was plentiful and ok. We also had grilled salmon salad and chicken tossed salad. The sizes were plentiful but the taste was just ok. Nothing special and definantly NOT a wow factor. It was not crowded and we were a couple of tables away from a table of 8 but it was really hard to hear, I would not want to try to have a conversation in there if the place was full."

"Easter Brunch at Overwood was wonderful. We arrived early and were among the first to enjoy the buffet, I cannot speak as to how well the buffet was managed into the morning hours, but the selection was large and very, very good. We especially enjoyed the French toast with Grand Marnier whipped cream. The buffet had a large selection of fruit, salads, hot items such as eggs benedict, smoked applewood bacon, and truly excellent corn beef hash. The only item we did not thoroughly enjoy was the cheddar grits - they seemed undercooked and the Cheddar flavor was very mild.
The atmosphere is good for families and groups due to the open floor plan and ample seating."

"Went for a family brunch in the morning, and couldn't have been happier. Our waiter was very accommodating to our needs, leaving us alone when we were chatting away, but were also very good to check in on us well before we needed anything without being intrusive. The food was delicious, mimosas and bloody marys well mixed, and the coffee was excellent! I highly recommend this for brunch. Even our picky eaters were happy!"

"We were here for Easter brunch. The main offering was the buffet, which in retrospect wasn't the best deal at $29.95, given that I really only enjoyed the French toast. As with many buffets, the food was lukewarm, & the offerings were limited. In particular the eggs were a bit watery. But my husband thoroughly enjoyed his food and the restaurant was extremely accommodating to young children -- my 2 year old even made a new friend!"

"The food was pretty good, but was really disappointed with the service. I understand that on a busy Saturday night, there are going to be some mix-ups, but to forget my daughter's entree and then argue with me about ordering it is completely unacceptable. We definitely won't be back until they can find some better servers."

"Good service, great food. Only negative was that we ordered white wine and it was brought to the table warm. Bottle had never bee chilled.we should have been offered another choice, but the waiter drop it in go a wine bucket and told us it would be chilled in 10 minutes. We ended up pouring our own over top of a bit of ice."

"The kitchen couldn't get our order right for a party of 7. They had to bring out multiple plates multiple times until they finally got it right. The waiter was pushy and most of us were cold for most of the meal. We've been to Overwood on multiple occasions and this wasn't the first time it's happened here. It seems that every time I've been to Overwood it's with a large party of 6 or 7 folks. I usually like the food, but this was brunch with my future in laws and my mother."

"Just a good, solid, tasty restaurant. Good food, at a reasonable price. Good draft list, as well. I would recommend sitting in the front room, though. We have been seated in the back (closer to the kitchen) a couple of times, and it's very dark, and not nearly as nice as the front room / bar area. Service is always friendly."
