"We were traveling on a golfing weekend with friends and had to stop at L-May in Dubuque. We make it our must stop place whenever we are in the Dubuque area. Never had anything but a wonderful meal and experrience at L-May. I just wish it were closer to where we live ( Des Moines) so we could go more often.
It was the first time at L-May for our friends who were with us and they loved it too!"

"We celebrated Mother's Day at L May and, as usual, the food was wonderful. We have just one suggestion. Make your kids menu more kid friendly. A plain cheeseburger. Plain mac & cheese, etc. would be welcome for little ones."

"While the food was varied, tasting and well prepared, carrying on a conversatin was rather dificult. Our waiter was attentive without being intrusive. This could easily be a five-start restaurant if there was a way to dial back the noice level."

"We had a non-meat eater in our group, and there were lots of seafood options as well as salads for those who don't eat any meat. The crab cakes and bruschetta appetizers were delicious, as was my monkfish. I also tried the filet, which was prepared perfectly and was only $26 for an 8 oz., including a side and salad. Can't beat the prices for this level of dining!"

"I ate at L. May for the first time on Saturday with a group of friends for dinner. We had a great experience! Lexie, our server, was awesome, providing food and wine recommendations and joking around with us and sharing stories about the restaurant. The food was outstanding, the osso buco was a favorite. We also had a vegetarian in the group with high standards and polenta provencal was also excellent.
I look forward to returning to try the bacon crab mac-and-cheese pizza!"

"L May has been my favorite local treasure for years. I pride myself on ordering the osso bucco each and every time; and I am never disappointed. But, this week, I tried something new - polenta cakes with tomato vegetable sauce. It was just as delicious and even more appropriate for spring time...just loved it. Just goes to show that L May's menu is full of delicious choices so go ahead try something new!"

"The food was FANTASTIC server Chris was EXCELLENT!
The tables could have been placed better, it felt a bit cramped.

"My wife and I were visiting Dubuque and read about L. May and saw that it was highly rated. We are suckers for local food spots! The people at L. May were very warm and welcoming. We had a very good waitress, and the food was very good. We split the pork, and the Dubuquer Pizza. Our only complaint was that while the pork was very tender it lacked a good supporting flavor. Would go again!"

"My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our appetizers--a chili-lime shrimp dish and Harissa lamb and eggplant! We'd eaten the crispy, sweet-and-salty "Figgy Pig" pizza on previous visit, and it was also delicious, as expected. My husband had the lasagna, but it didn't have layers...just a noodle on top & bottom w/ tons of meat and not much sauce or cheese. I had the pot pie which had great flavor, but sauce was a tad soupy and celery was too crispy for my taste. We still like LMay, just first time not fully satisfied with the food. Great service!"

"It was a superb dining experience. The white bean hummus, with a side of pickled vegetable and olive relish and plenty of pita wedges, was a great starter and enough for our table of four. The blueberry pomegranate martini was a really hit. We ordered the salmon with couscous, the lobster stuffed orange roughy, and the cioppino. It was all delicious and beautifully presented. The house salad and the warm bread with red pepper butter, wonderful. When the desserts appeared table side we couldn't resist the chocolate mousse and the goat cheese gelato, which was a unique taste treat, and our favorite of the two choices. We were seated promptly at our reservation time. The service was friendly, very attentive, and our food was well paced."

"We have yet to be disappointed at L.May. The food is consistently wonderful, the service is always exceptional, and the attitude of every L.May employee SHOUTS "We're glad to have you here"! There are other good restaurants in and near Dubuque, but quite frankly they need to raise their standards to those of L.May if they ever want to capture any of my dining dollars!"

"We followed the advice of another reviewer: "Have the special, whatever it is!" and were very happy with our choice.Our reservation was for 8 PM and our server Kathy made a point to reserve the last two specials (grouper with artichoke & caper sauce, I believe.)
This meal was all about friends getting together, so 6 days later my memory of the details about the food are fuzzy, but I know we enjoyed everything, especially the ahi tuna appetizer. The only reason I wouldn't check "Fit for Foodies" above is that the menu didn't seem especially adventurous, but exactly what you'd expect to go over well in the Heartland. (That's not a complaint, but an observation.)"

"Had to wait for our table on a Friday night. Dining room was tight, but not overly noisy. The crostini appetizer was fair, but the main courses (grilled salmon and a tomato broth fish soup) were very nice. The salted chocolate dessert, suggested by the neighboring table, was a good end to the meal."
