"It has taken a while but this latest tenant in this elegant space on 4th Street has finally gotten it right. Zut! is a terrific place to have lunch or dinner. The waiters are knowledgeable and the food is delicious. You cannot go wrong!"

"This place has a nice feel to it, comfortable and relaxed, yet the service is quick, knowledgable, and at the same time, we were given plenty of time to make decisions. The food was prepared to accommodate all the different tastes at the table, and an excellent and fairly priced bottle of wine was suggested and very much appreciated. Fun place for a celebration of any kind."

"Over the past year this has become our favorite restaurant in the Bay Area. While my wife an I prefer to go alone or with friends, regualarly bring our two young children. The staff couldn't be friendlier and more accomodating, even when the kids are a little out of hand. The food is always fantastic and the portions are generous. Same with cocktails."

"The restaurant is very attractive and well lit, with murals on the walls and a skylight. However, it was crowded and understaffed on Memorial Day, and very noisy. After a 30-minute wait for our orders I had an OK omelette, nothing exceptional. In generally sensitive Berkeley, I was surprised to see so few vegetarian entries (besides salads), and no substitutes for milk in coffee. I wouldn't go out of my way to return."

"Very attractive place and location, and excellent service. For these reasons, it's good for a special occasion. However, the lunch menu was a bit skimpy and didn't have very many vegetarian choices. Looking at the online menu, I'm wondering if they forgot to give us the appetizer menu. Two from our party had breakfast items that were very good. The others had pizza and salads. The beet salad was excellent if you like beets, but the mixed baby lettuces salad was mediocre. The Pt. Reyes pizza was very good, but the asparagus pizza was very dull. Prices were a bit high. Overall, I would not go out of my way to return, but might if I was in the neighborhood."

I went for lunch. Early it was quiet; later it was noisy. So if you're with someone who's hard of hearing, come early. If not, come any time. I had one of their soft drinks for an apéritif: sparkling water with orange blossoms and clear elderberry syrup. It was sublime, as celebratory as wine! Thank you, ZUT!"

"We were at Zut! For a retirement luncheon party on a very busy Jazz on Fourth Street event day. 12 people, all thrilled with the service, food, setting and day. The cocktails were exceptional- the Maltese was the all time favorite. Had to fight over the 3 desserts shared- the lava like budino chocolate cake, caramel custard like flan(?) and rhubarb crisp - thankfully nobody came to blows - definitely fun, delicious, great service/wait staff - been there twice now- would like to try dinner or before/after show cocktails and bar menu."

"My wife and I go to Zut regularly. The food is fresh and prepared well. From their fish dishes to their hamburgers, to their artisan pizzas, they never miss. The wait staff are consistently knowledgeable about the wine and have made good wine with food pairings a high percentage of the time. I always enjoy one their specialty cocktails to start. The Maltese is a crowd favorite. Until next time Zut."

"Special hors d'oeuvres for the night was a tempura squash blossoms. Tempura is supposed to be a light batter, but this was heavy, doughy, and greasy.
Salmon (local, from 50 miles up the coast, we were told), had a decidedly funky flavor to it. It was served with red bell peppers, which overwhelmed the flavor of the fish, which in this case was okay due to the peculiar flavor of the salmon. And we've had Scottish Salmon, Fresh Alaska king salmon in Alaska, fresh copper river salmon, smoked salmon from the Sacramento river, you name it, we've eaten salmon, and this salmon was not good.
Best things were the salads. They were exceptional - including the both the beet and caesar. Nice simple wine list."

"Been here a few times and once again had a fantastic meal. Can't say much for the host. Don't know his name but he needs to get a personality. Didn't hurt our meal though. Will go back again amd again. I do miss the pork riblet app that they took off the menu!. Take a friend or a date or just stop by for a great meal. If it's cold, and you want to sit outside , they have heaters outside."

"I have always enjoyed Zut but a birthday dinner celebration on Sunday, April 28th, was very disappointing--looking forward to a special treat of Halibut and it arrived for me and friend, both dry and overcooked. The Restaurant was so understaffed that our very competent waitress was having to run around like crazy so the idea of waiting for the entrée to be redone was not an option.

"I always look forward to going to Zut, and they have never let me down. Everything on the menu I have tried is terrific, but the brussel sprouts are a knockout! "Love this place. Can only eat here once in a while because it is very expensive. I eat food here I wouldn't normally eat (spare ribs, brussel sprouts) because I know it will taste amazing. The flavors are bold. Had to ask for bread. Not sure if I liked that or not. I think we should be served bread since the meals are so expensive but I did eat more of my meal because I didn't fill up on bread.
My favorite item is the Point Reyes Blue Pizza. Yum."

"Zut is great for flavorful food. Many of us older folk can't hear well in these noisy trendy places, but the waitress got us a table in the quietest area. Quiet being relative. I enjoy relaxing with a friend after some fun Fourth Street shopping."

"The food was out-of-this-world! Especially the fried brussels sprouts and mushroom risotto. Everything was fairly priced and the atmosphere was spectacular. The only thing that wasn't perfect was the service, which was a bit slow. But it was a busy Friday night and it was actually ok because we didn't feel rushed. I can't wait to go back and try everything else on the menu!"

"Delicious - my vegetarian friend LOVED the beet salad and the red quinoa dish. My grilled aparagus was seasoned the best I've ever had and the fish served with spinach was delicious. Only negative comment was that the side serving of roast potato was too dry. But overall a DELICIOUS meal, good wine, and a great find to be on 4th St. in Berkely!"

"We had dinner at Zut on a busy Saturday evening. This may explain why the service had some shortcomings such as having to chase down someone to bring us knives and forks after the first course, failing to check on our water and bread refill needs and a long wait for our bill. Fotunately the food was quite good. But the real downfall was the unacceptable high noise. A lot worse than your term "energetic". Conversation was really tough. As a result we won't be back."

"We really like Zut and would heartily recommend it. I'm a tough grader so 5 stars is hard to come by ;-) I'm not a fan of small children in restaurants, at least not in the ones where you can drop $100 for 2 people. Next time I'll go later in the evening - after 8pm - as the kids seem to have been gone by then."

"Love the brussel sprouts at Zut! I order them every time. The beet salad is also terrific, fresh mint adds a nice contrast.
I ordered the salade nicoise with seared ahi for the first time - the salad greens weren't as nice as the rest of the composition, but overall my experience was still praiseworthy. The service is consistently attentive. Nice atmosphere here- rooms are abuzz with conversation and exude contentment from the moment you walk in. Highly recommended!"
