Ajanta Restaurant
Ajanta features regional dishes from all over India, offered through a menu that changes every month. We feature organic chicken and vegetables. Where possible, we use local and sustainable products. All seafood is sustainable, obtained from Montery Fish Market. All meats are hormones and antibiotics free.
Ajanta has been voted best Indian restaurant in the entire San Francisco Bay Area by Zagat Guide in 2009, 2010, 2011 and also in 2012. We were also voted best Indian in San Francisco Chronicle/ SFGate Bay List in 2009, 2010 and 2011. In addition, We have received top reviews in several publications including East Bay Express, Diablo Magazine, and Contra Costa Times. We are also included in Michelin Guide.
Dinners are served in an elegant dining hall, featuring art inspired from the famous Ajanta caves in India.

"The food was very tasty. Majority of the ingredients are organic. My husband ordered lamb korma, I had chicken tikka masala. Both dishes were distinctive in flavor, very well balanced - not too salty. Naan was delicious, as well as cardamom rice. The service was excellent. We will definitely come back."

"We always enjoy eating at Ajanta where the food is imaginative and and delicious. This time we had their prix fixe dinner which had multiple small dishes and is a great way to sample things. We came away with full stomachs and a real feeling of well being.

"We like Indian food; hadn't been here for a few years due to location. On this return visit we remembered one other reason why--the service here is very poor, indifferent, lots of waiting and being ignored. Almost a joke, really. The standard dishes were ok but way oversalted. We tried a couple of new things, asparagus and another vegetable starter which were affirmatively bad, asparagus undercooked and the other vegetables had a strange spice flavor. We're done with this place permanently."

"This was our second visit to this restaurant, but we love the food so much that we recently ordered take out to share with other family in our area (we are about 1 hour's drive from there) and they licked the platter clean and were thrilled to know that they could enjoy delicious vegetarian and seafood Indian food when they are in the area! We also love the freshness of the food and lack of heaviness that some Indian dishes could have."

"We had not been to Ajanta before but are experienced Indian food diners. The pickle was homemade. The breads were fresh and hot. The service was very attentive. When my wife ordered the hot, it was really hot and the waiter asked if she would like some yoghurt and they brought it complimentary. The wines were very well priced and a decent selection, not wild variety but that is not really necessary in an Indian food restaurant. It was not elegant but it was very good. The service was excellent although without much personality. We would go back."

"We used to live in Berkeley more than 10 yeaqrs ago and frequently dined at Ajanta at that time. We returned this past Saturday night to find Ajanta even better than before. Lachu Moorjani, the owner/chef has added many new dishes, as well asw a chef's tasting menu, which we ordered. Food was excellent, taste was outstanding.
Lachu spent time at our table, talking about Ajanta's evolution.
I can't wait to return."

"The flavors are incredibly fresh and authentic. The presentation was like nothing I've experienced at an Indian restaurant and they had a variety of dishes that I've never seen at an Indian restaurant, i.e., Tandoori portabella mushrooms... YUM! If may seem a little pricey at first but compared to most places where you have to order the rice and naan separately, this place extremely reasonable. Your meal comes with rice, naan, and either saag or chickpeas so you never have to decide between delicious meat and veggies. As an added extra, the food is cooked to your level of spiciness.
I will most definitely be returning."

"I've always loved Ajanta and was excited to read about their chef's tasting menu... but not so excited once I ordered it. The appetizers were nice and the lamb chops were divine, but the rest was "filler" that I would not order again. Service her varies widely -- this time everyone seemed more disinterested than usual One server wore a long scarf that trailed across tables (and our wine glass) as she walked endlessly around the room; not too appealing!"

"On our recent visit to Ajanta we chose the vegetarian tasting menu. For one price we received 3 starters, 4 main courses, relishes, naan, rice and a choice of two desserts from a long list of sweet choices. The serving sizes were smaller than regular entree sizes, but was still more than enough for the two of us. Each dish was filled with fragrant and complimentary Indian spices. We chose moderately spicy seasoning from an offered range of mild to extreme. The wait staff worked as an interchangeable team making sure our food was presented and cleared in a timely fashion. Overall a great Indian dining experience."

"Excellent Indian food, but reminded me why I have been reluctant to come back (even though this is the best Indian food in the area). It would have been nice if the waiter hadn't left before us, so that when we were ready for dessert and chai, we would not have been told rudely that they were closing. Our waiter knew we wanted dessert and tea, but was nowhere to be found. This is not the first time we've had negative service experiences here. Too bad."

"We've dined at Ajanta for years, but it has degraded significantly. While the food is still pretty good, although not as good as in the past, the service is terrible. 25 minutes before anyone took our order, and another 30 minutes before we were served. Additionally, only one person was taking orders, and did not take orders in the order that customers were seated. We'll never go back."

"We managed to get a table for 7 the day before an important group dinner, and the staff at Ajanta worked with us to accommodate 8 instead of the 7 we booked. We shared several family-style dishes and finished with delicious kheer. The staff were always ready to fill our glasses and entertain our requests for more food. It was a great dining experience!"

We have been coming here for years and are never disappointed. Each month, the menus rotates in several new dishes from various parts of India while continuing to feature old standards.
