Lüke San Antonio
San Antonio is now home to acclaimed Chef John Besh’s restaurant, Lüke, on the city's famed Riverwalk, Besh's first restaurant outside of his home state of Louisiana. The casual chic bistro features a menu of authentic Old World cuisine, combining classic German and French cooking techniques served in a warm and inviting space of stylish vintage interior, situated in San Antonio's popular downtown district.
At the helm of the kitchen of Lüke is Executive Chef John Russ, born and raised in New Orleans. At Restaurant August, Chef Russ began to form the relationship with John Besh and he learned the importance of forming relationships with farmers and fisherman, which would later be reinforced by his time working on farms in Alabama, New Hampshire, New York and Maryland. Chef Russ returned to the Besh Restaurant Group as Chef de Cuisine on the invitation of Chef Besh.
To complement its cuisine, Lüke offers an extensive wine list and beer selection.

"We had a great dinner. The wait staff was very knowledgable regarding their menu. Our only complaint was the music was so loud you could not hear the waiters unless they bent over almost next to your ear and carrying on any kind of conversation was almost non existant."

"Luke was a nice restaurant. Very loud, but food was good. The service lacked. The waiter was friendly, but extremely slow. Slow in taking the order and the food getting to the table was slow as well. I think the restaurant has great potential, but at this point it was just good not great."

"We dined at Luke on the river during lunch Mother's Day 2013. It was a gorgeous day & we requested and received a nice window table facing the river -had a great view. The nice service unfortunately ended when we sat down. The server was very congenial, but couldn't really describe the dishes beyond what was printed on the menu and some of the menu items are foodie dictionary worthy, but may not be recognizable to the ordinary patron.
The server also neither came back to fill our glasses, nor assisted in getting cream for coffee when asked, but was sweeping up a table instead of tending to the table still present.

"The food was quite good. Proportions were a little off (too much starch and sweet, not enough protein and fruit/veg in my dish), but delicious and genuinely Southern nonetheless.
Ambience is completely lacking. The restaurant was near empty when we arrived and they made the mistake of seating my little family at the worst table in the house -- by the working elevator and waiter's station in the middle of traffic. However they were gracious and moved us to a corner when I asked. Server was very nice, but I probably won't go back, the room is just too cold for me."

"Our meals were excellent and we both enjoyed exploring the many new flavors presented. We had the chef's three-course dinner; each was very well executed. We ordered strategically: each ordered differently so we could taste six of the nine offerings. Thanks for a pleasant evening."

"What a great time our group had before the theater. Our group of six thoroughly enjoyed all the food from drinks, to appetizers, to entrees, to dessert. Our group particularly enjoyed the quail and the burgers. The service was excellent and everyone was very helpful. Chef John Besh was very personable and spent some time with our group. This is our new favorite before the theater."

"It was a great first time for me and my party at Luke! The food was excellent and plentiful. Our waiter was very helpful with his knowledge of the menu and that helped us order food that we loved. We would definitely go again and recommend it as a river food restaurant to try."

"Eclectic choices, all excellent. Can't recommend the Crispy Alsatian Onion Tart enough. Amazing flavors. We arrived at 5:30 and were treated to 1/2 price wine and 50 cent empanades. The special Texas red fish was perfect. Service was also outstanding. After dinner the coffee was also notable. Reasonably priced for an upscale restaurant."

"We celebrated a coworkers military retirement here tonight. Everything was top-notch! The food was delicious, the service and the attention to detail were amazing and the extra plus - the valet parking discount. The was my first trip here and I will definitely be back ASAP."

"Blackened Drum and the beef tenderloin were very good but 2 in our party ordered the broiled "Fish". Mystery fish at that. Thick chuck of fish on a very good crab and lobster cannoli. The fish was dry and tasteless. Pretty disappointing. At least the Gulf oysters on the half shell didn't disappoint."

"Being born and raised in Louisiana and moving to Texas two years ago, I could careless about how famous Chef John Besh is... The Shrimp Etouffee was horrible. Shrimp Etouffee is severed over rice, not cheap, under cooked pasta. Although the shrimp were fresh and tasty, overall the dish was executed very poorly.
Lucky for me, the two of us each ordered a main course and asked for both to be split. The burger was phenomenal. There is no other word or words to describe it.
Now of course I hardly ever go to a restaurant like this without making sure it has both a full bar along with published specialty drinks. These handcrafted drinks are top notch.
I would absolutely recommend this place, no question.
New Orleans? Cajun? Creole? No Sir"

"Our dinner at LUKE was magical! They took very good care or us! I would say almost every employee in the restaurant stopped by our table to say Happy Anniversary. The manager gave us two complimentary appetizers, which were delicious!! Our server, offered suggestions of mixed drinks and a different type of beer than we had tasted. All choices were perfect! Food is great, atmosphere is wonderful and music set the tone of the evening!! When I commented on our Open Table reservation that it was our anniversaey, I honestly didn't think anyone would notice, care or acknowledge it! Thank you, LUKE, for treating us like Royalty for our anniversary!! It's nice to be pampered every now and then! :)"

"Luke provided us with an exellent dinner and decent service given that there was a Fiesta event going on in the restaurant and it was pretty busy. The noise level is a distraction.
I was a little shocked when I called the restaurant to tell them we would about 15 minutes late for our 6 pm reservation. I was told that if we were more than 10 minutes late our reservation would be canceled."

"Good restaurant - a few small details kept this from being truly great. For example, one person ordered the Steak and Frittes and the french fries were delivered to the table after he had already finished his steak. I had the fish (Drum) and it was overly salted. Otherwise, I'd recommend this as a pre or after theater choice."

"Dropped in for late night appetizers after the theatre. Our waiter was very attentive and helpful. The shrimp was good but needed a dipping sauce-also a very small portion given the price. The onion tart was really a flatbread/pizza concoction that really did not work. Decided not to risk trying the desserts. Price and value matter, but more importantly, the food has to taste GOOD!!!"

"I've had lunch here many times. This was the first time I had dinner. My companion and I both ordered steak. The food was exquisite, as usual. However, when we asked for the dessert menu, our server brought two different menus. One included creme brulee and one some sort of pot de chocolate. We asked which was correct; he said the one with creme brulee. So we both ordered it. He returned to say their pastry chef was absent and they were out of everything except bread pudding and ice cream. I had bread pudding; I wish I'd ordered ice cream. The bread pudding was almost the consistency of raw yeast roll dough. Nonetheless, I love Luke and will continue going there FOR LUNCH!"

"We ate at Luke last Friday night. The place was not packed, but we didn't arrive until 8:30pm. It's got the feel of a New Orleans French brasserie. We had for starters: Crispy Shrimp Bam Bam - so tasty! For dinner we had the rib-eye, which was cooked perfectly and melt-in-your-mouth, as well as the Drum Almandine - also very tasty. The service was personable and very good. I asked the waiter if the bartender could make a Ramos Gin Fizz. He came back with an assuredly YES and the anticipation began. This true NOLA drink is difficult to make and thus hard to find. But the bartender came through and stopped by our table to chat about the recent cocktail conference in SA where they made RGF for attendees. Wonderful evening."

"If you have enjoyed Luke in New Orleans, do not come here. Menu is not the same and was told it was to match local cuisine. If I wanted local cuisine, I would have gone somewhere else. Do themed restaurants like Pappadeaux change their menu to fit local cuisine? Try ordering a #2 Mexican dinner at Pappadeaux and see the response. The excuse was laughable. Anyway, if you are looking for a solid 3 star dinner of local fare, this is your place. The steaks where prepared to correct temperature and rabbit pate was delicious. However, SA is loaded with 3 star restaurants that compete and surpass this restaurant. Service was excellent and staff was courteous. Wine list is solid and meets everyones price range."

"Two people had shrimp n grits and agreed that the sauce was too salty and grits were fairly ordinary. We were seated at a table for six In the middle of the room and it was very noisy. Too noisy for conversation. Service on Saturday night was slow - it took almost an hour to get our meal."

"BBQ shrimp and grits were amazing everything else was just OK. Our meals came before our soup and when we asked about it we were told it was on it's way up. It came about the time we would have ordered dessert and it was no treat. It was supposed to be seafood but tasted very little in it."

"I was disappointed that they were out of bread for a long time. Additionally , they were out of a certain beer on the menu but didn't realize it until the waiter brought one out and 2 people in my party had ordered it. Food took forever and caused us to be late for a theater production even though I made reservations for 1hr 45 min before show and theater was 1 block away from the show. I really enjoyed my main dish ."

"There was a HUGE group upstairs that probably had a negative impact. It was VERY loud - more so than we expected even though it's listed as casual. Food seemed a little bit slow in coming and the steak was only warm while everything else was piping hot. That large group probably affected all of the above.
The drum amandine was great and the french fries with the steak were the best either of us have ever eaten. The ribeye was cooked perfectly and it was tender and tasty. The bread was plentiful and delicious. We didn't have appetizers/soup/salad/dessert and we didn't refer to the wine list. Prices were quite reasonable for the quantity and the quality of the food.
If we are in the area again, we would probably try Lüke on a weeknight."

"Luke was friendly and because the weather was not hot, it was pleasant to sit outside. The wait staff was outstanding! The chef sent out two items for us to "try" -- the shrimp "bam-bam" appetizer and the bananas fosters dessert. It was kind of them to offer these items "on the house", but neither dish was pleasant. Although my dining companion and i love both shrimp and bananas. We tasted, but did not eat either dish. My friend said she would not eat at this restaurant again. I liked the mussels so might be tempted to eat here again. The location is good for theater goers, but there were a lot of very young children so that makes it less than ideal for adults looking for an adult dinner night out prior to going to the theater."

"This could have been an excellent experience. I was impressed by the creative menu, the great location and the initial look and feel of the restaurant. Unfortunately, they missed the boat on some very simple basics. Our soup was served at less than lukewarm temperature. Wine was not served until after the soup because they did not have enough wine glasses and had to wait for the dishwasher. Consequently, the glasses were too warm to pour the wine into, so we were given the wine in a carafe and we poured it ourselves when the glasses cooled. Bread, which was promised when we ordered our drinks, did not arrive until just before our entrees. Apparently the kitchen was out of bread for a while. Bread pudding for dessert was delicious."

"The last time I had been to this restaurant was two years ago and the food just didn't seem as good as it had been in the past. Our waitress must have been fairly new although polite she lacked some basic waiting skills. I would probably give this restaurant an other try at a later date. Food was ok, ambiance is what really makes this restaurant."

The food was ok but all of it was cool to cold when we got it. Just nothing special. If you want a good Besh experience try the one in NOLA but skip SA"
