In 1984, Rosa Mexicano set a new standard for Mexican cuisine when it first opened on the upper east side. Playing a leading role in defining what was then a "new" cuisine to American diners, Rosa Mexicano delivers authentic Mexican cooking in an accessible, stylishly festive atmosphere. Rosa Mexicano's menu features a range of award-winning signature dishes, including our Guacamole en Molcajete, in a traditional lava rock mortar. Described by Time Out New York as "green ecstasy in a stone bowl," it is prepared tableside and served with house made chips, warm corn tortillas and condiment salsas. Rosa Mexicano is also known for the Frozen Pomegranate Margarita, as well as the stylish and festive ambience that includes the 15 foot, illuminated water wall.

"Good tequila flights with good food and good service. Hard to ask for anything else if tasting various tequilas is your goal.
PS. The main receptionist lady, the one that has her hands on the computer screen by the door is always very accomodating, pleasant and does a great job at what must be a very hard job!"

"I had a group of six for a birthday dinner. We were given a table kind of tucked around the side of the front door -- which sounds like a bad thing, but because of the layout of the restaurant felt almost like we had a private room, which was lovely. The food was excellent -- I am from an area of the US which has loads of excellent Mexican cuisine and I can say that the guacamole is the real deal! A friend and I both had the green cream sauce on our enchiladas and we both thought it was maybe a tad too sweet but still very tasty. We also had a couple of pitchers of sangria -- the rosa mexicano was excellent (and far better than Dos Caminos) the sparkling wine sangria was much drier and less sweet but still enjoyable."

"What more can be said about the delectable dishes at Rosa Mexicano? The freshly made guacamole (made to order) is NEVER passe. Neither the menu specials nor the menu options are ever boring, poor choices. The portions are sizeable, though, so if you fill up on the guacamole and chips, you may need to share your entree (or take it home). The staff are gracious and attentive, and they always offer advice on menu selections when you're stumped about what to choose. Reservations are always best, especially during evenings and weekends. Buen provecho!"

"I had family in from out of town and wanted to find a place that would be special enough but also accommodate a couple of tweens. We had a reservation but arrived early at the restaurant and we were given a table right away. The food was excellent, the service was wonderful and friendly. "Excellent food, albiet a bit overpriced. Surprised to arrive at 9:30 for a 9:45 reservation to be told that the kitchen was closing shortly and we'd need to order quickly. If this was the case, why would reservations be accepted for 9:45 (nevermind the fact that we were early anyway!)? Despite this "warning," our waiter was particularly slow to return to our table to take our order. Aside from that frustration, it was an enjoyable dining experience."

"The food was great, but the service was horrible. The waiter pretty much neglected us unless we got his attention, and the empty appetizer plates were not removed until after we were halfway done with out entrees. My boyfriend and I went for my birthday dinner and they neglected to put a candle in my dessert despite his request. He had called ahead as well as confirmed when we arrived at the restaurant."

"What a disappointment. After wanting to visit this restaurant for some time, I met a friend for dinner. We wanted a vegetarian meal, but very little choice- so we both ended up ordering the vegetable enchiladas- spinach and mushroom covered with tomato sauce and some goat cheese I think. I asked for real black beans instead of refried, and was informed they do not serve them!! This to me is a serious infraction and proof this is not a really authentic mexican restaurant. the food was "ok"...bland to me. The waiter was pushy- we wanted to visit and sit and catch up, and he was annoying and rushed us and I will not return."

"Great place out in the quiter edge of Union square. Large venue with service of a small cosy restuarant - quick and helpful. I was a tourist and Opentable helped me a lot to reserve for Valentines for a party of 6 and i was amazed it actually went to plan - no breakdowns in the chain of reservation. It made the night - latin dance pair dancing beside tables throughout the restuarant and fresh guacamole made in front of you with great choice from the menu. Great interior decor with large illuminated central flowing waterwall feature."

"This was a pretty pricey dinner but the food was AMAZING! Portions are HUGE. My boyfriend and I were able to finish the entire guacamole starter (the best! by the way) but when it came time for our entrees we were a little too full. The drinks were great. "Coming from Chicago, home of some of the best Mexican food in the country, I had limited hopes for Rosa Mexicano despite it being highly recommended. The food was good but nothing special. I had the fish and meat stew which was marked as very spicy. It had little kick to it at all. My partner had the salmon in mole and he too commented that it was good but nothing special. Table-made guacamole was good but, again, not memorable. I wouldn't recommend this place for folks looking for high-end or unique mexican food. The other problem was that the restaurant was full of bachelorette or birthday parties - groups of 15-20 - and I usually avoid places that cultivate that crowd. Just so-so."

"i loved the decor of the place-various shades of purple, brown and pink under muted lighting. i felt as if i had stepped into a palace. our waitstaff was friendly, prompt and efficient. it is a lovely restaurant.

however, the food is unexciting. none of the items engaged my palate. the food was a thorough disappointment. there has to be more to Mexican cuisine than chicken and beef and beans.

i did not try the bar, but it looked lovely with high back bar-chairs and a large offering of wines, spirits and liquor. i would go back to check out the bar, but not the restaurant."

"The fresh Guacamole was delicious. So awesome it was made right in front of your eyes. Although my personal meal wasn't the best, the ambiance, decor and company made up for it. I will say that the meals came out super fast and my reservation was honored without delay. The waiting area was gorgeous and water feature next to my booth. I loved the way everything looked. I had lump crab and the flavors were just different, not bad, but not to my palette."

"I've been going to Rosa Mexicano for almost 25 years now. My parents used to take me and my brother to the original one (1st ave) frequently when we were kids (they were "foodies" way back then too). I've gone to all the NY Rosa's, and the DC one many times. My friends have celebrated many special occasions at each one. This last visit was my girlfriend's birthday dinner. I booked it through OT and used the "notes for maître d" to communicate the occasion to avoid the need to sneak the info at the restaurant to inform our waiter. We received nothing, not even a "Happy Birthday". Our waiter brought 1 desert that my gf ordered from the menu as part of a restaurant week special, but never even asked if I wanted desert. We told the host and..."

"This was my son and my first experience dining at Rosa Mexicano and we were both impressed with the quality of service as well as the dining experience overall. We both went for restaurant week as this is restaurant that we would normally not be able to afford. We were seated as as soon as we arrived at the restaurant even though we arrived earlier that our reservation time. The prefixe dinner menu choices were good and the meals we selected were excellent - we loved the salmon and the tableside guacamole. Service was phenomenal. The waiter provided my son with extra helpings of nachos and refried beans since he noticed that my son loved them."

"We were recommended this restaurant by a colleague, as we were visiting NYC for the first time on business. We booked as part of NYC Restaurant week, and were impressed when we walked into the building, its fun, vibrant with great decor and a buzzing vibe.

We had some cocktails in the bar, the margheritas were very very strong!! We were seated promptly in a booth, and the service was very friendly and efficient.

Food was great, classic Mexican fare and they make the guacomole at the table according to your taste.

Great fun evening, definitely recommended for a night out with friends!!!"

"Our server - I wish I could remember her name - I think it was Lee or something like that - was super friendly and helpful. The food was absolutely delicious - everything was fresh and cooked perfectly. The sangria was also delicious and a great bargain for the large pitcher (shared by 3 of us). "I was greeted promptly even though the restaurant was busy. This was my first visit to the restaurant and I was dining alone. I was given a decent table and had excellent service. I had the restaurant week menu featuring a delicious spicy chicken tortilla soup
moist salmon on a spectacular mole and finished with a chocolate dessert. Although the restaurant was quite busy the noise level was not overwhelming. Next time I go I'm taking a friend or two so we can try the fresh guacamole."

"I ate dinner during the January restaurant week and ordered off the restaurant week menu. It was fabulous food. The guacamole was excellent and the margaritas are great. "I've been to Rosa Mexicano numerous times. I have always enjoyed it thoroughly and keep waiting for the other shoe to drop....it never does. The made-at-your-table guacamole is outstanding, as are each entree I've tried. The servers are always at the ready...but not so in your face that you feel like asking them to sit down with you. This is becoming one of my favorite places to take NYC visitors to."

"I've been to Rosa Mexicana on the UWS and have had great meals in the past. I was really disappointed with my meal on Saturday night at the Union Square location. It just didn't taste that great and was uninspired. I had the veggie enchilada. I won't be going back anytime soon, and if I do, it'll be to the UWS location. The vibe is very different there, too. Dimmer lighting, feels more upscale than the Union Square locale."

"The food was excellent! You absolutely must have the guacamole. We had the steak tacos which were excellent! The steak was marinated to perfection and the ingredients were so fresh. "Guacamole was very good and the white wine sangria was a pleasant surprise. We were a party of four, who had had a late lunch but kept our dinner reservations at Rosa Mexicana i.e. weren't starving. We all had drinks but shared the small guacamole and two entrees, which didn't make our waiter too happy. The kitchen was gracious enough to plate our orders on separate plates but the waiter was hovering over us and hurrying us through our dinner, to make way for the next party, which didn't add to the dining experience."

"First time I didn't enjoy dinner at Rosa Mexicano. Went with a group after work, and although we'd asked for a quiet booth in the rear or on the side, we were seated in the center of the room, in the noisiest section. Our waiter was incredibly inattentive. I have to admit, it was quite busy, and they might not have had enough wait staff working. I had to get up and go look for our waiter twice. It was so incredibly noisy, that we had to raise our voices to have a conversation. There are too many hard surfaces and the sound just bounces off of all the walls.

I did not expect this situation on a Monday night with a 6:45pm reservation. Very disappointed."

"Great food in a fun environment. The guacamole freshly made and served at your table is a must. Brunch menu at weekends is full of delicious extras which compliment the extensive authentic mexican dishes. The margaritas slip down smoothly and easily."

"We've had dinner at the Lincoln Ctr location and really looked forward to a wonderful dinner celebration at the Union Square location. Unfortunately, we (party of 5) arrived for our 9:30 reservation and weren't seated until 10:15 in the back of the restaurant which was severely overcrowded. No excuse or apology given for the lateness. There was barely enough room for the waiter to make his way around the table (leaned over the table to fill the water glasses and serve food). Felt like we were infringing on the conversations of those around us. The tables were that close! The making of the table-side guacamole was done across the room due to the overcrowding (they might as well have made it in the kitchen)."

"We took some out of town family to Rosa Mexicano for Thanksgiving dinner. The hostess was very warm and welcoming and the waterfall wall at the entrance was breathtaking. We were seated timely and enjoyed the decor. They had a special holiday menu that offered an exquisite pumpkin soup that everyone at the table ordered and enjoyed immensely. They also had a turkey with mole sauce and corn bread and plantain stuffing, excellent. The rest of us ordered off of the regular menu, the short-ribs were to die for, but the portion was extremely large. All of the food was excellent. Our only complaint was portion size - there was just too much food! Of course, some people may not complain about that. We would certainly return to this spot."

"Truly a fantastic meal for Thanksgiving -- unexpectedly perfect Mexican-with-a-Turkey-twist. The only strikedown in ambiance is a repeated problem with this location: the ac is always on, and drafty. I cannot tell you how often we've been here & asked to have that fixed somehow, but it's just not possible. Bring a sweater if you're not seated in the back room.
